Android 4.3 announced, bringing incremental changes to Jelly Bean

Google finally unveiled Android 4.3 at today's breakfast event with Android and Chrome head Sundar Pichai. Still dubbed Jelly Bean, this update follows in the footsteps of versions 4.1 and 4.2: it introduces a couple of major features and a handful of smaller ones without drastically altering the Android experience introduced back in version 4.0.

More follows. . . ..

Some older Xperia phones running Android 4.1 are still under examination. There's a possibility that at least some of them will be updated straight to Android 4.3, but no names have been confirmed yet.

Additionally, Sony acknowledges that its updates haven't been "as succinct or as timely as you might’ve expected." The company's developers have now changed their workflow to assure that future updates arrive faster. The whole procedure is detailed in a lengthy and educational blog post, in case you are interested.

xperia T only get 1 update 4.0.4 to 4.1.2 it sholud get 4.3 !

Posted by Supa_Fly
Xperia TX would be nice to get this as well. Maybe the XDA community will produce a clean build where you can add the Sony components on afterwards. Here's to hoping.

I'm no longer a fan for Nexus branded devices and I no longer believe in the plain 'vanilla' android philosophy!

Posted by Tsepz_GP
Neither do I. Lost interest in 'Vanilla Android' when I got the GS3 and even more so when the Note2 landed with it's SW features, made me truly appreciate what these OEMs do with Android.

Posted by randomuser
Yes, T/TX/V certainly will get it, or they might skip 4.3 for 5.0

Posted by tk007
Hope Xperia T get it

In the meanwhile I'll be testing it...

Posted by Tsepz_GP
Nice one Tranced, how is it running on the Nexus S?

Posted by tranced
As of now it is running fine. Just installed Instagram so far. Low battery so I cannot test much. Will report tomorrow with more tests.

Posted by tranced
It was smooth indeed. The battery didn't improve much. I wish there was an official version for this. In the one I had the location setting was not working. That made me go back to the CM10.1.2(4.2.2).

Nice to hear that the T is getting it. The T is still lightening quick.

Android 4.3 coming to Samsung Galaxy S3 and S4 in October, no word on Note 2

The announcements of the Galaxy Note 3 and the Galaxy Gear might have been the stars of Samsung’s IFA event, but there was one announcement that Galaxy S3 and S4 owners will want to hear more than the new Note and smartwatch – Samsung has said that both the S3 and S4 will be receiving the Android 4.3 update in October.

That’s much welcome news, even if some might not like the idea of waiting yet another month or so for the update, especially those on the S3. As for the Note 2, Samsung failed to say anything about it, which is sad considering it is yet to receive any major update since its launch, and for a flagship device that carries the entire phablet market on its shoulders, that’s disappointing and very deserving of the criticism from users.

Android 4.3 will include mostly under-the-hood changes, such as OpenGL 3.0 support, Bluetooth 4.0 LE, always-on Wi-Fi location reporting even if Wi-Fi is off, support for more languages, and performance improvements. Expect to see some of the new features from the Galaxy Note 3 as well.

Android 4.3 spotted on Samsung Galaxy S3

Could the year old Galaxy S3 receive Android4.3 even before some OEM's late 2013 flagships? I wonder.

Some great work by HTC...

Shame about the Droid DNA, seems it may end at 4.2.2 for it.

What happened to Sony being quick and all that, been rather quiet in here about them since the whitelist announcement surely Z1 and Z Ultra should be getting 4.3 soon? Ah well anyway...

Samsung releases official Android 4.3 update for Galaxy S4 (GT-I9500)

I'm glad Samsung kept quiet when Android4.3 was released, and chose to FIRST WORK ON THE UPDATE and THEN begin talking about which devices are being updated just before they update them.

Tsepz_GP, has Samsung released an OSX app to sync music (track/playlists) from iTunes/movies/Doc's etc? I ask only because the last screenshot shows a Mac keyboard (from a laptop) and the Samsung S4 (or some variant of their existing lineup).

Thx

To be honest, I haven't got a clue, I've never bothered to even connect my GS4 to our iMac here at home, only connect it to my laptop.

no Z1?!

Posted by Tsepz_GP
Hence why you should take it too seriously, Z1 isn't there and they mention Z Google Edition which doesn't exist, not to mention they list the Xperia T twice.

Posted by hihihans
It's not that T is there twice but one has "yes" and the other is "no"

Posted by goldenface
What significant changes are there in this update? Can anyone say?

Posted by Tsepz_GP
AFAIK OpenGL ES3.0 support and TRIM are the main things, mostly under the hood and performance improvements.

Samsung expanding Galaxy Gear smartwatch compatibility to the Galaxy S4, S3, Note 2 and many others

Samsung's Galaxy Gear smartwatch wasn't much of use for anyone but Note 3 owners until recently, but that is all about to change, as Samsung announced compatibility with its most popular handsets.

Galaxy Gear will be now compatible to those Galaxy S4, S III, and Note II owners who got the Android 4.3 Jelly Bean update that started rolling out in Germany first.

Later on this month, a whole stable of Samsung phones will also start to get the compatibility update. These include the Galaxy S4 mini, S4 Active, Mega 5.8, Mega 6.3, and S4 zoom. Of course, as usual, the update availability will roll out gradually through countries and carriers, but the wheels are in motion, so if you sport any of the phones mentioned, you will soon be able to flaunt a Galaxy Gear on your wrist, too.

What happened to Sony being faster at OS updates and all that talk? Thought 4.3 would be out by now for Z, Z1 and Z Ultra at the very least.

Sony reveals its Android 4.4 KitKat upgrade plans
"Google officially announced the 4.4 KitKat a couple of days and today, Sony has revealed its Android upgrade roadmap. In an official blog post, the Japanese manufacturer has also announced its plans with the 4.3 Jelly Bean roll out.
As promised, Sony will be bringing the Android 4.3 Jelly Bean to its Xperia Z, Xperia ZL, Xperia ZR, Xperia SP, Xperia Z Ultra, Xperia Z1 and the Xperia Tablet Z. The software roll-out will begin from next month and as usual, the upgrades will seed region by region."

The Android 4.3 Jelly Bean upgrade list just doesn't end with the top-tier smartphones. Sony has confirmed that Xperia T, Xperia TX and the Xperia V will be upgraded to 4.3 Jelly Bean.
Sony is also the first smartphone manufacturer to break the news about its Android 4.4 KitKat upgrade cycle. For now, the Xperia Z, Xperia ZL, Xperia Z1, Xperia Z Ultra and the Xperia Tablet Z will be in the queue to get the latest 4.4 KitKat update.
Google has already announced that the 4.4 KitKat is designed to scale and automatically fit on the devices with as little as 512 MB of RAM. So, the update might eventually make it to a numerous Xperia devices, but no further model names have been confirmed at the moment.

dont think my s2 will get 4.3 but maybe 4.4

Posted by Tsepz_GP
That would be great Daviep, Samsung are still doing maintenance updates to the GS2 anyway, but I'd be very happy if it got 4.4, not even Googles own Galaxy Nexus is getting 4.4.

So that's the GS4, GS3 and Note2 on 4.3 now
It's just a matter of bug fixes and revisions for Samsung now, and sorting out the GS3s update which for some was quite buggy.
We are now waiting for 4.4.
