Whats the benerfit of the custom firmware? , can you play games off the memory card?

You can play "backups", homebrew (custom made apps from others), UMD movies and more from the memory card using custom firmware. Also, you can do much more, like play PS1 games and more.

By the way, these 2000 series PSP's with CFW are really hard to come by now because you could only install it on the REALLY early models.
