Is the camera better than the Galaxy S2 for pics/video?

I have had both phones and my experience is that the S2 is the better one

I was going to buy the white one m8 but changed my mind last min because it attracts stains. It's kinda like white sneakers not staying white

Had the plastic been glossy like on the Arc S I would have said go for the white one but now unless you have super clean hands go for the black one it's really good looking irl.

Having said that, if you are up to the task of keeping it clean then go for the white one (I'm way to lazy for that )

I have no qualms with keeping things clean. I like to be able to see how dirty and grotty my phone is before I put it to my ear - to be able to see the grime.

When you consider that you might travel on public transport for a good part of the day, sharing handles and escalators with people who don't even wash their hands when using a lavatory, it hardly bears imagining the germs your phone might be carrying around.

I think I'll go for the white version . Doesn't the white version have some sort of ant-stain coating anyway?

I have a white Xperia PLAY right now and it's always spotlessly clean.

As I said, different materials are used on the Arc and the S. Also I never touch handles, escalators public computers or use public toilets. I have to be falling on my face to grab on to a handle on the subway and then I run and wash my hands instead of biting my nails and picking on my eyes Aaaanyways way to much info there about me, go for the white one if you want but be sure to first go look at it (no dummy) at a store and see for your self what sort of stains it attracts and if you like it or not.

We had this discussion in a Swedish Android forum and no one with the white one have had any problem with attraction of dirt. The active UV nano coating seem to do what it is supposed to do.

The ones I tried out at different shops had all dirty brown/greyish stains, that's why I didn't get the white one. But sure it can be because a lot of people with dirty hands try them on.

Agreed - I think SGS2 is even better than One X - the camera to beat still. For me saturation and sharpness are a little better than X S.

X S is still very good thou.

One thing that HTC got right with the One X is the option to take pictures while recording a video, that is great imo.

On the MWC presentation they made it sound like it was the dedicated camera chip that made it possible... Then I guess the SX S will have this feature too.

I am absolutely in love with my white xperia s...feels so much class-ier than the cheap samsungs...

one thing i noticed, the screen definitely looks better on the xperia s than the gs2 when playing temple run...the colours are just all wrong on the samsung.

I know i am a fanboy, and im saying this with lots of prejudice, but this is a killer phone that kicks the crap out of the childish touchwiz on samsung, boring ios on iphone and just looks better than all the htcs that look exactly the same.

Yes, everyone trying one in the shop even before release said same thing. But none as far as I know that has actually bought one has had anny issue with dirt on their white units.

No, GS2 is the ultimate super smartphone, nothing will surpass this masterpiece
in the next 10 - 15 years. So if you have it, keep it! Lol.

Just look around the net and see the comparisons. I don't think many users here
care about GS2. And I'm sure X S is much better.

If this is the same as taking a still snapshot while the video is recording then the W900i had this feature some time ago.

thats what i thought when i looked at the test unit at my local electronics store
i was really disgusted, because it already looked yellowish after several weeks

In that case I don't know why the didn't just use the same wipe-clean material they used on the Arc / Play.

Posted by djin
@goldenface,

W900i could do that?? How? Its my all time favourite phone and still inside the box.. But i never knew that I could do that with w900i?

Posted by goldenface
Actually, I stand corrected. The W900i could take a screen capture while playing back video. My bad.

Because they use an active UV nano coting, which should be better. Just expose the phone to the sun (helps to dissolve dried in soil) and wipe. Beside as I said earlier, no one which has already bought the white one (which seems to be the most sold) have reported any kind of issues related to stains and dirt (we have even had a small poll about this in a Swedish forum).

Davidsic, I'm glad to see you around and still in great shape

I'm prefer the image that display close to realistic condition but which one did a better job in this department

please give me answer, anyway my guess is GS2, because XS looks warmer image overall.

and what your opinion for both cameras (in brief is okay)

Thanks in advance.

Hmm full size pics would be appreciated. Since now the resolution is smaller than Xperia S display

Anyway, it's hard to see much difference, but look at the pavement in second pic, Xperia S did much better job, You can see the texture of each 'stone', while SGS II blurred it.

I thought people said that the S2 had a better camera?

I'm really stuck on which phone to get, I considered the 4S but the small screen is a deal breaker for me, just too small these days although I wouldn't want any bigger than 4.3" I don't think.

