how do you turn off animations?

Hey bronxdude, it's hidden from the general public but if you want to turn off the menu animations, go to Settings, then scroll down to Developer Options. Then scroll all the way down, you'll see Window and Transition Animation Scale. You can switch them off from here. As well as limit background processes, etc...

thanks jplacson. found it now

There is a certain Wifi network, which I try to connect to, it gives the message Scanning, Connecting, Disconnected... Only this Wifi network does this, these messages are repeating without connecting to the network. What would be the problem?

Posted by jplacson
Most likely that's an issue with the Wifi router itself. Some incompatibilities with certain chipsets, etc. Restarting the router usually fixes it... but you'll have to do this often.

On that note... my ray has started acting up. It started the other day when it started getting hot in my pocket. So I disabled wifi and mobile data... still stayed hot, then battery drained really fast.

Now, it charges really slow (12 hours +) and keeps getting stuck at 30%, 55% and 85% for a long time before charging again.

Could this be a battery issue? or a phone issue?

Posted by OffLineR
@jplacson

I think that is a new app that you have installed.

Usually a restart fix this till you open the same application again.

Check if CPU is used by an app more than %50

seems like other have same problem

have it checked, dude. Go so SE glorietta, MOA, or SM North Edsa. You can also try Memoxpress Robinsons Pioneer

Posted by jplacson
Hey bronxdude, ya I'll be bringing it to the Glorietta service center soon. For now, I'm back to my old X10MP... wow, now I know how Tony Stark felt when he had to use the Mark 1 chest piece on his armor... HAHAHAHA (Geek alert)

Hi Guys

Hope you are all well (and enjoying ICS... maybe!).

Few quick quezzie about the Ray / Mobile Bravia, would someone be able to help?

Thanks for any help peeps can offer (obviously Im looking to get the Ray, primarily for watching videos on the go, if that was not obvious already lol).

Cheers,
Steve

Supports mp4, not avi, mkv, wmv etc. Codecs cannot be added, but players with wide range playing formats can, like MX or BS player.
Mobile Bravia Engine applies to all videos and pictures, but its not player, it is setting for display that enhance contrast, resulting with loosing details in bright and dark part of video/photo. Can be turned off.
Consider Wave S8500 for that purpose. Read article on GSM Arena.

Posted by jplacson
@iamsteve, the ray can play other formats beside mp4, using the right app... but sometimes it's just a waste of storage space and taxes the CPU/battery.

I usually convert vids I wanna watch on the go. My personal fav converter is the free Handbrake program for Mac/PC

Posted by iamstevie
Thanks jplacson and emporium, much appreciated! I was liking the 16:9 display ratio as well as the idea of Bravia Engine. Will have to have a proper play around with it and see I guess.

Wave is a great phone but not sure about Bada, would like to stick to Android for convenience (keep same apps etc). Really I have been holding out for a Mini Pro successor (hoping they would manage to make the next one more slimline) but looks like that aint happening

Cheers again!

@iamsteve, I came from an X10 Mini Pro, and was so excited when the Xperia Mini Pro came out. But when I actually saw the ray, I forgot all about the Mini Pro. The ray is MUCH smaller (volume-wise) and easier on the pocket. The screen size is way better. And with Swype (the built in gesture input isn't as good) I have no need for the hardware keyboard anymore. And on 4.0, Voice input is much more reliable and actually practical to use in the car.

Posted by bronxdude
my ray is now under repair.

I dropped it and the camera lens got major scratches.

Just got mine back from the service center. 1.5 weeks. Was back to my old X10 Mini Pro... wow... I got spoiled w/ 4.0 the few days that I had it before my phone died. (Main board got fried some how, thankfully still under warranty)

Xperia ray performs so much better under 4.0 ... I was able to ditch quite a few apps thanks to the new features of ICS.

Performance is improved (at least from what I've observed over GB) and battery lasts a couple of hours longer.

Posted by Bonovox
Well, that's reassuring then that it performs well. I look forward to my Xperia U ICS update then

Posted by OffLineR
I'm happy with the ICS update as well.
Once in a while it hangs.
I think another update will solve all the issues and make it perfect for Ray.

