We're talking about the screen, not the panorama capture.

According to Se's site, the neo V also has some sort of 3D display:

Straddle the peaks. Dive into the depths. Make your breathtaking mountain panoramas look, well, breathtaking. Select Sony’s 3D Sweep Panorama and catch the scene. Now amaze your mates and show it on a 3D TV.
No 3D TV? No problem. See your photos come to life on the multi-angle 3D display.

It is actually not a 3D screen, but a technique used by Sony using a 2D screen and the position sensor of a device in order to display the same scene from slightly different angles (called Sweep Multi Angle). The device - so far only Sony cameras, now also Sony Ericsson mobile phones - switches the images depending on the angle it is held. This gives kind of a 3D effect on a 2D display. Sorry, not so easy to explain But I have to say: I was very surprised how well the illusion works...
Demo of this (and more of the 2.3.4 upgrade) to follow soon.

I'd like that to be true, but I am not so sure, pretty sure they had that it is with a completable 3D TV you will be able to look back at your pictures in true 3D?

There will be both modes. The sweep multiple angle mode saves actually two files, one as 3d picture, and one as multi angle picture.

What NEW can be found in ARC-2??
Other than CPU whts new ??Does it have Front CAM??

He couldn't tell me! I couldn't see a front facing cam! I will see him this weekend and hope to get more info/see the device again if he still has it.

It could be a prototype using the Arc case.

Realistically the next SE flagship will need to have at least the current SGS2 specs to compete. We all want 12mp camera, qHD display but I reckon that the next flagship will probably have:

-4.3/4.2 inch screen with higher resolution (still backlit LED);
- Gorilla glass with oleo phobic coating (to stop fingerprints);
-same 8mpx camera in the Arc (albeit with some tweaks, more manual options);
-1.4 dualcore processor;
-1GB of RAM;
-16GB internal memory;
- front facing camera;
- Touch sensitive buttons (they'll remove the physical ones apart from volume, power and camera shutter);
- full 1080p video recording.
- updated SE skinning with more tweaks.

^ and under 9mm thin. I'd like to see a 10MP cam included just because they can.

Posted by admad
Well, there's only one thing SE can do to be back at top. Put xenon flash in the phone, because hardware wise SE will never beat the competition. I mean, we had pretty good phones with xenon flash, why is it so hard to go back to these times I would just love to have phone with xenon flash, I can live with one core, but camera is shitty without proper flash, it may be even 25MP it will still sucks without flash!

Posted by Lollylost100
Flash capacitors are too thick.

Posted by goldenface
I think that is the main thing missing from the 2011 Xperia line up - a proper flash, whether it is Xenon or some other technology.

They are still releasing new heritage phones such as the Live with , perhaps android with Cyber-shot is not far behind.

Posted by rickster2kuk
I think the fear with Xenon is that it would massively eat into battery, also the modules are bigger. Agreed thou, it would be a welcome edition. The Xenon on the C905 was awesome.

I think SE may push more towards Cybershot again, esp after the Exmor R sensor in the Arc, they really, really need to invest more in the camera dept. 8mpx is fine, but we need more options and tweaks (quality settings, colour settings) so we don't just get the default over saturated, compressed photos the Arc produces. I've no doubt that the Arc sensor is very good, but it really is held back by SE's default image processing.

Posted by koss
Sonyericsson 8MP exmor sensor is not that good than you think. Next Iphone will have 8MP SONY image sensor that is different from sonyericsson 8 MP exmor sensor and has different lens. If the sonyericsson sensor 8MP Exmor V1 is ~15-20 $, sony sensor and lens kit for next iphone will cost double,, like ~30-40 $ per module. If you will compare in next mounth Iphone 5 vs Xperia Arc you will see a huge image quality difference between photos of the two phones even if the two sensors cames from same manufacture (sony).

Xperia Arc lens are low quality ones and the image sensor came in the market to fast without much tweaking in sensor arhitecture.
Much better was for sonyericsson if they used in new xperia phones kit sensors from samsung, toshiba or other companies. They failed with xperia 2011 photo quality and camera.

Galaxy s2 image sensor has a huge deparasitating hardware filter.. sony ericsson xperia arc lacks one ....

Even latest generations of korean led flash are 2x. 4x performant than sonyericssson used in xperia 2011 family. And they aproach xenon in lumens.. SONY ERICSSON WAKE UP.. we are all asking to wake up but you're sleepin in your pants... WAKE UP !!!

