@zub what's your problem dude? a few weeks ago you were saying Play is the phone you've waited for for years and now you don't want to pay for it? Play is a unique device. No other handset on the market has dedicated controls. That's what you're paying for. I think Play will be a big hit and I really don't think £500 is too much to pay for a device that I would use for all my mobile computing, communication AND gaming. I think it's absolutely reasonable for the first and only of it's kind in the market to charge a premium for it. Hell I think £600 wouldn't be too far of a stretch and I don't even like the handset.

There have been a lot of complaints here about the lack of SE dual-core. But I found the following tidbits yesterday and today:
1) Neither Android 2.2 nor 2.3 are optimized for dual core. It's my understanding that the OS kernel plus the Dalvik JVM will only run in the first CPU, regardless of how many processors you have. I guess an app can run in the other. But it really puts in question e.g. LG's 2x which comes with 2.2 and will be upgraded to 2.3. What's the point ? They need to upgrade to 2.4 to get the max benefits of dual core.
2) Look at this benchmark:
http://www.engadget.com/2011/[....]-pulls-ahead-of-exynos-and-te/
The single core Nexus S is just 18% slower than the LG 2x!

Let me show you guys a comparison between Tegra 2 /OMAP4 / Exynos and the MSM8255 processor that is used in Xperia Arc/NEo/Play/Pro
1. SunSpider Javascript Benchmark -
OMAP 4 - 20% faster
Exynos - 14% faster
Tegra 2 - 12% faster
2. Rightware Browsermark
OMAP 4 - 32% faster
Exynos - 29% faster
Tegra 2 - 33% faster
3. GL Benchmark 2.0 Egypt
OMAP 4 - 48% faster
Exynos - 1 % slower
Tegra 2 - 36% faster
4. GL Benchmark 2.0 Pro
OMAP 4 - 55% faster
Exynos - 49% faster
Tegra 2 - 51% faster
Mind you this is with pre release firmware in the dual core phones and all except Galaxy S II running Froyo. The difference will only increase with better software.
And the Single core phone I have taken for reference is HTC mytouch 4G which performs better than Arc/Neo/Pro/Play. So compared with the Xperia phones the difference will be greater.
@Indiandawg
Refer the above for the comparison.
And what pmugghc meant was the OS will not benefit greatly with dual core processors, and hence we do not see Android being significantly faster on the dual core devices that have come out so far. Its only applications and games that can utilize the additional core of the CPU and hence the better performance in benchmarks and under heavy multi tasking.

Loving a particular brand/device does not mean you ignore FACTS. my touch 4g has 768mb of RAM compared to 512 mb ram on Xperia phones and is the fastest single core Qualcomm device.
My touch 4g basically has the same hardware as Desire HD and Xperia arc does not perform as well as the DHD. Go check any website out there.
And part of the reason why Arc and company don't perform as well is because
software is not as well optimized as HTC's .[ This Message was edited by: avmaxfan on 2011-02-16 08:11 ]

Avmaxfan- From an insider to a philosopher and then to a tech expert. Do you even realise that the RAM doesnt matter? any ram free in your phone is unused ram. Have you touched the arc ever? I think you should take a break and out of this forum too.

Dolby Digital Plus coming to Sony Ericsson phones
Dolby Digital Plus, the impressive sound enhancement technology from Dolby, is set to make its way to LG, Samsung and Sony Ericsson handsets later this year.
These include 7:1 surround sound, 2:1 stereo and mono, switching seamlessly in real time if you need to unplug your TV and plug in your headphones, for example.

My Desire has some sort of Dolby music chip and it does nothing, Winamp makes a bigger difference. I guess it will count for phones that have good external speakers perhaps. Is it a chip or software?

@avmaxfan
What is the point of claiming that a proto is slow when it is still in its testing phase? Come on, you are being really silly now. Wait till the Arc or Play are released and then make an informed and valid deduction.
@all
Some of you know how much I bashed SE when they were screwing up. I bashed the X10 for being half-baked and lamented the fact that SE promised to use Android from version 2. I used to criticise them for the lack of smartphones back in 2007, for their copy and paste strategy and for their lack of being able to react to the markets in time.
They deserved every bit of my criticism. What happened ever since is they have moved forth positively. 2009 was the beginning which was really tough with the restructuring and concentrating on the smartphone market. Poor software implementation (old versions of Android) hampered their progress a bit but the devices were quite good and competitive.
This year they are clearly in a much better position, their new portfolio is quite good and up-to-date. Sure, it is not dual core equipped but the software optimization on the Arc is impressive for a proto, besides, it is not SE's fault that Qualcomm delayed its dual core processors. This bodes well for the rest of the year. Around Q3/Q4 we will see SE asserting itself and pushing the competition hard. They needed to sort everything within and they did so now they can really take the lead in innovation and bring us cutting-edge and technologically advanced devices. I see that happening in the second half of the year.
This whinging and whining like little kids doesn't help anyone but spoils this thread. Like it is often pointed out, if you don't like then don't buy- nobody is forcing you. If you feel SE are behind the competition then get the competition and stop calling people 'deluded and fanboys', after all, it's their prerogative whether they spend money on SE or any other manufacturer.
Criticism is good but it should be reasonable and not childish. I am looking forward to the rest of this year to see what SE will come up with, I haven't been this positive about SE in three and a half years.

