I've had a Sony Satio for a while & love the camera. I cant believe all the latest phones only have 8mega pixels. Where are the 16 mps ?? (with real flash & video light)

You (and everybody else) probably don't need the extra pixels. It is possible cheaper to develop a better "low" resolution sensor than adding more pixels and deal with the noise coming with it. I do think we will see slightly higher camera resolutions in the future, but as we have seen with dedicated still cameras, the megapixel race is over for now. It has stopped at 14 MP.

So TURE!!! something like 98.5% of cell phone users have NEVER printed a picture from their phone and 5 or 8mp is way good enough for an 8x10 print or in some cases 11x14.... Its just not necessary.

exactly, Its (imo) more logical that well see better CMOS sensors with higher IQ and better low light/long exposure abilities before the big cell phone makers start chasing anything beyond 12mp.... if ever... again, its just not necessary.

Actually some still cameras are at the 24mp+ range and some medium format cameras are more than 50mp.... but this is for a professional application where higher resolution is necessary... I'd actually be VERY VERY surprised if we don't see Light field technology or 3D capture in cell phones before we even get close to 16mp.

What @skblakee said, there's a good reason why even point&shoot compact digicams like the Canon Ixus 115 can take much better shots (specially in low light) than any phone camera - it all boils down to the sensors.

To be quite honest it does freez up alot but the camera is awesome and i have put it on a computer i have even printed the phonto's and they are great no problems with the camera, i think it is a great phone the only problem is it freezing up and that only happens when i charge the phone for too long!

IMO even my 12mp N8 (as much as I love it) is also overkill.... I really think that phones should stop somewhere around 5 or 8mp and concentrate on longer battery life, better optics more manual control or somthing else Im not even thinking of. ... ... ... but thats just me, I guess. Heck, if I want really sharp pictures Ill use my DSLR.

Anyway, yes, even the N8 is theoretically better off with a 10 or 8 MP sensor!!
This MP race is the worst marketing race the tech industry has went in imo!!
It really reflects how much the average Joe suffers at laziness and ignorance!!
And as a simple example to back up the above argument without digging into the technical stuff, all the high-end compacts released in 2010 the same year the N8 was released in all featured 10 MP sensors:
Canon G12, Panasonic LX-5, Canon S95, Nikon P7000.. These were the top four with the S95 being the best seller by far..
Sensor were between within the 1/1.7" to 1/1.6" range..
We already have 3D capture on smartphones btw: HTC Evo 3D, and the first to feature 3D: LG Optimus 3D.. Both are as pointless as 3D itself and low quality as well!
About light field though, as much as I hate to admit it, but I think this will revolutionize the imaging industry the same the iPhone revolutionized the smartphone industry, or even more!!
It's still too young though at the moment..
The thing making me reject this tech altogether is none but the: Shoot first, focus later!!
I'm afraid though we will have to accept it as the new tech eventually the same we had to accept the iPhone!

Yes.. Salesmen!! I never lose hope in them though.. Each time I go in a store, I look forward to have a nice chat with a well informed salesman.. Till now though, I've been let down by every single occasion!
Especially when it comes to smartphones and digital cameras, even DSLRs where you expect them to know at least some basic stuff!

Jessops store near me they are all professional and well trained product knowledge is the key. All most shops are bothered about is the sale. Kodak,Olympus and Sony have now all said their digital cameras sales have slumped due to mobile cameras

I love my Satio. I hate the OS on it. I have been waiting for an Android phone with a better camera though as I do use the camera all the time. I even call my phone a camera with phone features.
While I agree most don't need high pixel camera's (I use my pics as wallpapers on my 50" plasma and my 106" projector) the advantage I find is I can take a pic and crop it to what I want safely rather than use the digital zoom.
So I will prob be in line when the first crop of the Titan II or Sony offerings come out.

Must say i do miss the days when Phone Cameras were a main focus, the days of N93 vs. W900 (video rec.), N73 vs. K800, N95/N82 vs. K850/C902 vs. ZN5, C905 vs. N86 8MP vs. Pixxon vs. that LG (forgot its name) etc...
I wish they could bring back the Xenon flash, i remember using my K850 took take great nite pics with its modded cam drivers, i can hardly achieve the same quality with my GS2 although its camera is great for daylight pics and vids.
