You will see the notification from all sides, the strip on the bottom is transparent. It is basically a piece of glass (of course not real glass) that is inserted between the two parts of the phone and illuminated from inside.

And regarding the issue with missing the buttons: it still happens after having used the phone for quite some time... it really is somewhat against any intuition to touch ABOVE the actual icons...

So you have to touch above the icons on the transparent bar and not at them ?
That most certanly sound contra productive.

+1

seems stupid

Posted by moogoo
i don't think it's that stupid...with physical buttons the labels are above or below the actual buttons. this is the same thing.

however, i think they should have just printed the icons over the buttons, leaving the led bar completely clear...would have been one detail that would have made a huge difference i think

Posted by SKIBBE
yeah but they are elevated and you can "feel" and see. but i guess is a learning thing as it was with the switched button layout on the x10 vs Arc, took me a week than it was like i never used the x10 layout

Posted by adsada
maybe posting this here is more relevant

what do you think? had to edit the wallpaper from a press shot of the s

Posted by moogoo
@adsada ha.. nice.

i'm still waiting for Bonovox to share how to enter a competition to win one of these bad boys....perhaps Bonovox is trying to improve his odds by keeping us from entering?

It is funny to see pretty much on every video how people desperately tries to touch the transparent bar and nothing happens.

Also just realized there seem to be small dots right above each icon indicating where to press (hard to see on most videos).

Xperia S! You wanted to see the new fast capture camera in action and see how the video and photos taken with it look. Watch !!!!!!!!!

But again it looks like the last Xperia models with poor image quality. The camera shutter time on the other older Xperia phones is fast so its not the processor its cos the images are so heavily scaled down compressed and of small size. Have you not seen them poor images?? Great phone nice specs but i fear another poor camera again.

Posted by Vipera ammodytes
Yes, really poor photos by Sony, they cant make proper camera since K800...(c901 was good)

Posted by Bonovox
I know its not final retail yet but them images i posted previously are awful. I hope they fine tune it.

Posted by Arne Anka
Checkout these photos taken by ION instead (its basically same phone as S anyway). They look much better (a Panasonic Lumix FZ40 is used for comparison).

Good quality

So why does Europe get shitty version??

Both Ion and S have same camera module. The only reason Ion pics seem better could be that the phone was a more recent prototype and the S an older prototype. You have to remember these are all prototypes and the final product will have improved PQ over these.

Posted by moogoo
yea .. not concerned about image quality until there are final versions to test and side by sides under standard test conditions. it simply varies too much with firmware version, test conditions, and photographer to make any real comparison now. though the phonearena test with the ion is decent. they look pretty good to me. at least, as good as i would expect from a phone camera

Posted by Bonovox
And how far away is launch?? If soon they ain't got long to get it right. But them first images shown had alot of noise much like the Satio 12 meg camera did. Oh i am so positive me

Well to be frank the camera performance is pretty good. Phonearena sample pics show that camera can hold its own against even dedicated point and shoots. The final retail models will have the best camera on an Android device yet.

Did anyone noticed that the camera interface has manual ISO control?

Posted by moogoo
didn't notice, but that sounds great to me!

I love how people criticize images at 100% size. how many people print their camera phone photos at 100% size? even dedicated point and shoots have noise at 100% size and they don't have half the capabilities of a smartphone.

I just don't understand.. but i guess it just comes with the territory. no one is ever happy and there's always someone to criticize and complain about

I bet if the Xperia S made espresso and printed legal currency, people would complain the espresso wasn't very good and the money "didn't feel right" .

Now I have had chance to see them shots on my pc not my phone. I am not exactly blown away. Looking at them full size & with it being very bright indoor lighting there is still alot of noise & I see the N8 is better than these imo

What bothers me is that this year HTC's flagship may surpass S in photo quality. Sony's pursuit for industry smallest photocells and (probably) SE lack of investments in camera drivers in recent years make these exmor-R matrices almost useless:(

HTC flagship will have 16mpx, according to Eldar

Posted by Bonovox
Yes it will be,but as we all know more mega pixels means nothing. But we shall see cos from what I seen the sample shots from the HTC model are very good apart from a slight left hand side blur. But lets keep to topic here

This, and the fact you can call the camera by long pressing the camera button while the phone is locked, are two of the things I like most so far.

STOP COMPLAINING GUYS SERIOUSLY GROW-UP .. SO MUCH NEGATIVE TALK ..

IF YOU DON'T LIKE XPERIA S DON'T BUY THIS BLOODY PHONE..

BUT PLEASE STOP BASHING /SONY don't keep-on repeating the same bad comment again and again ..

If you hate SONY / dont buy them Buy apple,Samsung etc etc and Be happy .. But stop this nonsense.

WE LOVE SONY/ ITS IN OUR DNA.

peace out..

Posted by Bonovox
I love the phone mate I am just pointing out what may be another crap camera but the phone is great. I have had many Xperia phones & liked one or two.

Posted by smclion102
^^^
You my friend have every Xperia and Hate them all..
sony makes the best camera optics but there is something wrong not sure if its hardware or software[ARC vs iPhone4s].Give them some time..

SONY is not rich any more they are bleeding thats y they are compromising in lot of stuff give them some time they will surely raise again [every dog has his day]

Posted by Bonovox
Actually, not true I loved the Play,Ray & Mini Pro!! Just normal me I never keep them long enough. The Ray had the best camera of the current crop of Xperia phones but the phone is way too buggy even now. Fortunes have turned around cos many years ago Samsung was the budget brand now they are bigger than Sony not just in mobiles either.

Xperia S is not Sony's 2012 flagship. So there are still chances in that respect

Posted by moogoo
wait whatttttt...?!?!?!? IT'S NOT!? are you saying we should expect a flagship at MWC?!?!?

Wooot this is big!!

There's a small whole on the back next to the speaker in the back. Noise cancelling mic?

Posted by Bonovox
You guys getting excited over ISO control?? Damn other manufacturers been doing that for years on phones.

Posted by doministry
Lol what a f..cking whining over camera.
Bonovox, you start to be really annoying.
What "another" crappy camera? Stop this whining bull..hit here.

You can be sure or rather Sony will do their best in camera department
and make Xperia S really great.
Arc is amazing, so why S not?
It will be even better.

Those phones are not having final software. C'mon.

Relax will you i already said i like the phone but just the camera was not looking that amazing. I might be proved wrong either way who cares. I actually prefer the Ion design to this one. Don't get so stressed its just a mobile and my point of view.

Posted by goldenface
That liquipel technology looks great - I wonder how much it is.

Quite positive impressions from a lot of the tech site reviewers. The strip, which is also the antenna, takes a little getting used to, as will the buttons, but it makes the phone, especially the white version, stand out from the crowd - a lot.

I'll be picking one of these up for sure.

Got it off twitter, so dunno, whether it's still possible to enter, if so: good luck!

I have just done so.

Oh, and more info about the Smart Tags.

Sony Ericsson

Don't forget to watch the video...

Those tags are nice, but hell are they overpriced... you can get NFC tags for 1 Euro that do exactly the same.

Posted by goldenface
How much are they? I didn't see a price.
