I wonder if the name "Z1s" will be the global name for this device personally I think Z1 mini sounds better for the UK market as it instantly tells customers that it is a smaller more compact variant of it big brother Z1s sounds like an upgrade to the Z1 just like how Apple name their own smartphones.

I think "Z1s" will be the name of the Z1 mini T-Mobile version, for the global version unknown yet.

Guys calm down regarding these 192 cores...

the number does not mean higher performance or higher energy consumption... it's all related to how powerful these cores are and how efficient these cores are...

Just remember how many cores are in Mali-450 MP ( from one to 8 cores ) and how many cores are in Tegra 4 (60 or 72 cores) and how much Mali-450 actually perform compared to Tegra 4...

We just need to wait for real world numbers and see how this GPU will perform... in any cases NVIDIA did some serious optimisation to Kepler cores in order to make them viable in mobile applications, after all Kepler cores were designed for desktop and high performance usage...

I have always been a supporter of this:

Guys

Z1 successor will be named Z1s and it will be appeared at the first half maybe CES
Z2 will be in the second half of 2014
Z2s will be the first half of 2015
Z3 will be in the second half of 2015 and so on

But for the mini and the ultra Will just be with no s

As Z1 ultra, Z1 mini
Z2 ultra, Z2 mini as so on

...

This information I just got it, from the same source that told me about the Z and ZL in the past

Anyway, someone wants to chat today? If yes, is there a new chat room or still just the one from last year? What is a CES without chat ?

I think they don't use Z1 mini to avoid confusion. It's far different from other minis so they don't want people to mix them up.

Mini is not going to be used because Samsung Mini's are usually much worse than their full versions... so if they call it Z1 Mini, people will think it has much worse specs, just like S4 Mini has a lot worse specs than S4.

So samsung will be apparently launching 4 new tablets, all with kitkat and all with WQXGA resolution, even the 8.4 version. Anything from Sony has to be up to par to this, otherwise the product will fade away into nothingness.

Maybe there won't be any new tabs from sony at CES and instead it will be a copy of last year's move, introduce the new tab in Japan first, then at MWC. Which will be fail.

they just launched their cheap tablets, their new ones will be much more expensive like their Note line and probably nobody will buy them.... Only Android tablets that sell well are dirt cheap ones like Tab 7" or even cheaper Chinese ones.

Sony will probably launch new Android tablets thats for sure, but they will likely be premium versions like their Tablet Z.
WQXGA resolutions dont make any sense on small tablets, it is a waste but people just read the specs sheets. Reviewers are not any better when they get impressed with high res Windows hardware thats terrible to use in real life because of too high res.

I do hope Sony also launches competition for new Windows 8.1 tablets, with new Atoms. They seem to be all the range now, with good pricing and great performance.

When is the CES ??

Now in LA.

In Sony Mobiles Christmas message they mentioned:

“2014 is going to be an incredible year, we’ve got some truly exciting products coming up, new form factors to explore and more from our wearables team.”

.. could this be a hint at a return to a qwerty slider, maybe with Windows Phone?

Sony passed yet?

Posted by mobisekim
Tomorrow morning for the DGL will first look at a preliminary review of the main novelties of the CES from Sony. Good news for those who are tired of spades

ummmm...what?!

anyway, WHERE ARE MY LEAAAAKS?

Posted by itsjustJOH
I'm pretty sure those tech blogs covering the event already have the device/s.

Posted by goldenface
I'm surprised there has been no leakage. We have some idea of what to expect but it's always nice to be surprised too.

Posted by CrownedAkuma
I would love Sony to announce something unexpected:) it would show that when they want they can leave us in the dark without leaks:3 last Ces we know even too much! It wasn't fun going ahead perfectly knowing what to expect:D
I love this!

ˇedit: Are you referring to me, CrownedAkuma? I thought Kaz Hirai’s keynote is today, but it is not until tomorrow... That's why I edited that part out of the post.

So, 8 hours until Sony’s CES press conference and 24 hours until Kaz Hirai’s keynote as of this edit (18:00).

