Well guys! I was busy so I couldn't follow the CES:/ I'll follow Kaz speech by the way! I love that man :3
Also! I love the z1 compact and I really hope Sony to have great income with it! This phone is a great device, almost perfect...! It's not for me because I prefer 5" devices but I'm in the minority!:P
I personally founded interesting the Smartwear, I'd not buy the Smartwatch because They are too "flashy" it's something that everybody instanctly recognise being "digital"... This on the pther side is way more "subtle"! If they show me great use of this I'll surely buy one:)
And also this cradle! I like this idea! Great!
Have you seen the tv products from Sony?? Awesome:D their latest effort with the Bravia line are outstanding!!!

This year's CES was different than the last 2. In 2012, they announced the S and Ion (platform: Fuji). In 2013, they announced the Z and ZL (platform: Fusion3). This year, they also announced 2 new smartphones, but the platform wasn't new (Rhine), in fact it's known since the Z Ultra/Z1. Many people had absurd expectations, even though there were almost no rumours. Only the Z1 Compact was dead cert. The Z1S was rumoured to be either a Z1 refresh or a Z1 that is destined for the American market, I thought to myself the former for a long time... But to be honest, I wasn't disappointed at all after the press conference, in fact I'm very satisfied because of the progess Sony made.

If you think back, the S/Ion were released outdated, with a processor which was about a year old. Then came the T/TX/V, they were still behind by roughly 9 months, but already a bright spot. Next up, the Z/ZL with, among other things, the S4 Pro. Still behind about 3 to 6 months, but they had the choice: Either S4 Pro + headstart or S600 (which isn't that much of an upgrade) + no headstart. In my opinion, they made the right choice. And after them came the Z Ultra/Z1. They were the first devices to boast S800, that was unthinkable not long ago. Now CES 2014: The first true miniature flagship smartphone. And the rest will be history...

I also want to mention a specific guy, Kunimasa Suzuki. He was really entertaining and brought some actual humour to the show. It was a joy to see him on the stage and I'm looking forward to see him again. Actually, almost everyone in Sony's current team is very genuine, passionate and refreshing. In Sony we trust.

Z1 compact is actually a smart name.
Is there a possibility for new product announcement in the keynote? I was waiting for Z Ultra wi-fi.

Posted by ascariss
Doubt the keynote will bring any new products, will be shocked if it does.

you guys can watch it here

Leak teases new direction for TouchWiz on Samsung phones

Looks like Sammy is getting a UI overhaul, finally getting rid of their cartoony UI. Any plans by Sony for a facelift?

I was thinking here. Sony has a good partnership with the Brazillian carrier Claro. That partnership is so strong that they have an exclusive Xperia ZL (ZQ, as it is called here) in Red.

Considering that, I can imagine them making an exclusive Xperia Z1c in Red color... It would sell like hot cakes here...

Can anyone try to Photoshop that?

http://www.xperiablog.net/201[....]tor-tablet-on-the-horizon-too/

So how probable is 'Sirius' for MWC?
Does anyone else have some insights, information or educated guesses?

I'm definitely getting a waterproof phone for the summer. And the camera of the S4 Active sucks and my S4 sucks, kind of.
So the Z1 (or maybe the Z1c) is more or less bought if there's no successor at MWC.

This is how you do a keynote!

The new streaming game service, called PlayStation Now will provide instant access to games from previous versions of products including, the PS2 and PS3. Even non console owners wil be able to access it on TVs, phones, tablets, Andrew House, group president for Sony promised.

Sony goes all-in on cloud with game and TV streaming at CES

Andrew House, president and CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment, said the PS4 launch was the largest console launch ever with Sony selling 2.1 million consoles in the first two weeks. That figure grew to 4.2 million units as of Dec. 28, he boasted at Sony's keynote event.

