I hope with the camera being stock android, the HD recording remains...

Posted by moogoo
very happy about the update, but sad about losing face recognition. i actually use it a lot to organize my photos. oh well... it's a small price to pay for the upgrade i suppose. perhaps there's a 3rd party app out there that does it and if not, perhaps I can make one!

Just a thought, wondering if video and sound will be improved even more on the X10 with the Gingerbread update as nativly its better on Android 2.3 and will be the case with the DHD 2.3 update, could be the same with the X10.

OMG BREAKING NEWS! Xperia X10 to receive Android Gingerbread by Q3 2011!

I have been working with this blog for almost 1 ½ years. After lots of interaction and discussion, by far the most intense discussions lately were around XperiaTM X10 Android upgrades. We earlier stated that we did not have plans for further upgrade of the XperiaTM X10 beyond Android 2.1 Éclair, which was correct at the time.

However, I am happy to inform you that this has changed. We plan to bring an upgrade to Android Gingerbread for the XperiaTM X10 to generic trade kits end Q2 / early Q3 this year. We have heard your requests all along but until today have not been able to confirm this. The great work on our 2011 products XperiaTM PLAY, XperiaTM arc and XperiaTM neo actually has enabled us to start the work in a special project bringing Gingerbread to the XperiaTM X10.

I want to know if the HD recording and continuous focus will still be retained.

Posted by Bonovox
Well,my link I put in to GSM Arena it says nothing about that but mentions other features which will go

Posted by Toney_Ericsson
HD recording will remain for sure.

Posted by Bonovox
I don't see why not when the new Gingerbread Xperia line up have HD

Posted by goldenface
Yeah, it would be a shame if those did go. It would make me think if it would actually be worth it. It's no use having Gingerbread if there is going to be a loss of functionality but I guess it's a personal choice ultimately.

Posted by Bonovox
Time will tell as more news comes in. But I see no reason why it should go. I have now sold my x10 looking forward to Neo delivery

Place yer bets that Vodfaone UK wont release it on there handsets causing more disgruntled folk

My Phone is Sim Free thankfully

Pah,branding not good

My guess: HD recording, most certanly. Continuous focus, not very likely.

SE will restore the faith of many of their customers by this act of goodwill, so kudos to them Some of the features that'll be lost are no biggie to me. The face recognition feature is only good for laughs when I look at the mismatched faces more often than they are spot on. I made a mistake 2 days ago recording a family moment on HD, which I've never done, and had a hard time uploading 300+mb of a 7 min footage with the YouTube app as I had to be somewhere else and it wouldn't upload over data connection so I was stuck at home for some time. Continuous focus is irritating for me too as my videos are mostly recorded indoors where lighting is less than optimal and that's where the continuous focus struggles which can be irritating. Some of my precious family moments came out blurred because of it. So those features, I don't mind losing eventhough axing HD is highly unlikely and does provide me with a nice, high end option.

did they announce that the x10 wouldn't get anymre updates after 2.1 though?
if it has been just a rumour then I dunno who to believe anymore lol

Posted by Toney_Ericsson
Wasn't a rumour they changed their mind...

Posted by Miss UK
Well hats of to them I think then,
although said it before and now im not intrested in a update in it anyway,

if the phone isn't broken leave it
if it is then update it

anyway im of to sleep bloody work later

Posted by Toney_Ericsson
Its not about being broken its about system improvement which has moved forward and functionality also when 1.6 was on the X10 and everyone else was on 2.1 there were apps in the market that didn't even work with the X10 because of the old and deceased Android version it was on.

Posted by OffLineR
You are right not being able to install latest applications really suck.
Apart from that I agree with @Miss UK

Don't mess with the software if you are happy

Posted by roanmy
HUGE problem!

So usually I have my phone at about 85-90% brightness, and it lasts a day. Barely, but it does.

However, I turned it to 100% and I've lost 7% in about 20 min, and it's almost only been in the standby. The time I actually used it was to send ONE sms.

Is this a common problem or am I just unlucky?

Technology always moves forward, it doesn't go backwards or sit static, if it sits static its dead and done.

I don't think some people understand the concept of why newer Android is best, it's not only being able to use the latest and greatest applications but theres also system improvements.

Heres an example for you between 2.1 and 2.3 specifically to do with video and the sound recording and why the 2.3 Gingerbread update is obviously good and why I'm looking forward to it.

The Gingerbread update will improve audio in video recording.

Right now the audio bitrate is 32 Kbps with 8.00 Khz Sampling rate.

