Espoo, Finland - The Nokia N8, Nokia's latest smartphone, intuitively connects to the people, places and services that matter most. With the Nokia N8, people can create compelling content, connect to their favorite social networks and enjoy on-demand Web TV programs and Ovi Store apps. Available in select markets during the third quarter of 2010, the estimated retail price of the Nokia N8 is EUR 370, before applicable taxes or subsidies.

The Nokia N8 introduces a 12 megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics, Xenon flash and a large sensor that rivals those found in compact digital cameras. Additionally, the Nokia N8 offers the ability to make HD-quality videos and edit them with an intuitive built-in editing suite. Doubling as a portable entertainment center, people can enjoy HD-quality video with Dolby Digital Plus surround sound by plugging into their home theatre system. The Nokia N8 enables access to Web TV services that deliver programs, news and entertainment from channels like CNN, E! Entertainment, Paramount and National Geographic. Additional local Web TV content is also available from the Ovi Store.

Social networking is second nature to the Nokia N8. People can update their status, share location and photos, and view live feeds from Facebook and Twitter in a single app directly on the home screen. Calendar events from social networks can also be transferred to the device calendar.

The Nokia N8 comes with free global Ovi Maps walk and drive navigation, guiding people to places and points of interest in more than 70 countries worldwide.

Symbian^3 in action
Powering the Nokia N8 is Symbian ^3, the latest edition of the world's most used smartphone software, which introduces several major advances, including support for gestures such as multi touch, flick scrolling and pinch-zoom. The Nokia N8 also offers multiple, personalizable homescreens which can be loaded with apps and widgets. The new 2D and 3D graphics architecture in the platform takes full advantage of the Nokia N8's hardware acceleration to deliver a faster and more responsive user interface. Symbian^3 also raises the bar in performance by delivering greater memory management allowing more applications to run in parallel for a faster multi-tasking experience.

Getting Qt for Developers
The Nokia N8 is Nokia's first device to be integrated with Qt, a software development environment that simplifies the development and makes it possible to build applications once and deploy across Symbian and other software platforms. Nokia has also made the powerful and simple to use Nokia Qt SDK available, in its initial beta, to enable developers to start realizing the potential of Qt.

For once I think they are going the right way with the design.

Posted by Dups!

That's because they stole the design!!!

I bet if they designed by themselves it would be same old boring Nokia.

Posted by goldenface
It does have a whiff of Aino about it - although the black version positively reeks of Aino.

Posted by gola
I feel so sorry for all the Satio owners, ye, me too

Posted by goldenface
Satio will probably be replaced by the time this comes out anyway.

Posted by gola
Knowing SE, I won't get my hopes up in thinking that the Satio successor will top the N8. The chances are very slim, d*mn this is an awesome phone!

Posted by se_dude
Eh? Satio2 is supposed to have optical zoom. After the X10, my faith towards SE has doubly increased. The N8 brings nothing new to the market btw.

Posted by Bonovox
Who cares if it looks slightly similar to another phone. Its what is inside that counts i like this and it has a proper HDMI socket. Something Sony Ericsson forgot on the Vivaz. This ticks all the right boxes. Anyway alot of manufacturers copy each other in one way or another its only the two curved ends that remind you of the Aino. Nothing else.

Posted by Tsepz_GP
LMFAO! Brings nothing new to the market what other mainstream smartphone has a HDMI port with Dolby Digital sound or Symbian^3???
I bet the Satio2 wont have anything new like Gola said.
The design reminds me of the NOKIA E51, a device that came BEFORE the Aino. It looks like a E51 shell with the keyboard removed and a bigger screen put in place. NOKIAs latest designs are all based on other models, N97/Mini took the N86 design, the C6 and quite a few others took the 5800 design,etc...
Anyway,im excited about this one. NOKIA did it properly by making a device that records HD be able to display HD via the HDMI port when using TV-Out,unlike some OTHER manufacturers *cough* SE *cough* Samsung,
Also excited about S^3, and what apps and games it will get since it has Qt it means Maemo/MeeGo apps can be ported to Symbian, and i can just see many N900 apps and games being ported over for N8
Niiiccce.

I pulled a "it brings nothing new" at the Zylo and Spiro thread the other day and well they brought nothing new. I'm afraid that same statement does not go well with the N8, the freaken thing has the largest sensor in the history of camera phones!

Posted by Dups!
@Bonovox

Calm down now, you don't need to get worked up over a light moment between me and goldenface over design!!

There is absolutely nothing wrong with noticing such things. I mean, the Vivaz shares similar design cues with the Omnia HD and you don't hear anyone cry foul. It was just having fun.

