i agree with bart here
currently there is no objective reason to buy a sony ericsson
there is a single device out there which shines out of the mass - the X10 MINI

pre paid period ? old paradigms don't work anymore
the money is with smartphones

Yes, the quarter is 'usually' a pre-paid period only if you have something to offer the consumers. What do SE have to offer?

From where I stand an ageing portfolio that they can't even ship enough of and the X8 which is the only phone really that they are hoping will save the day. Q4 is already looking worse than I thought. By Q1 next year HTC will be the number 5 manufacturer with a slightly bigger slice of the market compared to SE.

I still stand by what I mentioned- that SE should've had at least 2 phones that are released now in Q4 to help the X8 and continue their upward (profits) surge.

It is rather disturbing that with the minis they couldn't push their shipments to around 12.5m or even 13m. Considering that situation I see them shipping a little less this quarter or even the same number as in Q3.

Let's be honest here, they don't have a strong portfolio compared to the likes of HTC, Samsung and to an extent Motorola and that is their major problem cause people want very competitive phones. Why is the Galaxy selling so much followed by the Wave? The Desire HD is already in the top 5 while its sibling the Desire is still in demand. With SE it is the X10 that is carrying the torch while the minis faded prematurely.

SE needs to start going all out, take risks and see what happens. I suggest they have a minimum of 2 super high-end phones early next year and add another one in Q4 (released to the market and not only announced) while keeping their mid-end going strong. This thing of one high end per year is what dragged them in this mess in the first place, give the consumers three high-end phones per year and watch the profits rolling in.

It also time for a proper A-platform, 3'', full touch walkman with class leading sound quality. While at it, give the damn P1i replacement in Android. Motorola has one, unfortunately it is for the American market- at least for now.

I see a weak Q4 result and a bad Q1, 2010 result. Less profits for Q4 and terrible profits for Q1 next year.

As much as I agree with you, goldenface, regarding the transition period that SE is in bad business decisions and strategy are also to blame here. SE cannot afford to sit back but need to go all out.

Maybe this is as good as it gets. Maybe this is SE's all out effort, a disappointing reality if it is so

stopped the innovation policy , this policy which brought love to
now is running cheap replica common products to save costs , that is why is always late than other compititors

I'm surprised by the lack of faith in this thread. This is usually the fountain of eternal optimism. Seen as everyone else has put in their opinions I may as well put in my observations and analysis.

I had a quick look at the numbers and this is what I saw:

Whilst the numbers look slightly better than Q2 the major bonus is the end of the restructuring costs, meaning from their bank account point of view it's a massive up on the last year or so and they can start to reinvest in development for next year. They've turned the ship around, now the hard work begins. Contrary to what many think I believe SE's current portfolia isn't a disaster for the coming quarter and I don't think Q4 will make or break SE. The upcoming push of 'X10 HD' will maintain the X10's sales till Christmas, and the minis, yendo and X8 should see SE move more units in Q4 than Q3 albeit with lower margins; numbers will be similar to Q2 but ~15% up.

I believe the next year needs to see more phones of the standard the X10 was at announcement and I think we'll see at least 4 high end phones in the 12 months. It's difficult to judge what their success will be until we know the final specs and design.

I think a lot of the negativity arpund SE at the moment is because there hasn't been anything significant happen for seemingly forever. But do not fear there must be some good action right around the corner, there must be. It would be beyond belief if we go through to next Q2 without a massive release of somekind.

Ricky & Bambara are SPOT on.

For me ... I think I've had enough of iPhone 4 but ONLY because I don't get to enjoy the media features throughout the day. For me the solution is iPod Touch 4th gen and BB_9780/9700.

SE is selling less number of devices overall because they have shifted from the high volume, featurephone segment to the smartphone one.

SE is making more money because their smartphones are selling beyond expectations.

Why is this so hard to understand?

This is not a bad thing, it's a good thing. If I were Bert, I'd take more money over more units sold anyday.

WP7 devices from 2011

http://www.ubergizmo.com/15/a[....]offer_wp7_devices_in_2011.html

And also note that the volumes were restricted due to parts shortage this quarter. The shortage not withstanding would have managed better numbers and even greater profit.

You forget that those feature phones SE had were selling at prices of smartphones so nothing's really changed as far as pricing is concerned.