So it's between the S2 and the Xperia S, although I have to admit I am not keen on phones that don't have a dedicated camera button which only Sony's and Nokia's seem to have apart from the odd couple on other manufacturer's phones.

Really torn between the S2 and XS.

X S. S2 sucks compared. It's also more choppy and slower, c'mon.

Had my S2 for 6 months and it was never choppy and slow, I still say it is a better deal due to the removable battery and expendable memory and the camera of the X S has a yellow tint

GS2 slow and choppy??? thats THE BIGGEST load of rubbish ive ever read...and ive read a lot of rubbish
GS2 seems to remain the benchmark in Android until the GS3 arrives. Every new Android has been compared to it and most seem either to fall short somewhere or it may lose by a slight margin, very impressive for a year old device.

Exactly.

Sorry for my english but : in good light conditions xperia s make more "pleasant" pics , good details (but a bit grainy compression in full size) and yellow tint which gives more warmer colors.

The S2 is more colder colors but nice though and tends to overexpose a bit (exposure compensation is your friend).

Got my White Xperia S in Mumbai, India today for INR 30,999/-

Got the following included besides the charger:
1) Leather Case
2) HDMI cable
3) Car Charger
4) Headset
5) 2 NFC tags
6) Pre-applied Screen protector
7) 50 GB complementary free Cloud space on Box

Initial Impressions: Wow. Running firmware .62. No new firmware available yet here.

The Screen is terrific. On full brightness blows away other phones with excellent readability in sun. Zero Lag so far.

Installed a whole gamut of apps, switched back and forth between them and had no lags whatsover. The only thing that happened was that Skype Force closed a couple of times.
Configuring the Smart Tags was pretty simple.

All in All so far looks good. No yellow spot issues noted yet. Battery life shall be tested over the nest few days.

The sound and video details are crisp clear. The call volume is also pretty good.

Posted by rickster2kuk
^ Battery life is still horrendous at the moment - holding out for the upcoming update!

Re the SGS2 vs X S camera - SGS2 still just pips it for me, X S (as with Arc) errs towards over saturating colours (rather than cooler SGS2) and tends to be noisy. SGS2 has slightly better detail with less noise and more colour accuracy. X S has better dynamic range thou.

Got my Smart Tags today, spend a little while configuring them - definitely seem a little gimmicky at present but they seem to have potential - set all my setting changes up, but shame there is no enable for flight mode. I wonder if NFC will drain the battery (i.e. having it enabled in settings)?

You sound like a Samsung Fanboy!
Benchmark? Only for Samsung fanboys. It's funny how they haven't seen or handled the newer Android phones and just keep insisting that GS2 is still the best!! That's true 'fanboy'ism..Every new Android? What about Xperia S and One X? The fact is normal people pay for experience, not for specs or benchmarks. Steve Jobs understood this very well. GS2 became so popular because it provided a better experience than the other androids at the time of its release. A fact most Samsung fanboys probably don't understand and keep thinking it's the hardware which sold the phone! Better phones have come out already, which provide better experience. XPS provides better experience than GS2 right now and the specs are on par too. One of my friends who happens to be an apple fan was really impressed with Xperia S and he has handled GS2 quite a few times as well. That was the first time I heard him compliment an Android device! and he said he would switch to a Sony phone later this year if the next iPhone is not better than the flagship at that point.
GS3 will come in a couple of months maybe, wait for a couple of months more, there will be iPhone 5 and Xperia Mint(?). If the latter phones provide a better experience(and Sony and Apple are very much capable), GS3 will have a tough time selling. Times have changed since GS2 was released, the mobile industry isn't the same anymore.
BTW, if someone wants an Android phone right away, choosing Xperia S or HTC one X will be the wise choice. They'll get the next version of Android as well. I doubt if Samsung would update GS2 beyond ICS

Posted by Tsepz_GP
you both seem to confuse being 'The Benchmark' with 'benchmark tests', nobody said anything about benchmark tests
Nope, im not a Samsung fanboy if Sony had launched something far ahead of GS2 i would have said get the Sony straight away...but they haven't.
The GS2 gave/still gives a great experience thanks to the hardware, so the hardware is part of the reason why it sold

Chances are GS2 will go beyond ICS, the GS1 got both Froyo then Gingerbread, GS2 just got ICS, and the next Android will be the final one.