It's miles better, IMHO, still better than LG but it's not the style I like! also it's clearly ripped off from iOs7... everybody ripoff everybody
Sony and HTC are the way to go for me

@Detox
If they manage to make the Playstation NOW service work right, well it will be an AWESOME service!!
Ps3, Ps2, Ps1, PSP games on every sony platform. TV and film on every Sony platform and more!
Xbox One sold 3 million console... Playstation 4.2 million! the E3 turnaroud on Xbox has it effects

Did anyone else pick up on the apparent fact that the Core device that's used in the wristband and whatnot is waterproof, yet the micro USB port is exposed? I couldn't find any sign of a port flap. If that's the case, then Sony might be using some sort of coating, and I believe it's the first time they've done that on a USB connector. I'm hoping this will be a sign of things to come for the future waterproof phones and let us get rid of another flap.

Posted by Xajel
@vivftp,

I guess the Core isn't waterproof, but the band is, so as long as the Core is inside or attached to the band then it will be water proof, sort of making the band working as port cover also...

Just my guess, nothing more...

BTW, will Sony incorporate all Core functions in it's next SW3 ? I hope so, along with BT4 LE and WiFi also ( WiFi only for controlling the camera in the mobile phone... and also that awesome smartstand I saw once )...

S has outdated processor out of the box but it was best optimized at a time (Qualcomm S3 with 17-20Mbps video recording). And I guess you did not remember that S4 was shortage for several months due to TSMC strain supply capacity, it affected to every manufacturers until Q4 and little later S4 Pro was announced and made it way to Nexus 4.

Sirius will come with this display.

http://www.osa-direct.com/osa[....]inch-full-hd-oled-display.html

There is a prototype in the wild with an OLED display.

Posted by itsjustJOH
^Interesting. I feel 2014 would spawn a fresh Sony, Z1 Compact was 2013 anyway.

Posted by XperiaJunkie
@DACHA as good as that screen will be I think most if not all flagship devices will move beyond full HD displays which personally I think is a waste unless it is on a 10 inch tablet and it is going to be a massive power drain rather than a major step up in mobile displays. Hopefully Sony can get a blend of the 2 correct or it is useless for the customer.

Posted by amirprog
@DACHA
That display looks promising: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KcC8wWk0wx0
but let's take it with a grain of salt, "...and expects to commence pilot production operation in the spring of 2014.": http://www.j-display.com/english/news/2013/20130521.html
also, other rumors suggest 2k display...

Posted by XperiaJunkie
if anything I would expect this screen to make it into a future Xperia device a 5.4-inch WQHD TFT LCD Module at a resolution of 1,440 x 2,560 pixels giving a total of 543 ppi

Well, spring in Japan starts late March, so I guess it might be possible to release it by April although that's two months away from MWC if people can't wait. Dunno, though, might take longer since it's the pilot production. But then again, Sony's a shareholder of JDI so they might get it quicker. Oh, why I crave for OLED for Sony...

also, other rumors suggest 2k display...

Probably another prototype. I'd like the OLED 1080p better, though.

Posted by miromiromi
i'm also for that JDI FHD RGBW OLED although i've read somewhere that sony is not using OLED because of the waterproofing. OLEDs don't do well for waterproof devices they say. hope it's not true.

about time for sony to silence viewing angle nitpickers. also, that should mean a better battery life. enough of the triluminos gimmick.
[ This Message was edited by: miromiromi on 2014-01-08 15:44 ]

@amirprog

I think you misinterpreted the text you quoted.

In addition, JDI has also decided to invest in a pilot OLED display manufacturing line in its Ishikawa Plant in Ishikawa, Japan. JDI will begin to set up OLED manufacturing equipment toward the end of 2013 and expects to commence small-quantity mass-production operation in the spring of 2014.

The way I understand it is that JWI is adding additional OLED production lines at the Ishikawa Plant in Ishikawa. Those production lines will go online in the spring of 2014.

Posted by ascariss
Ya but small quantity production is probably not enough to meet the demand of a Z1 successor or a new flagship.

Rumour has it that not even samsung can manufacture the supposed 2K OLED for their new S5, normal full HD yes and so it seems the next S will be with a sharp LCD at 2K.

Anything above full HD on a 5 inch screen is pointless and just will drain more battery if you ask me. I'd rather take a nice full HD screen, be it oled or LCD, I'd actually prefer oled for the superior viewing angles vs current LCDs in Sonys, but a higher end full HD LCD will do just as fine.

I still feel any high end phone from Sony will arrive at IFA and not MWC.