Business is about making money and there is nothing wrong with making money but there is something very wrong when you fail to plan for the short and long term like SE has done. What they have clearly failed to recognize is that Q4 offers a lot of profits if you play your cards right. I read someone mentioning the X10 HD when the phone gets its update but what they fail to see is that the X10 has dropped in price and it is not having it easy dealing with the likes of the Desire HD, Galaxy S that will be running Froyo against Eclair of the X10. The X10 is not selling as well as the Samsung and HTCs. Don't tell me that that doesn't matter to a lot of people because it does when they ask about these phones and the sales person says 'the X10 is running an older version of Android'. The 'average' consumers won't ask even further what that means but will think 'I'm better off with something that's current than one that's outdated'.

There just is nothing from SE that will bring them better profits this quarter. They simply failed to plan and come up with a sound strategy. Their portfolio is weak and just can't compete this festive season.

Let's see what they have next year cause I am already past this year. I hope their long term planning is better and coupled with a much better strategy. I'm still hoping they make me a phone I can buy seeing that Motorola has no plan, thus far, to release the Droid Pro outside of the US.

Before we get into profits, needs stability and to make a profit which they have done. Great, now its up to them to increase the market share and build on their hard work. Not so long ago there was talk of Sony and Ericsson splitting and all these job losses etc. are on their feet now so I think that this time next year, we should be able to judge them properly. Maybe they couldn't afford to be too risky but I guess now, they can put their more ambitious plans in motion.

The recovery is complete, now lets see what they can do. Do they make more smartphones or do they try new hardware, remember the pressure sensitive touchscreen? If they start dishing out mid ends it suggests caution and maybe a longer term secure strategy. If they bring out a 16MP Android and a load of WP7 device or bad ass high end Walkmans, it shows that the company is healthy and that they have big balls. Development of the PSPhone is a good example.

Hey

New user, but have been reading for quite a while.

Just wanted to bring an interview with Bert Nordberg (CEO) posted yesterday to your attention. It's found at http://di.se/Artiklar/2010/10[....]ert-Nordberg-gar-for-tillvaxt/

It's in Swedish, but here are a few pieces that might be of interest (my translation):

To increase Sony Ericsson's appeal, Bert Nordberg promises new flag ship models that outshine the competitors

"We will step up and have a leading edge product in the future. It has become a race of the latest Android version and the highest clock speed. It's a race we have to adjust to. That's what the magazines write about"

huge applause for this realization (finally a company which admits this)
but as always - they need to deliver
words alone don't buy you new costumers

Posted by Dups!
The way he says 'That's what the magazines write about' is shocking! Consumers also want an up-to-date product which is mainly why the Eclair phones have outsold the Xperia phones.

He shouldn't listen too much to the useless P.R.O from SE cause we want a complete high-end phone or phones. I feel Bert is the perfect man for the CEO job but he needs to be his own man.

I really hope by 'leading edge' he means in all departments.

SE should also put into consideration the release date of the devices. Customers do not want to wait for too long.

Anyway, maybe SE can start their new initiative this year with the X12 - 12 mpx Android phone. Then next year X16, an android phone with 16.4 mpx camera. As the saying goes, early bird catches worms first.

the mind share that SE had is still a STRONG point for this company. they had a few bad years since the gross rejection of the P5i (remember paris .... wow~) anyway.

IF SE decides to place a GENERIC flavor of android on their devices, whos hardware reflects the promise of being related to SONY! and ERICSSON! *(consumer electronics plus the number 1/2 cell radio provider) this should be no competition. bezeless high resolution power sipping screens, battery technology, i could go on. but the fact that the X10 came out in january, only to be picked up in october, when it LEAKED in june of 09 ... is unreal. the delay was ONLY due to Time/Media scape and optimizing it for the device. when in reality had they released an upto date device (2.0/2.1) at the time it was announced, they would have had a SMASH hit, if you remember the N1 came out and stole the whole show from the X10 all of those sales could have gone to SE had they played the hardware game. had the scape scene been an additional download when it was ready, it would have been no reason if i were in charge to let the phone sit, as a finished product waiting for a pair of features that really dont help sell the phone. at least not in this market ... they need a technology forecaster, so that they dont fall short of upcoming trends. i nominate myself!

Exactly!!!!!!!

I hope they hold back on their next high-end announcement and announce it in December if it is to be released in January seeing that they won't be releasing anything this year. Hell, they coud even announce the phone early January and release it mid-January.

They need to play their cards right from now on.

