"The Science Behind Of More New Member Of FAMILY PUREVIEW"

The 8.7MP PureView one has been built from the ground up with the thought to resolve the issue that plagues smartphone cameras the most, due to their smallish sensors - low-light performance. Nokia didn't achieve that by placing a huge sensor behind the Carl Zeiss Lens, like on the 808 PureView (Phase 1), that will capture more light, but rather went the other way around.

Its engineers managed to build a tiny spring-based system called "Floating Lens" around the camera unit in the Lumia 920, that keeps it steady regardless of your shaky hands - the main reasons low light shots with phones become blurry. This true optical image stabilization is purely hardware-based, hence it allows the shutter to stay open longer, and the sensor get more light on its surface without the risk of blurring the image in the meantime.

A pretty clever idea to get a 1/3" sensor, like the one in the Lumia 920 PureView (Phase 2), perform better in certain low-light photography scenarios then the huge 1/1.2" surface in the 808 PureView (Phase 1). And we all know that when there is enough light, all flagship smartphone cameras perform with decent results now.

The 1/3" sensor is no larger than in your basic point-and-shoot camera, but the Floating Optics Mechanism make its footprint in the phone larger, hence the slightly chubbier physique of the Lumia 920 than what we are used to see in today's flagships. On the right you can see the raw specs of the new module, that Nokia is entirely an in-house endeavor, developed in conjunction with Carl Zeiss as its most challenging project to date.

Instead of trying to fix individual lens elements, like with other OIS solutions, the wholel module of the camera is wrapped in spring mechanisms. These floating optics therefore allow much greater precision, correcting for up to 500 movements per second! This is precisely what allows 8x longer shutter speeds, and ensures your pictures will get much less blurry when taking them with one hand, which we so often do with our phones, and your videos won't be shaky all over.

Then comes the LED flash - instead of going with Xenon, which has some downsides in a smartphone environment, Nokia says the recent developments in LED are leaps and bounds ahead of the advancements in Xenon, so the Lumia 920 uses the modern pulse LED for a flash. It is capable of firing an intense burst of light for a very short time, that essentially freezes a moving object. Not short to the extent Xenon does it, but much better than conventional LED flash, says Nokia. Furthermore, the LED module can serve as continuous light while filming video, and of course doubles up as a torch.

Last but not least, Microsoft has worked very closely with Nokia to interwove the Windows Phone 8 camera software exclusively for the PureView sensor in the Lumia 920 PureView (Phase 2). Not only is everything, such as autofocus, auto white balance and so on, tailor-made for the sensor, but Nokia has included its unique denoising algorithms that keep the footage looking natural in low-light conditions.

Looks great. Nokia are back in the game now.

Sadly, it didnt come with a 41mpx sensor which is rather disappointing. I would have liked an 808 beater.

Posted by Bonovox
Maybe that's planned soon. I would prefer the silver color for this phone yellow is too loud

Posted by etaab
Silver would make it look like an iPhone 3GS.

Even more so with the lesser phone announced today with its curved corners. Im sure Nokia are not wanting to get into Apple's bad legal books.

Etaab...

Digital Zoom Lossless And Pixel Oversampling Would Really The "Icing On The Cake" The Lumia 920 PureView !

Sheez.... Both 920 and 820 would've deserved better threads, than this crap.

Anyways, 820 supports SD-slot, 920 doesn't.
Both have NFC and LTE connectivity, so please update the first posts of both threads.

@TeeGee:
Agree, this thread sucks!
Doubt that a sensible discussion about this phone will be possible here.

But that yellow 920 deffo has my name on it

@Guarulhos:
Please read TeeGee's post and update the first posts of both the 920 and 820 thread accordingly, to get at least the specs right.

What a fail. How can a 1/3" sensor be called PureView... The talk about image stabilisation is crap. It's true it helps in low-light situation but it's still a lot behind simple Xenon flash, which this phone lacks... Calling this phone PureView is a sales gimmick. Very disappointed in Nokia.

Nokia Faked Its PureView Demo and Then Claimed They Never Said It Was Real

"When we watched the latest ad from Nokia showing off its PureView technology in the Lumia and ridiculously fluid optical image stabilization, we were stunned. Excited. Happy. If the camera on the Lumia was that good, we wanted it. Badly. Immediately. But sadly, it was faked. Nokia isn't showing off what the Lumia 920 can dothat video was shot with a big DSLR."

Liars!

They demoed an image stabilizer they never said it was the Lumia they said it themselves. People just nit picking at petty things. Who cares??

