"Must-Have" apps that work on X10 mini / X10 mini pro Thread

Click to view updated thread with images

Posted by Phoner
SonyEricsson X10 mini and X10 mini pro are the smallest Android based devices currently available on the market. Unfortunately the small size comes with the price of lower resolution 320x240 QVGA display. Many Android applications are not compatible with this resolution. The purpose of this thread is to find out which of the android applications are working on X10 mini / X10 mini.

I am sure this thread will be useful for all of us who are searching for X10 minis Android applications.

All who have these phones please advise which applications are working and are "Must-Have" for X10 mini and X10 mini pro Also please describe any problems that you might come across when using the apps on minis.

Thank you.

This will be a very useful thread, thanks

Iīm still waiting my phone to arrive... When you go to android market application, will it eliminate those apps which wonīt work? Or is it just a lucky shot what will work? And yes, this thread is very useful!

Posted by Phoner
It is a lucky shot, that's why I thought this thread might be useful If it gets enough attention and response we could make a list on the first post with all known Mini compatible apps.

Well sort of it is a "lucky shot". Because depending on the developer apps are registered for specific screen resolutions. Now those registered for QVGA will work for sure. But there are many others that are NOT registered correctly (because of developers lazyness etc.) but still work. Those you won't see in the Android Market, but you can still install them manually.

At least that's what I've read so far about this topic. As now there are more Andoid devices with QVGA displays developers might be more aware of this fact.

Most of the applications work on X10, work on X10 mini as well I just installed Zeam Home Launcher, Advanced Task Killer, AK Notepad, aTakephone, Battery indicator Pro, bTunes, Handcent SMS, Cool Texter, Goggles, Trafikanten, Fancy Widgets etc on my brother's X10 mini, all work perfectly

iMap Weather works great. It also indicates lightning strikes (which is great for me). But sadly, now isnīt lightning storm nearby to test it.

Does Opera Mini/Mobile works in x10 mini?

Posted by boy.in.PINK
@pao9195 it should work like charm. It has a beta version for Android.

I have a post here on how to convert Java mobile applications into Android pack. It's through online.

nice but one of the problem of Xperia X10 mini is it's battery is not replaceable

Well - with a bit of mechanical skills IS possible to replace it, the pack seems to be the same size as the one in my Cybook Opus. At least you can access it by removing the back cover - as opposed to the IPhone. But if you want to have a spare battery to exchange during the day etc. then you would have a problem.

Other than that I don't see an issue because of that. Most likely the battery will last long enough that I replace the phone by another new model before the capacity gets bad.

Or you wait for the Mini Pro... But that's over 100 gramm and I want to have my phone to be as light weight as possible.

Opera mini works perfect, have on mine now and does everything fine. Also have Experia flashlight which works just the same as the x10, also fancy widget which works well, sms popup does not work very well, the popup appears when you receive a message, but if you tap reply it wants to create a new message rather than reply to sender. Most apps seem to work that also work on the X10.

how about games? Something like "raging thunder 2" and "zenonia"? Is it playable and can you do multitouch with it? (just search in Android Market)

Posted by emzee_ali
Is there an APP for Onscreen QWERTY keyboard on Mini? i remember seeing a video on youtube a week back where an onscreen QWERTY keyboard being demonstrated on Mini.

Posted by volvoman
Search for scandinavian keyboard in the market

Posted by emzee_ali
@volvoman!

It is basically an English Keyboard...rite?

Posted by volvoman
You can have english or any of the scandinavian variants, also you can download various dictionaries as well, very good indeed, have it on both my X10's now.

Posted by Phoner
And if you need to write SMS with the onscreen QWERTY keyboard in horizontal mode, use Handcent sms.

Posted by l6gtv

I was wondering if someone could tell if this on screen keyboard is usable on the small screen (more or less).

It is usable in the web browser, but very hard to use with a default sms writing (it is always vertical, thus making the keys very small). You have to use other app, like handcent sms to use the qwerty horizontally.

Is the horizontal querty keyboard usable? (more or less of course)

@Phoner
hmm .. I don't use any sms apps, and I've by default horizontal and vertical querty keyboard, whenever I flip my phone.

Maybe I am wrong, but I thought the Experia X10 mini didn't had a querty keyboard out of the box.

heh .. my bad, I thought about virtual qerty keyboard

It doesn't. We are talking about Scandinavian keyboard app

Have just seen a series of videos by a guy called KJ from se.

He recommends:

Advanced Task Killer
OI File Manager
Juice Defender

Think the first two have probably been mentioned. Just researched juice defender, its an interesting app that basically has automated processes for killing battery intensive features (3G, WIFI etc). Could be very useful!

FYI, swype doesnt seem to work, think it must be the resolution, google maps navigation is fine, opera mini is fine, handcent is fine, helix launcher seems fine, as are most of the battery apps i tried, remote vnc works great considering the screen size, shape writer works but doesnt look great due to screen shape (they have preview pane in wrong place).

if anyone has any luck getting swype to work i would be v v interested!

Posted by Munchkinn
I think Swype is being updated very soon. A lot of Android sites have stories about it recently.

Hi everybody

A very good keyboard is Anysoftkeyboard, he's free and available on the market. The touch size is higher than with slideit.
But always the same problem for sms just the vertical position.

I tried that, but for some reason the device just doesn't use it. I changed it in the preferences (according to the "manual"), but no effect. Do I miss something here?

to change input method on the x10i you will have to longpress the writefield, and choose keyboard maybe the same on the x10 mini?

I don't like to install too applications on my phone and that's why I find it's stupid to haven't the choice from the beginning. I knew that with handcent you can have landscape mode with the keyboard of your choice, BUT after reading your answer, I decided to test it, just to see, and ... Really THANKS cause it's a very good application and now for me it's a "must have"

Of course !
I've forgot a word in my answer. I just mean that, I prefer install some app which bring me new functions and not just an improvement of what exist. I prefer to have only 4 or 5 apps, that I'm gonna use regularly instead of a lot of them that I'll use just once by month. But in this case, this app give me a real plus, so I keep it, even if for me it's just an improvement.
