Its great specially on xray the swype keyboard I mean the letter on the actual keyboard getting bold isn't an issue everything on the update had been awesome good job

Battery life has significantly improved on the 2.3.4 update, as well as 3G and HSPDA issues seem to have been resolved (previously the connection kept dropping).

Not really noticing any speed improvements.

Real shame some of the widgets in the previous firmware (2.3.4 .28) have not been included (on the Generic UK anyway), i.e. World Clock widget, timer widget, calendar widget and new analog clock widget. Don't know why these were dropped unless they had bugs in the them.

Yeah it's great, but I've using the original Swype and it's really good to use, I had a quite go to SE's version which is pretty much the same but I prefer swype because the keyboard looks nicer imo. You could also have a look at videos to see how to get the most out of it (like when spelling a word with 2 of the same letters you do a loop over the letter, like 'look' and to make a letter a capital you swipe above the keyboard) I don't know if its the same for SE's one though

That's odd because Im also on UK generic and got the new widgets, you can downloading them from here anyway (credit to Xperiablog for uploading them)

Thanks for that, I've downloaded the widgets and installed them.

Did you get the world clock widget and the calendar one?

Yes, although actually I just realised the widgets I have may be from when I installed them myself with the ones using the link I gave you a couple months back. Then forgot about. Though I do have the calendar one which is new? I'm confused now because I also did a complete reinstall since then which deleted everything but I used a back up app, and maybe restored the widgets I had placed myself

If that makes any sense haha, so if I have the calendar I must have been given them when I updated to 2.3.4 and not because I placed them there myself?

Do you have the world clock and calendar widget links from before?

Have downloaded the other three but not sure how to get them working on my phone...

Where should I save them on the sd card? Do I have to do anything else?

Thanks

For me the latest upgrade is great.
The phone is definitely snappier.
And battery life is even better.

I don't have any new clock or calendar widgets.
Analogue clock was here since the beginning.
But there is new nice weather one.

Video now is in stereo and the sound is better.
Camera is also snappier.
The only letdown: you watch photos you made only in gallery now.

So no fullsize preview anymore. Bad.......

You have to do couple of things, first off go to Home > Settings > Applications and make sure the 'Unknown sources' box is ticked. You will also need to download a file manager (so you can access files on the sd card) I use ASTRO download that from the Android Market and install.

Now place the .apk files on your memory card (anywhere is fine, but put them somewhere where you can easily find them) Then open the ASTRO app and navigate to the place on the SD card you put the files, then click on them and it will give you the option to install them.

Yes i am having the same problem too. Very annoying having to go into the stock messaging app everytime. Unforunately i have no idea how/if this can be fixed, unless the next minor firmware update corrects this in anyway. Hope so.

4.0.2.A.0.42 is the update we all got when going from 2.3.3 to 2.3.4. Nordic regions got 2.3.4 first but in the form of 4.0.1.A.0.283, the only difference between that and 4.0.2.A.0.42 is a couple of bug fixes but nothing major.

Engadget IRL, they talk about gadgets they use in real life. Arc is being used by one of the writers as his regular phone.

"Arguably Sony Ericsson's flagship handset, the skinny Arc follows me everywhere. This one's now approaching the six-month mark, always accompanying me alongside my wallet and whatever new phone I'm getting to grips with (fortunately, I haven't taken to the Engadget trend of rocking five phones on four operating systems just yet). This is the one I keep coming back to when all those review handsets have flown the nest back to their respective manufacturers. Fundamentally, it's a single-core Android phone, running Gingerbread. It's got a 4.2-inch LCD display and an eight megapixel camera that can record 720p HD video. But casting the middleweight specifications aside, when I'm away from my desk and using the phone, there's so much to love. The curved frame that slips into my pocket, the tactile buttons and the camera, which is superb." (...)

Totally agree with what he says. Yes the build quality could be better, maybe a dualcore and some better specs overall, but the arc just works. Its a great phone, good battery life decent performance great camera. What more can you ask of a phone?

Arc is certainly one of the better phones SE has ever made. Its one of the FEW android phones who can challenge Iphone as a "normal phone" (cant describe it better)

Posted by mario2004
I got to play with a arc yesterday. Nice indeed however, I took a few pics and compared them side by side to my old N8. What a disappointment . . .

@worf1000 the rules you wrote can't be used IRL, i want to use the extended battery only when i need the extra life (not beeing able to load it every night) else i prefer a nice looking phone, there is no chance i will permenatly use the big "ugly" battery

Is anyone currently using a 32gb card in their arc? If so what class are you using? I am currently looking and have found this one and this one

What I want to know is, is there a noticeable difference between class 4 and class 10? Is it worth spending £10 more getting the class 10 or is class 4 okay in terms of speed transfer and how quick accessing the card is when playing music etc.

thanks
[ This Message was edited by: adsada on 2011-11-19 13:29 ]

Posted by masseur
class 4 represents 4mb/sec, class 10 is 10mb/sec

how often will you be transferring stuff that requires 10mb/sec? I don't think any movie you encode for a phone would hit that bit rate, and certainly no music will. it might take a bit longer to transfer stuff to your card initially though.

save your money

Posted by adsada
Ah I think I understand, so it wouldn't make any difference when browsing music/playing it on the phone? I do occasionally put movies onto the phone around 700MB, but I currently have a class 4 8GB and don't mind the transfer speed so it'll be same? I think I've made my mind up then, sandisk also comes with 5 year guarantee. thanks

I use one of these (it cost me twice as much when I bought it).

