Which one then ??

Your thoughts please.

Are you talking about what type of Symbian would be best in our opinion ?

If so, it would always be Belle. Belle brings a lot of incompatibilities with older apps and functions, but its ten times more worth any previous Symbian version for its ease of use like Android.

I would have to say Anna.... My N8 never had any problems prior to my update to Belle and now it freezes at least twice a week.... here are some of the other things that really drive me crazy

-most of the good apps are no longer supported like Slacker radio, delta air lines, most all the google products and Jouku wifi hotspot just to name a few...
-the emial client isn't a nice as the Anna client was
-I dont like that I can no longer just click on the date on my home screen to bring up the calendar.
-Current profile is not shown on home screen in clock widget at all any more, not to mention you only have the power button for fast switching between profiles.
-Redundency of menu key on screen right above the physical key is really lame.
-NO weather app works correcty with phone now...
-When typing a message, if you hit the back button you wind up at home screen, it never brings you back to folder view.... it seems to forget about that screen.
-ZERO File orginization.....

the ONE thing I do like is the fact that they copied the android pull down notification idea.... really slick

Dude, a lot of what you have mentioned work fine on my N8 running Belle.

- Joikuspot wifi hotspot works fine, just make sure you toggle wifi and data on in the drop down menu
- the email client retains all the same functionality afaik or can tell.
- issues relating to Symbian of old where you had quick clickable widgets to the calendar or profiles can easily be added as shortcuts or widgets
- Nokia maps weather plugin works fine - just use the one available from Nokia beta labs
- when i type a message and press back, it goes to folder view. Strange yours does not..
- Symbian still comes with a complete file manager built in and works fine for reorganising folders

Thats is ODD... My phone won't even install it so turning wi-fi off is moot

Same basic functionality but on Anna if you "decline" user agreement, you could set up Gmail as real time push which is no longer an option. Also, the widgets are WAY TO BIG.... I miss the Anna widgets where I could have more three email widgets (for different accounts) on the same page. Belle will only allow to fit two.

- issues relating to Symbian of old where you had quick clickable widgets to the calendar or profiles can easily be added as shortcuts or widgets

Yeah, but it was much more convenient to have them all in the same widget instead of having to have four widgets to accomplish the same exact thing..... and its not like the calender widget, profile widget and clock widget are small or even resizable for that matter.

- Nokia maps weather plugin works fine - just use the one available from Nokia beta labs

Great.... this actually helped!! lol... I did a reset on my phone to see if I could get jouku to work seeing as you said it worked on yours, and although it still will not function on my N8, maps weather works now.

- when i type a message and press back, it goes to folder view. Strange yours does not..

Nope... not even after hard reset still..... try this... have somone send you a message... reply to their message then hit the back button a few times to get back to your folders where all your other friends would be or where inbox, outbox, sent folders are..... does that work... if so, thats odd becasue as soon as I hit back the first time out of that message from my friend, Im at the home screen.... so dumb

yes, I know.. my bad.... not what I meant... I mean I liked how all the file/apps/folders were arranged..... I realize I can set my own folders up but thats just crazy to me that they lumped all apps into the main menu.

Think Symbian Belle is better probably on newer hardware

etaab... your screen shots brought up another thing.... not such a bid deal but maybe there is a way to do this Im unaware of....

1) for anna, you were able to still see to-do's even if they already passed so you would know what you still have yet to do.. on Belle, once that date is past your event/to-do is removed from the panel.... really annoying as I always forget when to change my oil! lol

2) On Anna the widgets were somewhat translucent so it still allowed some visibility for your wallpaper which is not the case with belle

3) I miss being able to just touch the dots at the bottom to move betwee screens and HATE the call button in the center

... The anna home screen just seemed so much more "productive" to me... I miss it....

You can downgrade.

Phoenix software suite and the Scandinavian DG firmware.

It works, there are tutorials out there, takes it back to pre Anna so you can than update to Anna, used it myself yesterday.

really? is it fairly stable that I woun't brick my N8? Can this be "undone" if I have to warranty my phone, or would they even care (ie does this void warranty)

Stable ? Yes.

Easy ? No not really, needs some PC know how, and getting the right files.

You downgrade to PR1 then upgrade to whatever version of the firmware you want, there are a lot of tutorials out there, Google is your friend

Search downgrade N8 firmware.

If they found out it would invalidate your warranty, but once you are back to the correct firmware, be it older they have no way of knowing.

If i remember right i had issues installing Joikuspot when i first updated to Belle, but somehow i found a way around it. As for the email, have you tried going into the settings for each mailbox, going to the auto retrieve option and then scrolling up ? it amazing how when you go into this menu the top displayed option is 15 minutes but theres actually an option called soonest which i assume is for pushed messages.

I do agree however that the widgets are sometimes too large or too small. Belle was meant to give us resizable widgets but they've now been put off until the Belle feature pack coming later this year. Apparently. Since now i can have 6 homescreens i find it actually easier to have a whole homescreen devoted to calendar and contacts, one for apps, one for email accounts and one for social apps.

As for your message inbox going back to the homescreen, this is how mine works. If i go into the messaging app from the homescreen it goes homescreen > conversations view > girlfriend (for example i click on her messages). If i then press back, it goes back to the list of conversations. This makes sense to me as i want to go back..

Now, if i receive a message i click on the notification to open the message, read it and then press back it goes straight back to the homescreen. Which again makes sense to me. Its intuitive that when you're alerted to read a message you get the option to reply or go back to standby. If i had to mash the back button several times it would be counter-intuitive. I think Nokia have really thought it through rather well.

Anna and previous versions of Symbian were more productive i agree, but Belle hasnt lost that productivity its simply streamlined the interface to make it more attractive and a joy to use to the average user. I was rather happy with Symbian 3 even before Anna and to this day find it much more powerful as a work tool than Android or iOS from Apple.

Btw, one last note of caution, if you downgrade you'll more than likely lose the camera interface update and improved video quality. For a phone like the N8 i dont think any imaging sacrifice is worth it.

Maybe Ill stick with it.... I'll try your idea of separate screens for certain types of stuff... the ONE and ONLY thing really holding me back is the pull down... i really find that VERY VERY nice.... and I know if I go back to Anna, Ill miss it! ..... Fine, you talked me into it, I won't jump ship on Belle quite yet but man are some of those thing frustrating!

...Back on Topic.

I'll say I agree with etaab that the "thought" put into Belle is superior but I still like the Anna functionality best.

I've done this several times myself. You use Phoenix, and you downgrade first to 11.005 (a pre-release version). Then you can upgrade to any version you want.

Look at this thread at Dailymobile: http://forum.dailymobile.se/index.php?topic=60902.0

I thought going back to Anna wouldnt bother me that much but a couple of weeks after i updated to Belle i got hold of a friends N8 who is still running Symbian 3, not even Anna (she wont let me update it for her). I couldnt believe how clunky Symbian is now ive got used to Belle.

I dont think Belle has lost any functionality at all, in fact its gained imo.

The one thing i love about belle is being able to turn off mobile data and wifi from the notifications pane. Ive lost count the amount of times when on anna i found an app still connecting to the internet when i didnt want it to or it didnt need to. The only control you had was to turn off the widgets on your homescreen and not apps running in memory.
