MeeGo may not be gone after all. A group of former Nokia employees has banded together to resurrect the ill-fated operating system -- previously seen only on the doomed Nokia N9 -- ready to create new smart phones powered by MeeGo.
Describing MeeGo as "something wonderful -- the world's best smart phone product", the ex-Nokia staff have banded together to form new startup Jolla -- that's Finnish for 'dinghy', Finnish phoneme fans. The plan is to develop a line of new phones using the MeeGo operating system.
The plucky band of MeeGomeisters is headed by the former principal engineer of MeeGo at Nokia, Marc Dillon, leading a team of top MeeGo talent.
MeeGo was developed by Nokia and Intel as a smart phone operating system to rival Android and iOS. The free, Linux-based OS only appeared on one phone, the N9, before Intel got cold feet and abandoned the platform. Nokia subsequently signed on with Microsoft's Windows Phone operating system, paving the way for the Nokia Lumia line-up including the Lumia 800 and Lumia 900 and leaving MeeGo well and truly out in the cold.
From our brief glimpse of MeeGo, we rather liked it. The Nokia N9, pictured above, never came to these shores but we got our hands on it last summer, and there was more to it than a dress rehearsal for the brightly coloured, slickly designed Lumia range
Of course, any operating system is only as good as its ecosystem. In other words, for an OS to become popular, there has to be lots of apps -- but in order for developers to be inclined to make lots of apps, the OS has to be popular. Until Jolla can address that by encouraging app developers to make MeeGo apps, it's unlikely to mount a serious challenge to Android and iOS and their app stores stuffed full of cool apps and games.
Then again, not everyone uses loads of apps, so perhaps if the phones are the right price, the right look and the right friendly experience, they could bring MeeGo back in style.

Meanwhile, Jolla Mobile have presented their OS last month: Sailfish, not MeeGo, nor MeeGo-based, but (like MeeGo) based on Maemo. A new OS with different UI.
Apparently they already have contracts with a few large Chinese operators, so they'll be able to start production, not known yet with which hardware partner.
Have seen several Sailfish-videos, but hardware is also important and before I can say I like it (or not), I'd have to see the actual phones it will be running on. Jolla's presentation only showed the software, on the developer's phone Nokia N950.
The reason, many (we too) love the N9 is not only for it's OS, but also because it's a beauty, with Nokia's good build quality.

Oh Maemo, a true power users dream mobile OS, i still look at the N900 and think to myself "what could've been", its the main reason why i dislike the MS and Nokia deal, Maemo and MeeGo just required a few more refinements and they would've been far better than WP8. Ah well.

meego is not dead.. they just renamed it to tizen I think. The Linux Foundation is still "all in" ..
The harmattan UX is dead.. which is brilliant UX.. best one so far imo.

Actually the Meego APIs were integrated into the Sailfish os project by Nokia's olds Meego team, built on the Mer base.
Tizen is the project that Intel went to after leaving Meego.
I very nearly bought an N9 purely for Meego's ui. It was one of the most innovative interfaces I've seen. It can run android apps too with a little tinkering.
I hope Sailfish sees the light of day in mass release. It'd make an intriguing second OS for Sony especially as it doesn't take much for it to run android apps

It's ppl like you that keep saying that fearful of a disruptor to come along and shine to show things can be done better.
If it sells it's NOT dead. Ppl have been saying BlackBerry is dead for almost two years sorry three now and their still alive no financial debt and once again under new management with new focus.
The developer community has made great strides with leaked os builds. Z10STL100-3/10.2.1.1259.
I'm on very slow Internet connection due to weak signal si typing is 5 words behind what I've already typed.
I too can run Android 4.2 apps.

I like your optimism Fly, but I'll have to disagree.
Developing applications is getting more expensive with more resources needed. If I was a developer, I would look at the established bases with a huge customer base first. Android and iOS. That's two platforms that I have to develop for and support, now I might add the third one, but after that I am not taking any chances or time with more platforms, especially new ones. It's a chicken and the egg effect. Devs want to make money and don't want to develop for a new platform, on the other hand a platform cannot grow without developers supporting it.
This is evidenced very clearly by Microsoft having to pay to have applications ported to Windows Phone. Who will develop applications for a completely new platform with an unproven and an unstable developer behind it.
The market supports a maximum of two, maybe three platforms, maybe. There is no place for Sailfish and other hobby projects when there are three of the biggest players involved in the game.

I just hope Jolla gets to somewhere with all this. LG is ressurecting webOS in smart TV's. At least something.
I wish Nokia turn to a better page mobile phone wise after 2016.
