Not a bad bump up but no physical changes really apart from the new colour.

So is this purely a software upgrade as it is still using the same processor is it not?

Posted by HxH
MSM8255T 1.4Ghz compare to MSM8255 1 Ghz from original

such a not worthy upgrade IMO! I don't know why keep doing this to relatively-old customers (back-stabbed) them.

No not the same processor the normal arc is 1Ghz but this is mostly a software upgrade.

I wonder if the the normal arc will get this software upgrade?

Posted by HxH
In iPhone 3G[S] mean "Speed"
In Galaxy S mean "Smart"
In HTC Wildfire S / Desire S "?"
In Arc S "......"

waiting for you to define it meaning?

Yes. http://www.esato.com/news/article.php/id=2068

Now that's fail. Only upgrade over ARC is the overclocked CPU. Is this really worth it? -_-

I guess they will stop making ARC now...

For goodness sake why could actually release a NEW device with all these new features rehashing the Arc will just confuse many for a start off

I agree.....what are Sony Ericsson playing at here.

Posted by >500
They could have just made it like this in the first place...

Anywho, people 300 people complain about the dual core missing, well, I dont see it as a problem! (yes, ive used galaxy s II etc)

Despite what some think, there are still limited apps suited for dual core devices. And 2.3.4 better supports it, but not fully as yet afaik. ICS should cover that.

O and I dont see why it will come out in Q4. Its mainly just a cpu speed increase and software changes. Should come out very early OCtober then as its not many changes!

True no point at all.

I supposed they are extending the life of the Arc until the 2012 phones are announced.

I agree it's not the most exciting news but the jump in processor speed will still be welcome, however, wouldn't it have been great if these specs came with the original Arc when launched?

Posted by dibdin
I wonder if it will be the same kind of plastic used as with the original Arc??

Posted by Bonovox
Well,I guess they will have sorted the cracking issue

Posted by Del
Well I'm due an upgrade next month and I was undecided between the arc or gs2 but now I think I may wait and see how the arc s performs.

Posted by Bonovox
Even though it's a little slab like & large I would choose the Galaxy S 2. Especially now as the white one hit the UK today

Posted by Tsepz_GP
Looks good, but personaly i would walk right past the Arc and GS2 and get the new GS2-LTE with 4.5inch display and 1.5GHz Dual-core CPU.

Posted by Bonovox
Have not seen that one which is it?? I think though there has to be a point where displays stop getting too big. Cos they will be no longer MOBILE I think should have also bumped up the battery

I so wanted the front facing camera. I use Skype a lot. I love this phone so much. I can skip apple iPhone for this. But lack of front camera is a huge disappointment for me.

I think SE missed the boat on this one.

It's been 6 months since in the Arc came out and SE obviously want to extend the lifecycle of the Arc for another 6 months until the 2012 models are out.

Why just update the processor? Surely it would have made sense to also increase the RAM up to 768mb (min) and also increase the internal storage. But no, everything apart from the processor is stock 6 months ago.

SE are learning the error of their ways by giving us frequent software updates but they now need to keep up with competition hardware wise. The newest firmware update makes the current Arc pretty snappy so updating the processor does't achieve much (apart from a headline grabber) without upping the RAM. The underlying issues with the camera compression and internal storage still haven't been fixed.

For the current Arc user there is no incentive to get the Arc S. My only hope is the SE have got something special for 2012.

Posted by Bonovox
Indeed. Was this one a surprise or was it in the rumours??

Why only think to people wanting to upgrade?
For the one not having the Arc (or any SE by the way), wouldn't this be considered a better competitor than the original Arc?

Posted by adsada
Don't know if it's such a bad move, while the 2012 lineup will be good (I presume!) this way they will use arc components to produce a phone which they can sell for the price of the arc one when it first came out, thus making more money of the phone then continuing the original arc one, which price would continue to decrease and obviously profit margins fall.

Or it could be that they did not have enough of the original chip sets (due to Japan earthquake) and thought it would be a good time to use a faster part (similar to the neo v though they made it worse their)

This one: http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_galaxy_s_ii_lte-4124.php

Probably the best smartphone around ATM.

Posted by mode
What? With a simple overclocking excercise they could've announced it and got it out tomorrow while it is still almost acceptable for a premium android to have single core. Q4 in SE lingo means end of December. They'll drop out of the radar next year at the rate they're going.

I thought you hated Samsung??

Posted by Tsepz_GP
Wasnt their biggest fan, but since the OmniaHD they have grown on me, that GS2-LTE has made me a big fan lol, but if an SE with the same specs was around i'd pick the SE any day, unfortunetly there isnt, and i think once Ice Cream Sandwich is released the Dual-core SAMSUNGs are going to be a big problem not only for Apple, but fellow android manufacturers.

Posted by rickster2kuk
Just wait until you get the Samsung in your hands, it'll feel massive compared to the Arc.

Posted by Tsepz_GP
Ive held the normal GS2 and i was fine with it loved the size and huge display, 4.5inch seems will be the sweet spot for me as the 4.3 gave me the feeling that if it was a bit bigger it would be perfect.

You are right there, if we directly compute it.

but i Doubt if Arc S will get that Full 40% Performance in real life performance Just like those Dual cores

Can someone explain me how do the new folders in the 2.3.4 update work? Because I watched at least one million reviews on YouTube from IFA 2011, where all the Xperias run on 2.3.4, but not a single of all these idiots, sorry reviewers, has noticed the new "Media" folder on the desktop, hence no one opens it and no one plays with it. Instead of that, they still try to convince us that the "Arc" is named so because of its curved back, as if we still don't know that! I'm shocked of their stupidity!

Xperia arc s new MEDIA folder
FF to 1:04 and there you go!

Thank you, I've somehow missed that one, but I'm actually interested to see whether SE have removed the ability to set custom folder icons, which I liked a lot.

UPDATE:

UK retailer Clove has just placed the Sony Ericsson Xperia arc S for pre-order giving us an idea of the launch price and release date. It says that the first stock is expected on Monday 26 September for £349.99. Clove has both the Midnight Blue and desirable Pure White available to pre-order.

Ironically, this is a lower price than the Xperia arc is currently selling for on their site (£358.80). However, we’re sure the Xperia arc will drop in price accordingly shortly after the arc S has launched. The Xperia arc S is identical to the original in every way apart from sporting a souped-up 1.4GHz single-core processor versus the 1GHz processor in the Xperia arc.

via Xperia Blog

hmm...this does seem pretty decent, they could really shift a lot of this phone at this price, and it could be quite a big hit. Interestingly the phone has no changed from a high end to mid segment. So can we expect that the duo will be their new flagship highend which could be realised sometime this year (if this is being realised this month)? Yeah probably wishful thinking.

I think they should have come up with something new.
I still like my Arc and I won't ditch it for the Arc S.
I just overclock my Arc from currently 1.2GHz to 1.4GHz and then I'll have a better Arc S (I removed bloatware, so my Arc should be faster then).

But I like the fact that they didn't change more than the CPU, so noone can see that we have an "old" Arc.

Okay, I mad at this for first time I saw it but actually can't blame because it marketing way and I think play safe and less suffer from competitors such as HTC and Samsung.

HTC will have later model of Sensation : higher clock timing (1.2 < 1.5Ghz) but same chipset and audio driver designed by Beats team also included Beats by Dre headset as well at premium price? by Q4

Samsung also has made an announcement for S2 in American market and it got faster clock as well as bigger screen (1.2 < 1.5Ghz and 4.29 < 4.5'')

Any idea when is arc s coming to India?
