When SonyEricsson would use a bigger sensor to compete with NOKIA N8 1/1.9" sensor?

While the amazing Satio only has 1/2.5" and VIVAZ 1/3.2"

Posted by rss_ndrsn
^If the quality of the picture taken by the N8 camera is not "remarkably" better than that of Satio and Pixon12, then having camera hardware like the N8's is just for marketing purposes or plain useless. Although the pics that Nokia showed in the last couple of weeks were very promising, still we have to wait for the commercial version to finally pass our judgment onto it.

What I am waiting for SE is to use liquid lens technology which is well-suited for cameraphones. That type of lense will produce better quality of pics even if it have optical zoom compared to the glass lens that is widely use right now.

I just hope that Walkman Vivaz will have top notch audio playback through headset and stereo speakers. Moreover, I hope the superb audio quality is included in the SAtio 2 or Vivaz with 12 mpx.

Actually, its the best selling smartphone not the best selling phone, because feature phones are much more popular in Japan-and more powerful than a lot of smartphones. They just have proprietary OSes made for DoCoMo. Remember, people in Japan use their phones to watch tv and as digital wallets, more than they use them as mini computers. That could change soon with some of the new smartphones coming out, but currently smartphones lag far behind "feature phones" in sales in Japan.

There's a reason all right, it seems the competing smartphones are worse -

There's no greater evidence of this than the word this week that Sony Ericsson's Xperia X10 -- a phone that's been met with lukewarm reviews, including from Engadget Japanese's own Ittousai -- has allegedly become NTT DoCoMo's best-selling smartphone in history, a fact that would seem completely inexplicable in any other market globally. What makes it possible in Japan, of course, is DoCoMo's historically lame selection of true smartphones, a lineup that currently includes localized versions of the HTC Magic, and the original HTC Touch Diamond and BlackBerry Bold. What's more, many of these devices integrate poorly with popular carrier services on account of their super-tight control of the operating systems running across the featurephone lineup, something they've got less control over with a device running Android or Windows Mobile.

so theres few smartphones releasedd in Japan, or few that sell well. But the x10 has been the best selling in history there, nothing can change that (yet). No matter if theres only 4 smartphones, the x10 was the best selling one. Its not as if its been the only smartphone ever released in Japan. We should be congratulating SE.

Engadget clearly dont like or many others for that matter. Apart from Apple.

Im no fanboy, but have achieved this and hats off to them.

@>500
exactly my thoughts, when you read the Engadget post regarding the X10 being the fastest selling smartphone in Japan you don't see anything that says SE doing a good job or hats off to them, or two thumbs up or maybe just even one. Hell, the whole article was talking about how Japan's smartphones weren't good or were tightly locked by the carriers, yes it was one of the reasons why the X10 became the fastest selling smartphone but we should also give credit where it's due and that's to SE for achieving that goal. I really don't like Engadget but I personally find their site pleasing to the eyes and the news that they bring to the table is above average, but you can clearly see their love for Apple....which I don't like. Still, congratulations to SE for achieving this milestone with the X10, it really is a great device. Sadly, it's not available here in the US yet (for the AT&T 3G bands anyway).

But they also have potential to make disaster out of it.
Like with WM Xperias: X1 was great from the beginning, X2 is still a disaster after months waiting for the
good firmware.
Nothing is for sure in this company.

Yeah the 'a' versions seem to take longer. We have two main networks here, one gets the X10, one will get the X10a. The X10 has been released but no sign of the X10a yet! In saying that though, it shouldn't be very far away. And with the current US network focus on Android handsets, I doubt yours will be too far off either.

Posted by NoTnERb
@Muhammad-Oli
yeah, I'm no expert but I don't think it takes three months just to do that. I'm pretty disappointed with how they handled the X10a, if only I could switch carriers. I will probably be skipping the X10a, though I love that phone, I'll be waiting for the SE phone where Sony has a big role in it.

It's interesting to see the reaction to this news around the web. A few have congratulated SE for a good marketing campaign and for producing a successful product but for others it just sticks in their throat that SE have produced a phone which has hit the top spot and give them some much needed success at last.

I've even read comments describing the Japanese as 'weird' and even no longer a hi-tech country and you can tell that it really gets peoples backs up and I'm really glad that it does.

Others have said it's only sold because the Japanese are fiercely patriotic - but Apple iPhone is also in the top ten so that just doesn't wash. They're trying to dismiss SE's success in Japan as some weird fluke but really they've just produced a good phone and marketed it well. Ultimately, consumers vote with their wallets and on this occasion they just chose the Xperia.

Commentators in the mobile industry should be at least glad that there is healthy competition and alternative choices for the consumer - that would be the right thing to do.

Sorry for the OT post.

It's the same with most so called analysts. SE was written off by quite a few, with some of them even predicting the exact timeframe in which they expected it to decline and wither away. And now, with SE doing a creditable job, they are unwilling to admit and give credit for the same.
With the X10, Sony Ericsson have shown that they still have the capability and the expertise to create a top notch device that can be perched at the pinnacle of mobile tech.

new cyber-shot phone for japan S003
maybe satio II design will be like that phone considering satio's design is similar with the S001
they've also announced a new bravia phone S004

It's good to see some new phones announced, however I think they are quite bulky (both are 18 mm thick). They would probably be much slimmer and would look better if they were touchscreen monoblocks.

Posted by rss_ndrsn
^I'd like to see that "Plasma Flash" on Satio 2. According to this site http://www.plasma-i.com/photography.htm , it is better than Xenon Flash and can be used on both photo-taking and filming. That means better "camera flash" in less space. Fingers-crossed!

