SONY XPERIA Rumors 2014

@XperiaCute
that is very clever and stylish! never thought it would be possible! the LED hole is wider for a reason. the 3 holes at the bottom are for the microphone, hehe. next thing sony needs to make is second speaker grill at the botton bezel for 2 speakers - fuller sound.
EDIT: wait a minute, there IS a second hole at the bottom bezel, above the 3 holes. a second speaker or just the design? look at this pic:

the Z1 refresh WAS Z1s. why would sony is announce yet another Z1 refresh phone, let alone 2 high end devices that none of them is a new flagship?

Litoni is not wrong, The Z1s is not a refresh, it is exactly the same as the Z1, just with 32gb internal memory & Tmobile bands. It cannot be a refresh if it's only being produced for one carrier; it's a simple variant only for Tmobile USA.

What ugly silver sides and more ugly 3,5mm jack and tiny powerbutton...
Sony put more and more ugly Z clones to the market. Z & Z Ultra still Sonys best designs.

Sony still don't know how to put all good stuff in one handset to have 1 year long a flaggshipp like the competitors do instead 10 fuc***g half clones.

It's still strategy...

Remember how the Z looked in leaked photos?
Exactly.

Posted by alexander87
lovely silver sides and powerbutton

hopefully sony continues this design queue, as their worst designs were the Z and the Z Ultra

Posted by amirprog
@FMW300
i roll with you.
@king-james
agreed, but nobody really knows if this is the Z1 refresh or whatever it will be called. anyway, this design needs exposed usb port, 2 speakers cause of the waterproof design(it may have 2 though), dual LED, the side frames could use a stripe design like the Z1 has - more style cause they do look a bit too clean.
Z1 design and dimensions with the Z bezel to display ratio with the above improvements is a hit in terms of design.

What the hell are you talking?? All the models of iPhones, Galaxies, HTCs and Lumias look exactly the same. And what 10 clones? Your comment is really low quality.

Posted by king-james
@Unknown
Oh really? And Sony not? Sony Z > ZL > Z1 > Z1s = 4 models + some region untits in a year! Didn't list the lower Z's. Why not 1 device per year? Others can, Sony still not. Cause they are too slow to put better HW into it devices...

@amir
Z also has bezels, but it looks ofc better! Cause all sides are perfect, not like Z1.

@alexander
Go buy new glasses, till yet, only the new T2 Ultra can mess with Z & Z Ultra.

@Away
No, I don't agree. This is more then just a leak. We see it full from all sides. Official pics won't change my mind.

And to the mothafaker over me, I spoke for the others, stupid newbie.

I seriously suggest you calm down King-James. Such meaningless aggression serves only to make you look like a petulant little fool.

May I also point out that design is subjective. I honestly think the Z1 looks better than the Z. Why? Cause its got a metal frame, an exposed 3.5mm jack that isn't covered by an annoying flap, it has much better water/dustproofing, the rounder edges make it feel a whole lot better in the hand too.

Cause they are too slow to put better HW into it devices...

This is arguably the most foolish thing you've ever said. Aside from mediocre screens (till the Z1 compact), what about the hardware has been mediocre? The Snapdragon 800 was the most powerful SoC that was available for them to put in their phone. The 1/2.3 20.7MPx sensor was the biggest sensor ever put in an Android phone.

Many emotions going on here right now.
Cool down guys!

@Leaks:
It's obviously the Z1L

Posted by DACHA
From what I am hearing there is no Z2 just yet. Sirius will be Xperia One 2.

Posted by -XYZ
To be honest, Sony really need to sort their shit out with the naming. Its starting to get confusing for us fans. Imagine how confusing it would be for the average consumer.

That and Sony's weakpoint has always been software. Their camera hardware is amazing, but their camera software is pretty much a joke. If companies like Apple with no dedicated imaging division, can make better image processing software than Sony...then something is really wrong.

Sony need to fix this....

Posted by DexterMoser
^The difference is Apple isn't doing that much on their own, but they like and are able to licence everything (loads of money).
But it's pretty much a secret where Apple exactly buys their hard- and software, or at least they're trying to ensure this.

@king-james
Partly agree, i meant that the Z design needs metal sides and not plastic and more visible stripe (not fat frame) like in the Z1.

all in all, sony design is much better then rivals. can ONLY be compared to the htc one and iphone 5s.
i don't give a damn if they make 1 flagship a year or 3 as long as they make a complete flagship and not half baked (hit and miss low light shots and display comes to mind). well, they seem to listen in terms of display, let's see if they perfected the camera this time. sony xperia cameras needs to be the best of the best, especially in low light shots, they provide the sensor to all other manufacturers and their camera division sure got the talent.
@-XYZ
+1
though they do need to improve in low light shots - less noise, but yes, it's software.
@DACHA
you must be joking about the name... xperia one 2...