@Tsepz_GP
At some point a particular manufacturer will come up with something that others don't have and it's good for competition. HTC have 4G and Wimax in their Evo which others will follow. I think the old SE has died and I do believe 'Satio 2' will not just be another one of those but will compete. Let's just wait and see.

Posted by Bonovox
Dont be silly i was not stressed about what you said i just stated who cares if it looks similar. Thats all not getting stressed over that.

Whatever you say...

Errr..SF is open source. The next symbian phones by SE or samsung should have S^3. This phone is scheduled to be out on the 20th of september. If not SE, I still back Samsung to make a meal out of their next 12mp phone, which shall probably beat a point and shoot camera. Btw,Dolby thing was first introduced by LG in one of their phones. Is a sonic gimmick. You dont expect surround sound from a 2 speaker setup.Do you? HDMI, i believe would be introduced in days to come.Anyways.Come June, SE's flagship announcement. We shall see.For now, feed on the official pictures.

Posted by Tsepz_GP
Se_dude
No no no dude, Dolby Digital will be used in the HDMI port when you playback via you HD TV/Monitor using TV-Out, THAT is a 1st.
The fact is this is the 1st to bring S3, HDMI and HQ surround audio with TV-Out. The SE will take forever to be released as usual ,and i do agree about Samsung, they may have something similar or better out sooner, but who knows eh.

Wow fantastic quality.

Posted by Tsepz_GP
Anyone else notice that it supports 5 3G Bands!!?? Isnt that also something new? . looks like Nokia listened to the NAM users.

Posted by tranced
Indeed. I was surprised with this one. It is really a worldwide phone.

By the way, did you read this: One of our children is missing

Posted by Bonovox
Wow. Well i think Nokia taking their time with this is important and will hopefully pay off should they get it right. Glad they put in a proper flash. I think the N86 was a bit of a non event and again mistakes were made. Terrible design and no proper flash low res screen although picture quality was good. But this N8 I WANT IT.

Posted by goldenface
Five months till this appears on the shelves. There is no doubt it will sell. Nokia needs a hit phone.

However, let's hope they sort out the software, and not subject people to the continuous and constant updates that comes with some S60 phones, Satio included.

Posted by Bonovox
Nokia needs a hit phone? Mmmm their cheaper Symbian devices currently sell out all the time & hit the No.1 spot after a week of release.

Posted by goldenface
I'm talking N95 style hit. Now that was a game changer.

Posted by Tsepz_GP
I think what The One with the Gold face means is that they need a high end hit phone, the N97 was realy a disaster and N900 was more of a Geeks only device, what they needed was a mainstream flagship to takeover where had N95 left off. N95 brought in so many new things, and the N8 is doing the same. By the way it also supports USB OTG, apparently can pull things off an external harddrive without a pc.

@Tsepz_GP

Thanks. That's exactly what I meant.

Posted by vlotnet
Non-removable battery.
No thanks.

Free OVI maps is good in over 70 countries, though. I'll take those.
Resolution of screen pretty poor for this type of device, all things considered.

Lots of 3G bands is nice.
But not much to see here, IMO.

I'd rather use a commodity Symbian S60 phone than be on the bleeding edge with a new Symbian here, with all the new quirks to figure out and resolve - and the insanity of a non-removable battery.

Posted by Tsepz_GP
Ye,im not happy about a non-removeable battery either, but the pros seem to out weigh the cons eg. HDMI, AMOLED screen, HD video, USB OTG, xenon flash etc...
If you've used the N97 you'll know that the 640x360 res screen aint bad at all, fonts look amazing, and so do wallpapers, themes etc...

Posted by norbi_nw
Who cares if the batery cant be removed.... At least i dont. I cant remember the last time i took out my battery for any other reason than changing SIM. And in Romania we have Lifetime warranty for these phones (my satio too), so when battery will get shitty, i will just ship it to theyr service, and they will do the switch. Every phone i had i had it for 1 year, 1 and a half max, then sold and bought a new one.
And someone wanted AMOLED display... why? so you can not see it in the sun?.. anyways AMOLED fades out and has alot of negative points.. google it.

EDIT: only downside so far is the NO CAMERA COVER. :/

On GSMArena's blog they calculated that the N8 has a very large (for being a camphone) image sensor (link) - 1/1.9". That would explain the pretty good samples posted.

With the phone having a brand new OS I wouldn't think of buying it until at least 6-9 months have passed, to give Nokia enough time to fix the millions of bugs it is sure to have. In any case, I wouldn't buy this phone at all, or any other phone from Nokia either after having been very disappointed with two of their latest smartphones (N900 and E72). They really need to shape up to take away the bad rep they have today.

