I think it means the samples are ready to ship to manufacturers in January, not handsets that use this module will ship in January. I find it very hard to believe that Sony can announce this sensor a few days ago and 2 months later handsets have been developed around this module, tested and are ready to ship. We won't see these on the shelves till this time next year.

Posted by avmaxfan
^^

Maybe X12 won't have this sensor, or maybe it will.

Anyways we must also not forget that we are talking about SONY here and not SONY ERICSSON. Sony is much faster when it comes to launching products in the market. I am pretty certain we will see atleast 1 by Q1 2011 with this sensor being announced (if not released)

Posted by smclion102
I am pretty Sure will launch 1 model with 16.4 mp later next year.maybe it wil be available btw Q3-Q4

Posted by io_bg
synn, I'm not that sure of what you said about SE and cameras. For example - Vivaz. It's probably one of the worst 8MP cameraphones. Close-up shots are okay, but landscape ones look really crappy, like if they were painted.
Anyway, I hope to see the new 16 MP sensor in a SE device soon.

I have tried the Samsung Galaxy S which using Android 2.1

I was amazed that it support Arabic & Persian which I need , also there is Urdu

what I want to ask , would the X10 update would bring use these language support ?

because Android doesn't support them yet , I guess Samsung invented it

waiting for X10 update

Posted by mediar
If I remember right, SE said they'll make X10 competeble with more languages with the next updates.

anyone have info on a sonyericsson windows phone 7 device that might get announced today? think today is the microsoft windows phone 7 event

http://www.engadget.com/2010/[....]event-is-tomorrow-at-9-30am-e/

Posted by goldenface
I was under the impression SE were not announcing their WP7 until later on in the year - possibly early November.

Posted by Legen
that will suck if true. every other phone maker seems good to go(from the leaks that is)

Posted by doministry
Definitely no phone today on WP7.

And not every manufacturer will show devices today, like Dell.

I donīt think SE wont release any W7 phone in the near future they will focus on Android to 110%, and W7 with 0% because the masses donīt want W7.....

Of course you have some sort of information to back this up right? Or were you recently appointed to speak for the masses?

Please, conjecture is one thing, but baseless drivel really does not belong here. You just waisted 15 seconds of my life reading that pointless post.

And i have just done the same thing with your's

Posted by jjjajjj
Hmmm... I am really glade that SE didn't Announce any WM7 phone today,
because all the phones That have been announced today were ordinary with almost look-a-like designs and the same hardware .

There isn't much they could do with the hardware but surely you agree that they're all very impressive, all forced to be high end. HTC had a great range of devices but the Dell looks amazing. It would have been hugely beneficial for if they had shown us a proto or at least allowed a leak for it because the HTC's are all that are being talked about. If the majority get a HTC at launch and they turn out to be good, why would people switch to later on? By the time the Xperia comes out, everyone would have settled with their devices and its clear that HTC want to establish themselves with the OS the same way they did with Android.

This is potentially a massive market, HTC are going all out which is risky if the OS flops but if there is only one Xperia out, its a small loss which is worth the risk because if WP7 becomes a hit, will miss out on a big slice of the pie. All that matters is that HTC profits increased massively last quarter and its not like their phones are so amazing or anything, they are a very smart company. They're going to do even better over the next quarter.

The Dell is getting much love and its the type of device that you would wait for and resist buying the HD7 Pro despite Dell being a lightweight compared to HTC. Its an approach the should have adopted given that they are a reputable mobile company. As the WP7 marketing machine gets into full swing, I think will be forced to leak or announce something early even if they release much later on. Even if WP7 flops, there will be a massive initial rush in sales and then, people may choose to leave for something else but there is a lot of good things about the OS and I think that it will establish itself. Considering that the majority use Windows on their PCs, having that on a mobile with full compatibility is a dream come true for many. If I never experienced the horror of the X1 and X2, I would probably be with Microsoft now on some sort of HTC, placing an order for WP7.

Posted by jjjajjj
True the Dell Lightning is a nice looking device, but the resat is the same too me. yes true they are a high-end devices but there nothing special about them ( Except the UI of course )

I have info to back up with from a person inside SE i canīt say anymore about it more then i have and that is that there is no plans for W7P from SE in the near future, thatīs atleast what i have been told

@se-fan

Just when I was about to chastise dr.W on his attack on you you go and completely justify his attack on you.

The only OS that will not be supported for the time being is Symbian so your 'source' is wrong on Windows.

Anyway, it is best that SE don not announce a Windows phone now cause I see another long wait before it reaches the shelves, they rather delay the announcement until they are ready to ship the units in less than a month. I also hope that their Windows phone will have something better than the already announced ones cause it will not help them if the damn thing is a replica of the HTC or Samsung that is released next year after the competition has had a large slice of the pie. SE will need to be adventurous and go beyond the minimum hardware set by Microsoft. Add playstation functionality in there for good measure.

Posted by rizzamarv
What really surprised me is that the phones are really all nearly identical.... Is it really not possible for one of the companies to distinguish themselves at least a little (ok the dell, but the others all same). WM used to be for power users and except for the Dell none of them offer a keyboard, whats that about?

After the the reviews which have come up so far I am really sceptical anyway, there are seriously a lot of things missing from the OS, on the other side while this might bother me W7 is maybe really a mass market product, basically it is missing the same things like IOS... which is hugely successful.