On the Sony official blog it says
Keynote at 5 PM PACIFIC STANDARD TIME!
I live in Italy (+1 from Greenwich) so shoul it not be 9 hours of difference? (And here the time is 5:48 PM)... So it should be in 8 hours and 11 minutes... Maybe I'm mistaking something:)

WTF? LOL

I just posted the time left to the keynote according to my clock at the time I posted lol

I know it ~might~ be a joke, but I've been here for almost 2 years. Since when I have trolled? lol

Looks like the "stop the leaks" project from Sony is doing a nice job and so far nothing from the show leaked, except maybe the variants of z1 and Z1s for the US, but nothing new here.

^ This no leak policy is great for Sony springing surprises on us with products we know nothing or very little about its almost like a second Christmas but on the other hand no leaks can make forums dull and boring.

Sony will launch at least two Windows Phone devices says Digitimes

Posted by Ambroos
If it's true, they're ODM devices (like MediaTek devices). Carry the Sony name but are made by a third-party company and only intended for a limited release.

(MediaTek devices have some of the Sony software but they're always ports made by external companies. There's very little Sony about those phones. Sony only develops for Qualcomm + Android.)

So, ASUS are launching the Zenphone 6, which has stylus functionality. You can write on it with any pen or pencil. In other words its like the Xperia Z ultra.

I wonder if any media outlet will notice this. Or will they believe that the Zenphone 6 was the first, and gloss over the Z Ultra like it never happened.

Posted by Gitaroo
to be honestly, the functions sounds great in reality I don't believe it works until we get a screen that is impossible to scratch.

Sapphire!

I kid. Its unlikely any vendor (unless its a novelty edition) would use Sapphire sheets for the screen. It would be nice if they did, but its too damn expensive.

I was reading some weeks ago on digitimes that the iPhone 6 will use sapphire display.

And i also just read about bezel less display

Now it will cost like a Vertu Constellation...

Qualcomm have disappointed. A lot. 2 years of leading has inflated their ego so much they thought they'd slightly tweak the s800 slightly throughout the year and get all the design wins again.

Nvidia HAVE to capitalise on this. Which leaves manufacturers in an awkward position. And necessitates a refresh 2H.

What's the best possible chip an android tablet can come with in march/April?

Why? Then, the manufactures will have the excuse to leave the older devices and therefore ending the software support, generating fragmentation (Still, We´ve to see how 4.4 and Project svelte prevent the fragmentation) .. Anyways the S800 and S805 are enough powerful for a high end mobile device

Posted by Away
They are enough for high-end devices? In my opinion, a dual-core krait with a good gpu and 2gb ram with around 300ppi is enough. But isn't it funny how Qualcomm, about 7 months into 2014 will have barely improved on the chip which powered devices almost year before that point? (I'm referring to the 805 of course). When's the earliest we'll see modified ARMv8 from Qualcomm? Next year? What will the devices released at IFA be powered by?

Any device at MWC will use a s800 unless it releases a few months after announcement. HTC might have the s805 thanks to Qualcomm owning shares in HTC.

Manufacturers almost never have the excuse to leave older devices. In most cases, they only do so because they want people to have to upgrade way before it is necessary, so they make more money. I think if they upgraded devices for 3 years, they'd have a lot more customers...

It's sad to see Google going in that direction too with their nexus program.

Here's hoping for a Nvidia 10" tablet with a good screen asap...

Im gonna get in early here and request that when the new mobile devices are announced today, new (dedicated) threads are created for them so that we dont fill the rumours thread with info on announced products.

edit: Never mind, I created a z1s/mini thread already:
http://www.esato.com/board/viewtopic.php?topic=206500

Once announced, Ill post info there and request people carry on discussions of the device there. Pretty please If there are other mobile devices, I hope others follow suit!

I'm here to remind you that, HTC now 2nd tier customer for Qualcomm and company barely make profit for year.

As far as inside talk few weeks back, SD805 will begin mass shipment on right around H2' 14, but still possible for HTC to bet with it (while Samsung has none) but trade off for a small volume that could risk of shortage for them.

Last thing, Android is still not support 64 bit by any mean, so I don't fancy with ARMv8. IMO, maybe two years for flagship-line in Android space could take fully advantage from 64 bit on both hardware and software. In the case we're on technology fast track and something real bad doesn't happen with it.
