How long is a piece of string?

Twice the length from the middle to one end.

What if the string makes a U-shape? What length were you talking about? Actually of the string?

The design will stop changing when they've made their final decision on it. Either that or Ambivalent was hinting that it's a transformer... (Now let's see you add that to your spreadsheet lol).

@jianlin

There was no point deleting that comment, because the new message still isn't Sony related, lol.

Anyway, on topic, Sony love supporting developers, what could they do to help developers dual-boot Ubuntu?

Posted by JoJotaro
Dual-booting would have to be built into one of the OSs I guess and I don't see that happening, especially considering how limited space we still have on these devices. Btw has any of you tried Ubuntu for PCs before? There are many issues with Ubuntu that don't make it user friendly beyond doing very very basic things imo...

When does Sony expect on finalizing the design? If it is to launch this summer in China there isn't much time left...

Posted by Shotokan81
Thanks for picking up the os conversation.

I am not a dev, but if Sony looks at this thread, i would summarise the alternate os popularity so far as below:
- ubuntu: 3
- jolla: 1
- windows phone: 1
- firefox: 0
- vita os: 0

And i think Sony could make a great os by branding an own ubuntu touch flavor, which is something canonical seems to support according to marc shuttleworth video posted few pages earlier.

Off topic, Sony, please also consider forking/flavoring ubuntu and sell PCs with it along windows 8 pcs.
MS seems to have less grip on pc makers nowadays.
We would call them Ubuntosh!
Gimp, libreoffice, enough great software is available, it helped me migrate to osx
So no need to include a dual boot to windows, sell them side by side for a cheaper price.

"Sony Planning Xperia Z Google Edition, Says Insider"

Does it come from here? Did I miss this?

Ubuntu lacks in many ways as an OS. For one there aren't many applications and the ones that do exist can't be compared to Windows counter parts. There is no app to replace Photoshop, Maya 3D etc. LibreOffice can compare to MS Office. Hardware support is not very good at all. And if this wasn't enough there is no standard installer for apps. If you can find everything you want in Ubuntu Software Center that's okay, but not everything is there. Task management is also horrible.

I believe most of these issue will be present in their mobile OS too. A good experience on it would be limited to very basic stuff.
Another issue is that, developers support what's most popular because that's where the money is at, and to make something money is needed. If the OS is used for low end devices that aren't really popular the OS won't get much support. There is nothing Sony by them selves can do. Android only became popular because a lot of companies supported it very well and Google did a very good job on constantly improving it.

Posted by Away
I get all of that. But with mobile phones with the power they have even today maybe can power some basic stuff, like libreoffice. All you'd need is a screen and a few other peripherals. With a tablet with the OS, all you'd need is a mouse and keyboard.

Windows phone might support that in 5 years, and who knows, chrome and android may unify in that length of time too, but with Ubuntu, maybe that could be mainstream in 1-2 years if someone put the effort in.

I believe the Z Google edition rumours were started by you know who on you know what forums, not this one, and a certain site has a habit of following him so all other sites got it from there. Only someone crazy would go for it over the normal Z because unlike other phones, it has too many useful touches to lose, but as has been mentioned a few pages ago, it's an easy way to break into the US market.

And a lot of people would love to see vita os, but that's another story, lol.

The Honami could be either announced or teased there.

Posted by randomuser
Hmmmm so I guess it might be Togari launch since there will be simultaneous events in Germany and Shanghai (at least, maybe more locations as well)

Posted by goldenface
And Honami is expected to be announced in China in July?

Posted by g-ryznar
I repeat the question asked earlier. Do Honami will have oleophobic layer? In the case of almost perfect in every way smartphone misunderstanding would have happened if the layer did not hold.

Posted by randomuser
^

I have no info about that, sorry.

@ramu

How is Sony planning to announce Honami? Would it be like how Samsung and Apple do it, a big solo event? I'd want them to announce the phone right after Nokia Lumia EOS, I'd want the Honami to murder the hype of the Nokia rival right away.

Posted by cableguy
Honami will have competition from Nokia
http://www.engadget.com/2013/06/06/nokia-eos-rumor-leaked-images/

Posted by Shotokan81
Ubuntu and hardware support: agreed, and that is why if supported by sony, it would at least work perfectly on the sony xperias and or vaio. Again, i would not brick a honami to play with ubuntu and loose the camera function. As a non dev, i need makers to ship ubuntu.

App ecosystem: it is clear that any new os will have issues to compete with ios and android. But honestly i think it will not stay like this forever (sorry to state the obvious) and makers should start build new things. Not everyone uses more than 15 core apps on a smartphone, and open source apps on pcs are increasingly replacing all commercial apps i was using.