Posted by jplacson
Offline, if you go to the Settings>Developer Options... there a setting to turn on ANR dialog box, this will show you all apps that are hanging and give you the option to shut them down. You'd be surprised at how much less ICS hangs when you can shut down offending background apps (Viber and Talk hang a lot on me in the background)

its really sad, bonovox.

to add to it, the aluminum frame got scratched and dents were evident. a very small part was missing on the lower right side.

i was thinking how can it break - aluminum is a strong material

My main board got fried.

Posted by emporium
Aluminium is not strong, some alloys are, question is which one is built in, broken frame and fried board are extreme faults, what has led to it?

my broken frame was caused by dropping my phone in a pile of rocks. shoulder-level drop.

a small portion was torn in the lower left part. you can tell that something was "missing" especially if you put the back cover

How would the main board become fired or fried?? When I had the Ray it never heated up as much as Arc did

Sony and ICS. Such a great combination.

I'm guessing it was a defective part already from the beginning so it was only a matter of time.

It got REALLY hot (the frame was almost scalding hot) so I shut it off, then when I plugged in the charger, it got hot again (even with the phone off)... then when I'd turn it on, it would drain faster than it charged.

They changed the main board. "main board shorted out" was the official item on the repair sheet.

--------------

I'm so glad to have my ray back... going back to my X10 Mini Pro, made me feel like when Ironman had to use his Mark I arc reactor after his Mark II was stolen by Obadiah Stane. Hahahahaha!

yes the small screen and HVGA res is hard to live with especially browsing the web. But it's decent as a back up device. My previous Arc S used to get really hot

Is it still under waranty, if not how much did cost? In my country price of Ray dropped 35 euros in 3 monts, like no other phone, I will have record loss on this phone, like it's beeing repaired . Still trying to sell it, but selling anything goes hard those days.

Looks like already a update for ICS.

The Android 4.0.4 firmware for Xperia Ray!

Posted by OffLineR
I feel ICS is better than GB on XRay.
With GB homescreen used to reload often but ICS is much better. It almost never reloads homescreen.
This is big plus for usage.

Posted by jplacson
I totally agree, ICS is way better! I could never go back to GB!

Posted by emporium
It's same 4.0.3 for me, after whole day - back GB again.

Posted by xelibry
It's the same like 4.0.3 because this firmware contain same kernel 2.6.32.9 instead of new kernel 3.0.8

Posted by bronxdude
i upgraded to 4.0.4, but the application installer app is missing!

can anyone help me with this?

Posted by iamstevie
I have a quick question about ICS (gonna post in here in case I do ever get the ray )

So on the Mini Pro (on Gingerbread I believe), you can only create folders on the homescreens. If you look at Samsungs or HTCs, you can create folders in the apps menu.

Has this changed with ICS? Or is this always going to be the case with S(E)?

Posted by jplacson
Upgraded to 4.0.4 as well

@bronxdude, try restarting your phone. Might just be a glitch. I still have it in my Applications List.

You can't, even with the latest 4.0.4 version. Virtually, the apps menu has the same GUI and features, nothing has changed since Gingerbread.

I upgraded to 4.0.4 as well, so far the device seems just a bit faster, didn't notice anything else.

Thats just a different Home Launcher. I use Go Launcher. Much faster than the stock of any of the Android brands. Allows folders in the app drawer too.

How to instal samsung's My Files into Ray? It asks for permisions start installing and shows message not installed. I want it really bad, it is most similar file manager that SE has in non smart phones.

Posted by jplacson
Not sure if Samsung opened that to other manufacturers (much like TimeScape isn't available for others to use) but you can try to use the apk found here. PLEASE DO THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK. This requires altering the system folder of your phone. And change the permission as well.

(Is your phone set to install non-market apps?)

Link to My Files Apk

Posted by OffLineR
I have been trying to update my phone's music library.
Since the ICS update it started to act idiotic didn't update the library with the new files even after several restarts and cleaning cache on Music application.

At last I have found the solution. You have to clean cache from Madia Depot application. That will solve the issue.

Cheers.

You need to have rooted your phone for this to work, then use something like root explorer to copy and paste the file over, not forgetting to change the permissions to rw,r,r
