No, a better idea would be to scale back and focus on premium laptops and hybrids and the sliders, and buy Sharp's small display business...

The first ever Cortex A57 based CPU announced.. a Quad and Octa Core @2.0GHz and it's by AMD

But don't get too high.. it's not a mobile part.. it's a server part

Opteron A1100, 4 - 8 cores, 2GHz, 25W TDP ( for 8 cores ), DDR3 & DDR4 support for up to 128GB !!

probably not a rumour for this thread, but if DDR4 is true, then AMD beat Intel?

Posted by Xajel
^^^

After all it's based on A57 which we're waiting for mobile... having an announced SoC based on it means it becoming closer.. but as it's not a mobile targeted product.. it's not that close to WOW about

regarding AMD and DDR4, Anandtech said the controller support both DDR3 and DDR4 but the development platform comes with DDR3 support only... so it's only in paper nothing in real life - yet -.. a habit of AMD

Intel plans is already targeting this year starting for DDR4 but as with AMD, only for Server parts... desktop or laptop will get it later this year or next year...

intel will only bring it to high end and it won't ship until next year.

[OT]Sony buys Nintento chip factory to increase the CMOS sensor production.

^ [OT] Funny, not anywhere near as offtopic as most of the recent comments.

(My comment got somehow screwed up)

Where did you read that it was a Nintendo factory? just curious

http://tablet-news.com/2014/0[....]devices-including-two-tablets/

ony is apparently preparing new devices for their Mobile World Congress 2014 introduction in Barcelona and today 3 such products have hit the FCC. Apparently we’re dealing with a phone and two tablets.

So basically we may be preparing for an Xperia Z2, a follow-up to the Xperia Tablet Z and maybe a new phablet. We could see a new release of the Xperia Z Ultra model, maybe the WiFi model that has been floating on the interwebs, or maybe a totally new unit. The 3 devices mentioned here were tested together at the FCC, so apparently this should mean that their hardware is quite similar.

Also, the tablets’ model numbers are similar: TM-0040-BV and TM-0043-BV, so in the end it could be a single Xperia Tablet Z2 slate with 2 versions. Android is probably the OS of choice and I can’t help but wonder what happened to that Windows Phone device they were supposed to be making. Also, do they care about Windows 8 anymore?

Hmm probably all android, although would be nice to see some windows 8 tablets, but as I mentioned before, computex would make more sense for those, unless Sony has decided to not enter the sub 10 inch tablet market in the world of windows.

PY7TM-0040, PY7TM-0043
kind of device: tabletPC
firmware on the device 17.0.A.0.274
GPRS/EGPRS 850/900/1800/1900; UMTS HSPA FDDI/II/IV/V/VIII; LTE
FDD1/2/3/4/5/7/8; WLAN b/g/n/a/ac; BT 4.0; RFID; A-GPS

both look to be sporting LTE, I doubt these are 2 different models, I feel, probably just variants of each other.

Yep, they use the same BT hw/sw for instance.

Btw do we now anything about the D6603 except that one benchmark?
Will it even debut on MWC?
Or is it bogus?

Oh and slightly offtopic but huge wtf, Google sells Motorola to Lenovo for 2.9 billion. WTF

Good business all round if you ask me.

Lenovo see potential in the smartphone market in their home territory of China and want to step in to that gap.

Google want to cut an unnecessary arm and the money is good.

Good business.

I'm interested to know if there will be a Vaio Tap 11 equivalent with android and windows dual booting. I can't remember who released a massive touch screen monitor with built-in android at CES but it was awesome if a little big.

It was Lenovo ThinkVision 28 I think. 28" is huge obviously. I was thinking 11" with a stylishly detachable keyboard (like VAIO Tap 11 NOT ASUS Transformer style).

ASUS did release an AIO system with 18" touchscreen that has Android also along with the default Windows...

The hint here is that you can actually remove the screen and use it as a standalone 18" Tablet !!

But it's not dual boot, it's actually has a Tegra3 SoC for the Android part both systems runs in the same time and you can switch between them with a hardware button !

I wonder if Sony will be one of the companies to use this part.

Hold you horses, those news just mixed it up together, nothing more than that.

