The All New Sony Ericsson Portfolio for 2011

SE just needs to adjust their pricing and marketing. they've released good phones this year but their perception of "top tier" is more akin to other manufacturers' "mid tier".

like everyone else, i'd like to see a SE phone with cutting edge specs but if that's not gonna happen, there's nothing wrong with targeting the mid-tier to low-tier segment.

they just have to slash some prices and re-class their phones down a level.

would anybody complain if SE said the Arc was a mid-tier phone and 25% cheaper off the MSRP?

Sony Ericsson CEO Confident Company Will Avoid Patent Wars

STOCKHOLM (Dow Jones)--Sony Ericsson, the mobile handset joint venture between Telefon AB L.M. Ericsson (ERIC) and Sony Corp. (SNE), will not become embroiled in the legal battles over patents engulfing its rivals because of its large existing patent portfolio and its policy of cross-licensing those patents, its Chief Executive says.

Patent disputes within the industry have recently intensified, with Apple Inc. (AAPL) bringing a number of cases against South Korean rival Samsung Electronics Co. (005930.SE), claiming its smartphones and tablets have "slavishly" copied the iPhone and iPad. Apple has filed suits in, Australia, Germany, Japan, France and South Korea and managed to temporarily ban Samsung from selling one of its Galaxy Tab models in the European Union.

"Right now this industry is in the midst of the largest patent war that I have ever experienced," said Sony Ericsson Chief Executive Bert Nordberg, a 26-year veteran of the communications industry.

However, Sony Ericsson is not worried about defending its own portfolio of products, Nordberg told Dow Jones Newswires in an interview, describing the company as "one of the most patent safe companies around."

"Apart from our own 6,000 patents, we're licensed to use the combined patent portfolios of both our owners, Sony and Ericsson," he said.

Sony Ericsson has managed to avoid any major patent disputes, mainly because its large patent portfolio means that it is able to solve patent issues by cross licensing agreements, whereby it may use other players' patents in return for them using Sony Ericsson's technology, Nordberg added.

The CEO says companies are now far more defensive about technology they've developed, preventing rivals from using it rather than making them reach for the cheque book. He has some sympathy for this new approach given the amount of time, effort and resources put into the technology.

"If I were to invest billions on a development project, I would be disappointed if someone who hasn't invested a single penny uses my technology without permission."

However, Nordberg said he is an outspoken critic of the growing emergence of patent trolls, which buy patents mindlessly and try to sue technology firms in the hope of making some money.

"I respect those who actually spend time and money developing technology, but these guys have only one ambition and that is to make you pay," he said.

Nordberg said he supports Google Inc.'s (GOOG) acquisition of Motororola Mobility Holdings Inc. (MMI), and is sure the deal was about patents. He said Google discussed the deal with partners like Sony Ericsson before it made the purchase and hence he knows the reasoning.

"I'm utterly convinced that the reason Google purchased Motorola was because of patents, and in that light I'm sincerely positive about this deal," he said, adding that Google's patent protection was "a bit weak" before it decided to acquire Motorola.

However, with Sony Ericsson desperate to break further into the U.S. market, where it is currently weak, Nordberg said there must be some protection given to Motorola's rivals. Google's Android operating system is currently the only platform used by Sony Ericsson on its smartphones.

"It's important that Google erects a Chinese Wall between itself and Motorola and that Google makes sure not to grant Motorola any advantages."

I dont think that it is test hardware..Because there is a "huge" size difference between 28nm and 45nm,and we all know that space in mobile phones,is used really carefully...After all,"Nozomi" or whatever it is gonna be called wont be a bad phone, just like arc is not a bad phone. It just needs the right pricing...I wouldnt complain if arc had a 16gb flash memory and had launched for 399eur...actually i think it could have done reasonably well...But the arc launched for 550eur+,which i think is gonna be the case with "Nozomi" as well..

It does not seem a problem - mini, mini pro and Arc has absolutely different size, but use the same hardware... Time will tell

Posted by randomuser
I absolutely agree with the posts on pricing here. In India the Arc costs almost the same as Galaxy S2, HTC Sensation and MORE than Optimus 2X.

If the hardware is only mid range, then they should price it accordingly too. Hope Nozomi will be priced sensibly a level below Galaxy S3 and the likes.

I keep reading about mid-range H/W, is it only CPU, CPU+RAM or CPU+RAM+Other stuff?

Dont act cocky like you have billions of cash saved-up .In a year Windows Phone will also Become Popular so Don't be late to join the windows Club.

Yeah, need Epiphany-IV 64-core RISC co-processor by the WMC!!!

