Arc is MUCH better, but too big for me.

I can't believe it's impossible to get what I want. Small size, good video-recording with good audio.
So yet again I'm staying with my Aino, which doesn't have the high resolution, but has good audio in the video-recordings.

you're not just leaving with a high resolution, you are leaving with all the PRO's of Xperia Ray can offer you, in Exchange of a High Audio in Video Recordings from your Aino.

I'll just bring them both if i were you, or just stay away from SE and buy something from a different manufacturer

No Offense but your post is the Strangest Post I ever Read in my entire life

I'm done with SE.

It makes no sense why they start making phones that gives so low quality audio, when they have done devices that gives great audio.

It's like their new trend. Reduce quality for each handset. First make great cameras in W800 and K800, then make a bunch of devices with crap camera.

Just so happens that video-recording is an important factor to me, and ever since Neo disappointed me I've been waiting for the Ray. It just amazes me that it has the same low crap quality, when both Arc and Neo and Ray is supposed to be the same model more or less. Why does only Arc have great audio?

What the hell good does a high resolution do you, if the audio is insanely low? Imagine you assembling a DVD with the recordings you and your girlfriend have made. Volume will constantly go up and down. Up everytime an Arc video is playing, and down everytime a Ray video is playing. Simply unacceptable and I used to think that was below SE quality, but apparently it's the style they intend to stay with. So sad.

Yes, I saw this last week but was told it is not on PAYG then and it was a printing error which seems a recurring theme with Carphone Warehouse as there were errors with the Mini and Min pro prices last month and seems to be carrying on this month too as the website says you can get them for £149/199 on PAYG but the September price list booklet says they are £199/249. The website doesn't have the ray on PAYG so I assume that what I was told was correct but will check tomorrow when I go into Leicester as if not on PAYG why are they advertising it as being available? which would be a shame as the advertised price is £50 cheaper than O2's price.

It will be soon though on Pay & go it's just first stocks normally are reserved for contracts. All other Xperia phones were on pay & go from the off. And yes,Carphone Warehouse are always making errors

What is you firmware version?
If you are running a version older than 4.0.A.2.368, only one of the mics are used for video recording. Starting from this version, both mics should be used during video capturing (stereo sound, should be better quality).

Posted by mr_lou
Yes, it is 4.0.A.2.368 I'm using, and both mics does record, but only 40-50% as high as the Arc does. I have to use an audio-normalize filter in a video-editor in order to get the same volume.
Same problem with Neo and even worse on Vivaz. I can't believe I've kept on buying their shit for so long, constantly thinking that now they must have fixed it.

I'll be using the audio-normalize filter solution for a little while, and then go other brands from now on. Ray is my last SE phone.

Posted by mr_lou
Well, updated girlfriends Arc yesterday, and now it has the same low crap audio as Neo and Ray.
Not as bad as Vivaz Pro, but definitely too poor to be useful.

Audio in SE Aino and Nokia N82 is much better.

Check for yourself.

Arc, Neo and Ray needs that same record-volume as Aino before video-recording can be used for anything. (And how the Vivaz ever got away with being branded as a video-recorder I have no clue. It's completely useles for that exact function).

Why are you using a phone for proper video recording?

Because the manufacturer says it can be used for it, and I don't want to carry two devices with me, and the (image) quality is quite good enough for me, even on Aino (except in dark surroundings).

Don't call it proper video-recording then, whatever you mean by that. I can definitely settle for phone quality from N82 and Aino. And I'd rather keep on using Aino with proper audio, than superb Full-HD^2 + crap audio.

I like the size of Ray. It's exactly the size for an Android device I've been waiting for ever since Android devices started coming out.
Now if only they'd fix the audio-recording, it would be perfect for me.
But I guess I have to look to XDA-developers if I want the perfect device.

Hey Bonovox, I was initially going to upgrade from my X10 Mini Pro to the Xperia Mini Pro... but I've tried both the Mini Pro and ray and I prefer the ray.

One, the screen res is way higher than the Mini Pro, this allows more app compatibility than the Mini or Mini Pro. It has the same res as the arc.

Two, it's a LOT smaller. The Mini and Mini Pro may be shorter, but they are both a lot thicker. Volume-wise, the ray wins out, and it's a lot easier to slip into a shirt chest pocket, or back jeans pocket. It's also a lot lighter

Three, Camera "should" be better. I haven't had a chance to do an A/B in equal lighting for both, but it supposedly has the Exmor low-light sensor and a bigger f-stop (2.4 vs 2.6 for the Mini Pro)

My primary purpose for getting my X10MP was it was one of the smallest Android phones on the market, the ray surpassed that and gave me a much better screen (more than 2x the res of the Mini and Mini Pro) It also has better 'claimed' battery life...I'll believe that when I actually try it out for an enduro test.

Mini & Mini Pro yes may be a little chubby but the screen is a better wider size imo for me anyway. And I just thought the feel of the Ray was nothing THAT amazing. From previews(not sure of finished product)the Ray photos are like the Neo in other words not as much detail as Arc. But to me even Arc is average in terms of quality photos. The Nokia N8 is still the camera to beat. The Mini Pro has very solid build

There is a vast difference between x10 mini pro and mini pro. Screen is bigger and many more. No doubt, ray has more pixel density then mini pro so ray screen should be sharper and brighter then mini pro. Battery is 1500 mAh and mini pro has 1300 mAh. So ray should last long. Other difference between ray and mini pro is exmor R sensor. In count, 4 major changes - Screen, battery, 8.1 mp with Exmor R, Thickness. Other main things like processors and ram are same. I am not defending mini pro or condeming ray. I dont have any of them. But i am planning to buy one either mini pro or ray. So far Mini pro wins race for me.

