Sony Xperia S thread

Can't believe CNET call the S, plasticky, again, written by an iSheep. Just like the Engadget one where the reviewer was claiming that the iPhone 4 camera was better than the S, when clearly the samples posted showed the the S was leaps and bounds ahead of the iPhone 4 camera.

Posted by NightBlade
Right, they called the widgets and timescape ugly, the design non-ergonomic and the build plasticky and cheap.

And apparently Sense is better than UXP. Right.

Posted by rickster2kuk
They also moaned that the Xperia S was too heavy at 144g compared to the iPhone4S, I think you will find the iPhone 4S is actually heavier than it's quoted weight of 140g.

The short version. With USB mass storage you can manage any kind of file you want. With MTP you are limited to just media files.

Great phone

bad thing: it has only MTP mode, no USB mass storage.
...and good: modding started

Battery is ok, almost like in Arc

WAIT, WHAT? What do You mean no USB mass storage? Isn't every android made to work as USB mass storage? Besides what does MTP mean? What kind of files can You transfer to and off the phone?

Yes I would also like to know, does this mean on the XS you cannot simply plug the phone into the computer and it opens windows explorer just like a memory stick would?

It actually does open the windows explorer just like with memory stick.
However you can't see pictures thumbnails.

On memory card yes, identical as before.

But as I said you don't see pictures thumbnails.
However Windows 7 gives you one click pics & videos import.

BTW I feel battery life became better and more stable.
1% in the night, 7,5 hours, flight mode.

Yep you should be ok, all you will be doing is debranding your phone

S is such a looker, but those buttons bother me a lot. Also as a current Neo 8mpix user, I want to switch to something that will last me for 2 years and with a good camera. Those 12mpix samples worry me a lot. Still so much chroma noise and oversharpening. Tough decisions.

Buttons are totally OK.
As for photos - I think they're very good.
The detail is great and colours too.

Does MAC recognize FAT32 file systems at all (think that's what is used for the 32 GB disc) ?

Posted by doministry
Well Mac is another story, just use the app for the Mac.
On Windows works ok.

Chroma noise can easily be removed via 3rd party photo editors, personally I use Lightroom.

I'm with you on the oversharpening though, all SE/Sony phones seem to do that (except a few of them, like the C901, this one has the best post-processing you can get in a phone, why didn't SE/Sony stick with that?!).
I hope they will improve this shitty post-processing with the ICS update.

After full two weeks with Xperia S I repeat that it's a brilliant phone.
Really the battery life improved a lot. Today I made some sunny shots for the first time and they are great.

But there are issues, hopefully will be corrected soon.
1. Camera has some problems with Night Mode! It's quite hard to make a sharp, not blurry night photo!
It's like a lottery, I don't know what really influences that but I can make one amazing photo and than the next one will be a little blurry or rather - moved slightly.

Also, in the night mode after looking at the pictures in camera mode, when I come back to shooting photos, the screen stays BLACK, not showing the picture actually! The picture appears again after changing the mode.

2. Email application. The app itself works great, has nice pich-to-zoom etc. however it has one totally idiotic limitation:
it always saves 25 emails per account! So even if in one session I download 100 emails, at the next one the phone ERASES everything beyond 2 emails! And of course forcing me to download it again each time! This is totally unprofessional and idiotic. What an idiot designed this?
Other than that, great.

But I always wonder, why those manufacturers have to f..ck something up on the way?
Do we always have to live in beta reality?! Pis..es me of completely.

Mac OS X can handle FAT32 (read & write) .. but NTFS it can only read natively - there are add-ins that can allow write access. If you have Parallels's or VMWare Fusion (above 4 & 2 respectively) then writing to either works as that OS knows the varying permissions for both NTFS (local & domain - connected/disconnected) vs OSX (unix based permissions).

back on topic.

@marcink,

I'd say keep your hard-earned spinach (green = cash). While you're waiting the market price will drop slightly along with new firmwares to improve overall phone performance (pics included). You'll be VERY happy in 30days or more when you purchase then.

@Doministry,

Email Application. I believe - the ActiveSync one - allows you in settings to increase the amount of emails it'll download. See if 25/50/100 is an option ... if you're using GMAIL's IMAP ... then that maybe a setting to change online with your gmail account; but I cannot be certain on the latter. Play around with the settings ... maybe setting up GMAIL as ActiveSync (server: m.google.com) like I do with my IP4S will give you what your after.

As a comparison: I'm on iOS5.1 and I STILL do not have the ability to set OUT-OF-OFFICE notifications from my iPhone; yet the Galaxy Nexus, Galaxy S II (all iterations), and Moto Droid RAZR can do this out of the box!! Aarrrgh!! i support mobile devices and I had a day off last week ... trust me you get slammed when users don't get the OOO auto reply.