Special edition of Aino is named Aino classic.

What's so special about it? The price: Reduced by ~50€ due to the stripped package.

Available in Germany from June, the "normal" Aino will go out of production.

Posted by io_bg
Are there any pictures of the Aino classic?
Also, will the new Android have Fast port or micro USB? And what version of Android will it be running? (I hope 2.2)

-12.1 megapixel camera with Auto-Focus, 2x optical zoom and Sulphur Plasma flash
-Full HD 720p @30 fps video recording with continuous auto-focus
-16/32gb internal memory, 512mb RAM, 1g ROM
-HDMI port, Mini USB 2.0 and 3.5mm headphone jack
-1800mhz Li-Po battery
-stereo speaker/s and dual stereo mics
-built-in noise cancellation technology
-wide audio and video format support
-video playback with no conversion needed (ala Samsung OmniaHD)
-Wi-fi n and Wimax, and 4G/? support.

Posted by rss_ndrsn
Well, I do not remember myself complaining about the price. Beside, I can get phones straight from suppliers so price will not be an issue for me. Also, considering how the pricing goes nowadays, for example the Nokia N8, such device would be price reasonably.

^It is actually either of the two. In case SE make this device, most likely it will be released early next year. We all know technology will be raised again in 2011. Rumour has it, that HTC is working on a phone capable of full hd recording with dolby digital 5.1 surround sound. So just making sure, it will remain one of the high end devices next year.

1Ghz snapdragon and 512Mb Ram are so 2009 (HD2 anyone?)...
Mini usb is so 2005

Posted by rss_ndrsn
^I mistaken the Mini USB as Micro USB. So it was really micro USB that I meant.

Ok the must be RAM 1GB.

About the processor, SE can use Tegra 2 if they want, or the ST-Ericsson Dual-Core processor. But the latter will not be released until second half of 2011. We need this phone released as soon as possible. (AS if it is going to happen)

I am up for an upgrade next month and there is no P1i-esque Android phone for me

If I decide to join the full touchscreen craze then SE has nothing that I like, looks like I may, for the third time in my life, pick a non-SE.

Who knows, I may be willing to drag my upgrade till late this year just to see what SE has in store, I've actually went beyond my upgrade by a before so it is no problem at all.

If SE comes up with nothing by Q4 I see myself with an Iphone 4G.

the new samsung galaxy s looks like a winner.
btw the people at SE can't even implement multitouch )

I guess your better off with Iphone 4G. You will never get P1i-esque Android, at least for this year. You can get Aspen but it is running Windows Mobile. SE probably is going to make an Android with sliding QWERTY keyboard but not the P1i style.

What about the Dell Smoke? Has andriod and a very p1-esque form factor

http://www.engadget.com/2010/[....]d-form-factor-you-secretly-wa/

Posted by Dups!
I actually love the Dell's design, it looks like something from SE's design department. That is one sleek and beautiful phone.

Yes, there is a but and that is it is terribly long at 119mm. I was looking in the region of 109 to 112mm.

I will have to see it before I completely rule it out, maybe its length is acceptable in the hand.

No news in the last few days?
Hoping to see the new Walkman announced soon

Posted by blizaga
This year is more quiet than last year Hope they announce soon.

Posted by hammera
According to Mizz there should be an announcement (and possibly releases) in the next 4 or 5 weeks.

Posted by badassmam
I heard from an insider that we probably won't have any more high ends until next year which sounds a little suspect. He said that the next announcement is soon and will be for mid end stuff. The Windows phone is way off so maybe MWC 2011. Only a few more phones to be released this year, as few as 4 maybe from other sources. It sounds strange because August/September time is where you have the most activity and I was expecting a Satio 2. I wouldn't be surprised if announced a few phones and release them much later, it flopped for the X2 but was good for the X10.

Anyhow Nokia will have the N8 out, the N97 successor to be announced as well as a number of new devices (XM stuff). Samsung doing stuff around the same time, Androids and various Omnia phones. HTC to reveal a Desire spec phone with qwerty as well as the Windows phones (possibly 1.3GHz according to some) and lower end Androids as well. LG to release their Windows phone. A few mega Motorola phones, maybe even a Nexus 2 which is said to be by Moto but who knows. Oh, I almost forgot the iPhone which is actually a really good update to the 3GS, it will go head to head with the Froyo devices because both have a really good UI.

Posted by -16-
Thanks for this interesting info badassmam.
Can you tell a little bit more about the qwerty Desire? Maybe the quarter it will be released?

Posted by badassmam
@ -16-

I think the HTC stuff will be around September.

Also, a few people are saying that there are a few regrets about the X10 and Mini. With the X10, they are finding it hard to update for whatever reason so you won't get Froyo soon. The multi touch is a lesser problem as they expect more apps to cater for phones with this function. For the Minis, a lot off apps will not work because of the screen so its unlikely that many apps will be made to suit it specifically when there are so many normal Android devices out. What it means is that in the future, should be a bit more consistent and have a 'normal' sized screen with multi touch possibly like the upcoming Walkman if the speculation is correct.

Posted by 10123
I don't see the point in SE releasing any more high end phones till next year, the X10 should be the main phone for SE, and once 2.2 comes availble I wouldn't be suprised to see SE pushing the X10 again.

Posted by Dups!
I just don't see how they won't release at least one more high end phone this year other than the walkman phone.

They usually take a year in updating their flagship imaging device so Satio is likely to be replaced.

Their portfolio is already thin this year and without one more high end how long do they expect to milk the X10, X10 mini/pro and/or Vivaz pro? It just doesn't make business sense to me at all.

My guess is the walkman phone and a Satio successor are going to be released this year.