Posted by ILoveBhe
I do not know if this can be called a flagship phone, its specs are as not as impressive as other brands... Nokia will still struggle this year...and the coming year...this is not going to take them to better position

Nokia made statement today, that it wasnt video from 920, it was from professional camera. I looked today at camera specs, 8MP pureview sensor? Thats seems like pureview faking, I dont think it will be any better than S3/Ip4

Posted by admad
Provide high resoultion photos, then we can talk about quality. My old k800i was able to produce stunning 640x374 photos

Posted by Tsepz_GP
Turns out Nokia faked the video:
http://www.gsmarena.com/nokia[....]n_apology_for_it-news-4765.php

They may have also faked the Images:
http://sefsar.com/nokia-faked-the-still-photos-too im not sure of how credible the 2nd link is.

What the hell has happened to Nokia??? this is the last thing they need.

Posted by randomuser
^
It's on PhoneArena too, about the images being faked. Really sad !!

Posted by admad
I can't believe how stupid they are, but I'm almost certain it's Microsoft doing... All they had to do was to put 808 sensor in Lumia 920. They wouldn't have to fake anything then, as it's superior quality is already proven...

Posted by Sugarkane
I think now Nokia is jizzing in own pants
Following RIM steps to the _ABYSS_ ...
Funny huh !?

Posted by Tsepz_GP
With WP8's hardware capabilities it would have made complete sense to use the 808's camera in 920, or atleast a slightly smaller version of it with Xenon flash. This is some terrible PR for Nokia, its bad enough that the 920 and 820 are underwhelming.

Posted by Sugarkane
Look!
Maybe Nokia's prototype are fake too !!!

http://www.phonearena.com/new[....]e-the-still-photos-too_id34160

Posted by randomuser
^
Well those "prototypes" are actually retail DSLR cameras

LOL.

And true, 808 Pureview + Win8 would have been awesome. And the Lumia 920 is a heavyweight already at 185 grams, so I don't see why they couldn't make a Win8 Pureview with 20mp or even 41mp.

Posted by Bonovox
In all honesty I couldn't give a flying f**k. It's a gorgeous phone with great specs and all we need for a great experience finally with same features of an Android handset. I fail to see how it's"underwhelming" when it does everything and has everything most Android phones have with some new cool features. It doesn't need quad core,it can't make the dinner yet people whinge saying it's not enough. Not enough,so what's missing?? It might be missing one or two things but no phone is perfect. For me,Windows phone with HD screen @ 4.5" , 1 gig ram,1.5ghz,1080p video,8.7 mp camera, dual core with S4 processor along with loads of new features Windows didn't have before is plenty enough as an upgrade. Windows now has SD cards too except this one for some reason but you get 32 gigs anyway. The new look UI looks beautiful on that HD screen. Am sure the camera will be good whatever the fakes went on. I seen a You Tube video somewhere showing how good the flash was in the dark and it was excellent. I love that fun new feature where you can animate part of a photo

Now updated with proper Lumia photos

http://m.gsmarena.com/nokia_lumia_920_sample_images_found_to_be_fake_as_well-news-4769.php

Posted by Sugarkane
The only three relevant things on this phone are:
1 - Nokia (itself smells reliability)
2 - QuallComm S4
3 - Screen

The rest is just normal now.

Posted by Bonovox
Yes normal as in it has the features Windows has needed for ages. It doesn't need to have quad core to compete. Features that are normal now in most Android phones. You tell me what it needs then?? Something pointless

Posted by Bonovox
http://m.gsmarena.com/motorola_razr_hd_maxx_m-review-809.php

Now looking at specs of the new Motorola phones I see not much difference with those specs to the Nokia. You talk out your backside

Posted by Sugarkane
I'm talking about hardware for a WPhone, Bonovox.
Things that realy make difference to the end user.
The features inside WP8 aren't Nokia's work. (not at all)

Posted by Bonovox
Like what?? Explain??

Posted by Tsepz_GP
Who ever said it needed Quad core though??? The S4 Krait CPU in the 920 has an architecture closer to A15 making it more powerful in some aspects than the current A9 based quad cores so that is not the issue at all here, many current androids from mid to high end are using that chip to.

The issue here is that No.1 People were expecting a mind blowing camera with the sort of sampling tech we saw in the 808PV, so we expected something like a 30MP Camera that samples images down to 8MP to give them great detail, like in the 808, what we got was a good camera that isn't a great deal better than GS3 and iPhone4S, and is NOWHERE NEAR as good as the 808's camera.

No.2 This phone is incredibly important to nokia, and the WP eco system, its much like how the Galaxy S and Nexus phones are important for Android, and needs to be not just the same as the competitors but far ahead of them, but its not. That's what makes it underwhelming.
