@Detox
I'm not saying that your thought is impossible of happening but I meant for flagships announced at CES/MWC and IFA in recent past since Kaz took over:
xperia T MSM8260A > xperia Z MDM9215M > xperia Z1 S800 > ? = always new processors for new flagships. we could also say the Z1 is a "refresh" of the Z.
they will only announce a refresh at MWC. mark my words (or not).
i think that the consumer see S800 as S800 and the Z1 mini will hold the flag until MWC...
on top of that, there are no leaks of a flagship - i don't think that sony is that good with their no leak policy. i would at least expect to see a leaked list of final spec a few days before the 7th if not a photo.

ZOMG also mentioned this recently:

"I have heard that there could be some good news at CES and the new Xperia "Sirius" Z1s is supposed to release on at least two of the four major networks. Though I have heard that before and it hasn't materialised so I tend to keep it to myself these days. So much BS from SCA middle management these days."

At least we don't have to wait long to find out what this good news might be

@vivftp could you ask zomg about what the financisl report for Q4 2013 might look and what will be Sony's strategy in TV division?

zomg has been going on about how he feels Sony needs to dump their TV and VAIO division ASAP to focus on their other products. I dunno if he has any actual insight into what's going on. Either way, we should find out all about their TV innovations in just 2 days

Come on CLED!!!!!!!!!!!

Bloomberg: Sony Said to Explore Sale of Gracenote Audio-Recognition Service

From Bloomberg, Dec 17, 2013, 7:17:06 PM
Sony Corp. (6758), looking to shed units to focus on fewer products, hired Frank Quattrone’s Qatalyst Partners to explore a sale of its Gracenote audio-recognition software business, two people briefed on the matter said.

Ok, here is what zomg just said about the TVs:

"4K LCD. Slightly fancier backlighting. No OLED and CLED. Sony have dramatically scaled back OLED investment for consumer grade products. The announcement was made on Christmas day, as it is a good day to bury bad news."

A damn shame

Supa_Fly:

Sony already agreed to sell Gracenote to Tribune for $170 million:

Sony has to be profitable first. Right now the TV and Vaio divisions are bleeding money like nobody's business.
If they can return to profitability based on the PlayStation, Mobile and Camera systems divisions, along with maintaining and increasing profitability with Sony Pictures and Sony Music (damn shame that Breaking Bad has now finished) as well as their financial service division, then all will be good.

I mean, nobody's saying they should scrap the Bravia and Vaio divisions altogether. There is every chance, that Sony could re-enter those markets once they've set themselves a better financial foundation.
If they don't want to stop production, then they can reduce overall costs by out-sourcing various components to bring the failing arms, back into the green.

Either way, SOMETHING needs to be done.

What do we know about the upcoming tablet? I assume it's to be shown at MWC. What else though?

It's too early for the s805. Tegra 5 or s800?

I'm certain there's no worldwide z1 refresh only because there's no worthwhile, marketable chip upgrade. Along the same line, I think it's likely for there to be at least two 10" tablets next year, one shown at IFA so they remain competitive, unless they call the MWC one tablet Z2...

Posted by ascariss
I feel that the tablet Z1 or Z2, whatever it will be called, should ship with a S800, and most probably a high res screen, so anything along the lines of the new note 10.1.

I would prefer an 8 inch tablet from sony, running android, but I'd actually prefer the 8 inch tablet to be running baytrail and also on windows 8.1 with android as a second boot OS. It is something intel will be pushing this CES apparently.

Posted by Xajel
I would love to see a Laptop+Tablet that can be used a smartphone second display, wether by having MHL input in the laptop/Tablet or by using Screen Mirroring... but having a laptop with MHL input is cool already

Now they need to find a way to send touch command in wireless and MHL also... donno if that mobile DP specification will allow such use or not...

Posted by Wishmaster89
No! Please don't sell VAIO division, I just bought my vaio pro 13 and I love it
They should strengthen the relations between vaio and mobile division to make phones and tablets perfect companions for their VAIO PC's.

About that 4k TV it may not be CLED and it has edge LED but it still has great picture quality with almost perfect screen calibration according to the reviews I've read so I can't see what's the problem with it

It's hard to change everything in one year so decisions shouldn't be made based on emotions.