Can't swap battery if I use it too much and it runs out wherever I am.
Can't go for a longer trip without a care.

Replacing it at a service center just for an over-used battery is something I never want to do when something as simple as buying my own battery and replacing it takes an hour at the local shop.

Downtime is far too annoying sending it back, and they might damage your precious phone if I send it to some grubby unknown tech; this has happened to people before (receiving phones in worse condition than they sent them).

+
I like to keep phones for a minimum of 3 years, not 1 - 1.5 years. I still have my PSP after more than 3 years. I am glad it has a removable battery. I don't like disposing goods or changing them often.

Posted by miguel82
This phone will replace my satio for sure if there is still no android phone with a decent audioplayer and a camara with xenon flash! I dont care if there is a lot of bugs in the beggining... it probably will be more usuable than satio is right now! lol. Just 2 questions about S3... Does it have finally smiles and conversation view on sms? and about flash wallpapers?

Posted by Bonovox
Non removable battery well iphone anyone? It's nothing new I just hope Nokia are confident enough that if it freezes & you cannot turn it off then hell your buggered So they are saying the sensor is BIG

This is nice but it looks like it has dodgey buttons downs the sides again,
the X6 has a really shoddy Lock key and it looks as if Nokia have put the same shoddy keys onto this one too,
must be a cost thing or something!

lol and lets hope it comes dust free

Posted by Bonovox
It looks like the phone has the screen quite close to the surface which may mean no dust getting inside like the X6

Posted by Miss UK
yeah maybe but if it has shoddy keys on it the dust will get into the cracks you haven't seen how they have put the X6 together my last handset was put together very bad, large gaps on the USB and On/off switch!

Posted by vlotnet

lol and lets hope it comes dust free

A controversial (but good) reviewer from Russia on the mobile-review site has already commented that dust got in.

Posted by kreacher
I hope the large sensor really delivers and becomes an area of competition amongst the companies. I've been waiting since my K790 for some manufacturer to tout image quality due to larger sensor rather than jacking up MP count.

Posted by jj03
design is fugly. really fugly. worse than the satio's. will keep an eye on thìs, tho, with the omnia hd2 conceivably in the works, i know where my money will be going.

Posted by Luci'sPower
I waited for this type of phone for a long time ......this is the first all around phone (since N82) in the last 2 years that includes everything ..........great move for nokia this will sell like crazy

Posted by badassmam
There is no phone that comes even close to its HD recording quality, its absolutely fantastic. Check it out on youtube.

Posted by jj03
i'll decide about the vid quality when i'm actually able to sample the device myself. until then, i take it with a pinch of salt.

Posted by Dups!
I have to agree with jj03! Some of Nokia's marketing statements are beginning to bother me on this phone.

They claim that this phone 'rivals compact digital cameras' and have posted 'untouched' photos and video recording of the phone. All this sounds just like excessive marketing and advertising in response to Eldar's scathing preview of the phone.

Until it is 'officially' reviewed and used I will take that with a pinch of salt also.

Posted by vlotnet

I wait for official review and at least 1,000 user comments.
And that goes for every manufacturer, not just Nokia

Boring symbian oh my god from year 2000 till now the same interface i hate symbian enough no more what the use of buying a new mobile with a new case while the inside OS is the same from decades !!! strange since 7650 and 3650 and 6600 nothing new in the OS thats killing boring .... so what does it offer more than my PIXON12 ?? the HD video recording ?!!! do i have to sacrifie my strong brilliant amazing pixon12 to old symbian nokia's for HD recording i doubt ......

Posted by whacky
Hi,

Everyone is always naging about symbian, why even SE uses it today (and they have a realy shitty support for that).
Maybe the interface isn't so flashy as android (i like a clean simple interface) but that also means it requiers less processingpower and therefore uses less battery (faster processor= more power consumption).

Beside all that its gonna be a new os that kind of looks the same but no one has seen it working or worked with it so commenting should be done when Symbian^3 is out.

Atleast Nokia is putting in some hardware and software that needs to come with a HD device unlike SE or samsung (VGA tv output and no editing software) and u get free SatNav software.

I like the N8 and cant wait for it to be released and reviewed so i can hopefully get one .

Cheers,

Mark.

well, ive not long read an article about whats new under the hood in symbian 3. And they are quite substantial to say the least. also, a good interview with damian dinning, with regards to the camera and video operations. Interview at gsm arena. Keeping an open mind until i use it myself.
