As I am sooo going to get this (already thought about preordering it for 449,90 in an online shop here in Germany), I sized it up to the phones I have here and it came out quite well. So glad it's not too much bigger than the Nexus S!

Posted by moogoo
449 euro is still about $575 US dollars... that's not bad but i'd love it to be cheaper!

can't wait for more information about the materials used in the body

Posted by rickster2kuk
I wonder why it is quite heavy at 144g, that would be the only thing that would put me off slightly.

I do like the form factor of the arc, but it the S is a solid construction then I can except a slightly more bulky phone.

Would be interested to see the camera samples, if they were like the ones previously leaked that were supposedly from the Ion then the camera is a massive improvement on the Arc.

What a beauty i wont be getting it though, not as powerful as a GS2 unfortunetly and my next phone be quad-core, but it will be interesting to see how this does, but i hope SONY stop using these Qualcomm CPUs and does what Samsung do, create their own or use TI OMAP.

Because the new Xperia range announced is called the 'NXT series' and they talk about the interface of this series being the UXP look. They probably want to differentiate this series and so wont update the 2011 range...

I believe the UI used in the older series was also called UXP. Nothing new there. And the NXT only referes to an updated design language where the transparent buttons will be part of all Xperias in the NXT series.

Are you sure it is a Widget ? Looks more like a Theme selector or something similar.

Posted by xell
These are the Timescape Widgets, as you can see from the icon on their edge.

Posted by moogoo
sorry i meant the third photo.. and yes, thanks xell.. i see that now. wow.. looks like timescape has changed a lot. can't wait to see a walkthrough of this...

I'm looking carefully at the official images ... looks to me like the body of the xperia S is some kind of plastic. i'm assuming that if it were magnesium, they would say so in the description like they do for the ion? no one has mentioned it in reviews either... :/ that is kinda disappointing if it is plastic.

On the Engadget podcast thing early with the guy from SE USA, they pretty much confirmed that the Ion has an aluminium back and the S is matte plastic, much like the Nokia Lumina.

Are the notifications built into the clear bar at the bottom? Can't work this out as a photo on an earlier page shows a green light in the top corner, which means charging has finished or battery at 100 per cent.

hmm.. that's sad that it's plastic again, but as long as it's SOLID feeling, i'll be happy and the fact that it's 144g should make it feel pretty sturdy in the hand.

I haven't seen any videos of the notifications in action, but the video from Three, the guy said the light bar changes color depending on what's being used. I would say it's kind of a waste having an light bar that just illuminates the icons. Much more effective if this entire lightbar can change color and do lighting patterns based on the notification. that would be slick. Of course these would change to solid white once the phone is woken up and unlocked and then if notifications are still unread, they continue once the phone goes into standby.

we shall see i guess... if any insider has one and can confirm what the light bar can do, please chime in. Thanks!

The Ion seems to have a metallic back. I think or hope build will be more solid with it not having a removable battery

Im not exactley liking the new bang on SONY logo
but the phone itself looks good it is also going to be intresting
watching the loop hole on these

Post the link please. I've won stuff before too.

Here is a sample image, taken indoor (remember: early firmware / hardware):

I said this was the perfect phone before, but I stand corrected. After learning more about it, Though it's still a great phone, it's still not my ideal. It looks really awesome, though. tons of cool features. but I want an expandable microSD slot, removable battery, it's just 2 of the things I want my phone to do.

This seems like a android version and more capable iPhone 4 S. better design, too.

Posted by marcink
Looking at the sample, I still see to much postprocessing but maybe a little less chroma noise. But this is iso 100. So that's not really good:(

Posted by moogoo
it looks good for early firmware... i'll reserve any judgments until final firmware samples.

i've never been one to expect perfection from my phone camera... that's why point and shoot cameras still exist and what dSLRs are for...

I just want something that looks sharp and has good color reproduction at a reasonable size. I don't care if its super grainy when it's blown up to 100% on a computer screen! If i wanted a photo i was gonna print at that size i'd use my dSLR. I'm happy if i can print a photo from my phone on a 4x6 or maybe even an 8x10 and it looks sharp.. i'm happy. i can even fix the color in photoshop or any of the myriad of photo editing apps on the market (picsay is my fav).

I don't get why everyone is so damn critical of phone camera sample shots, especially on early firmware, when there has been no standard conditions to take the photos and no base comparison with another known sample. Also, we all know when taking a photo with any camera, the photographer matters.

sorry for the rant

@adsada,
The "S" in Xperia S signifies: Successor, Smartphone (?), and most importantly Screen (720P). I'll agree that this device hails the original Xperia while changing the 'Arc' to help feel better in the hand.

@Admad,

Reason for imbedding battery:
1. Ecological and Economical - helps the bottom line; no more manufacturing spare battery's, no more shipping them globally, less costs - easier support (Apple does VERY well in this regard).
2. lifestyle of smartphone users is in the city and by PC/TV etc within a 24hr period in the city never global travellers or in highly rural areas.

