It shouldn’t come as any surprise to see iOS and Android dominating the mobile landscape, but new information from IDC confirms that to be the case. Both iOS and Android now account for 85% of smartphones shipped during the second quarter of 2012. Android is said to have around 68.1% market share, up from 46.9% in 2011, while iOS sits at 16.9%. All in all, around 154 million smartphones were shipped during the quarter.

RIM and Nokia both suffered huge slides in the wake of iOS and Android. BlackBerry OS now holds 4.8% of the market, down from 11.5% last year, with RIM shipping only 7.4 million handsets during Q2. Symbian has also taken a massive beating, falling to 4.4% from 16.9%. Windows Phone has gained some market share, but it’s a small victory.

Still prefer Windows Phone over them all. Android bandwagon is over rated. Have recently moved back to Windows after another stint with Android and its a breath of fresh air using Windows again. I sometimes wonder why Android is so popular. Somebody once mentioned on here that Windows phones are not TRUE smartphones. That's bull

Figures! The Android Juggernaut seems unstoppable right now - it seems to be getting better and better, although I still wish the best for Windows Phone and Symbian - if they can get it together.

Think it will with WP8 but I care not for popularity as long as it works for me. And the notion that Market Place on Windows has hardly any decent apps is a myth. Anyway Android maybe will stagnate someday

Well that's bound to happen eventually. The last thing we want as consumers is just one dominant OS.

Absolutely nothing in Windows lags compared to Android. Why is it that on Google's OS you can't delete the trash from your Google Mail inbox yet you can on Windows??

Seeing stats like this makes me only think that Android is what Symbian was 5 years ago. maybe Google should start thinking about making their own "true" desktop OS to give Microsoft some competition or at least support Ubuntu in their quest.

Android will stagnate in countries like USA, Canada, Australia, Nordic countries and the UK, but in places like the BRICS countries and the continent of Africa? Its going to grow and grow like mad thanks to OEMs like Huawei, ZTE, Pantech, BLU, Micromax etc... Seems Android will be the one that reaches "the next billion". All those OEMs have been clever enough to make deals with the networks in many of those countries so as to tailor the phones for each market. Here in SA we have Huawei who are sneaking in with some excellent smartphones e.g. the Huawei Ascend P1, coming in with stock Android4.0, dual-core 1.5GHz CPU, qHD 4.3inch display and 8MP Cam with dual-LED Flash, all at a much lower price than a year old Samsung Galaxy S2, yet with similar specs and performance.

Its going to be VERY hard for WP and iOS to keep up in terms of growth, especially with WP8 demanding multi-core CPUs and 1GB RAM, and all the other standards and limitations MS has put in.