Well I`m not into cutting edge hardwere, but even I realised in last year or two, that more and more people are... so why didn`t get that?
I agree with the pricing either.. it`s the first thing borrow from Sony. it would be nice if they borrow technologies from which is always class leading... but after 10 years we are still far from seeing this happen.

I think we lay all the speculations of a Sony or Ericsson take over to rest as October 1 has passed and apparently the contract has been renewed

You guys need to relax, there will not be an end to the joint-venture. The Nozomi is scheduled for next year as a Sony Ericsson and not Sony or even Ericsson.

Such decisions are not just taken out of the blue, extensive negotiations take place beforehand. Also, the rumour that suggests that SE will have their biggest portfolio next year again suggests they are in this for the long haul.

SE is still around unless their financial situation takes a turn for the worse.

I also don't see Ericsson making it on their own, not that they would entertain such a thought as the cellphone market for them is a small package of the business and they still make a sizeable amount of money from patents. Either side is doomed should the venture end. As much as I would love to see and use an Ericsson phone but they will not come back alone.

This joint-venture still has the potential to be successful and they are not doing that bad as compared to previous years, particularly after 2006, so they are still in with a chance.

I just hope they don't make any more losses from now on. I am still waiting to buy me a Sony Ericsson Android monster. Hopefully next year is that year.

100% agree. Additionally, also consider HW design - SE will kick some a**es next year

1- 8 megapixel sensor that shoots 3264×2448 = from sony
2- backside illumination with a sensor that gathers 72 percent more light = from sony " Exmor R "
3- a hybrid IR filter for better color accuracy = maybe same bravia engine
4- f/2.4 aperture = same camera xperia arc , neo and ray

I'd guess so. Any more phones announced this year will probably surface 2012.

@bronxdude,

8mp, and backside illumination are the features of exmor R... I had read somewhere that the camera for iphone4s was being made by sony itself.. Not sure if it is correct or not, but looks like it..

Posted by razec
It was rumored few months ago that iPhone 4S might be using Sony Image Sensors. i don't know that much but i'm quite sure Apple used the Sony Sensor and made their own lens module. Apple seems to have more aspherical lens layers than the typical sony camera module. as for image quality, i think iphone can't brag that much over what we now see at unless they write their own post processing algorithm and bring forth the true potential of the sony sensors.

As for the 1080p recording, yes the Sony sensors used in Arc~ already supports that, but since is currently stuck with Adreno 205, we can't see them recording at that resolution. if they did, they might pose a threat to Samsung GS2's, since they cope with lowlights better. also Sony sensors usually found on digicams and SLD/DSLR or camcorders are known for high video quality.

here is some sample, I think Apple use this combination
Sony sensor with modified lens module and Apple design Image Signal Processor

Sony Nears Deal to Buy Out Ericsson From Joint Venture

In a sign of the central role smartphones will play in its future consumer-electronics strategy, Sony Corp. is nearing a deal to buy out Telefon AB L.M. Ericsson’s stake in their mobile phone joint venture, according to people familiar with the matter.

Like i said......it's a viable solution....That means, that sony wont hold back when it comes to innovation, since phones will be carrying their brand name only....And while we wont see any immediate results next year,i think that changes hardware-wise,will become apparent in 2013...Let's hope,no more plastic!!!!Time for some premium materials in high-end sector...

+Didnt anyone else noticed, that Sony Ericsson didn't make any press releases regarding their 10-year anniversary???
I mean...they make a press release regarding a game launching on xperia play, and not about their 10-year anniversary???
Wherever there is smoke, there is fire...

time to consider should Ericsson fan dump

i am considering....

Posted by goldenface
Does this mean the end of Ericsson on mobile phones? It's hard to imagine them launching their own mobile phone range after this.

It's only natural that if the JV broke it would end up in with Sony - it's been moving in that direction for years and may be we will, at last, see proper Sony muscle in it's mobiles instead of what they can hopefully squeeze out of the parent companies.

Interesting, this isn't though really surprising what will be really interesting is if this deal does go through will sony continue making phones under the Sony Ericsson brand? I'd guess they would because they have make a lot of brand awareness and following...or they could keep the liquid logo but use it as 'sony phones'?

like?

Or it might be just called 'Sony Mobile' but with the same logo.

This is a bit sudden or is it not?? My link to GSM Arena back 2 posts shows about the possible new Nozomi & Aoba. This is something I would love to upgrade to but I hope it's not too skinny

Go Sony

Posted by djin
I would take all of this with a pinch of salt, anyways their 3rd quarter results will be out and I think maybe they will announce a new phone or maybe the break up..