But I don't use Gmail at all. And I don't use ActiveSync either, I just a different provider, payed one.
And this issue was nonexistent on my Arc as well as X10 Mini!

Damn ... Not sure how to help.
Still check the settings within the mail app just to be certain you haven't missed a hidden section/setting.

Posted by marcink
Doministry, show us/me those great photos. What I can see so far is just same old same old in terms of noise and sharpening. C905 was much better then this so called exmor-r. Don't want to pay for megapixels when they don't make any difference. That's the reason I want to get rid of my 8mpix neo. I just feel no investment in camera has been made for the past 3-4 years and we will have to wait for 2013/real Sony influence/lineup to see any difference.

ive no idea about fat32 but just for the benefit of other mac users they have to use software to move files

With MTP you can't see files timestamp, and generally it's slower than USB storage mode in my opinion. I'm not very happy with all this MTP and no choice...

Anyone's observed low in-call volume ? My is tooo low compared to Xperia Arc. I've to push the phone into the ear

@doministry, nice shots

Posted by doministry
Thanks. Shots are really nice indeed.

I think I exaggerated a bit. Actually night mode is able to produce very nice shots, just the hand has to be very stable to do it.

And I take back everything I said about K-9 mail. Seems like a great app.

Posted by Ricke77
That nightshot looks great! Not so much noise! Please remember that its a phone and not a SLR!

Posted by doministry
Yep that's right!
As I said, in some situations Xperia is able to provide great night shots.
It's a matter of settings too..

Do the older Xperias use the same camera sensor as Xperia S? And if so, is there any chance Sony to improve their cameras with the ICS upgrade?

Posted by rickster2kuk
I've had the phone now for almost a week and the following three things really stand out to me;

1. The screen is immense, it's so vivid and the extra resolution really gives you lots more screen real estate;
2. The phone is so fast, not even experienced any lag at all, even when booting up or coming out of flight mode, everything is silky slick.
3. Build quality and design are top notch, it may not be aluminium but this thing just feels like a premium product.

The first two were a worth upgrade from the Arc in itself.

Camera has also impressed me, despite my reservations from the pre-release samples. The contrast definitely seems better.

Just can't wait for ICS, it's going to make this phone even more fantastic.

Only downside I would say so far is the battery and the software bugs, but these can be corrected by upcoming firmware updates. Also would have been nicer to have a slightly slimmer and lighter phone - but hey ho, you can't have everything !

Wasn't that said about the arc when it was released after X10? My arc lags a bit sometimes and lack of internal storage is killing me, but I'd wait for the Xperia S for a while until I'm sure it doesn't turn out like Arc and starts lagging a few months later!

I don't think so....

I'm curious to know if anyone is able to compare the camera in the Xperia S vs. the camera in Sonys Bloggie products. I've always been under the impression that the Bloggies had better quality cameras than their phones, so a comparison would be quite nice. The reason being the Bloggie products are almost as thin as the phones, so if they are in fact better then presumably their camera tech could be ported over to phones without much difficulty... that is, if they are better

Posted by dominiquelan
I love the white model. This phone has solid features, and is available at a great price. I don't think I could find something similar to this in the same price range. I just wish it came in ICS already.

Bloggie records better video but Xperia S and other smartphones take better stills than Bloggie

Whenever I unplug the charger I get a notification telling me to unplug the charger from the wall as well in order to save power. Can I turn this notification/icon off?

Initially I was more inclined to choose white as I have with my previous X10 and current Arc S, but after holding both white and black Xperia S in my hand, I have to say the black one looks sexy as hell! And of course with its unibody it has no reason to not feel as solid as it is. Very tempting indeed, it would definitely turn heads but to ward off such temptation I promptly got myself a 64GB MicroSDXC so that at least I have the edge of having more disk space than Xperia S. Talk about sour grapes!

I just ordered a white xperia s...should be receiving it in a few days...im very excited....

Posted by rikken
And I got my black one yesterday So far so good. Great UI, camera, screen, and the sound of the musicplayer is far better then on my S2 The capasitive buttons are a little hit and miss but I guess it is a matter of getting used too. Have not fully tested batterylife, takes a few charges and a couple of weeks usage I assume to get the full picture

Xperia S appears to have Bluetooth 2.0 only while other phones such Nexus S or Galaxy SII LTE has 3.0 and HTC One X even has 4.0. This seems outdated. What is Xperia S missing?

battery life not too good cant last a whole day and it loses 20 percent overnight while not even doing anything

First of all it use Bluetooth 2.1 with EDR that means it's fully backward compatible with the older version.

Only 4.0 is speed and less power consumptive what i do not believe i tested in practices and very difficult to connect with older versions.

2.1 is just better in my opinion.