Posted by MartenR
Imo in Vaio division they should focus on two high end products with big margin; one ultrabook and one laptop, pretty much like what Panasonic is doing with their 4k tablet which probably has huge margin. In TV division they should outsource everything except for their Trimaster professional TVs. Sell their shares in Olympus which is up 150% on year and invest in Xperia or buy more shares in Sony's financial services or use it to restructure the entertainment division.

Just give me a super thin 13" Vaio laptop running Android. Why hasn't Sony done this?

Posted by MyP910
Please don't sell vaio and bravia. I love both of these products. I have vaio duo 11 and vaio tap 11....both of these vaio are very good. I don't think there is any other notebook that can beat the vaios. I will pick vaio tap 11 over mac air anytime.

I have bravia W8 series.... And I'm super happy with it.

Again, I think vaio and bravia are very good products produced by sony.

Who the f*** wants that? Seriously....?

The market barely supports Android tablets and Chromebooks, so how could this possibly be a good idea? A company which is struggling to make any profits, shouldn't waste a shed-load of money making a high-end ultrabook and load it with Android. Throwing money from an already unprofitable division, down the toilet.

Apparently enough people for Lenovo to launch one recently. And please don't tell me Lenovo don't know what they're doing. And who the f*** mentioned "high-end ultrabook" ?

^Honestly, an Android laptop ain't going nowhere. It's a niche product. Lenovo is in a better financial state right now to produce experimental products, Sony ain't.

Posted by Ricky D
Actually, I wouldn't mind seeing something like the Asus Transformer series from Sony. I very nearly bought a Transformer in the past.

The Asus Transformer series would do better if they had a touch of Sony style and a stronger brand image about them.

Also, what's so unbelievable in using android as a productive OS? There are plenty of apps out there for productivity and a physical keyboard/mouse/touchpad just adds to the feel. If, similar to what goldenface suggested, a 13" android tab with detachable keyboard came along I'd seriously consider it. But the name... Xperia Tap Tablet Z1 13? bit of a mouthful!

"Snapdragon 805-powered Sony Sirius to come at CES": http://www.gsmarena.com/snapd[....]_to_come_at_ces_-news-7483.php
s805
5.2" inch 2k display
3gb
20.7 mp
3500mah
4.4 kitkat

seems like half rumors, half prediction, but anyway, either that spec or don't announce the Z1 refresh cause it would be too similar to the Z1. less then that base spec would not be appropriate. sony aim for third place in this industry so they better bring the best possible.

When one says "Super thin 13" Vaio", I would imagine that its high end.
Unless of course that Laptop is running Bay-trail and not Haswell ULT...in which case, its a tablet with a keyboard, more than it is a Laptop.

And Lenovo have more than enough money to throw away on products like this. Do you have any information on how it performed in terms of units shipped/sold through?

Either way, this is hugely off-topic. The success or failure of Sony's Vaio division can be discussed in another topic.

Holy moly, killer specs imho!
Can't wait!
Sounds a bit like a dreamphone for CES, hopefully the dream comes true.

Posted by XperiaJunkie
This will not happen until 2nd half of the year Sony have already said that the Z1 will continue to be the company's flagship into 2014. CES 14 will bring the Z1 mini maybe the Xperia E1 and E1 Dual and possibly a few surprises we know nothing about but definitely no new flagship.

Such a flagship is not going to debut at CES, it may come in concept form, but that would be pointless. Sony has already focused on the high end, and now it is time to go to mid and low end with their phones to cover all the bases.

CES is will probably focus on other aspects from sony, not so much mobile I feel. I could be wrong, last year's show was not bad, but I feel Sony could step it up this year to blow people away.

Posted by XperiaJunkie
^ Totally agree with you, like I mentioned it's almost a dead cert we will see the international version of the Z1f, possibly the Xperia E1 some wearable tech and personally I would like something else to go with the QX Smartlenses ie a magnetic xenon flash would be great but highly unlikely.

Posted by amirprog
I agree that sony need to announce Z1 refresh at MWC and focus on other devices at CES. definitely.

