1) Xperia Ion and the Xperia S are 2 different phones?

There are minor differences, yes.

Yes.

On 2012-01-11 07:05:32, Big_D wrote:

Yes, but not by much (10.8 mm vs 10.6). It is slighty taller and wider as well (133x68x10.8 vs 128x64x10.6).

On 2012-01-11 07:05:32, Big_D wrote:
- Ion is 4G LTE, S is unknown. nowhere did it says S is 4G.

S does not support LTE.

On 2012-01-11 07:05:32, Big_D wrote:

It appears so. However on the Xperia S the soft touch buttons are located at the clear bar, not above. The clear bar also functions as notification LED if I have not misunderstood it.

On 2012-01-11 07:05:32, Big_D wrote:
- Memory card slot: Ion says microSD, up to 32GB, which means it's removable, S says 32GB eMMC, is that removable? I need confirmation.

S : 32 GB non-removable eMMC and no microSD.
ION: 16 GB non-removable eMMC + microSD supporting sizes up to 32 GB.

On 2012-01-11 07:05:32, Big_D wrote:
3) Is the battery removable? rumors says that the Xperia S isn't.

Neither one has removable battery.

On 2012-01-11 07:05:32, Big_D wrote:
I hope it uses the same battery as the Xperia x10 and Xperia PLAY, cuz I have BST-41 and hope to get the best out of them once I switch to a new phone.

Both use bigger batteries (S=1750 and ION=1900) and hence are not compatible with BST-41 anyway.

@Big D,

T-Mobile USA uses "4G" being HSPA ... they don't own LTE license do they? Either way the bands for HSPA on T-Mobile USA is different than AT&T's so you're better off getting the Xperia S.

despite the LTE, would the Ion 4G be used when on the T-mobile USA network, or revert back to 3G?

btw, what is the T-Mobile USA network 4G bands?

The T-Mobile 3G/4G bands in the US are 1700/1900MHz. T-Mobile uses HSDP+. They do not have LTE 4G.

Because the Ion will be AT&T exclusive there is no way to de-brand it to get rid of all the useless AT&T crap on the phone. Not just that but AT&T take to much time to update the software on the phones.

When I got my X10 it was very simple to de-brand it because it was a global phone.

The only option to get rid of the AT&T crap would be to flash an XDA rom or CyanogenMod and to lose most of the Sony customization.

Dose anyone else know if there are any other option?

Some very interesting details regarding the ION.

PhoneArena sample photos and videos from the Xperia Ion camera, also a comparison with a Panasonic point and shoot. They and the readers seem mighty impressed with the camera performance

So I wouldn't get any 4G speed? stuck with 3G if I use the phone on T-mobile USA?

Posted by moogoo
bigD.. that's right.. no 4G for you... besides, the ion has non-removable battery.. i thought you weren't interested in any phone with embedded battery?

No, you'll have 2G. The ion doesn't support 1700 for HSPA, and T-Mobile doesn't use 1900 for HSPA. Once T-Mobile's roaming agreement with AT&T for 850/1900 HSPA is active, however, you will then have access to HSPA on "T-Mobile".

They had to move it all the way to the top of the phone so the stupid AT&T logo would fit on the top.
On the XPERIA S the speaker is clearly visible by the SONY logo.

Hey! is this removable or non-removable battery?

Posted by Arne Anka
Its non removable.

Posted by DACHA
It looks like that the ION and XPERIA S will have better viewing angles than last year XPERIA phones

Posted by DACHA
The XPERIA ION can be preordered for $569.50 unlocked.

Not expensive for an LTE phone with a large screen.

Wow great news. Sony confirmed in MWC 2012 that the Xperia ion will be launching outside the United States at some point during 2012..

Wonder what "Some point" means. I want this one.

3 buttons or 4 like AT&T model?

Posted by Arne Anka
Don't know. Sony only mentioned the international release time of ION at MWC. They did not mention anything about the button configuration so I assume it is same as for AT&T.

Posted by Supa_Fly
Man this is taking too long to be available in retail stores. I know its not supposed to ship yet but Sony should give us more details over this not just to ignore it.

Posted by Arne Anka
Aren't AT&T already selling it (I thought they were suppsoed to sell it by now) ?

Q2 2012 begins in April, so we're still a month away.

Posted by Supa_Fly
Is there no recent news of this Ion device?
Nothing on a date for the global version to ship, or just continue holding out on hope?

Am I the only one looking forward to this device.

another big failure by Sony. The HTC One X just got announced by ATT for May 6th and there is still no word on the ION.

That is exactly what I wrote. The Ion got announced in February and it is still not available for AT&T while the HTC One X will be on sale in a few days. By the way I am an ATT costumer.
Now there are rumors that the Ion is not coming to AT&T at all, but instead AT&T will get the Hayabusa in Q3.

Dacha, that is NOT what you wrote - not even by inference - see the quote above.

Yes we know its exclusive to AT&T ... things change ... and to be honest I'd rather a slight change: 3 buttons vs 4, and a smooth & flush 3.5mm jack.

Still I'd like to see this really do well spec and most importantly performance wise. I honestly don't think the majority of global Android users give Sony good credit; ICS looks very similar to what SE has been doing all along to Android.

Just received my ION from en ebay seller shipped to France.

First thing I checked were the bands/networks and IT HAS GOT LTE

Check the screenshot
screenshot 2012 06 19 2059

In the box: well quite empty with only the fast charger, no smart tags and no hdmi cable.
The phone has a premium feel due to the metal back, I find it less "angular" than the Xperia S, so more hand friendly.
More to come as I spend some time with it.

Congrats Looking forward to hearing more about it

I have had my ION for over a week mine had the same LTE setting but i am now running pre release ICS OFFICIAL SONY ROM thanks to my friend who has EMMA and LTE is no longer there

Posted by sambouka
Do you think it is a software thing?
I mean on the retail box it is written : LT28i LTE ...
No LTE in France to test!

Posted by sambouka
Ion has a premium feel compared to my more plasticky Xperia S
On the software side seems like the Gingerbread version is a real old one...
Not present are:
- 3D Album app
- 3D camera app
- stopwatch
- timer
- world clock
- themes do not include live wallpapers, "cosmic flow" static images

The screen colors are more saturated than those of xperia S

Here are some comparison shots at maximum brightness (which is on par with the S)

Um, that would seem odd. If I'm not mistaken or if GSMArena's data is not mistaken, the Xperia Ion should support ALL 3 LTE bands (700/1700/2100Mhz) and thus should be capable of the full data speeds supported by the network, no? Also the "H" version you speak of (nothing exists in LTE called "H") most likely refers to the Dual-Band HSPA+; as mentioned by the 42Mbps data speeds.

Man I feel old: I recall using an T39m with 52Kbps data speeds (that's Kilobits) and thinking THAT was fast - 16greyscale screen.

Can anyone confirm the official Android 4 release for Ion date, and what new "REAL" world features it'll bring?