Posted by DACHA
I agree with you but as far as I have heard Sony will use a 1080p display on all the devices in H1 2014. This might change in H2 2014.

Even the mid-range devices? I don't get why another 5 or 5.2 inch phone from Sony should come in Q1/Q2, it makes no sense, the Z1 is just as good as anything out there and with better software for the camera, will still be great. Samsung sticking a 2K screen on the S5 is ridiculous and will lead to more battery drain. The fact they are re-styling touch wiz is saying something, but it still feels more customized than before and thus could hinder updates from sammie.

Sony I feel should simply the UI to make it as easy to update but still customized to some extent that these features add to the android experience.

Just read this:

"Pilot manufacturing line
・Mother glass size : 4.5G (730mm x 920mm)
Production capacity : 4K sheets/month
・Location : Ishikawa Plant in Nomi-gun, Ishikawa, Japan
・Commencement (plan) : Spring of 2014 (for trial manufacturing)"

4,000 sheets a month?

how many 5.2 inch screen per sheet can they cut out?

Posted by itsjustJOH
Idk how large these sheets are.

Posted by amirprog
@DACHA who knows, maybe you are right. but my understanding from reading it is that the manufacturing line will come from that plant and they wright "4k a month". this is ok for IFA announcement... unless they are going to manufacture the sheets in other plants also.

i think 2k will make even 5" display look better, like jumping from HD to FH - but maybe in less noticeable change. people said the same thing about HD>FH. not every change is supposed to be dramatic. either 2k or w-oled is a good move imo. with 2k they will probably find ways to preserve the same battery time.

Roughly; and without counting faulty screen or gaps between… about 88 per sheet… personally I would count more closer to 70 for real figure

Having 4000 sheets/months means 352k for 88 and 240k for 70…
Good number… but higher faulty screens will mean lower numbers… and higher cost also

Posted by -XYZ
2K screen on mobile is nothing more than dick-waving.

"Oh look how many pixels I have!"

Largely pointless, as it will only worsen battery life. The improved clarity of the display will barely be noticeable at all.

2K on a 6.5-7 inch device? Sure, I suppose that's fine, but on a 5.x inch screen? Nah...Not necessary. 1080p is more than enough.

Posted by amirprog
@-XYZ
It's smarter to make conclusion after you hold FHD and 2K smartphones side by side in your hands. a lot of things in display are noticeable only after comparing two different devices.

Posted by ascariss
The plant will be doing a trial manufacturing run, so 4,000 sheets is at best when the plant will be running at full capacity after all kinks are worked out, assuming yield will be good and production quality.

Assuming anywhere from 3-6m trial manufacturing, then the earliest time for production samples would be June-September time frame, which is not enough to warrant using in a flagship, there will be not enough to go around for mass scale production, let alone financially viable.

Sourcing panels from samsung would probably be cheaper and easier, but then the subpixels would not be RGBW but pentile.

Are they not better concentrating on the US? It seems that the millions they spend gaining market share in China can easily be lost with each Japan / Chinese spat.

I know this isn't a rumour, but I'm truly confused: Is the Xperia Z1 Compact (and thus, the Z1f) using a IPS panel? Or it has a TFT one?

What about the Xperia Z1, Tablet Z and Z Ultra? Do they use IPS or TFT?

Almost every LCD screen (TN, VA, IPS, MVA etc) uses a Thin-film transistor (TFT) Even AMOLED. I Mean TFT is not a screen panel

Here, you will find the answer of What panel Sony used on Z1
[Discussion] Z1 display lottery. Again.
and This (Very Informative)
demystifying Xperia Z1 ( Display technology revealed it is AMVA pannel..)

And Yes Z1 Compact uses a IPS panel, Thats why the Z1-C has better viewing angles than some Z1

Sounds awesome!
I guess this combines the best of both worlds, high contrast, deep blacks, low energy consumption and high brightness.

I need to buy this

Yes, two panel vendors. They are almost identical, both are IPS with ~ 1400:1 contrast and similarly wide viewing angles.

There is no loser in the panel lottery this time. I've seen it in person and compared it to a Z Ultra, it is better than the ZU screen IMO, better viewing angles and slightly better contrast. They both had the same PPI as well at ~340 so they are directly comparable and IMO the Z1-C won out.
