Well not that, but I'm still happy with my arc and don't think I really need the upgrade just yet

Posted by NightBlade
I bet you just want to get your hands on a Mint/Hayabusa later this year.

Posted by adsada
ha you know me too well! Don't get me wrong its an amazing phone, but I love my arc and this way I can keep the money for a future xperia when I actually need an upgrade

I was going to wait for Mint/Hayabusa too but the contract I got for this one is so good I couldn't pass.

Learn from Apple!? Each to their own, but the xperia arc is the perfect size for my hands, and if you want to opt for the smaller 3.5" devices just go for the Xperia U. Plus I actually find the 4S uncomfortable to hold, the sharp edges aren't the best..

a BIG trophy to Iphone 4(s). (absolute best size....not to small and not big......lays perfect in your hand.....and still big enough to enjoying movies).

Plank Sony designs are way better than the boring square shape of iPhone. Seriously iPhone is boring screen too small aswell. Whatever turns you on but Sony and Ericsson before them were always unigue in design. Arc S is not big.

Posted by adsada
here bono, want an Xperia S?

Posted by plankgatan
i thought Sony S looked AMAZING (when i first saw it on the internet)...........BUT after i hold it (for real).....man, did i got disappointed.

the design feels cheap & very plastic. the screen is not as good & responsive as for example iphone.

never in my lifetime i buy a Sony S..........(no offend to all Sony lovers )

I would but I actually can't afford it right now. Why are you selling??

Posted by adsada
I don't really want to upgrade from my arc just yet (as hard as it is to say no to the beautiful phone) If no one here wants it, i'll probably stick it on ebay for about £400, though I'm guessing ebay and paypal will steal a lot of the money

It feels like solid plastic That word solid is in your message total ignored.
I'm proud in the build quality from Sony Xperia S it feels good and i drop the phone at least 10 times from 2 meters without any cracks or dents you will get in aluminum housing , no offend

Xperia S is top notch. iPhone is nice - no doubt - but it's just not the same league anymore.
Small screen, boring design and childish UI.
Onscreen keyboard on X S works much better than in the iPhone.
My opinion, but it's so obvious for me.
As for build quality, iPhone is just sh..t - it cracks like a glass.

I love the phone. Waiting for .73 upgrade.

BUT, I still didn't sell my Arc. It's too hard! I just love it it was perfect companion for a year!

Ditto on point 1, need that battery fix .

I've also still got my Arc, tucked away in my drawer. I normally sell my old phones on Ebay, but something is making me keep the Arc for the time being (and it's not just that it will get ICS before my X S ).

I actually did not expect that. Considering the HTC is supposed to have more powerful internals and all...

And ICS.

Doministry,

As a long time member such as myself, I value your experience and opinion - bar none - and I say that with VERY few members here!

However, I don't agree with the iPhone.
"Childish UI" ... this is an ICON based UI - the very SAME ICON based UI used in:
Blackberry,
iPhone,
Android,
SE Java UI,
and just about EVERY Phone, smartphone ever made.
So I must conclude "Childish UI" is a 'lame' claim to defame iPhone. The icons in ALL iPhone apps hold better GUI "clarity" if you will than every other phone. Take a GOOD look at the iPhone icons viewed from full screenshots compared to the various screen resolution full Resolution. Approval for apps are done by a team that actually look at the icons through, the same eye-piece classical watch makers use.

Boring design. Everyone has their opinion, mine ... iPhone very economical (my soul is happy the majority of parts are highly recyclable & don't damage the earth we live off of; no I'm no hippy). Aluminum chassis is VERY sturdy and the 4S eliminates issues with signal strength (although I'm annoyed by slower acclamation of getting signal once lost; its slower).

"Onscreen keyboard on X S works much better than in the iPhone"
Hmm. I must ask ... how long have you used an iPhone 4/4S on-screen keyboard for? Have you first hand examples for those writing in traditional cantonese/mandarin or Japanese?! (writing in Glyphs) Don't say this may to be important as there is almost 2.5 Billion users in this market and WILL matter to ANY platforms success.

ALthough I'm very worried about iPhone's front and back glass - its the same as all Android phones currently - I've yet to break the glass on my iPhone 4 and now my iPhone 4S; we're not the careless typical users who's parents pay for our phones . lol.

Again I value YOUR opinion and I have tried the Xperia Arc's keyboard but its not as responsive as even a iPhone 3GS; great phone though.

That all said I'm STILL looking forward to trying ICS on Xperia ION and "S" models!

@Prom1

I hate to drift off topic, but a few things need to be mentioned

iPhone's do have an extremely childish UI, colourful little squares for people to press. Very basic and it's not the same as the icons found in Android, which are just more better looking and more 'mature'. Plus they can be customised with widgets and stuff...