STM OIS-Hardware still 2-axis, while Nokia actually used advanced 3-axis since it first launch of Lumia 920.

The key of STM OIS offer is reduce whole size of package, to serve very thin trend phone.

Pre-ordered an Xperia Z1 Compact (with £50 cashback from Carphone Warehouse) and it should be arriving today!!!
So excited. First new phone in over 2 years! Finally can put my slowly dying Xperia Ray to rest....You've been good to me pal.

Anyway, I'll probably run through some stuff. Check how it feels and all. Not sure if I'll post pics for privacy reasons, but I'll give a brief hands-on.

I got mine 2 days ago and it has awesome battery life! Wich colour did you choose?

Feels great in the hand. Surprisingly heavy, but in a good way. Feels dense and sturdy.

Screen is perfection. SO much better quality-wise, than ones I've seen on standard Z1 dummy units. Absolutely beautiful, excellent contrast, excellent viewing angles, good pixel density. Destroys the decent screen in my Ray, not even a fair competition.

I really hope Sirius will have a screen at least on par, if not better, than the Compact!
man this screen is superb... in video but even more in reality

Posted by -XYZ
I must say, the Camera software, at least in indoor lighting/low-light situations is pretty poor.
The white-balance is way off. Something that looks orange-brown in reality, is made to look yellow-ish.

The iPhone 5 and 5s both produce much more natural looking colours compared with the Z1 Compact.

Haven't tried outdoor, bright-light photography yet, but given that I'm in the UK, where the weather is miserable, I doubt I'll get a chance for a while.

Hope Sony really sort this out with the 4.4 update, cause while Sony has infinitely superior camera hardware, they really are messing up with the software.

What is this Z1 Compact device people are talking about? What are the rumoured specs?? Oh, wait......

Seriously way off topic. Absouletly nothing to do with rumours. The phone has its own dedicated thread. Surely we can discuss it there.

No mods around to clean up?

Move over and back to fiction.

Now that we've got a compact z1, can we have a full-size version?

The compact seems to have a better screen and battery life.

Enter Sirius I suppose.

Guys I have a question!
Is the magnetic charging connector the same in Z1, Z1 Compact and Z Ultra? Not the cradle... Just the cable!
And will it be the same in Sirius?
Beacause I found a seller on Amazon that is selling the magnetic charging cable (Sony Official) alone at 11€ and I was planning in buying 1-2 of them... I think they could ne extremely useful for my future Phone...!

This could be great news for the sake of waterproofing!:)

About qi wireless charging, does that mean that a wireless stand will be needed to be purchased separately or will it be included in the box? what's the real benefit of wc if you still need a stand sitting on your desk that is connected to a wall cable? why not just use the charging dock or cable? wc should not be dependent on a charging cable... otherwise it's not really wireless. EDIT: i read about this tech a bit, another disadvantage of wc is that you can't even move the device while its charging which is kind of silly. i see no benefit to wc other then for people who are lazy to hook the device to the charging cable - but wc doesn't even help that because docking station would be the best solution - you can still move the device and watch content in a viewing angle. unfortunately this tech is pretty much a toy rather then bringing something beneficial to the user.

The router/AP that is broadcasting your wifi signals still needs to be connected through a wire. Is that not wireless?

Posted by amirprog
@MNX1024
by saying what you say you COMPLETELY missed the point of what i am saying. for wc to be useful it should not require a charging cable and attaching it to a stand/mat - otherwise there is no meaningful benefit to wireless charging. you are just paying for an expensive charging cable and stand. the whole point of wc is not needing the annoying charging cable and having the ability to use your device and move it while its charging to wherever you want in your house, just like you would surf the net on a laptop wherever you want in your house WIRELESSLY. unfortunately, the plus is slightly ease of use, but that's about it. the disadvantages mentioned above outweigh this tiny ease of use.

I am in two minds about the Qi charging.

It's more convenient than buying a new dock every time I buy a new phone. Also it means I can just pritt stick a charging pad to any universal car holder and it will charge in the car.

But..
It charges slower than a usb cable and the magnetic ports on the newest Xperias works just as well.