Posted by Bonovox
Exmor R just produces more noise. Even on the Sony camera I have Sony HX9v it's better on that cos it's a proper camera but night images they get too smoothed out. Sony Exmor R is trying to remove the noise but all they do is smooth it out which then smudges detail Another thing I never realised with the Ray is not shutter key. It really does help taking more steady shots with a shutter key

Have you noticed any difference between screen responsiveness(speed) of the mini/ray?

Don't really understand this, if my program to calculate width (x, in mm) and height (y, in mm) is correct :

3.3 inches @ 480 x 854 pix => x = 41, y = 73, d = 84 xperia ray
3.0 inches @ 320 x 480 pix => x = 42, y = 63, d = 76 xperia mini / x8
3.5 inches @ 480 x 800 pix => x = 46, y = 76, d = 89 san francisco
3.7 inches @ 480 x 854 pix => x = 46, y = 82, d = 94 xperia neo
3.7 inches @ 480 x 800 pix => x = 48, y = 81, d = 94 desire s / nexus one
3.5 inches @ 640 x 960 pix => x = 49, y = 74, d = 89 iphone 4

Anyway, I liked it and bought it, but then I've only bought four mobile phones in my life including the Ray, and the one before the Ray was a £10 Nokia

Yes but they still made the screen more narrow but fitted more pixels in. Yes,it looks sharper but it's narrower

Posted by amardeep
Well it's not really any noticeable amount narrower, but yes, it does have more pixels in that space. Which might be good (things will look sharp), or bad (things will look small) depending on if the content being displayed is a fixed amount of pixels or can scale to the resolution available. It's about as small a screen as I'd want though, I almost bought the Neo, but preferred the design of the Ray and thought the smaller screen but more pocketable tradeoff was a good one. Not having had a smartphone before it's all a guess in the usability stakes as I have no previous experience, and nothing to compare it with. The Mini Pro has the advantage of a hardware keyboard, I guess no on-screen keyboard is displayed when that is used which gains some space (or do you always get the virtual keyboard as well) ?

Is the screen of the ray narrower than the mini? Or is it just taller? Kinda like SD vs HD

Posted by pt020
It is a real a scandal that they fitted the ray with such a small screen ... I would expect it to be a minimum 42 inch

Posted by ceaser2008
42 inch. A tv mobile

No screen on mini pro is wider but on ray its taller.

Good Morning
I just do not get this complains ... ray is for people that are ready to live with it's limits ... if you want a bigger screen buy the Arc or even 5.3 inch SG Note.
Lucky us that SE is not Apple and they have phones to fit all.

Posted by mr_lou
So..... is it possible to install a previous version of firmware?

Seems to me, if I can just get v3.0 onto my Ray, then it'll record audio at an acceptable volume. It'll be mono, but I'd rather have high mono sound than low stereo sound.

I have searched this thread and the rest of the forum, but I haven't found this question elsewhere: Has anyone noticed that the battery charging life is very poor? Mine has dropped to 75% in four hours from fully charged during the night. After disconnection of the charger, it has almost only been in standby mode. I know that the battery needs a number of recharge cycles before it reaches its peak capacity, but I find this really poor.

Carphone Warehouse say that if you have a pay and go sim you have had for six months you can upgrade to the Xperia Ray for £199 which is does say in store. Nice.

It's rather hard to find, though. I bought it at Fnac but there are few stores (only Milano, Verona, Napoli, Firenze, Torino, Genova). You can try at Mediaworld and Unieuro (it's choke full of these stores all over the country) but not all their stores sell it yet

might grab one at Fnac in Milan.... Going by there tomorrow!

Black only?? There online store says black only... maybe they had other options in store?

Yeah I saw that too ... but when it came to putting the sale through, the system didn't accept my details (my existing phone number I think). They put the phone aside for me and said they'd call back on Monday (I called in to the shop on a Saturday afternoon). I eventually called them back on Monday afternoon, and they said they couldn't honour the price, it was marked incorrectly and the actual price was £300, and £280 for a payg upgrade. I phoned another branch and they said £280 (after saying they needed my phone number to confirm price). All this despite a Ray on display in the first shop with a printed card next to it clearly saying £200 on payg upgrade. "It's a mistake" they said when I went in again and asked them about it. Very strange. I bought it anyway as I needed a new phone now, and because the price is OK compared to what's currently on the web, but it's poor practice to advertise one thing but charge another much higher price.

But, an email from se- india gave an impression that they'd give it but later when i asked the price, i asked this again but then they replied no livesound is included. Seems they themselves are not sure whether they'll give it or not! I'm waiting for it to reach the retail outlets. If someone has spotted this in any retail shops or have any info regarding this matter, please post it here..

Just a question for those who have seen both the black and white ray...

Is the aluminum frame a different color on each? Is the one on the black one gun metal gray, and the one on the white one silver?

Yes,but look at the detailing in the photos it's awful

How can you expect a better pictures if the lens of the camera is covered by a thick layer of finger prints and such?

I haven't seen the white one IRL, but the black one is "gun metal" or dark grey metallic, like on an expensive car. Also, the back cover is some kind of black plastic, but with a silky surface which is very comfortable to touch and hold. I'm not sure that the white one has that kind of back cover.

Posted by lolstebbo
Camera samples look fine until you crop in, something that the people who actually use these phones will probably never do. Therefore, imo there's nothing terribly wrong with the image quality. If I'm going to pixel peep, I'll just haul my SLR everywhere instead.

Yes i know what you are saying but SE cameras why are they getting worse?? The Arc,Neo,Ray and new Mini phones are not a patch on the older x10. For some reason the Xperia Play seems better for pics
