Looks like 3.3 imo. If google translated it right, the author thought around 3. SE would be stupid to make it 3.7

Posted by tyko
I dont see the point in SEs strategy. Why release three different phones with the same hardware (arc, neo and this)? Maybe they should focus more on keeping up with the rest of the manufacters instead.

Posted by mustafabay
Actually I like them sticking with one chip or one SoC if you may, and a pretty good one, and just releasing tonnes of size variations. Saves cost on software development and updates are easier. And you can chose your phone based on the size and amount of money you want to pay. Good thing there isn't a 3.3"pro version or else I'd be torn between it and the mini pro.

Posted by Shino03
I thought it was a midrange, x8 successor. Anyway, it will sell well if the pricing is right that is less than the price of the competitors. But by today's standards, I think this is at best a mid-high phone just like the Neo.

Yes, I like it. . Cool

Screen size - seems to be 3.3 inch wide
below image is xperia mini which is 3.0 inch

Posted by goldenface
The size of the Xperia log and the icons suggest the screen is below 4". It looks like a slim and compact X10.

Posted by Karun
It probably is the X8 successor Eldar wrote about. Looks nice!

Posted by io_bg
I think it's a smaller version of Arc. Anyway, it's nice to have wide variety of sizes

Is this the one we saw above ?

Sony Ericsson Xperia Pro now available for pre-order in the UK

Posted by goldenface
No, that phone was announced a while ago. The Mini Pro is more recent.

From IT168:

ST18i -
Screen: 3.3" 480x854 pixels, multitouch, Bravia engine
Android: 2.3.3
Internal: 1gb
RAM: 512mb
Camera: 8mp Exmor R
Size: 111 x 53 x 9.4mm
Weight: 100g approx
CPU: MSM8255 1ghz Snapdragon
Networks: WCDMA 900/2100, GSM Quad-band

Deal-breaker for me: Possibly no camera button!

Posted by goldenface
Thanks for those specs. Just like I imagined, quite small and slim.

Posted by tranced
...and powerful!

@FMW300i: the dot at the left upper side looks like a front camera. Or it's a light sensor?

Posted by FMW300
Camera I believe. I think they mentioned announcement this month also, not too sure....

What a shame

It depend on XPERIA neo still in pipeline for mass production or not, if not and put this ST18 up instead it will be okay

If neo still on and also have this one up as well, I don't understand why they will have to duplicate such a thing
with all same techs & hardware just different screen size from 3 < 3.3 < 3.7 < 4.2
it shouldn't have much differentiate in the market when available

it probably better if ST18 come up in latter part of this year with MSM8255T w/ 3.5" in upper end segment, to keep themselves up in this competitive market.

As for camera button, it must have for unless they just another following Apple's trend

Xperia Play with HDMI out spotted

Does that plaque say "PLAY 2" ??

Posted by goldenface
Mmm. Possibly. 'Or Play It' (I'm hoping it's Play II).

Posted by aamwng
This could really be the play2. Look carfully at where the "usb" connects to on the phone. The play1's usb port is not that far left.

I don't know, that could just be me.

Sony Ericsson ST18i Urushi leaks again,

The Urushi’s display is a 3.2-inch display with the whopping resolution of 854x480 pixels and the proprietary Bravia Mobile engine. The phone runs Android 2.3.3 Gingerbread with the typical Sony Ericsson customizations and has the same camera as the Xperia Arc - an 8 megapixel snapper with 720p recording and a LED flash.
The handset is supposed to launch in September. We guess the official announcement should happen soon.

The phone that is being used by the standing-up guy doesn't look like an XPlay to me.

Posted by aamwng
According to engadget, that is the developer unit...

ST18i looks really nice, great size. But the Neo has the camera lens in the middle, out of the way of fingers, and of course a physical button to operate it. Would have been great if the ST18i followed suit. Certainly having no button is a bit of a drawback - wouldn't that be the first Xperia phone to do without ? Anyway, wonder when it will be out, pricing etc. Neo is just about to get released in the UK, so could be some way off.

Posted by rikken
This might be a good year for SE with the Arc,Neo/pro,xperia mini/pro,play and ST18i And who knows maybe another high-end device at the end of the year.

Play also doesn't have a camera shutter button.

This phone is really stylish! And it's so slim... It just looks lika a dream, especially in the hands of a beautiful woman...

Why does always have at least one MAJOR flaw in their phones?
Last year was with all their X10 family handsets having android 1.6, the X8 also, with no autofocus/flash, no front camera in Arc, Yendo operates in slow-motion....
I know they have vastly improved this year, but come on, no camera shutter key in ST18i??? Even the low-end walkman W302 has one!!

Posted by hihihans
Why do you want a key? Ain't touch-focus much better?

Posted by Alihosny
i have been doing the math and judging by the 3.5mm photo(on gsmarena) it may be in the 10-12 mm thickness.

but september is too far and knowing sony ericsson , i bet it will be october. Damn SE i have decided finally to get the mini pro and now you are turning my head again.

It looks like the ST18i will not have HDMI out like the Neo and smaller screen so that would not put it in competition with Neo and since its bigger then Xperia mini in terms of screen I think it should be priced around Xperia mini pro or a bit higher

For some uses I guess touch-focus is great. But I have a friend who has an iPhone, and he finds the lack of a hardware shutter key annoying because it's hard to hold the phone really steady whilst using the screen to take the picture. The fact his finger naturally falls on one of the buttons on the edge of the phone, but this button isn't used for taking a picture even in camera mode adds insult to injury ! Not actually having a touchscreen phone I can't comment from experience, but it sounds plausible to me, after all cameras always have a hardware shutter button. It's not the end of the world, as phones take so-so pictures anyway, but it seems an odd omission when lots of SE phones have such a button.

A vaguely related question I have is why don't any of the Android phones have a proper flash ? SE used to have a flash rather than use LCDs on some of their older phones, is there something fundamental about Android that makes this difficult to do ? I can't imagine what. It would be a nice differentiating factor for SE, as no-one else seems to do it either.

I really, REALLY miss the shutter button on the Play. It's much harder to take self portrait pics and touching the screen to take a pic just creates more blur. Two hands is much more stable.

Here are some photos taken with the ST18i:

It depends. I rarely find the touch focus better than the normal way of taking pics. With the hardware shutter key you don't always have to take a pic after focusing. But without such a key you'll always have to take it even if you saw that the phone hasn't focused properly. And, as it was said earlier, taking pictures with a shutter key gives you more stability.

It has to be a secondary camera. I've never seen such a big light sensor

Gsmarena says its pretty decent, so good enough for me. Although the lack of a decent Walkman player and older android version hurts its chances.

I contacted SE and they said " We wont update W8 atm. We are looking to provide the best Android experience with 2.1"
