Hi guys! This month's theme is The Golden Hour. Via Wikipedia:
In photography, the golden hour (sometimes known as magic hour, especially in cinematography) is the first and last hour of sunlight during the day, when a specific photographic effect is achieved due to the quality of the light.
In other words, during sunset or sunrise the light is really soft, there are no harsh shadows and the colours are more vivid. Many photographers use it to capture landscapes, cityscapes, etc, I've even heard of landscapers who never take out their camera during normal daylight (at noon for example).
A few (clickable) examples:
The usual rules apply here, too:
- Picture must be taken with a cameraphone
Picture must be taken during March 2012
No photo post-processing allowed
Picture taken must be in accordance with the theme
You can change your entry once only
Full size picture must be uploaded to http://www.esato.com/phonephotos/, then post here a resized picture and a link for its full size. (add "_n" before ".jpg" in the full size link of your pic to get the thumbnail version)
Let the competition begin now! Good luck to all participants and thanks to everyone who voted for me last month

The Golden Hour
I suppose we can also capture The Violet Hour. When the sun goes down.

Nice theme, hoping for better weather now

Hehe, there is actually a Blue hour They say the best night shots are taken exactly during it since there is still some light in the sky. However this isn't easy as it requires a tripod or steady hands, plus we already had a similar Night landscape contest
Let's hope for a lot of entries this month!

But isn't this basically just sunset/sunrise??
[ This Message was edited by: Bonovox on 2012-03-01 19:38 ]
Posted by io_bg
Not quite, you don't have to shoot the sunset/sunrise itself. Just try to capture the soft light the sun produces at these times

Yeah it's a good shot! By the way, what white balance did you use? I think the pic has a greenish tint.

Auto :-/

Think that may have been the windscreen slight tint. It was actually sunrise through fog

Sorry wawawee. You're supposed to capture the sun.
Posted by io_bg
Not quite. Anything shot at sunrise or sunset light is allowed. So you can shoot landscapes, cityscapes, portraits, nature... almost anything

A rare blue sky day in Beijing. Just opened the curtain this morn and saw this.

That is one great shot

Thanks rikken, although it actually looks a better on my arc, you can see the lens flaring clearer and it's beautiful. Maybe it's the Bravia engine doing it or maybe it's just the difference in screen quality compared to my Series 9 laptop.

Very nice entry

What a great shot, interesting perspective too!
Ricky, nice entry too, unfortunately even DSLR lenses would produce similar flares when shooting into the sun. They're mostly unavoidable.
Posted by io_bg
Here's my current entry... Taken about 45 minutes before sunset
I hope I'll be able to take a better one soon
Posted by etaab
I was going to enter this but here in the UK we're struggling with weather as always. Im afraid we dont have such sunsets as those in Thailand and the others posted here.