But then again..
I see a future where on every table in every coffee Starbucks there's a rectangle drawn that will charge your phone if you put it there. All Qi powered. Just waiting for iPhone to include Qi so the coffee-slurping, skinny-jeans-wearing, hipster-monkey, I'm-so-original-that-I'm-the-same-as-everyone-else crowd think it's cool enough to do.

Posted by amirprog
@Ricky D
you made a point about future benefits, that's where the real benefit WILL come. from what i read, there is still not a standard wc regularity because Qi and powermat are fighting for fame and money. seems like betamax and vhs, etc. until then, i'll hold on to a regular charger or docking station. i may use wc only if sony pack one with the smartphone, but that would probably only happen in preorders or special deals. EDIT: one benefit to current wc is that you can use any kind of case - even one that doesn't have magnetic charger hole, but still, the ability to move your phone while its charging is a stronger advantage, for me anyway. wc is more like "can't hurt, might help", not more.

And then Apple creates/uses a different Wireless Charging Technology (that not Qi) and fanboys come all over us saying that they revolutionized that and bla bla bla...

Will be the same thing once they add NFC. At least it will make it more widely available... (in terms of more companies using that in their devices)

You mean they'll say they invented it.

With NFC they'll delay it as long as possible then say 'it wasn't necessary/useful until now'.. because a finger print lock screen (that got hacked with days) is more useful?

Simple sony needs a viable tablet to compete against the Ipad and the rest of the tablets out there. Pricing it out of the territory of the ipad is also suicide. Windows 8, wacom pen and 8 inch, is perfect.

Given this is Sony, I would hope they'd toss in waterproofing, a great camera and an IR blaster.

I do hope those leaks about the new flagship are accurate for the speakers being forward facing as that's a feature I've long wanted on a Sony phone and I hope they continue with it on future devices from phones to tablets.

For a tablet, Android would be better than Windows 8 IMO. What they need is effective marketing.

except the applications on android currently blow, iOS apps are way ahead in usefulness vs android apps. If you had a regular intel baytrail running full windows, you could do a lot more, and like most 8 inch tablets, it would come with full office suite.

I'm not sure people want Windows at this point. I know for a fact that I would not purchase anything with Windows on it (and won't until my desktop dies and I have to), especially if I'm in the market for a tablet, which already means I'm not that interested in productivity. I'm not against making tablets more productive, but let's face it: if you want to do real work, you move to a laptop or desktop. It doesn't matter that the tablet runs Windows.

+1
same thoughts here
To be fully operative I need
1) Keyboard
2) Mouse
And oh yes, I know that I can link a tablet with a mouse and a keyboard... but then where's the point of having a tablet, which should be useful for his touchscreen operation?? and his dimension?
At that point I would just buy a laptop, an Ultrabook or whatsoever (they even have touchscreen as of now...)

..so we want a device that dual-boots Windows and android with detachable keyboard, 11" and 13" options, all in Sony style (waterproof, omnibalance with the Xperia power buttons would be great).

Covers the bases of the office and at home. Why should I buy a tablet to play games on in bed AND a laptop for work on the road? Next step (5-10 years from now), the above device but powerful enough to negate the need for my powerful desktop.

Any info on thickness? Tablet Z is 6.9 mm. Z Ultra is 6.5 mm... I guess it will be around Z Ultra. Am I right?

iPad Air had the title of the lightest (but not thinnest) tablet in the 10 inch category, but won't for long anymore...

My Tablet Z will feel quite jealous...

EDIT: Regarding the Windows vs Android thing, my opinion is that a tablet can't and probably will never be able to replace a laptop. Tablet, IMO, isn't meant to replace a notebook, or Ultrabook or whatever, they are complementary devices. Even if you have a Windows tablet, you would still need another device, IMO...

That's why the perfect combo is a Smartphone (4-5 inches), a Tablet (7-10 inches) and a notebook (15-17 inches) and/or desktop...

Whatever it is, I hope the next tablet has the aluminium edge, like the Z ultra, Z1, and Compact.
The Tab Z has a little flex in it, and the aluminium would help reduce that and boost the structural rigidity a little bit more.