Secondly, Apple and good for the environment? Ha don't make me laugh just take a look at the packaging the iPhone comes with to see how much Apple care. SE have actually done far more in this respect with the GreenHeart features.

While in the past I would have agreed that the iPhone keyboard is very very good, after trying out the one on the Xperia S I would say that this one is on par with the iPhone's one. It has come a long way but it was responsive and corrected errors well. Although I would say Android beats iPhone in this regard too, as Android users can choose different keyboards to what suits them. I use swype which means for extremely fast typing. On iOS you're stuck with Apples stock keyboard, so its worse then others because you have less choice.

I don't think worrying about the iPhone smashing is in the same league to Android phones, either. The amount of people I know who have had to get their 4/4S repaired because of smashing the glass just from a little drop is crazy. It's a stupid design, lets me honest here.

Just my opinion, and I think we should get back on topic now

So, anyone know when the .73 update is available - assume it's only for certain locations at the moment?

Also, I have a few fingerprints on the screen, but does anyone know if the screen/screen protector was coated with the anti-fingerprint chemical like the SGSII and iPhone?

Posted by NightBlade
iOS does have a very "childish" GUI, although this perception is probably just due to the outdated graphic style.

I mean, all those bright and colourful buttons and exorbitant glossiness everywhere is not in line with modern graphics themes (it was 5 years ago). Nowadays it's all about (semi-) matte textures, minimalistic colour palettes, subtle gradients, minimal gloss and quasi-realistic 3D objects (e.g. for icons). ICS is a perfect example of those features and WP7 is an extreme. Here's a comparison:

In short, they sort of need to update their GUI.

Additionally, they also need to update their UI. It takes a bit longer to access information on iOS than, say Android (due to lack of widgets, simpler lockscreen, simpler menu categorization, etc.)

Here in Sweden the roll out started like a couple of days ago. However only for those having a branded phone from operator Tre. The rest are still waiting.

Thanks for your nice words!

As you see before I answered some users already replied.

Anyway, as for iPhone's boring design it's just my opinion. However I would be mad to be forced to buy the same phone's design for 5 or 6 years. And use this tiny screen without any size choice.

As for the childish UI - well, all those bubbles, textures and buttons look like very old fashioned and like made for kids.
It was a revolution in 2007 but world has moved forward.
New Android or WP7 look more enorgomic and pure.
And lack of any homescreen functionality is also a massive drawback.

I don't know about the keyboard, but maybe we talk about beeing used to something than?
I have Arc, S and than tried to type something on iPhone and it was torture for me.

IOS is sooooo bland, boring and too restrictive. Customisation is not much

Posted by adsada
That is the quality of Android, it can constantly change to keep up with design trends. Apple are going to have a real problem in the next couple of years...its gonna be great!

But in all fairness Bono, it's designed like that so anyone can pick it up and use it - that's why is so popular with all ages.

IMHO Android is better, as you stated you have more freedom, but both are like chalk and cheese and are aimed completely differently.

Posted by Bonovox
I prefer Windows myself but I still find it better than IOS personally

Windows is great but so limited.

Yeah bono you can't really say iOS is crap because its restrictive and has a lack of customisation, then say you're a fan of WP7

Hey at least you can change the colour of the icons!

(and choose from a wide variety of background colours, including black and white)

Are there any custom roms for the S? A good custom rom might solve the problem of battery life which some people complain about.

Version .73 of the software seems to already have solved that. No need for custom ROM for that alone.

It's an illusion.
After one day head to head the difference is immense.

Arc was not a crap either, right? But the difference is in the workflow. Big difference.

what did you do with the XS for 30mins?

Did you try Web Browsing?
Did you try Playing HD Games? like Shadowrun, Modern Combat 3, GTA III
Did you try the Fast Capture of the Camera and 1080p Video Recording Quality?
Did you try Looking Really Closely to the Screen? and see the Difference of HD screen vs Non HD Screen
Did you try Watching Video with 1280x720 HD? resolution
Did you try Shutting it down and Starting it up?
Did you try the Fast Charging Capability and how was it?
How about the Anti Stain Shell?

I bet in that 30mins you just looked at Xperia S Built and Design, Screen, Camera, Led Strip etc, and took a quick tour in Settings, Homescreen, App Drawer and some Widgets and maybe tried some installed apps.

30mins actually is not enough to do all of those things I listed above and I am wondering how you came up with a conclusion of "it hardly feels much different from Arc S imo" but IMO you haven't tried those Obvious Things that are Massive improvement over the Arc/ArcS.

Maybe on the Software side it's almost the same, but hey, 4.0.3 is also coming to Xperia S and it will be better than Arc/ArcS because of Dual-core and RAM

For this you seem to need the charger EP850 from what I have read. The one that comes with XS on most markets is EP800, which does not deliver enough current to be able to fast charge. Fast charge does not work with PC USB since it does not give enough current for this.