@Bonovox,
For this particular product its possible that imbedded storage IS the future (Galaxy Nexus follows this as well if you noticed). Box.net 50GB offer with SonyEricsson is helping quite a bit. As prices for monthly data begin to lower or monthly data caps slowly increase this will help.

Laffen,

might I make a suggestion to have a smart-tag for the Sony logo please like we have ": SE :" for SonyEricsson? Thanks.

I just watched a few previews at YouTube and I'm spotting lags here and there... Especially when you go to the overview mode of the home screen. No matter how many widgets you have, two or ten, it always lags. That's not something that used to happen with the older Xperias. And what about the clock on the home screen ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fZBW0QqSIZs at ) - anyone spotting any similarity to this:

Posted by moogoo
@mediar - just a note.. that's the Ion not the S. also, i think i noticed the lag you're pointing out... it doesn't seem of any concern to me. it's also not final firmware i'm guessing so thats probably something to take into consideration.

and the clock on the homescreen looks like beautiful widgets which is available on the market. you can customize and change the font for the clock and weather.

I though about Beautiful Widgets as well, but I highly doubt they'll put whatever widgets on these units right there.

Finally a decent previews of the UI:

This is not the final firmware anyway, they still have time to improve it. The kernel version in the older Xperias' firmware is 2.6.32 which has undergone a lot of development and received many updates, whereas the newer ones use a different kernel(2.6.35). I guess they are not optimized yet.

Posted by moogoo
looks slick to me.. i'd like to see more exploration of the timescape widgets. the music player looks nice but unfortunately i usually use google music... :/ might have to change that for my most listened to playlists...

just watched a few more vids on youtube... i love it more and more. confirmed, back of the S is plastic according to a video. overall the design is just so much sexier than the ion, especially in WHITE. it WILL be mine!

I prefer the white version. This MAY replace my Arc as my next phone. A bit disappointed that this device is made of plastic and when released comes only with 2.3.7

Posted by Bonovox
I fear battery life will be poor. The battery is not a massive increase and powering a HD screen and all that power under the hood. They should do what Motorola have managed to do on their new handset with a amassive 3330mAh battery or there abouts

interesting vid of ui...

No mention of Timescape at all in that UI video that I heard? Sweet if so! Good riddance to a phone destroying piece of crap.

Also, why have they retained the Sony Ericsson liquid identity on the back? I suspect this will have disappeared once the phone hits launch.

It will have Timescape. Product page says so.

The transfer of SE to Sony is not completed, so some prototypes still have remains from SE.

Posted by moogoo
nice vid... and yes there is time scape but it seems to look different. at least the widgets do. and i like the liquid identity and themes...

I thought the bottom stripe was a silver stripe, I hadn't realized that it was transparent! Cool!!!!

Because Xperia S supports WiDi and DLNA, I hope it supports controlling dedicated future Sony camera that supports WiDi and DLNA with live camera feed from the camera to the phone and live control from the phone to the camera...

Do you guys reckon the build quality of the Xperia S will be superior to that of the Arc having looked at some of the videos on youtube?

Is it just me or are the photos just unimpressive ?
Too much of noise and they almost seem like Arc photos to me. Resolved Detail is also not exceptional.

looks like the sim is standard size and removable?

Posted by tai020381
Sadly, no... editer said it uses micro sim...

Posted by Bonovox
Them camera shots are not so good

Posted by moogoo
hmmm...

i guess if i get the Xperia S, then i'll have to make my way to an AT&T store somehow and get myself a microsim then.. i don't even know if they do that! I've been using the same SIM for yearssssss...

Another video of Xperia S:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7z618jwvC2Q

At 2:14 you can see the new dialer, which, unfortenatelly, looks pretty much like Samsungs' one, but darker.

Posted by Bonovox
Does it really matter what the dialer looks like??

Posted by mediar
It somehow does... I got used to the previous one and I really liked it.

Another video from HDBlog.it ( Part 1 and Part 2 ):

Watching videos of this phone and the ion it looks like the touch buttons are a bit funny - the reviewer often has to tap a couple of times to get a response...

Posted by moogoo
yea i've noticed that too. i think most reviewers are confused whether to touch the icons on the clear bar or not. the clear bar only has the icons printed on them and the actual capacitor buttons are the small dots directly above. they're missing them most of the time.

i've noticed some lag in the browser with pinch to zoom, scrolling, etc. i should be more smooth and zippy i think. hope it improves by the final release!

Also, i don't understand italian, but from the HDblog vid part 1, it seems like he was referring to the LED bar as showing notifications and allowing one to see notifications even when the phone is face down. can anyone verify? google translate conversation mode is not good enough! haha...