Excellent! So it looks like the Arc that was doing the rounds featuring Android 2.4 might have been and intentional leak afterall.
So, the only benefits of 2.4 are it being able to run Apps optimised for dual core phones is that right? Is that the only benefit?

Is it just me who thinks that Sony ericsson is just joking when they said that they're aiming to be the number one android manufacturer because I don't see that they will. Both Samsung and Lg and even motorola are flooding the market with entry-level android phones like the Samsung Galaxy Ace or HTC wildfire S.
SE's new phones are all high-end(the neo is almost a high-end one) and for all I know, if they want more sales, they should also have available midrange phones; but sadly, no sign of any X8 upgrade. I was at least expecting of the mini successor on MWC but I got dissapointed that there was none. I think if they'll release their entry-level phones in Q3, it will be too late for them besides the old minis and x8 are too outdated and inferior compared to what others are offering for Q2. I don't think that it's too hard for them to make at least one midrange phone considering that they've made phones like the play and arc. Two entry-level phones will be enough or one. Just look at Lg optimus gt502. It doesn't have great features but it had provided what consumers needed which would explain its success.

There is an interview I posted in which Bert Nordberg stated that they will double the amount of Android devices available this year. Plus last year, they were easily the No1 Android vendor in Western Europe but they have recognised that their big weakness is the US market.
Their strategy is to break into the US big time, hence the high impact Xperia Play advert during the Superbowl, which must have cost a fortune. Things are off to a good start with Verizon taking up the Xperia Play - European manufacturers have traditionally found it hard to have their premium phones taken up by US carriers.
They are also the largest Android seller in Japan so all in all, if all goes well, they could well be the largest Android vendor by the end of this year.

I don't believe a word of that! I see the Dutch sales figures every week and SE isn't even close to being as big as HTC or Samsung as a smartphone vendor (and most of their sales come from Android devices). Or even worse: Samsung sells more than twice as much Galaxy Ss every week in The Netherlands than SE sells devices every week. Our market is havily sponsored by operators, so the Galaxy S sells way better here than in some other Western European countries, but I can't see the difference being that big (The Netherlands is actually a pretty good market for SE) that SE is indeed easily No1 Android vendor in Western Europe....

Well he actually says No 1 Android player, could that be interpreted as something else?
"Nordberg: Yes, in the world. Last year, in nine months, we took 14 percent market share in Android worldwide. And we only had four devices. It could have been better. But I'd say that's not a bad start. We are definitely the No. 1 Android player in Western Europe. But we can't be No. 1 in the world without the U.S. We need to get into the U.S. market. And we think we need 25 percent of the market to be No. 1 in the world. We are already No. 1 in Japan and Sweden."

Finally, we've got themes too. One of the things, which I've hated about SE android phones was the lack of themes. Now we only need a good camera with xenon flash, and a good media/file manager, for a reasonable price (for me it would be definetly below 400 euro)...
I hope we will get a good themes creator too, not just the preinstalled themes, this was always a strenght of SE.

Considering what "ordinary" people look for(for most that is design and screen size) when they buy a phone, i think SE has managed quite well this time around. Sure, they lack a smaller alternative but that is on its way. About the hardware part, maybe Bert knows that a phone with a sleek design, good screen and very good camera at a decent price sells more than a dual-core device that still lacks software support. Have it ever occured to all of you who trash the hardware that for the common person, it's not that important? And the LTE/4G thing, here in Sweden it's not that widely supported yet and were in the forefront. So why rush?
I think SE is on a streak here, I bet dual-core is well on the way and will hit the market when the market is ready.

HE is not joking. He is the leader of a company. Do you think his boss or the parent who own SE will like to hear a CEO telling the public " Oh well we will just want to make sure we don't lost money" " We only want to be no2" or other statement that don't see to keep the buzz and momentum?
everyone will try to be number1 but how they execute the method will determine whether it hit that target. As you see, SE did that before when they try to be the number one music phone maker and camera phone (dedicated) maker .... but they don't execute something that keep their momentum so eventually everything fall apart.
