SONY XPERIA Rumors 2014

Posted by Wintermute
Well said, Away, I agree totally. I would love to see, going forward, a high-end ~4.3," a flagship 5.0," a ~5.7" phablet, and then the Ultra line, at 6.4+". Not sure how feasible it would be from a manufacturing and logistics standpoint, but it'd be nice to have something for everyone.

Posted by Away
Not only would that be feasible, it would be desirable. It should be the objective of the Z line.

Anyway, Sony really have missed a golden opportunity with the Z Ultra, and they have a second chance as long as they make it's successor with at least the same screen size.

The Z Ultra should not have been marketed as a larger phone, slightly optimised for the larger screen and the best multimedia cellular device.

What it should have been marketed as was a revolutionary system - and for that it would need a waterproof mini-phone sidekick right out of the box.

Imagine: for the multimedia, do what it currently does. The best screen for watching videos, and even some productivity (viewing documents with a larger screen). But when you use it to actually make a call, a Bluetooth mini-phone with a week-long battery life you can easily use. Then, literally no one would stay away from it if they preferred larger screens, just not that large...

I know that idea was there to an extent with the SBH52, but the Z Ultra wasn't marketed with primarily that way to use it. You can swap Bluetooth mini-phone for Bluetooth headset etc, but you wouldn't be able to dial with that.

Very exciting news

I think I might be able to safely say that either this 2H flagship or the next Ultra shall be my next. This other phone that's been leaked seems like it'll be a good enough phone, but not nearly good enough to justify me jumping from my Z Ultra to it.

I wonder if we might see Sony one day fuse the qualities of their ruggedized phones into the flagship models. By that I mean make the phone tough enough to withstand drops and whatnot. If they're using some form of curved glass for this flagship then I have to imagine it'll be a tough material capable of withstanding some punishment.

OMG

But when is this Rrc 2 Xperia releases,is it on 2H,what about Sirius, which one to buy, heavily confused

Posted by amirprog
Curved phones are a fashion thing, not more. don't get me wrong, it's nice for people who likes to spend money on this fashion, but it lacks any real benefit in use and has high price tag and dumb down specs. it's kind of like these vertu phones. i don't think we will ever see curved flagships, unless they dumb down the specs which will never happen. i see them as broken faulty devices. it's kind of like watching a 3d movie - it looks cool at first, but then you don't want to watch a 3d movie any more, maybe only on special occasions. flexible foldable phones on the other hand will be a real advancement, like 4K content is as opposed to 3d.

Strongly disagree with this comment. Arc design actually is more functional than style-based thing. For a small handed people arc design actually give more freedom to use their device one-handed 'cause this design make the phone width smaller by some margin which is kindda usefull.
And it looks awesome!

Posted by -XYZ
I think they're talking more about the LG G Flex/Samsung Galaxy Curve styled stupid "bendy" phones, which serve literally no function aside from looking cool for about 5 minutes. Complete waste of time and space.

Arc design was cool, but I want them to try something new and unique. Maybe a new take on Omnibalance with a fully metallic body and better ergonomics.

In addition, I hope Sony try to make the next Compact Flagship with a 4.5-4.7 inch screen, but fit it into the Z1 compact form-factor. Minimum bezels like the Moto X.

Posted by Away
Arc design would be better ergonomics...

Posted by amirprog
@argiriano
it depends on the person. i understand what you are saying. i didn't mean the curved phones are completely useless, i'm saying that not many people, especially those who carry one device, which are most people, who wants high-end phone, will choose a curved phone over a flagship just for arguably better grip and fashion with almost the same price tag. if i want more comfortable phone to hold and operate with one hand then i would buy the z1 compact. but really, what i'm saying doesn't matter. today there are so many options. i'm just saying my liking and what kind of device i think is appealing to most people who wants high-end device.
@-XYZ
yes, i talked about phones like samsung curve and g flex. arc is just a curved body, not display. would be nice to see arc design again. i wonder if the z2 will have arc like design. he was not clear on that.

I PM'd zomg about the rumors of a Z1/Arc fusion being used in a future phone and here is his response, with his permission of course:

Not heard of any Arc design devices from Sony. Sounds like bullshit.

IPS has already been confirmed for 2014. All Sony phones in 2014, will use IPS technology. As for cameras, the software is maturing nicely there is a pack that will hopefully roll out with 4.4 for the Z1 that will further enhance image quality.

But yeah, not heard a single thing about going back to the Arc design. Omnibalance with smaller bezels is the 2014 design with edging like the Z1 compact.