Posted by lewiztoner
I also believe there will be no refresh z1 at ces. Probably only xperia E or no xperia at all. Because of the China tease of mini z1.

I don't understand why Sony sold Gracenote. They were making money, although not big amount. Also Gracenote were trying new business.

@ vivftp

Where do you ask zomg about Sony ? I want 2 ask him if Sony will have a vaio s15 successor.

Is this possible to make a PS4 based Windows 8 PC? If it's possible then Sony should go for it.

Actually it is not impossible at all, unlike the PS3, it uses x86 cores, which are compatible with Windows 8. (PS3 used POWER from IBM and PS2 and 1 used MIPS if i'm not mistaken). Sony and Microsoft decided to use x86 on their consoles to ease development as it is the same architecture as PC, in fact the APU used is pretty much the same APU you found in laptops powered by AMD, only with more GPU units. I definitely would want a computer OS on a PS4 too, not necessarily Windows, even Linux would do. (the only drawbacks Linux currently have over Windows IMHO is gaming, and PS4 already have it covered so in that case i don't care at all) That would make PS4 the cheapest gaming computer on the market.

Posted by MartenR
I think it would be a good idea because with all that raw power if they add vegas pro and photoshop preloaded it would be able to go against Mac pro and through using same hardware as PS4 they would be able to save money and sell it with big margin.

Posted by Away
When ridiculous gets ridiculouser.

Anyway, add this to the rumours: a 4:3 Sony tab in 2014. Most likely IFA.

I wouldn't go that far though, Mac pro have a lot more horsepower, 3 or 4 times more, PS4 is only good because of it optimisation and low level access to the hardware. It would be good for small workloads, definitely not vegas pro or after effects ... for more info : http://www.anandtech.com/show/6974/amd-kabini-review (the gpu part of the review is irrelevant, only the cpu part is the same as ps4, for info about the gpu, check AMD 7850 review )
and btw, i wouldn't expect the possibility to install an os from sony, but from a hacker. remember, they actually removed linux from the ps3 after it was sold...

I already know the hardware and the possibility of the PS4.. I'mn not talking about capabilities to hold Windows 8 or else... I'm just talking about the the fact that it is the direct enemy of the Xbox One, which is microsoft console, first of all if Windows 8 should arrive on a console it would be the Xbox... after and only after it could maybe come to the PS4.. but I mean how could or would want Sony to have Windows 8 running on PS4? so that people could install steam and stop buying games for the PS4?... It's completely wrong!!!!
by the way hihihans is right! back on topic

Posted by karim128
I agree with you completely, i only expect win8 (or any other desktop os) from a hacker. (i just wanna add that even if it happens, you won't be able to run pc games on the ps4, jaguar cores are too weak for gaming without ps4 optimisations)

Is the supposed z ultra wifi only also supposed to be debuting at CES? I only wish Sony would just extend it's screen to make it 7 inches, or even 8.

Also accessories, perhaps more better bluetooth headsets, especially with built in noise cancellation as well.

Okay, give me a Sony tab with the tegra k1 denver. Now. Or any tab even...

After 3 hideous generations, Nvidia are back. And they mean business...

1H release date for a15, 2h for denver.

I was wondering what my dream mobile chip setup would be before before this announcement, and I thought 2.5gHz duals with good power and efficiency, well, it seems we got the power at least...

MS used to pour money into Nokia for making WP and they had the same offer for Samsung. Do you think they are paying anything to Sony for doing so?

192 coreeeees! LOL! Our phones are going to explode...! I was hoping for something different too! Will see how many actually end up using this monstrous chip

@MartenR
I'll believe it only when I'll see it! I'd prefer Sony to try out Ubuntu (Firefox OS needs a lot of polishing before being on a big name OEM's) on some low/mid end device's!:)
How about dual booting Android and Ubuntu?? SWEET

Posted by ascariss
So samsung will be apparently launching 4 new tablets, all with kitkat and all with WQXGA resolution, even the 8.4 version. Anything from Sony has to be up to par to this, otherwise the product will fade away into nothingness.

Maybe there won't be any new tabs from sony at CES and instead it will be a copy of last year's move, introduce the new tab in Japan first, then at MWC. Which will be fail.
