From www.nyteknik.se , some interesting facts about Ericssons journey and the future of Sony Ericsson

The trip by Ericsson mobiles
Today, not many people are aware that the all-Swedish telecommunications company Ericsson to just 14 years ago was the world's largest mobile manufacturer.
Then, Ericsson had a huge success with its small, handy mobiles in significant square design.
Ericsson had already in the early 1990s has taken the lead away from the awkward first and second generation mobile phones which was never an option for ordinary people.
Although the antenna sticking out and tore the lining of the bags and jackets and the display was just black and white and one-line, but what did it. It was a cell phone that you could have with you everywhere.
Ericsson managed early in the 1990's come down to sizes smaller than 130 mm high, 50 millimeters wide, 30 millimeters thick and weighing under 200 grams.
The first small Ericsson Mobile phones were all completely incomprehensible letter and number combinations that GH 172, GF 337, GA 318 and TH 337th
In 1996 Ericsson launched the CM 688 was shown the world that it was possible to produce really small cell phones.
GH 688 was only 130 x 49 x 23 millimeters and weighing not more than 160 grams.
It was the world's smallest mobile phone and a year later, Ericsson had overtaken the U.S. Motorola as the world's largest mobile manufacturer.
But then also began to Ericsson's journey out of the mobile device world.
It was Nokia, which made the world look at mobile phones with new eyes and a kind, Ericsson's strict, black design and is completely absent.
Nokia mobiles were as accessories. They were rounder, imaginatively designed and you could even change the covers on them to match the phone with my clothes.
Ericsson was pushed pretty soon down from first place to second, third, and fourth, the fifth and finally, to sixth place in just over ten years.
- 2001 I was alone in its class to have an Ericsson mobile. I had an A1018 that I bought cheaply. Everyone else in class had the cooler Nokia Mobile Phones 3210 and 3310, "said a young colleague at New Technique editorial.
Ericsson made valiant attempts to capture the audience with increasingly less mobile, and above all with the characteristic Ericsson lid over the keyboard.
The small, nicely arched T10 in different colors with fold-down flap became a bestseller in a short time.
It was followed eventually by the tiny and super-slim T28-ball with his characteristic broad fat antenna.
T28-ball and its siblings, especially the popular T39s which had four-line text box instead of three, was not more than 94 mm high, 45 millimeters wide, 15 millimeters thick and weighing just 83 grams.
T28-ball became a cult mobile already when it was launched - an ominous sign that Ericsson was wrong.
In addition, the cover over the keyboard a design flop. The cost is simply too much to manufacture. In addition, it malfunctioned and caused a lot of costly claims.
Neither cult mobile phone "Jaws", the waterproof and shockproof R310 with its soft antenna, became a bestseller.
Ericsson took the drastic decision to close the mobile manufacturing in-house and set up a 50-50 company, together with Japan's Sony, which was assumed to be more responsive to consumer market.
But before the new company, Sony Ericsson was launched in 2001, Ericsson launched a new feature that struck the audience - Ericsson T68, a Nokia mobile Similar with large color display and a processor capable of data transfer with GPRS speeds.
Sony Ericsson took the T68 design from Ericsson, but never got to market with them. None of the Sony Ericsson phones stuck out enough to reverse the downward trend.
The then Head of Ericsson Kurt Hellström roared when even said that if Sony Ericsson could make mobile phones into the market wanted, it would all support for Sony Ericsson withdrawn.
Designer Erik Ahlgren received the heavy responsibility to develop a brand new Sony Ericsson mobile. And he succeeded!
In spring 2003 launch camera phone T610, nicely designed in a classic square Ericsson Cut and packed with technical features.
T610 was chosen as the year's best mobile at Mobile World Congress in Cannes in March 2004 and Erik Ahlgren got one year on major Design in Sweden.
They took revenge by Ericsson and Sony Ericsson started a formidable comeback with a focus on camera phones and music phones.
Ericsson built the giblets and Sony Ericsson designed and packaged. Sony Ericsson led the hunt for more and more pixels in the built-in digital cameras and launch of Sony's old mark of its Walkman music phones.
T610 was the start of a formidable Sony Ericsson hysteria in Sweden.
While the global market share stood at 6-7 percent, Sony Ericsson over 40 percent of the mobile market in Sweden, almost double that of world number one Nokia.
In the 1990s, launched the Ericsson fewer than 50 new models.
In Sony Ericsson's first decade was launched over 100 new models.
"
The article, is really about Sony Ericsson's need of Google to succeed. If android gets outdated, as all other OS's has, Sony Ericsson will possible go under...
What do you think?

