13 February 2011February 13, 2011, Barcelona, Spain - Sony Ericsson today announced the game changing XperiaTM PLAY, the latest phone in its XperiaTM range of Android based smartphones.

XperiaTM PLAY delivers the smartphone functionality that the most serious power users could need, teamed with the immersive gaming experience that any gamer would want.

In portrait mode, the Android smartphone offers all the benefits that users have come to expect from Sony Ericsson’s existing range of XperiaTM smartphones with best-in-class entertainment experiences, a great 5 megapixel camera, a brilliant 4” multi-touch screen and great social networking features.

However, slide out the gaming control and users enter a new world of immersive mobile gaming. The slide out game pad reveals a digital D pad, two analogue touch pads, two shoulder buttons and the four PlayStation icons: circle, cross, square and triangle. Qualcomm’s optimized Snapdragon processor with a 1Ghz CPU and embedded Adreno GPU graphics processor deliver silky smooth 60fps play-back 3D mobile gaming and Web browsing with minimal power consumption so Xperia PLAY users can enjoy long hours of battery life and game time.

Rikko Sakaguchi, Executive Vice President and Chief Creation Officer at Sony Ericsson commented: “Today is a very proud moment for Sony Ericsson as we bring something truly revolutionary to the market. Living up to our vision of Communication Entertainment, Xperia PLAY will forever change the way people think about smartphones and mobile gaming.

XperiaTM PLAY will run on Gingerbread (version 2.3), the latest version of Google’s AndroidTM platform. The XperiaTM PLAY will also be the first PlayStation Certified device. This means it will have access to PlayStation® game content provided through the PlayStation® Suite initiative, currently under development by Sony Computer Entertainment and due to launch later this calendar year.

Kazuo Hirai, President of Networked Products and Services Group at Sony Corporation said: "I am delighted to see Xperia PLAY as the first PlayStation Certified smartphone to hit the market. Xperia PLAY provides a unique consumer offering and is yet another example of great products and services coming to market that leverage Sony's strong assets."

Sony Ericsson has partnered with key publishers in the gaming industry to deliver a rich, vibrant ecosystem at launch and post launch with many leading new titles available via the AndroidTM Marketplace. Leading franchises coming to Xperia™ PLAY includes EA’s Need For Speed, Sims 3 and a world-first multiplayer version of FIFA 10 for mobile. GLU Mobile/Activision will be bringing Guitar Hero while Gameloft’s titles include Assassin’s Creed and Splinter Cell. Sony Ericsson is also partnering with Unity Technologies, using its award-winning development platform, to ensure a continuous flow of high quality 3D game titles.

Mr Sakaguchi continued: “The launch of Xperia PLAY could not have been possible without the close collaboration of both Google and Sony Computer Entertainment. The commitment of so many industry leading game publishers further demonstrates that Xperia PLAY will deliver on the long-held expectations from consumers the world over.”

XperiaTM PLAY and PlayStation Certified gaming are great examples of the kind of innovation that’s possible in the open Android ecosystem,” said Andy Rubin, Vice President of Engineering at Google.

A pre-loaded application will enable users to easily discover and download titles that have been optimised for game play on Xperia PLAY, access recently played games and see information about the games they have downloaded.

Sony Ericsson Xperia™ PLAY will be available globally in selected markets from March 2011

What do our content partners say?

Electronic Arts, Travis Boatman, VP of Worldwide Studios for EA Mobile:

The Xperia PLAYS’s unique gamepad also delivers robust control in The Sims 3 bringing a whole new life simulation experience to fans of thefranchise. We look forward to watching consumers interact with our great games in new ways through the Xperia PLAY.”

Gameloft, Michel Guillemot, President:

This vision is realized with the launch of Xperia PLAY, which combines a perfect smartphone for daily use as well as a real game controller to provide the best gaming experience ever seen on a mobile phone. Gameloft will support the launch with more than 20 titles over the next 6 months that will take full advantage of the power of this device.”

Pierre Peron, Sony Ericsson's France CEO about Xperia Play pricing in France :
It will cost less than 600 euros without contract...launch in April

@smclion102: I mean, why a different name for the same product?

The "a" is for the americas. Not for the US only.

I assume the "at" is for at&t?

optimized Snapdragon processor

What do they mean by optimised ? Is the Snapdragon CPU that they put in there special and unique to SE or did they just up the frequency by 10mhz or something?

Posted by tranced
I guess it was optimized for the games that will run in it. How? Don't know.

Posted by goldenface
Play to launch on 31st March and will be priced at £40 or under on all UK networks. Live in-store demos planned.

looks good, never thought i would be into gaming on phones until i got my Iphone 4, so this could be interesting at least one advantage over my iphone is Physical buttons for Gaming much better than touch screen.

Posted by goldenface
Yeah, I just been playing asphalt on my X10 and it looks much more fun with physical buttons on the Play.

Posted by angryman
since the s.e x play is geared towards gaming where performance is paramount , does this mean s.e will not load the firmware with useless junk that runs in the background and chews ul CPU time such as face detection ?

Sony Ericsson has kicked off a contest to promote their new Playstation Phone, Xperia Play in some European Countries and it has resulted in the device’s price being revealed.

The contest has 10 Xperia Play phones up for grab. The contest page values the total amount to be 4999,00 € which means one unit is priced around 499,00 €.

Pretty decent for such a high-level phone. What do you think?

So, Ive watched like a hundred YouTube videos and read dozens of reports on the Xperia Play.... ONE THING however always fails to get mentioned.... WILL IT REMOTE PLAY w/ PS3? ... So I started searching and searching.... and found NOTHING! .... I'm starting to get a bit scared that this device is only "PlayStation Certified" as you hear and read in like every review but in all actuality is not a PlayStation compatible device.... then I find this on the Sony site....

"So, is this the PlayStation™ phone?"
Once a fantasy. Now a reality. The first PlayStation™ certified Android smartphone gives you incredible graphics, great sound and real game controller. This phone is not actually named "the PlayStation™ phone" though - we call it Xperia™ PLAY.

WoW.. talking about disappointing.... I'm willing to bet this is in fact NOT the phone I have been waiting for nor is it even compatible with remote play... it seems like the PSP2 has better stats to fill that want. WHy won't sony just make an actual PlayStation or PSP phone?

Posted by Indiandawg
I usually don't play much games cause of work but if it can run Cricket game and F1 (good graphics) then I would love to buy PLAY!
So far we can run only PSX games right? What about games that run on PSP?

Geohot to Hack Sony Ericsson Xperia Play (PlayStation Phone) Next !

Despite the lawsuit which Sony has filed against Geohot for jailbreaking PlayStation 3, Geohot has made it clear that he wants to be the first person in line when the Xperia Play (aka PlayStation Phone) is launched, so that he can hack the device and use it to its full potential.

Asking for help and support from his fans to fight Sony, Geohot wrote:

In fact, I want the opposite reputation set, that the more a company tries to abuse the legal system, the harder we rally back. I will be the first person in line on the launch date of the Xperia Play, and itching to get my hands on the Next GEOHOT Project.