But i think its bad time for sony ericsson to split up , because that will just weaken their strength for an average person and also the fans of sony ericsson(who prefer ericsson more) will also be split and confused wether they should buy sony phones or not..

Right now with lower market shares, they need things to strengthen their image , which I think they have done so with the 2011 lineup, and show that they are technologically ahead(which they are lacking as of now)..

I donot see sony tablets to be a hit even though they had good designs and usability. But asus is releasing tegra 3 based tablet soon , sony tablet S with tegra 2 coming out now will not fare well.. Thinking about this itself, doesnt give me positive vibes about Sony only phones..

Posted by Bonovox
Well,Sony being a household name & now having more experience in the mobile world they could do a decent job of it. Much as I love Ericsson they may not make it on their own & they were struggling when they joined up with Sony in the first place so I remember. This would be sad though.

Posted by Indiandawg
This would turn out to be a very bad move. It does have many good points in the future but djin said, I'm not getting positives vibes from Sony

Posted by goldenface
Both Sony and Ericsson mobile were struggling. The problem with Sony Ericsson at the moment is it plays second fiddle to both Sony and Ericsson.

Sony is able to compete with Samsung when it comes to consumer electronics and Samsung Mobile has been a runaway success.

Sony Ericsson is just not as nimble as Samsung Mobile, it's slow to market and simply doesn't have the full industrial muscle of Sony to take advantage of.

Imagine a Sony Ericsson having the full tech know how of Sony to feed from! The Playstation phone could have been alot different.

Wow! Yet again Sony is 'buying' Ericsson out. This is 2009 all over. I don't see this happening, some Sony fan decided to share his/her fantasy with the tech world.

If it does indeed happen then Sony would've dug its own grave in the mobile phone market.

There has been too much smoke without fire with regard to this same story for me to believe it will be different this time around.

Let's see what happens.

Posted by Bonovox
Indeed

Posted by Bonovox
Well as they are possibly planning the new Nozomi phone aswell as others so maybe not.

Posted by adsada
I've made this point before, but I believe the majority of people who own SE handsets do not realise it's a joint venture but rather just that ericsson is the sub brand of sony that produce mobiles, like vaio, handy cam etc. becuase everyone knows sony, but ericsson obviously isn't as well known.

Posted by jack00
the sources seem legit (buisnessweek,reuters...), we can only hope that ericsson is resurrecting fast
it really makes sense for sony to rethink their joint-venture
10 years - and it didn't work out - time to stop it
sony has proven that they make better android hardware

Posted by Bonovox
Past 2 days I have kept trying the Sony Ericsson shop website but it always seems down Hope that's not a sign

Posted by djin
Well atleast where I live, people do know that sony ericsson is sony ericsson and not sony's ericsson. Sony on their own were struggling with their mobile business, and ericsson was doing good until they had that incident creating shortages of their supplies..

All in all, I am sure if this was supposed to happen, then it would a week ago.. Otherwise, it would just be a big bad surprise, just like todays news.. R.I.P Steve Jobs ..

Yeah sony tablets are not technologically ahead of competition but everyone who reviewed them, talked about how great the user experience is,and how well integrated sony services are.To my understanding, those two tablets are just a warm-up,for things to come.If sony does one thing right,is upgrading their products with their next iterations. Also, dont forget how amazing vaio laptops are,how amazing cybershots/handycams are,how amazing bravia tvs are.Sony wants to merge all of their hardware to create one strong body, just like apple and samsung have done.If that is achieved, then sony has a high possibility of leading in the future.

Moreover,Sony Ericsson has always been, more Sony than Ericsson.Especially the previous 4 years,Ericsson was completely absent, when it came to bringing technologies into the company.

Oh thanks. I have that bookmarked but I also had bookmarked http://www.se-store.co.uk but it just says not found anymore. As for Sony Ericsson,Ericsson still to my eyes have massive influence on the Xperia designs. I can just see the Ericsson design in them all reminding me of old Ericsson phones a little

@jack00

Such rumours are easily picked up by reputable publications even if they may be complete fabrication. It is the original source that is in question here, ie, those who are said to be close to the story.

@adsada

Who exactly are those 'majority of the people' who don't know Ericsson? Ericsson was the successful cellphone manufacturer between the two parents and was clearly better known as a cellphone company than Sony the cellphone manufacturer.

Posted by djin
@nikos_se,
I agree and disagree, Everyone who has used the arc, would compliment it for its responsiveness, good looks and design and even its ui, just like the tablet S. But its not as big a hit as samsung s 2, becasue its not technologically advanced, just like tablet s. To be fair the S is still in ok because tegra 3 isnt out yet, but within a month or 2 it will be out, so that's the problem here with the S.