I see. So do you feel this may be solely a new OS for the Vita itself, or could this be part of a new OS meant for phones and/or tablets?

Why you don't say that the merging of current omni balance from the front and the arc from the rear and make it dual sided screen phone?

Posted by vivftp
Now that is interesting, considering everyone is speculating that it's either the global announcement of the Vita Slim or the Vita TV. Of course it could be either one, and they'll reveal a redesigned OS for the devices at the same time.

I'm holding out hope that it's a mobile OS meant for phones and tablets of course.

Posted by smclion102
"Following the biggest launch in PlayStation history, join us for an introduction to the slimmest."

Sony is gonna announce VITA TV not any OS.You can clearly understand by their invitation Its a hardware event.
Sure Sony must be working on PS OS but it wont come to public so soon so lets move on.

Posted by vivftp
While I agree it's unlikely they will reveal a Sony mobile OS on the 30th, the discussion of the existance of such an OS is certainly worth discussion if it is true. If there is any chance of it finding its way onto a phone or tablet then this could spell huge news for the future of Sonys mobile division.

If, however, it's simply an updated and enhanced OS meant for the Vita, then it'll still be noteworthy news, just not as exciting as the alternatives.

Well, E1 didn't have IPS. But I hope the L successor would have one.

a normal battery usage by the sirius... from iRimas
Seems GOOD

in other news:
My 5 years old iPhone 3GS died... i loved it so much, I bought it on day one here in Italya, it had 32 GB of space and I'm still convinced that at that time it was the most awesome phone you could have
It served me honorably till now. It always worked even if lately it was a bit sloppy

REST IN PEACE my beloved 3GS... You'll always have a place in my nerdy heart

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I bought a Moto G in the meantime... the most affordable yet full of quality phone at the moment, and my first Android Phone I choose to go with the affordable one beacause I'm obviously waiting for Sirius, Z2 or whatsoever the first phone that will amaze me as the 3GS did at its time... I'm waiting for the Moto g to arrive in a few days, I'm really curious to play with android.... (BTW is there anyone with the Moto G? could you PM me with some impressions?)

looks like white balance is a lot better. It looks the cybershot team really just trying to get the hardware out there asap and slowly improve the software post release. Because anything that comes down to software can be improve over time but hardware is set in stone.

hardware could have issue as well. otherwise, the same improvement can happen with Z1, but they haven't done it. unless it's for some other business reasons

BTW, the original Sirius rumour mentioned 32GB onboard, but the prototype has 16GB...

Isn't because of being a prototype ? or Sirius will have 32GB ?

I'll be very disappointed if it has 16GB... It's not about ( it has a microSD ) but it's about Android 4.1+ doesn't allow move to microSD for apps.. and some manufacturers decided to enable this feature because of low internal memory... in any way.. most apps still doesn't cache in the external microSD and still use the internal for this purpose like Google Music ( will cache the offline music in the internal ).. and all these rumour about offline support for Youtube also...

Basically, Android is moving toward limiting the use of external storage... and high-end phones needs to have larger internal storage to separate them from the rest...

I'm not saying most peoples want 32GB, but there's a large base that prefer 32GB over 16GB. and sony should address this matter...

+1
it's time to make 32GB the new 16GB

Posted by Away
^Samsung will manage to do that first I think. I mean, with their bloatware only increasing, they'll make a 64gb ROM and leave 16gb user accessible...

I was waiting for Z1 Compact, but I am short of money, so I bought Moto G, too. Waiting for it to be delivered this week. I am so eager to come back to Android from WP! Sorry for OT.

The comparison pictures look very promising!
Definitely some enhanced software.

The only question is whether the sensor itself is any different or not. Maybe a newer batch.

Nonetheless I like it

Moody's cuts Sony's credit rating to junk

The ratings agency said that while Sony had taken steps to cut costs and improve profitability, the benefits of those steps were emerging “slowly” and its key segments “seem unlikely to soon regain the robust profit levels seen historically”.

More Job Cuts

Sony has offered early retirement to workers at five factories across Japan – including one that makes cameras – as part of a move to cut costs.

@everyone

Does Xperia D6503 comes with s-master mx or s-master mobile mx or at least a good sound chip? If not im going with nw-f886

Posted by Detox
Nope. But Sirius will have stereo speakers and the S-Force engine, though it is unknown if that is hardware or software based.