Ubuntu lacks as an os: i do not disagree, i always had issues running ubuntu as a whole. My main pc is a mac, and my second older pc runs mint xfce. Mint runs very well on old hardware, it shows what pc makers could do if they wanted.

I think this is a very interesting time, windows is phasing out, android showed that linus coul be credible and makers have choices, and many are eyeing apple success. You have amazon and kindle android fork, you have samsung with tizen, even though i did not get what their content is. And if you think about sony, they have tons of content, music, movies, and ebooks and games. It is not a full ecosystem but it is a good start, i wish they create software optimised for their hardware and open to apps and open source applications.

Sorry for off topic, but actually there is an alternative to photoshop in ubuntu, that is GIMP. As for Maya 3D there is Blender 3D for Ubuntu which after seeing works done in Blender 3D I could say it has the same or even better potential than Maya 3D. Some 3D modelers even say Blender 3D is even better than 3ds Max or Maya. For browsers there is also Firefox for linux. For media Player there is VLC for ubuntu, so yeah it's almost there as an OS for the typical user but I agree it definitely needs more polishing and support done to it specifically to its compatibility, but the potential is there.

As for Sony making a phone running ubuntu mobile in the future, I will definitely be interested in it, as long as it will run butter smooth and as open as android allowing bluetooth transfers/USB mass storage I think it'll be a great alternative to android, It'll be like the replacement for the now obsolete symbian.

Posted by JoJotaro
Blender 3d does in no way compare to Maya, nor does Gimp to Photoshop. I've used both. Also there are many more options on Windows for better video playback than horrid VLC.
If Honami is launching in July when is Sony finalizing everything? Last we heard I think the software was behind schedule.

Posted by reeflotz
Agree with gimp not being up to par on photoshop, but Blender? I've seen works done on it and definitely has the potential as a 3D modeling program both for typical and professional users, it all depends on how much you know how to use it's tools. As for VLC being horrid true for a power user who likes a lot of filter tweaking, but for typical user it should get the job done on Ubuntu, as for windows me personally I don't use VLC for my Hi10p mkv.

EDIT:

I know I got off topic sorry about that, so I'll just ask a question regarding Honami, @Randomuser does Honami have a lens cover just like those on the old cybershot phones? sorry if this has been asked before.

I guess it is just the beginning. All this is so predictable.
They should tie up with a phone maker, for instance fujitsu, and deliver great camera phones globally.

Same with NEC they should hook up with guys like olympus rather than sell the mobile division abroad.

And Pana should not give up on phones, or they can say goodby to lumix and to camcorders someday because people will buy smartphones and much less point and shoot.

Fujitsu, NEC, Pana, toshiba, they were (are) all selling pcs, how is that working now with win8 stellar success and people buying ipads/samsung phones and tablets?

Curious to see what will be left of them in a few years, i hope they find some way to survive in the electronic consumer market.

SONY: Pease make a great honami and show Japan inc how to turn a business around!!

Posted by Ricky D
My main requirement from Ubuntu is to have it as a developing platform, my current (and future) web apps that I develop work best with the local test server is based in linux. Android isn't strong to use as a workstation for web development, the IDEs and the suport isn't there, on ubuntu it is.

It's the back and the camera is cunningly hidden under the thumb.

I don't think this will be on my shopping list. Need a good leather sleeve for my Tablet Z first.

@shotokan81

I hope you're not implying that the cat was not welcome in that picture just so we could get a better look at Sony's attempt at a new market segment...

I hope it has decent economics and comes with a carry case, lol. The cat would also make a welcome accessory.

I tried balancing my kitten on my Xperia Ion. She fell and it was just horrible. Sorry Janny.

Geez Togari spypics, motto motto!

But DAT picture depicts Togari as unbelievably thin

Perhaps it will fill the empty space of 7 inch tablet that is missing from SONY

Yes but essentially it will be larger than a big phone i.e. the xperia z, but smaller than a phablet i.e. note, and therefore between the two whilst being closer to a large phone than a phablet, so therefore a Phoablet.

Posted by JoJotaro
It has a 6.44 inch screen, that's larger than the Note and any other phablet! So maybe a mablet (mini tablet).

Posted by Away
@unknown13x

Welcome! Good you're finally here!

Between the Z and togari, if you want to balance a cat on your phone, pick togari. Otherwise, honami. Simples. Seriously though, I think Sony are very serious with the togari, software hardly leaks, I think there will be a few pleasant surprises, maybe with stylus features and accessories (which, from Sony, are usually expensive, but oh well).

Yeah fine okay, you're right. But I still like the term Phoablet and to be honest the Togari is too big, if bigger than the note, and in that case the Honami is better. Anything bigger than a Phoablet (which is what the Xperia Z and Honami are : 5 inch screens) is ridiculous.

Posted by moogoo
xz and honami aren't phablets. 5" screen is still just a mobile phone.