Anyway, back on topic, id say wait until the GS3 is atleast announced before making a decision, if the GS2 is anything to go by, the GS3 will give even next years flagships a run for their money.

Posted by doministry
If you can accept low class design & UI decisions by Samsung, than yes.

Posted by Tsepz_GP
Design is subjective, just because YOU dont like it doesn't mean others should.
The UI decisions are great, its the reason why the GS2 is so fast and smooth over a year later.

Posted by djin
Going by the rumours, gs3 seems to have a good design! Although I dislike the current touchwiz ui, Also samsung seems to be listening to the people right now, so maybe the next one would feel better?

Anyways the price diffrence between xperia s and gs2 is negligible, considering you get hd screen and nfc support. I would probably get xs at this point, but I will rather wait and see gs3, nexus next, sony mint and htc one x 2(w.e it will be called) as I am not in a rush right now..

Nothing special. Really. The UI smoothness is a different thing than the design though.
As I say - again - GS2 is noticeably slower than X S.

Yes design is subjective to some extent. But I say Samsung is the worst designer ever.
HTC, for instance makes dead boring devices too - with the exeption on One series which look much better -
but their UI is freaking polished since WindowsMobile times. I don't like it either but it looks like a tremendous effort and
amazing piece of art.

Samsung looks like a sketch, like a beta and you can't change that.

funny how a year after its release that any comparison tests of the newest phones are vs the galaxy s2

Posted by rickster2kuk
I can't stand mine is better than yours fights. Everyone has their own opinion.

Yes, Sony won't compete directly with HTC and Samsung as Sony is much smaller, but it still does a sterling effort. Just look at the price points; X S is now £380 SIM free, whereas One X is £480 SIM free. Sony have learnt hear by pricing the device right - you want a better spec phone, then it's £100 more - fair enough.

Right now One X is the landmark device and Imho, after their hiccup last year HTC deserve to be back on form, they've learnt from their mistakes and (apart from the size which I don't like) the One X is a beautiful device both in build quality , screen and spec. Is it better than X S, of course on paper!

But people don't always like or buy devices based on it being the best, it's what they are happy with and what they desire in a phone. The X S ticks all of the boxes for me - it's not perfect but it's an evolution. I love the way SE/Sony don't go overboard skinning their UI and I like the whole "package" you get with Sony; it may not have a best camera or the fastest processor, but it's the sum of all parts that I like.

I didn't say anything about benchmark tests either. I know you meant GS2 was a benchmark for how a phone should be made . Of course no phone blows GS2 out of water, but there are better phones. There was nothing like it when it was launched just like the iPhone in 2007 and history tells us other companies have caught up with and even surpassed Apple in the mobile industry. Just because GS2 was far ahead of the competition last year doesn't imply GS3 will do the same thing this year. By that logic iphone 4S should have been the greatest phone now . I bet, if Samsung themselves had launched a phone last month, it would not have been far ahead of GS2!
Yes hardware matters, but how you use it matters as well. We're reaching a stage where all mobile makers will be on a level ground in terms of hardware. AMOLED screens are not exclusive to Samsung phones anymore for example, others have started making them. Today's world is very competitive. If you wait for GS3, you might as well wait a few more months and see what Apple, Sony, HTC bring out. As for the updates, SE updated X10 to gingerbread as well and they have transformed and so have HTC. XS and One X will go a step further than GS2. If you wait for 2 months, you get GS3, wait for 2 more months, there will be Xperia mint, wait for another month or so, there will be iPhone 5, wait for another month, you'll get a google phone.

Just got mine and the device is laggy as hell. Even scrolling on the home screen is choppy. Did I just get a bad model? Thinking about taking it back to the store and asking to try another for comparison, since so many people here report smooth performance and web browsing. For me the interface just stutters terribly, even with the 1.5 dual core processor (nothing to sneeze at, my iPad 2 has a 1ghz dual-core processor and runs like butter) and 1gb of RAM. Even if I stick on another launcher like GO Launcher, performance doesn't improve. Something's up, surely. Maybe I should flash the device with a custom ROM, or wait for ICS?