TBH, even their dedicated cameras have bad image processing, they are by far the most aggressive out there, NEX/Alpha users have been complaining about this for a long time (Cybershot users usually don't give a **** ) and they only improved recently for their latest models ( A7/A7r ). Hopefully, it will get better in the near future, since they sorted this issue in other models, all they have to do now is port it to Xperia. And RAW imaging in Android could be another way to solve it, as it can allow any third party to implement different processing and have new camera apps that make better use of the sensor (even without post processing on the computer). This feature will soon come to Android.

Who knows how to do it? After this he might do an Antutu benchmark and reveal the innards! Come on guys, we only get few chances of leaks now that Sony's stricter than ever!

IMO this is the Xperia Z1L that zomg mentioned last year. The ZL version of the z1

Posted by vivftp
zomg is saying these latest pics are not the 2014 flagship:

The first set of pictures are not the Z2/2014 flagship. Afaik it is the Z1 for VZW. MSM8974AB, 2GB, 32GB.

Not sure about the purple back, could be from Canopus, which also isn't the Z2.

If the 5.2 inch display can somehow be misconstrued for a 4.5 inch one, then maybe....Unfortunately we live in the real world, so 5.2 inch =/= 4.5 inch.

Here, I have mapped out the possible marketing plan of Sony Mobile:

H1: January -June
H2: June- December

2013 June: Xperia Z Ultra
2013 September: Xperia Z1

2014 January: Xperia Z1 Compact
2014 February: Xperia Z1 Refresh
2014 June: Xperia Z2 Ultra
2014 September Xperia Z2

2015 January: Xperia Z2 Compact
2015 February: Xperia Z2 Refresh and so on…

Explanation: it makes more sense like this since Sony is doing a 6 months time frame between the main Z# and the Z# refresh. The time frame around June is probably where S5 will be announced, therefore, in order to keep the hype going Sony will be announcing the Xperia Z2 Ultra. September will be the announcement of Xperia Z2, 6 months after the Xperia Z1 Refresh. In the following January, Sony will announce the Compact version and in February, 6 months after the Xperia Z2, Sony announces Xperia Z2 Refresh to keep the sales up. In short, Compact and Refresh version of Z# is set in the First Half of the year, where as, the new Z# and Z# ultra is set in the Second Half of the year, going directly against the S# and the iPhone #.

Another way to think of it is that Qualcomm chips. Think of it and keep in mind although the chips were announced few months beforehand, but it wasn’t launched in the phones till later:

S4 -second half of the previous year
S4 Pro - first half of the year

S800 - second half of the previous year
S805 - first half of the year

SXXX -second half of the previous year

Explanation: with this scheme, we can clearly conclude that Sony wants to announce its flagship phone in the second half of each year, this will allow them to get the latest chip. Early, randomuser or someone also mentioned that Sony will no longer announce its flagship devices in the beginning of the year and also ditching the double flagship strategy because it was confusing consumers. No doubt, Samsung and Apple are doing a once a year flagship and still remaining the top. Sony is working hard to fight and differentiate itself from them with its water proof phones. If you check the sales and reports, Sony is actually moving up. Again, this strategy may or may not change in the near future, pretty damn sure Samsung and Apple are feeling the heat from Sony; the dark knight rises!

whatever device this is thats being pictured may have two front facing speakers the led earpiece could be both (speaker earpiece) under the top grill, but equally there is another slot/grill b.w the lower part of the bottom bezel and the frame.

and as far as BOSS sometimes it requires some outside the box thinking: http://youtu.be/VxSs1kGZQqc im confident it can be done, more confident that it can be done for 3 axis in a 'normal' sized handicam.. but thats too far O/T. still it would require quite a bit of research to apply the lessons learned from a technology like this into a functional BOSS system, and the question remains, would you pay a premium for it. i think the market has answered that question already.

or: http://www.st.com/web/en/press/p3507
http://www.google.com/patents/US20130077945

im postive sony has a plethora of patents for this already. they are withholding SS, its plain to see, for whatever reason.. maybe its for the coup d'etat with BOSS later on.. (doubtful) still it would be nice to see them taking steps as its such a large marketing point for them and their consumer+ camera lines

@litoni
Agreed. we came to this conclusion earlier though.
another indication for that is the number change. they continued the naming from Z to Z1, and NOT from Z to Z2 for a reason, indicating a number change = a new flagship will be announce only around the same time next year = every IFA. they would never change the number every half a year - it would be completely stupid in terms of marketing and very confusing to consumers. we can all agree on this.

According to the XDA forum, it houses MSM8974AB chipset.

And as well as the pics show G lens and the same X/X.X for sensor size and XX.X MP. Could it be changed?

Posted by randomuser
DoomLord on XDA:

well it seems the D6503 will be called sirius & will be having firmware version 17.x.x.x.x

it has MSM8974AB chipset

board name for sony msm8974ab devices is shinano & device name is sirius for Sony Xperia D6503

So the above pics are Sirius.