So tell me what's the difference between sonyericsson xenon and samsung latest high power led flash

Lot of people may be waiting for android phone with xenon flash.. Im waiting for long time... Even motorola developed one but they failed in quality.. We really dont want a thin phone with xenon.. We simply want xenon with good image quality.. I dont call c901 as thicker phone as its considerably thin for a xenon phone.. So if push something from their effort then they can manage to bring some thinner phones..
The android currently lacks xenon phones.. I doubt samsung keeps something under their roof. If so then they will eat the market again.. Then there will b no place for at least can be good in this segment if they bring a cybershot. Walkman is old story since software trickes no longer cheat android users there are plenty of music players available with great functionality.. So its better to undust some old xenon modules.

Posted by razec
if Xenon can't fit on the device why not make it an accessory? I've been waiting for an MXE-60 successor ever since. SE used to have huge portfolio of cool and unique accessories. Sony made NEX series without built in flash and instead add an external module to maintain its size, why SE can't do this is beyond me. also with external flash the product can support multiple devices
[ This Message was edited by: razec on 2011-08-31 02:30 ]

Posted by goldenface
I think because external accessories are not as portable and it's one more thing to remember. The idea of external flash accessories go as far back as the T68, hardly a step forward. What we should be asking is that, if alternative technology is available then why is it not being implemented?

Is there no alternative to Xenon? What about Plasma flash or something else that will give a marked improvement in a slim form? It will be breakthroughs such as this that will make a difference.

Posted by razec
As i've found, the plasma flash found on some japanese phones were nothing but a glorified LED Flash with a little bit stronger luminance but they are still nowhere near the performance of Xenon flashes, the real plasma bulbs were hot and unreliable and they need separate cooling support to prevent overheating. also they are not power efficient

Sony Ericsson C901 with xenon flash 13mm thick
Sony Ericsson Neo without xenon also 13mm thick

So I don't think that thickness is the issue here, besides many people can live with thicker phone, as long as it has this damn xenon. Also power consumption is high only when using the xenon, so it's also not an issue. User can choice whether he wants long battery or not. IMO xenon flash costs much to implement in phone, and there is no big market desire for it, that's why it was abandoned But someone somewhere will hopefully see that xenon flash is a must in any so called camera phone. And I will be very glad to buy that phone, one exception though, it must be android

HTC's cameras have mostly been utter garbage. I'm not too optimistic about this one either, despite the specs.

Maybe SE is also thinking like that. The pride before the fall. Either way, SE is slacking in the camera department. They should make satio2 with android and good specs

With all due respect, HTC's camera performance is terrible and it will take a miracle for them to be leaders in this field.

As for SE, they fell a long time ago. SE lost the camera king crown when Nokia released the N86 and haven't recovered to this day. The Satio wasn't bad but the Pixon 12 dashed its hopes of retaining the lost crown. Now we have the arc being voted the best camera device over the SGSII which puzzles me.

I know EISA have set criteria for their selections but the truth of the matter is that the N8 is the reigning king of camera phones.

I'm pretty certain that SE are working on a monster camera phone but the question is are they going to use the best Sony camera on it or go for the cheap stuff.

Sony Ericsson announces Xperia Arc S at IFA, coming in October

Sony took to the stage at IFA 2011 to unveil its latest handset, the Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc S. The super-slim device just got a few bumps in features, including a 1.4GHz CPU, a "Reality Display," and the ability to take both 2D and 3D panoramic images.

Every year we seem to be looking forward to next year I hope they can release something mind-blowing before I'm too old and decrepit to use a mobile phone.

Let's hope they will announce something in Q4 this year that will be available in Q1 next.

Only hope for sonyericsson is that SONY to buy ericsson share in the joint-venture. If sony don't do that... This brand will perish in 2012, or will be in the "others" area.

You are painting a very sad picture of yourself.

I have a feeling they will come to the party this time around, of course, that is assuming they make a decent profit in the next two quarters. Let's be honest, their phones this year were really decent, it is just that the competition was a tiny bit better in the processors.

I can see something amazing around next year. I would, however, prefer that they announce it at MWC for release the next month (March) than for them to commit the same mistake of giving the competition a chance to respond. For a change let it be the competition (if it happens that way) that announces great products and SE thumps them with their own announcement afterwards.

