I have checked daily but nothing as yet. Woman at T Mobile said oh yes you can download that update from Android Market. I just hung up

In the XDA Samsung Galaxy S2 Development thread, which developers rom should I be looking out for.
There are always the 'big boys' that cook up the best roms.
I need to filter because there is just so much going on in that thread it makes my head spin.
I know exactly how now to change roms after some reading.
The software ODIN works exactly like FLASHTOOL for Xperia phones.
Easy peasy

Posted by jj03
hobbs...i'd recommend flashing the 2.3.5. build. of all the roms i've flashed from other developers, this leaked samsung rom is far and away the smoothest and quickest i've ever used. it has support for full dual-core use and it really shows. no lag no nothing...good battery life

Just watched some YouTube videos on rooting and installing custom roms and it all looks pretty simple.Pretty much exactly what I was doing on the X10.Just going to wait for my 7 day return 'if anything goes wrong with the phone' policy falls away and then I'm gonna get stuck in.

I'd say look in the Original Android Development forum to start with...

My GS2 keeps restarting all of a sudden 3 times today

Posted by jj03

try the hyperdroid androidmeda rom ...its super fast and has excellent battery life....flash the rom and then flash docs surgeon over it...it changes dpi to 192...

Think Im going to do a couple weeks on stock and enjoy what I have. Its way to early to start obsessively tinkling with this phone. My poor X10 was lucky to make it out alive Once you root and get xRecovery installed, you screwed. You start changing your rom every couple of weeks just because you can and its so damn easy.

Bono Hope your SII has settled itself and you are having no more reboots.

Posted by Bonovox
Well I have but I have not installed anything on it for over a week. Bloody expensive phones always play up

Posted by Hobbs
Ah forgot about 2.3.7 Cyanogen 7.1 (wasnt available for X10 so I totally forgot about it) Over to YouTube I go for an indepth review.

mrao Thanks.Will check it out.

Oh dear,I wish I hadn't watched those reviews. The Cyanogen 7.1 rom flies. No harm though I can backup the stock rom in Recovery if I ever want to painlessly switch back but I think I've got to at least try it out.Overclocked at 1600ghz it nails a 5400+ on a Quandrant benchmark. The highest Ive gotten on stock is 3700.

Posted by Hobbs
I quite fancy Samsungs Touchwiz.

Posted by jj03
4800 on 2.3.5.

Posted by Hobbs
jj nice one.

Posted by jj03
hey guys...don't forget the 10p sale on the android market. 10 apps all at 10p for 10 days. different apps each day i think. i bought a few already heh. the promotion is because android has passed 10 billion in downloads.

This ones for you Bono. Its so straightforward theres no need to be scared.

All done.Rooted.Mmm,what can I do next

Posted by Hobbs
Just flashed Clockworkmod-recovery onto my phone. This is where things go pear-shaped and your phone takes a pounding.

Posted by daviep
forgive the noob question but what are the advantages of rooting your phone?

Posted by adsada
@daviep check out this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1133650 tells you everything you need to know

Now I need help!

I am looking at the S2 and I came across an ad that sells the phone but states that it is 'stuck in flight mode' and so does not have signal. Is this a serious problem, or could is there a solution, apparently its a common problem...

thanks

My main reasons for rooting are
To installs Recovery so I can switch between different roms when I get bored .
To change system fonts.
Use Titanium Backup to remove unwanted system applications.
Change my screen resolution

That's all I can think of at the moment.

You can unroot whenever you feel like it and with Recovery installed you can backup your stock rom so if anything goes wrong you can just enter Recovery mode and restore.

Its nice having all these extra options.

Its not for everyone though because things can go awfully wrong but I've always managed to bring my X10 back to life.Let's hope Sammy plays along too.

Posted by Hobbs
Bono Hows your phone doing.Any more random reboots?

