Forget About Android 4.0! Google Exec Hints Android 5.0 Will Launch In Fall Of 2012

Android is force that will not be stopped. Google’s Andy Rubin announced yesterday that there are 850,000 daily Android activations, excluding devices like the Kindle Fire that don’t use Google services. Now, even though only one handset is currently sold with Ice Cream Sandwich, Jelly Bean might launch later this year.

Speaking to Computerworld, Hiroshi Lockheimer, vice president of engineering for mobile at Google, suggested Android 5.0 will launch in the fall. He stated “In general, the Android release cadence is one major release a year with some maintenance releases that are substantial still.”

Only barely one device on the market with 4.0 and they are releasing 5.0?? Seems a little rushed

When you see it as one major update a year then it doesn't really seem that rushed. 4.0 will be out from next month for Sony / SE phones and 5,0 will probably be a year after that.

If you mean they are announcing them too early then I sort of agree.

I did mention this somewhere else here the other week

Is this really that surprising? It's the same pattern as before, this time last year only the Nexus S ran gingerbread, In about 4 months every OEM will have updated their handsets to 4.0 and it will become the standard. Around Autumn people will at this point be wondering what is next with Android. Now it seems that its a bit to soon, but I think that's only because 4.0 still seems new, and to be fair it is. But a lot changes in a year!

Its like this every year.
They reveal minor details of the new OS at Google's annual I/O Event which is around May if im not mistaken? Then somewhere in August or around there they announce the new Nexus phone and release it with the new OS.

It's not really Google's fault that the OEM's pack their handsets with so much rubbish to try to 'differentiate' them that it takes them half a year to implement the new release.

Here's an idea Sony - ship your handsets with vanilla Android and allow users to add your crap software via Apps if they choose. Now that's being different.

Its partly Google's fault as from what i know they keep the development of Android in-house, the manufacturers dont get to touch it until the final build is out which is IMO, VERY STUPID, if it stays like that then Android fragmentation will always be there, and kind of takes away the whole "Open Source" idea.

What should happen, IMO, is that Google should work together with Manufacturers of phones and CPUs right from the beginning, this will create synergy, and allow faster OS updating, as by the time the final build is done ALL will be on par, and then each OEM can LIGHTLY skin their handsets, but allow the base OS to be updated by Google themselves.
Until that happens expect the same ol' late updates year after year. I can see why developers are losing interest.

Im a huge Android fan but this is getting frustrating to me.

Jelly Bean is going to only be an update. Not sure of any specifics but it will not be a major iteration.

Key Lime Pie is going to be the next proper version update.

But since my lousy Arc runs 2.3.4 still, this news doesn't interest me like it should.

I love the fact that Google is just as fast as Ubuntu in releasing their OS since we always get to see new things without limitation, they can counter whatever new tricks their competition would pull, but unless we can now install smartphone OS on our own just as we usually do with PCs, fragmentation will always keep haunting both developers and users.