Lol did we see the same press conference? Sony is dying slowly. Nothing new or exciting. They are betting everything on 3d it seems, which will prove to be a bad move (because it sucks). New services which no one will use etc.

Their tablets suck and are expensive. They wont sell. I always buy vaio laptops but now nothing they have interests me. The new samsung laptops look amazing and the only cost 999, using brushed metal. Wish sony would do something like that without charging 2k for it.

Well 2012 is going to be SEs year! 2010 was a changing year, new strategy. 2011 was learning from mistakes and making good phones. 2012 is the year of superphones

Sony will never die, not sure about though. Everyone at work has a Vaio plus, people can never turn away from Sony once they have experienced the quality. Some HTC and Samsung announcements tomorrow, maybe HTC with Beats (I've been waiting for a Walkman for ever and it seems like HTC listened instead) or some Windows Mobile devices. An Xperia X3 would have been nice, Microsoft looks after its own software so only needs to worry about the hardware even if it doesn't have the top specs. Nice design and decent camera are lacking from the current Windows phones, so why not give it a go?

Posted by goldenface
I think it's quite obvious that SE is moving closer to Sony than ever, especially looking at the new Sony reader and the inclusion of Android in upcoming devices.

Posted by Platia1
Considering Nozomi is meant to be out soon, surely there will be an announcement soon (unless the Arc S is Nozomi and the 4.3" 720p screen has been false)

Also, the Walkman UI on that player is far superior to the Music Player on these Xperia devices. I do wonder if Sony took control of Sony Ericsson, would they have a more consistent UI experience?

I have wondered, with more Sony technologies appearing on SE devices, and SE devices appearing at Sony conferences, are they are slowly integrating them back into the company, and preparing to drop Ericsson?

Interesting times ahead.

Posted by Ricky D
I think Sony can see what most in the tech industry can see, which is that in 5 years or less mobile computing, mobile entertainment and mobile phones are going to converge. In this situation Sony will start to have a massive conflict of interests, where when SE formed mobile phones were not interfering with Sony's other business now there are overlaps all over the place and Sony are having to hold SE back to save their own interests, prime examples are Xperia Play getting lower than expected specs in favour of the PSP, the lack of an all killer walkman and the refusal to let SE develop tablets.

The natural progression is for Sony to either sell their part of SE to Ericsson (or a third party), SE drop Sony from it's name and to go back to producing it's own handsets OR for Sony to buy Ericsson's share (or buy Ericsson) and bring it under the big umbrella.

The problem is Sony can't afford to out of the mobile market completely (as I believe in coming years the mobile device market will be about 5 times bigger than it is today), they probably aren't set up to go into their own phone manufacture immediately (so can't sell their SE share and get on with it imminently) and SE is a mess (so why buy Ericsson's part).

I think of these options actually the best option is to let SE die and during it's (maybe not so) long and drawn out death prepare to go it alone in mobile phones and hybrid devices. I think SE can see its end, it's got a maximum shelf life of a few years even if it started producing killer handsets and taking back market share. Sony and Sony Ericsson simply cannot both fulfil as much of the market as they want without being in each others' way. It was different when SE formed mobiles were mobiles, they didn't even have cameras, they were telephones without a curly cable, nowadays they're media devices, computers, cameras and sat-navs, everything Sony should have as their own and didn't think SE would take from them.

@RickyD

I like your analysis except I think that either Sony or Ericsson WILL NOT make it on their own should they let SE die. The sad part is that Samsung and Apple are already so entrenched in this market that they are practically 'stealing' customers from everybody. Then there's HTC who are doing very well and look set to be part of the big three.

Now, how long will it take for Sony to get back in the game alone when you consider that Sony itself is bleeding badly. I have a feeling Ericsson will not get back in there on their own since the mobile division makes up around 10 percent of their business. They can leave off their patents while carrying on with business as usual.

Let's face it, Motorola are doomed already, LG is following in the same footsteps and SE is on the edge of that very same cliff. Nokia is a mystery at this stage but are not far behind SE and Blackberry are just behind Nokia.

The are only three manufacturers in it at this stage, ie, Samsung, Apple and HTC.

I like SE before any of them and should they die then Blackberry it is but should they also fail then there is only one choice for me and that is sadly Apple even though I'm uncomfortable with their way of doing things.

The two parents have no shot in hell if they go their separate ways! Sony needs to get off their high horse and let SE compete with all it has. There are positives to be gained from that in the long term.