Posted by Hobbs
Thank goodness that all went well.Just installed my first rom onto the S2.
I chose the 2.3.6 CheckROM Revolution HD v4 from XDA http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1312240

Check out my Quadrant benchmark ...4209

@hobbs
what do you mean change screen resolution by rooting?

Posted by Hobbs
Theres an app on the market called LCD Resolution that requires root where you can increase/decrease your screens resolution.

Posted by Caspa
Yeah, a lot of ROMs come with different resolution options... What DPI you set at Hobbs?

Proper dying to get back to Android but unsure if work will come through with the G-Nexus, its 200 quid upfront as its an additional line on the existing share... Even with that phone I'll be rooting and whacking a custom ROM on with all the trimmings...

Posted by Hobbs
With LCD Resolultion I put the density on 180 (640x1066). You can go lower than that but then things like the icons in your notification area start doing wierd things like blurring, overlapping ect But 180 for me was perfect.

Posted by mriley
Did you see a significant improvement over the deafault dpi?

Posted by Hobbs
I cant say I did.Used it on my X10 which feels like ages ago (only a week). Now with the beautiful screen on this G2 I cant even remember how my X10's screen looked.
[ This Message was edited by: Hobbs on 2011-12-09 15:08 ]

Posted by mriley
The only problem with the display is the low dpi, pixeleted text on websites etc

Posted by jj03
dpi change can hammer the battery so be careful..besides the fact that the screen res is good enough on the gs2 as it is...also remember that if you change the dpi some apps will look funny (white pixelly lines...even icon cracks).

Posted by Hobbs
I dont use it on the G2.It doesnt like the Samsung Touchwiz homescreens. You need to use a third 3rd party launcher.

Posted by Caspa
Yeah, I've never used it personally but some people seem to swear by it and HAVE to change the DPI...

I disagree, the resolution doesn't compare with the iPhone and it;s one of the factors that lets the phone down, every other aspect of the display is stunning.

Posted by Bonovox
Except the horrible blue tint in whites when viewed outside

Posted by rikken
The screen is brilliant in every way

Posted by mriley
@bono
I haven't noticed that

@rikken
But haven't you previously owned an iPhone 4? so resolution isn't brilliant

Posted by Bonovox
If you look either from angles or when screen is white outdoors it has a horrible blue tint. That's S-AMOLED for you

Posted by rikken
mriley, I prefer the size and quality on the S II over the size and resolution on the iPhone 4, imo that one is pale
bono, I have no blue tint on my screen, honestly

Posted by Bonovox
Your eyes have probably adjusted to it. But I see it when I compare the white screen next to my Play. It's the over saturated colours that makes it slightly blue tinted.

Posted by Miss UK
Rikken that's funny ^^ lol
Even so I'm posting of my iPhone now
In stitches !

Posted by jj03
i agree wirh you rikken...i much prefer the screen size over the iphones 315/20 dpi...i guess i'm just one of those people who don't care about that sorta shit...hd vids already look fantastic on a screen this size...each to their own i suppose.

This rom has pretty good battery life.Battery on 1d 5h and I'm sitting on 36%.Been using the phone moderately, but still. There obviously will be days when you pound your phone and it wont even go a day but its nice to know if you're conservative it will get you through a day and a bit, easily.

Posted by adsada
@bono I agree, the SuperAMOLED screen is one thing made be avoid the S2. Yes it is bright and crisp but it lacks really any sort of colour, its just ugly! The colours are completely unnatural, I want my white to be white, not white with a tint of yellow/blue. On the other hand I use the arc with it's Reality display, and being completelu objective I much prefer this display. Yes it may not have the best viewing angles - but I only even look at it from straight on. But the best part is in the name, 'reality' and it does show true realistic colours of how the thing you're looking at would look in real life.

Another annoyance with the AMOLED is that it only looks 'decent' when the brightness it on a highish amount, turn it right down to save power, and it looses the qualities it had, the arc can go as low as it needs to, while retaining colour. Just my opinion, no doubt most of you will disagree.