A highend 8mp walkman android phone that plays xvid/dixv should be a part of their lineup

I guess that's the big surprise he mentioned when they opened the new HQ in Atlanta.

3 November 2010 or 12 December 2010?

Posted by tranced
Do you think it will be announced in the same date as the X10? I prefer to believe in your second option.

Posted by avmaxfan
Umm the announcement can be made late anytime around November/ December. It "was" supposed to be announced early november. I am not sure if the plan still holds or it has been delayed. IF it has not been delayed then yes we can expect an early November announcement of both the X11 and the X12.

*Fingers Crossed*

@Gauravsali

Sorry no pics
I wish I had

But since its a no doubt it will be a stunner just like the X10

The problem is not having the latest version and the higher clock... at the time X10 was ann. it was nearly like this...

the problem is with ( and then what ? ) will it have a long delayed update schedule that will make you stick with the stock version for a long time while other players have the latest... and when finaly the update comes you will be supriced by the fact that this update doesnt actually update the product to the latest version !! and guess what ? the phone is not compatable with tht latest version that has only be released after less than a year after the product launch ?

were I see this situation ?? ooo ops it's the Whole X10 series plus the X8 !! they're just stuck with 1.6 for long time.. and every other player is preparing for the 2.2 while SE is heavly promoting thier only update and just to 2.1 for which reason ? some says that the current Android platform is not compatible with 2.2.. but there's nothing really solid and official... the only response is ( we are consitrating the development for future products ) so how can be sure that if I bought that future product I'll not be stuck with the same excuse again ?

so while the X12 will have 3.0 or what ever.. will it have a solid and regually not-too-long-seperated updates to new versions ??

from what I hear... 3.0 will have less company customization than older versions.. I mean we may not see Sense UI or other similar and different UI's from HTC, Samsung, SE or Moto... this might tell us that development newer updates will take less time and resources... but is that true for ??

Posted by avmaxfan
Well...
This is where WP7 scores over Android

No whining over OS versions with it. All updates would be through Microsoft. OEMs have nothing to do with the updates.

Posted by jack00
well the only thing that i am really asking for is a decent winmob 7 phone with a 3,5inch screen(everything else is way too large)
i want to take hand written notes(come on its 2010) and a sketchbook pro app
i don't care about megapixels, software versions, 4inch screens, ghz or fancy timescape ui

Though it should be more in the Kentai thread, KDDI launched some new phones this morning, Urbano Mond & S005 Bravia are just updates from the previous collection, but they tease about Spring:

3rd is of course a Cyber-shot phone with human curvature design, but what about the phone on the left? It's quite edgy from the front and has three silver buttons like the XPERIAs.

The Regza IS04 also runs Android 2.1
And its got a 12.1 megapixel camera

P.S. In the pic it looks strikingly similar to the X10 no?

Apparently that new S006 is using the 16.2MP Sony Exmor R sense that was announced the other day. Other features include WiFi and a 1 Gigahertz SnapDragon processor

I wonder when SE phones out here will get that sensor if that model is already rocking one

Flip phones barely sell outside Japan anymore. It was developed for Japan and would practically take a complete redevelopment to get it to work on International networks.

Posted by Mizzou
it's a shame... I don't need touchscreen phone, I like the flip phone and Urbano Mond is in the style (by design) of Xperia X10, hmmm, stylish phone with very good camera... I'm going to live in Japan!!!!

I'll wait for the Xperia X12

I hope the Satio successor won't look like the S006. I find it ugly
I agree, though, SE really need more mid-range phones - touchscreen Walkmans with cameras up to 5 MP and Cybershots with 5 and/or 8 MP cameras. Maybe also a refreshment for the G series - a lower-end touchscreen with wi-fi, gps and touchscreen, of course This kind of phones will bring SE more money, not those high-end ones (though they're needed, too).

Posted by avmaxfan
The phones for Japan I guess are more SONY than as they have a lot of SONY tech in them, much more than phones for the rest of the world.
For eg. CMOS sensor from SONY has been in these japanese phones for quite some time now while the rest of the world hasn't even got 1 with the SONY CMOS or EXMOR R censor.

This means the 16.2 camera module is somehow ready! I was expecting to see phones with this camera around early Q2 2011.

This also means I will be seriously mad at Sony Ericsson if they don't announce a phone with a 16.2 megapixels camera and other 12 MP phones in their next global announcement!