With Gingerbread this is now 128 Kbps with 44.1 Khz Sampling rate. .

Also there is less video compression in Gingerbread. Right now average video bitrate is 8000 Kbps. With Gingerbread 2.3 it is 10000 Kbps average.

Roll on 2.3 I say

@ roanmy : the battery life does suck on the x10.... Requires at least twice a day charging with minimum use. To prolong it to a day and a half - turn off data, wi fi, keep screen on minimum tolerable brightness and make sure you have the display sleep option to the minimum.

Posted by Toney_Ericsson
Best app I have found to manage data on the X10 is APNdroid.

Put the widget on your home screen and switch on when you need it and off when you dont, it does greatly increase battery life with all Android devices.

Heres the app

@Oogamous

I've never had any (serious) battery issues before the dual-touch update...
Would it perhaps be fixable by re-flashing? Or is this just the way it is?

Posted by Oogamous
@ I don't think re flashing would help as i too have experienced a drop in battery life after the dual touch update. Maybe the screen is more power hungry now. And I am hardly running any widgets either.

Posted by OffLineR
Since I uninstalled moxier, timescape and other crappy apps that I don't use I have about two days battery life during moderate use.

I think one of the best apps is Settings Profile Lite. I set to to turn on WiFi when I am home and turn it off when I'm not.
Love it. Greatly saves power.

Posted by moogoo
i use my phone constantly and have no issues with battery life at all. i charge my phone to 100% every night regardless but when i go to bed i'm lookin at 45-65%. that's with bluetooth, gps, and wifi on. I spend a lot of time texting, at least 90 minutes on the phone talking (all day long that is), surfing the web, streaming vids, and playing games (guns and glory is addicting).

I love the battery life on my x10 and couldn't be happier with it considering what i do. my brightness is set to auto adjust though.

Posted by roanmy
^Then you probably have an old firmware. I haven't had any problems before the last update, and auto-brightness is no longer available there. =P

Posted by moogoo
indeed i have old firmware. it's the straight 2.1 update with no MT update after it.

I am curious if multi-touch will remain in the 2.3 update? since the MT isn't native on the x10 but an SE software mod it seems like (i may be mistake). any thoughts?

The dual-touch features will still be there in the 2.3 update. I'd bet my my house on it.

Battery life, general phone speed, flash in the browser, wifi tethering and apps2SD should be the major improvements on the OS side. I've not played with the new timescape and watered down mediascape yet so I can't say for definite if they are improvements but they look good as far as I can tell.

flash in the browser, wifi tethering and apps2SD is very good news for me!

Posted by moogoo
almost forgot about getting flash in the browser... awesome. now let's hope i actually get the update in a reasonable time instead of how i've been waiting forever for the MT update.

How do i unlock my x10i ? and what does it cost?

what did you use? are you locked to a carrier? what firmware do you use?

Posted by Miss UK
so is there a actual date for launch of 2.3 then?

Posted by Ricky D
end of Q2, beginning of Q3 it's only for generic handsets though, so if you haven't debranded to a generic FW you won't get the update

Posted by OffLineR
I think we won't get it until the end of Q3

SE opens bootloader for new Xperia range – X10 not included

In case you haven’t heard the news, Sony Ericsson is officially unlocking the bootloader for its new range of Xperia smartphones. Click here to read the full post over at Xperia Blog. However, the disappointing point for X10 owners is that the handset will remain locked due to “technical and legal reasons”. Maybe SE will change their mind at some point, but given the legal aspect we expect not. Whilst disappointing for us X10 owners it is at least good news that they have listened to the community for its future Android ranges.

Posted by Tsepz_GP
Excellent news! my faith in SE has just been restored, they realy are listening to customers, all that's left is for them to announce a dual-core based Android, hopefuly running on either NVIDIA Tegra2 or TI OMAP4 and not crappy Qualcomm.

Posted by SKIBBE
althoug the Tegra chip is awesome, it builds walls for other android phones, as games is developed only for the tegra chip, it has it's own game-market allready...

Posted by Shino03
I'll probably buy an X10 this April or May because of that update but I want to know if the dual-touch works also in 3rd party apps like on angry birds for instance. I've just seen a video of X10 playing angry birds and it's quite laggy.

Posted by mode
Works in angrybirds (and works on all third party apps that I have so far) and no, no lag at all as far as I've noticed. Which video was it?

Posted by Tsepz_GP
Yep, ive never experienced lag in Angry Birds, and dual-touch works just fine in all apps.