It's perfect. I have no speed or performance issues. I use about 20GB, though, never filled it up to the top.

Be aware that some of the class ratings are not accurate or are completely faked. My understanding is that the class ratings are ambiguous and are open to interpretation or not enforced.

Posted by masseur
I would choose class 6 over class 4 as that will certainly cover all usual phone usages and at this price, its a bargain, especially when recommended as it is here (though I've never heard of this brand?)

32gb SD-CARDS

Posted by adsada
I am always suspicious when buying off amazon third party sellers because its practically like buying off ebay (which in my experience have always been fake) play.com on the other hand can be trusted. I've never heard of Komputerbay either, but you say you've bought from that seller and it's been good? thanks

Posted by Bonovox
Amazon & Play.com sell very dirt cheap cards of all types under their own brand names. I would be a bit sceptical about high class ratings on something so cheap. I use a 16 gig Sandisk micro SD it's always been reliable for me that brand.

Is that a class 4? I agree, ages ago when I was naïve I bought a 4gb PRO duo of ebay and it only worked up to about 2gb before not allowing any more data I didn't even question if it was fake, before it fell apart... . But yeah sandisk is a make I trust, think I'll just go for 32gb one off ebay.

i use 32gb sandisk , most reliable, class 6, hard to find class 8 and 10 but thats only for transfer.
Ive used sandisk with all my devices(phones, cameras etc) (other then the old phones that used m2)

filled it with hd music videos which run in my car.
cheap now in australia $80au

Posted by Ricky D
I'd never heard of komputerbay before I bought that card either. At that time I decided to take the risk on it anyway. I've never taken it for a proper speed test but I can vouch that hasn't broken down yet, given me bad read/writes or shown any signs that it's too slow for me needs.

I'l do a few small file, medium file and large file size transfers to and from and give you back the results. Be back in a short while.

Posted by Ricky D
OK, I've done a quick test of my 32GB (supposedly class6) card, which I bought from the aforementioned Amazon seller's link.

I tested with a three different file sets:

Small files - a web site I'm working on, 1400 files and most if not all of them less than 1MB, total 462MB.
Medium files - long album (Beatles number 1s album), 27 files between 4MB-10MB each, total 181MB.
Large file - this week's FXP X10 ROM, 1 file, total 91MB

I took the card out of the phone and put it in one of these thumb size card readers to eliminate the phone as a source of slow progress. I also did each file set individually read and write.

Unfortunately I didn't have a high-tech programme to tell me all the results so I just copied in and out with Windows 7, read the details on what it thinks the speed is and timed it with my analogue wrist watch.

In case you are thinking it might effect the results, my PC is a core i7 920, 6GB RAM and I copied into the card from my secondary HDD but copied from the card to my primary SSD.

The Juice

Small file transfer (1400 files / 0-1MB / 462MB):
Write speed: 3.5 MB/s to 4.5MB/s
Write time: ~2 mins
Read speed: 11MB/s to 13MB/s
Read time: ~40s

Medium file transfer (27 files / 4-10MB / 181MB):
Write speed: 6MB/s to 9MB/s
Write time: ~30s
Read speed: 13MB/s to 15MB/s
Read time: ~15s

Large file transfer (1 file / 91MB / 91MB):
Write speed: 8MB/s to 10MB/s
Write time: less than 10s
Read speed: peaked 28MB/s
Read time: less than 5s

As you can see, the results show a consistent 10MB/s+ read speed and the write speed is also fast if the file size is above a certain threshold. It seems to be worthy of it's class 6 rating. All files transferred have to be confirmed to be correct after it's sending, so the extra time in pushing lots of small files is typical and expected.

Try downloading a gif reader from the Android Market like this one

Posted by gayannr
Pathetic, given age old SE dumb phones could play gifs right out of the box :-/

I must say that after the latest update the Arc is simply great.

Posted by adsada
I just rooted my arc, and cleaned out all the crapware. The speed increase is simply amazing and the free RAM that was previously wasted. I cannot recommend it enough, although I'm quite bad at modding my prized possessions I don't like to take risks (no matter safe it is!) I didn't realise quite how easy rooting actually is.

Download the file, then click RUNME.bat and follow the instructions all you have to do is plug the phone in and that's it less then 30 seconds you'll be rooted. So happy, but annoyed it took me this long to do it!

The S2 is supported by using DooMLoRD's Easy Rooting Toolkit
http:// http://forum.xda-developers.c[....]ad.php?p=18805560#post18805560

It's the easiest way, before when I researched rooting and it talked about how I would have to downgrade the firmware then flash etc. and just seemed complicated but this really is no sweat!

bite the bullet!

I think this post pretty much sums up the Arc for me. I've had it now for 8 months and whilst it's never going to challenge the likes of the SGS2 and the iPhone for the average consumer, it is a solid phone, and arguably SE's best Android phone to date.

Sure it has it's annoyances (random re-boots, a little bit of lag now and then, camera restricted by overly harsh post processing), but design wise it is great, it holds well in the hand and the screen is lovely to use. SE also learn't by their previous mistakes and seem to be learning as they go along.

Agreed. And I think it actually can compete with dual cores as well besides maybe some heavy games. Otherwise it's almost excellent. Definitely best device since P910i.