@smclion102: Damn. First Fitch Ratings in 2012 and now Moody's... Who's not accounted for? Standard & Poor's. It has Sony on the second-lowest investment grade and apparantly has placed it under review for junk status. Soon...

Ouch! I remember they cut Nokia's credit rating down to junk around 2012.
This makes me wonder how Sony's holiday Q numbers are looking. No word on how the Xperia Z1, and Z Ultra did for them.

^Sony said the Z1 is doing amazing for them, not long now before the numbers are revealed.

Rough times are ahead, but unlike many companies which faded, like Blackberry and Nokia, Sony are fighting.
The PlayStation brand is as strong as ever and the Xperia Brand is going from strength to strength.
The Camera division is making waves as it always has been.

Unfortunately, its the other divisions that are dragging it down considerably. Sony needs to make its Pictures, TV and Laptop division profitable again, and fast, to stay afloat.

Sony's largest money bleeder is its TV division. It's high time for Sony to scale down on its TV division.

2013 was sh*t for Pictures compared to 2012, 2014 is looking better with RoboCop, 22 Jump Street and especially The Amazing Spider-Man 2. And god I hope one of the those other unknown movies would be a surprise hit. But I think they aren't really getting much from Pictures anyway.

They need a refresh to their laptops, something like what they are doing with the Xperias. I don't know what else they can do with their TVs.

Posted by vikeviki
Sony TV lacks smartness and new UI,check with samsung and others ,Sony doesnt support Hardisk over 1Tb due to FAT32 format on there TV...and moreover no new UI,boring interface,,they are good in screen quality(highend),missing the software side,I do own 3d TV,nothing useful in its Interface.......Sony lost it glories due to this and I feel this.

Posted by Gitaroo
coming from a phone forum, if the TV support miracast, it already got most of the ground covered for myself personally.

True
The only things I manage to find were some VAIO laptops at the DEA station and nothing else... and even those were really unobstrusive...! I like the fact that they do not use telefilms as promos... especially for braking bad... I think that seeing Jesse or Walt with an Xperia T or an Xperia S would have been so bad, out of place !
I'm watching the mentalist and, well, it's the reign of apple... there are Mac and iPhone everywhere... they even give an iphone to Patrick... what the hell? and the most annoying thing is when Patrick (but also other characters) unlock/lock their phones, and you can CLEARLY see that the sound of locking/unlocking was put there during registration to make it clear... IT'S OBSCENE....

BTW is the Blacklist good??

Posted by Tsepz_GP
I'm one of the few in the world who never watched Breaking Bad going to raid Kalahari and Amazon for deals on dvds for the whole series.

The Blacklist is great, James Spader is the perfect guy for the part. I'm 2 episodes in and I've set my set-top-box to record the entire season as I know I won't always be home to catch it.

I hope Sony take more advantage of these opportunities this year, so many scenes perfect for them to throw in their models. Does anyone remember how perfectly they got it in the movie Casino Royale? Every character had a SE phone, or Sony gadget that sort of "matched" the character or the scene.

Excuse me, Sirius news coming through. And I hope you got the pun.

Sony Xperia Sirius (Z2?) and a new Sony tablet appear at the FCC, US LTE in tow

The smartphone is the Sony PM-0740-BV and, according to a Japanese blog that’s usually very reliable, this is the rumored Xperia Sirius D6503 - which could be called Xperia Z2 when it hits the market. The FCC reveals that the PM-0740-BV features Wi-Fi b/g/n/a/ac, Bluetooth 4.0, and support for the following LTE bands: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 13, 17, 20. This means that the handset will be compatible with the 4G LTE networks of three major US carriers: Verizon (bands 4 and 13), AT&T (bands 2, 4 and 17), and T-Mobile (band 4).

As for the new tablet seen at the FCC, this is the TM-0043-BV, and comes with the same connectivity options as the PM-0740-BV. The Japanese blog notes that the tablet is codenamed Castor, and could be released in Japan in the second quarter of the year, via NTT docomo and KDDI.

Thanks for the info... I'll try some episodes
BTW... you MUST watch the Breakng Bad... It's my all time favourite series (with Lost probably)... I'm at the 3^ season and man it's FULL of drama, hard decisions, WTF moments, sad and laughable scenes... it's over the top but also grounded... really it's AWESOME

Also.... even in Skyfall there were tons of Sony gadget ! a TON!

How many smartphones does Sharp sell? I think Sony should sell PC division and buy Sharp's smartphone business to get a grip on Japan and get access to Sharp's technologies and drive down costs with bigger scale.