Will wait it out (like always) and see what SE comes up with.... Just don't want same phone like everybody....

I havenīt said that they not will support W7P just that there wont be any this year and in the beginning on next year and i totally agree with you on the point that its right for SE. Just look att the disaster of X2. If they come up with something the phone has to be 110% finished and something remarkable:)

@se-fan

Got you. Your post 'I don't think SE won't release any W7 phone in the near future they will focus Android to 110% and W7 with 0% because the masses don't want W7...' is what started the confusion. Notwithstanding the 'in the near future' that whole post is confusing and your response to dr.W was also a little vague.

Yes, I see a Windows phone from SE sometime in Q2 of next year. SE just can't keep up which is holding back their progress.

Posted by badassmam
have had the hardware for a while now and really they should have had their phone at the launch but there are some really strange things that they do to shoot themselves in the foot. Still no 2.1 on the X10 and 1.6 on the X8, its such a stupid mistake and it absolutely amazes me. In terms of design and form factor, the Dell is unique but the hardware and software will always be similar to the competition. If you were to stick a 1.5Ghz processor in a WP7, you probably wouldn't notice much difference at all so don't worry about that aspect for the time being. If you're expecting to amaze you, don't because you'll only get a better quality camera but other than that, nothing much.

Lots of bad decision making, the list of cancelled phones is larger then the current portfolio! Look how far they got with Reese before they pulled the plug there, massive waste of time and money. Somewhere in the cold part of Europe there must be a 007 Q lab full of strange prototypes, I'd love to see a spy shot of that or even PeterKay's legendary window ledge.

Posted by FMW300
Oh what I would give to see all those phones that were cancelled in the past 1 or 2 years! Imagine the potential some of them may have had! It would be great if someone here had info/pics on some of them....

have you guys read the review of windows phone 7(samsung omnia 7) on gsmarena? under disadvantages, it appears the platform has a bunch of stuff missing. including file manager & equaliser!

1.3 million units shipped Q1 and 1.5 million units Q2

And some not so good news with regards to the X10

Fcuk the equalizer.
But WP has no copy & paste, no filemanaging, no multitasking, to task manager,

Posted by Dups!
Copy & paste will be added on their next firmware update.

I have a feeling the other features will be added as time progresses.

To be honest, I'm warming up to Windows phone, it looks quite promising. I expect Microsoft to further enhance it to be brilliant. I will wait until they do so but right now I'm beginning to see myself with Android and W7 as my two mobile OSs with Android being my main or preferred smartphone OS.

Anybody know what Abelin is?

Yep, was supposed to be the portrait slider with qwerty, like Palm Pre or Dell Venue Pro.

Sonyericsson Q3 results. Not good, not bad.
Good news, still profitable.
Bad news, loosing market share.

Wow!

I think I was right all along, that they are going to post a bad Q1 result next year. I agree tyko, these results are neither good nor bad but definitely spell doom for Q1 next year. Look at that sharp drop in units shipped, from 11.5m (last quarter) to 10.4m during this quarter. I have said they should've planned some phones for release this quarter and it looks like they are about to pay the price much sooner than I had anticipated. Their Q4 results are going to be worse than these.

Imagine what Q1's results will look like. They have just kicked themselves out of the top 5 manufacturer's list with their very bad strategy.

Poor planning and poor decisions!
[ This Message was edited by: Dups! on 2010-10-15 08:36 ]

Posted by tyko
Well i'll guess its partly due to the fact that there is a shift in sales from low/midend feature phones to smartphones. Their profit actually increased compared to last quarter.

Posted by goldenface
Don't forget that they are still in the middle of a turn around.

A couple of years ago they were ready to move from being a marginal player to a main player with a market share grab based on multiple copy n paste phones.

Since then they have had to abandon that strategy (good idea!) and do an about-turn and race to embrace smart phones with touch screens, at the same time already being years behind Samsung and Apple etc.

They predicted last year that they wouldn't see profitability until late 2010 but with two profitable quarters behind them they are at least heading in the right direction - even if we are yet to see them get back to their winning days when they produced hit phones year after year. Next year I'm hoping to see some of the old Sony Ericsson goodness reappearing.

Posted by Shino03
I agree with dups. They should have at least 2 new phones for this quarter. Motorola and Lg have a dozen of new smartphones for this quarter and I don't see any future plan from SE to compete with those phones. It's a lousy idea to take for granted this quarter when most people buy new phones.

Posted by FMW300
I really thought the X10 minis would have boosted their sales, but I guess their portfolio just isn't diverse enough right now. Hopefully next year, they'll have a much larger range of models available. Maybe cancelled too many phones this year! So, the only new handsets this quarter are X8, Cedar and Yendo? Nothing else to come in December?

Posted by bart
SE won't have a good Q4
the reviews are bad, the line up is out dated, while SE will finally introduce andorid 2.1 others will be at 2.2

the only thing they can do is slash the price of symbian phones to hopefully increase their sales.
i'm sure the live feed will sell good, but then again, its limited to some devices.

i expect SE to have a difficult 2011, they will drop out of the top 5 and start making less profit.

for me SE is no more, they killed them selves by stopping with the development of symbian.

Posted by >500
why should Q4 be bad?

Q4 is 'usually' a pre paid period... and have a good folio for that... though, obviously profit margins wont be as big