I think the SE phones Xperia Arc and Play are awesome devices. And it seems that Halloon will be, as well. But SE need an ultra high-end device to wrap up this year's line up: the rumoured smartphone with 16.43 megapixel camera with Exmor R sensor Xenon and LED flashes and Full HD video recording. This top-end device should have ST Ericsson U8500 1.2ghz dual-core processor with Mali 400 GPU, 1gb of RAM, 1gb ROM and 32 GB internal memory. The Quad band GSM/HSDPA and HSPA+ up to 21mbps support should not be forgotten. Plus, an 4.0"-4.2" XGA multi-touch screen with an "improved" (better viewing angles, brightness and color reproduction) Reality Display feature should be considered, as well. Of course, the 3.5mm socket, stereo speaker/s, dual stereo mics with noise cancellation, Front cam, GPS with a-GPS, Bluetooth 3.0/4.0, microUSB, microHDMI, Wi-fi b/g/n, microSIM and microSD card slot should be included for pete's sake. The design should be slim, exqusite and elegant looking accentuated by high-quality materials. SE should also put in mind the gyroscope, accelometer and NFC. Last but not the least, it should be running the latest version of Android with SE UXP layer skin.
Why exactly do SE need a device with these specifications? If you have not heard yet, Apple A5 chip seems to be real powerful according to AppleInsider.com. Plus, we don't know exactly yet what else is in the next iPhone. It is not hard to predict that the next iPhone will be as successful or even more as the iPhone 4. So if SE wants to get some share in the US, a phone with the specs above should be made by SE and release it on the time when Apple iPhone 5 gets announced. I'm sure this SE device will snatch the spotlight from the iPhone 5.

I have a suggestion. Why don't we start guessing Halon specs?
16mp camera
android 2.3
full hd recording
512mb memory
zenon and led flash
4.1 inch screen
p.s - this is assuming its the flagship
Posted by Ravager
Nah, Hallon, translates Raspberry is probably the successor of X10 mini. The flagship is Arc, hope I'm wrong. And even if it is, it probably will not have a 16 mp camera, more likely 12, because Sony Ericsson has released a 12 mp phone in japan.

I dont get it? It has the same specs as arc? From what I read it has bravia, exmor, hdmi

The design is strange but I like it.
If eldar like it then it is going to be as good as the vivaz, but SE is a bit silly to release this one with a front facing camera and not the arc. I mean the flagship should be the most advance phone but arc and hallon seems to be equal.
Well still the MWC is coming for a 2nd half flagship maybe and the last phones to be officialy anounces.

this is the new strategy of the sony ericsson same specs for lower price.

but both are going to be shipped at the same time so that's silly, it's not like the arc has dualcore or/and 16mpx full hd, doesn't even have a front facing camera while the cheaper hallon will get one !!!
Nothing like N8-C7 combo from nokia, and don't forget the xperia play.
Posted by ardian
i understand u, but most of the peoples dont use video call, and if someone who dont use video call will buy arc because of the design, for those who use video call is the hallon, same specs lower pirce and they will choose
products. the front cam of the hallon will be more than video call... and the hallon is first of many new cell phones with "big" front cam..
Posted by pavlov's_dog
it's unfair to compare hallon's screen with the galaxy's at such a horrible angle. of course, it would look terrible.
Posted by puestadelsol
I've just read the Halon review. It's a nice phone, but I wouldn't buy it. For now I have a C901. The C905 is outdated too, but is functionality in a new phone would be sufficient for a best seller. The Vivaz doesn't have Xenon flash, and it has just resistive display. And the Satio -despite the fact that it's price has gone down- has also just a resistive screen, it's a little bit outdated too, it isn't that responsive, but it's specifications would be enogh for a best seller phone.
I know that Sony Ericcson, and all other manufacturers try to compete with the IPhone. They have no chance. The new touchscreen phones try to copy in a way the logic of the user interface of the IPhone, because for now it proved to be the simpliest to use touchscreen phone. Honestly I see that is really easy to handle the IPhone, it has a simple logic, but I don't like it. I don't like that all the functions, applications, and in fact everything is bulk in one place. All the manufacturers are trying to copy this logic, but they would be able invent some smart solutions. If they trying to copy it, not to elaborate something original, they never overtake the Iphone in terms of UI.
On the other hand, the IPhone isn't just a phone, it's a symbol. It's telling: "Look, I (also) have IPhone! I am able to spend 1000 euro for a phone, the only iportant thing is that it have the Apple symbol on it's back, and I don't care about it's functions."
Other manufacturers can increase their phone's prices, but never will achieve the effects of the IPhone.
Sony Ericsson's biggest strenght was that their phones had much better price/value ratio than any of the competitors. For the past 3 years it that's not true. The X10, Arc, even the Hallon are very high end devices. They aren't adressed for mass users, they remind me to the S700 or W900, but at that time the K700 and K750 or W800 were the best sellers.
Many of you are expecting that Google, and Anroid are the only chance for SE to survive. I think that in this domain Samsung does the right job, by releasing the Bada OS. The Sony Ericsson managed to create a simple UI for Symbian with the UIQ, on the top of it would have been the UIQ 3.3, which was released never.
In 2004-2005 the K700 and K750 had a complex, but simple UI. At that time the competitors didn't have any phone with such rich functionality, with such a simple UI at the same time. Ever since SE's proprietary OS's UI didn't change too much. That was a mistake, becuase by the time the competitors took over many ideas from SE's UI.
It's a big mistake that SE haven't tried to create a good touch UI in time. In my opinion they still should think about the creation of a Proprietary OS, because they could create a good, performant pleasant looking UI, which would be easy to use. The personalisation of Andriod is good idea too, but they should implement more features from their previous phones.
Some of you are waiting 16 mp cameraphones... I don't know why. Even a normal digital camera doesn't have, and they even don't need that high resolution.
Just imagine a best seller phone for 250-300 euro, but below 350 euro anyway. It could use Android or whatever, just to have:
-A good, simple, logical and fast UI. With more possibilities of personalisation, and themes.
-A performant file manager (Like in A200 or S60(?) phones). (Maybe better media manager.)
-A good camera with max 8 or 12 MP, and Xenon flash, good picture quality (like the C901), and image stabiliser. HD video recording (or at least VGA with continuous, smooth recording).
-A sharp screen (for that price a 320*480 resolution would be enough)
-A good headset.
-Wifi of course, and some social networking functions (the latter isn't that important).
-Capacitive touchscreen (of course).
-A stunning design, not heavier than 110 g, and not thicker than 15 mm.
I don't know which of the folliwing phones would you choose??? Or rather which of these would be bought by more people???
-This imaginary one for about 300 euro;
-Or the Arc, for 550 euro, which don't have many more features then the letter.
-Or the phone some of you are dreaming of, with 16 MP camera (and probably a low image quality), for a really high price (600+ euro), with not much more useful features compared to that possible best seller, I described.
Sony Ericcson would have to release cheap touchscreen phones (but better than Yendo, however that idea is good). And some "ordinary" but interesnting phones too with some improvements, because they have a good base what to improve.
A C901 (touch or non-touch) succesor, or at least a good cameraphone with Xenon flash...