Whatever the F%$k the model is I need a better Sony ,nearly I wasted 4 months for xperia Z1 and got reimbursed after long hurdles ...This time seriously no Display panel lottery,but the point is if they dont release early they mightend up in losing there sales with other competitors S5 and IP6 ...however why there would be refresh of z1,it should have something unique in different for 2014 and people cant wait till IFA for Z2.

You want better screen? Go for those phones in which their screen size just came announced new , example 5.2inches , 6 . I believe these will be newer screen technologies just like the Z ultra, which it's screen was newly announced too.

Posted by karim128
^
That's not true, just because a manufacturer announced a 5.2 inch screen, doesn't mean it won't produce one which is a little bit bigger/smaller with the same quality if one major manufacturer ordered one. Take the HTC One for example. There were no announcement from any manufacturer about a 4.7 inch screen, yet it has one of the best screens out there (brightness, contrast and color reproduction).
Besides, color reproduction depend on the color calibration from the device manufacturer, not the screen manufacturer, so even if two devices from two different phone manufacturers have the same screen, there will be a difference in quality.

Edit:And manufacturers can always customize the screen, just like Sony added a Quantum Dot filter on its screens(Triluminos).

in terms of selling, 2012 was a successful year after 5 years of losses. 2013 looks to be more successful then 2012 for sony. so they are going back up in small steps it seems. reason for a new flagship in 2H i think is mainly because qualcomm offer their newest highend snapdragon then. but it's also perception. Z1 refresh can be aslo called a new flagship.

I just wonder why Qualcomm delayed SD805 until nearly 2H 2014 , although it isn't really a big step and doesn't vary from couple of SD800 variant such as MSM8974AC ( 2.5GHz Quad-Core Krait 400 , 578MHz Adreno 330 ... )

I thought at first Qualcomm is about to announce its 64-bit processors at CES , unfortunately that didn't happen for sure they might announce later on this year but the availability would be until Q2 2015 or so ..

just see who much Krait64 looks promising !

I feel Snapdragon 805 is litter upgrade , nothing revolutionary about it and Tegra & Exynos doing much better this year !

>
[ This Message was edited by: XperiaCute on 2014-01-19 12:00 ]

Posted by karim128
SD 805 is seriously underestimated. It has 40% more graphical power over SD800, and bring other features like tessalation. Tegra K1 should be faster by 40% , but then it would have a TDP of 5 Watt, which cannot fit in a phone. If it were to be used in a phone, it would have to be downlocked a lot, and then it woudn't be any faster than 805. Not to mentions UFS 2.0, which should enable much faster memories, and much faster boot times, and launch times for apps.

Posted by Away
The annoying thing is the tablet will only have a msm8974ab, or msm8974ac at best. That's barely faster than the msm8974, found in so many phones 6 months before we think it will release.

FYI, I read somewhere that TSMC has expect revenue from 20nm chip this year, only 10%!
which would be good explanation, why SD805 is quite such a delay.
to give more space Qualcomm to do better custom 64-bit chip.

I don't understand why everyone crazy about 64bit chipset, when Android OS is still not 64bit.

Well, because the dominate the market, they should care and I sensed it in their second comment about Apples A7...

All companies are accelerating now.. but the point is.. beside Apple all other companies relies on ARM Architecture... no changes.. and only 64bit ready one is the low end core ( A53 ), the higher-end core ( A57 ) is not expected to be ready till 2H14... Qualcomm is using their own design.. and they did introduce Krait before A15.. so we might be able to predict that Qualcomm might actually be ready with their Krait64 before A57... But who knows !!

Regarding TSMC 20nm
“We have two fabs, fab 12 and fab 14 that complete the core of the 20nm-SoC. As a matter of fact, we have started production. We are in the [high]-volume [20nm] production as we speak right now,” said C. C. Wei, co-chief executive officer and co-president of TSMC, during a conference call with investors and financial analysts.

and
At present TSMC is producing chips using 20nm fabrication process at select modules of fabs 12 and 14. Starting from May, the company will initiate 20nm production at the fab 15 modules 3 and 4.

The world’s largest contract maker of semiconductors predicts that wafers processed using 20nm process technologies will account for around 10% of its 2014 total wafer revenue. In Q4 the 20nm manufacturing technology is expected to account for 20% of TSMC revenue.

Source: http://www.xbitlabs.com/news/[....]g_20nm_Process_Technology.html

I guess 10-20% is good, this does not mean that 20nm isn't doing well like it should go for 100% revenue... the fact is only select types of manufacturing will require advanced process like SoC and GPU's... most other stuff that TSMC do as well doesn't require 20nm.. some still use 28, 32 or even 45 depending on the application as the 20nm is too new, too expensive and too complicated for their needs.. so they're going for some proved low cost solution for this... this is the case with every major contractor...