^ as far I can see the difference is the sexy looks and screen size. And MT15i has a big front facing cam.
Everything else is the same, same processor, same screen tech, same camera module..
I'm probably going to buy arc then regret it instantly for not being able to video call through skype or gtalk.

So hallon pretty much have the same specs as the arc besides the screen size, plus you get the front facing camera. So why is it cheaper then? I could have understand if it had come without bravia screen and Exmor camera but now... I dont complain as this looks like a better device than the arc if all is true, and is cheaper.

Is it just me or that new Vivaz looks ugly?
The screen is much bigger than the original Vivaz and the volume rocker is strangely positioned in the middle of the right side... Hopefully they've put a bigger loudspeaker and a better camera module.
Posted by goldenface
I was right about the enhanced video-calling, from MR:
"The front facing camera is present here as well and we must say that despite its rather large size it turns out to be an improved module compared to most phones and can at least offer acceptable results."
Don't know what he means by saying 'despite' the module's large size. Large camera modules normally mean better optics, correct me if I'm wrong.
Posted by KU
front is ugly but sides and back is awersome. Maybe SE strategie is play, make visual call or be fashionable. Still a weird strategy, phones are good but still behind the concurrence which is really important for phone marketing.

I think he means than on the one hand having a large camera lens on the front panel is somewhat strange and unaesthetic, but on the other hand it helps in achieving better image and video quality

I thought the arc looked ugly in the MR review, but now its beautiful
I dont understand this part;
"This time around the successor to the QSD82xx platform from X10 is not ready for production. Apart from that Sony Ericsson decided not to use this new chipset in order to lower production costs. Much like in Arc case MSM7630 is used but with the maximum recommended rate of 1GHz instead of 800MHz used in HTC Desire Z for example. "
What does he mean? Is it clocked higher in arc? Not ready for production?

I think he means both Arc and Halllon are running the MSM7630 at 1GHz, as compared to the HTC Desire Z which is running it at 0.8GHz.

Congratulation SE for your 10 years in the game!!!
2011 sounds interesting, and I for the name of hallon I bet for duo standing for the dual camera (only android se to have one front and rear). And the Neo could be the fashionable Ericsson contribution to SE.

@TheBeckSF: If the criterion for being a jack ass is to be laughed at, you're doing a fine job of it with your "spics" and "lairs".

I will buy arc purely because it has a bigger screen and looks so much better than hallon.
The front cam would only make up for half of the fact that arc is sexier than a tall slim blonde and a squirty bottle of whipped cream.
