Heh I know it WORKS!

I ask about MEMORY. Apparently X10 doesn't allow install on sd card.
I would like to install email client and download some emails etc.
So everything will be stored on internal memory?

The question is how about internal memory after some time.
Do you have any problems with that? Or 400 MB is enough?

If am not mistaken, e-mails are not saved but you can search any e-mail through search and it works via data connection. So basically you searching the e-mails from the server itself and not from the internal memory. Please correct me if am wrong

Well, if it works this way, it's crap.

I want to use ProfiMail. Hopefully it can store things to memory card........
I'm still undecided about X10.

I noticed that after cleaning browsers memory it deleted all my bookmarks. CRAP.

And I HATE CAPACTIVE SCREENS. Really, selecting things in the browser is a nightmare. Disaster.

I also noticed that I can't go to the END of the quoted txt

I have to switch to landscape.

Lack of keyboard and any navikeys is a massacre

according to profimail website, it only downloads headers and will download the entire message once you've selected it. which is similar to how gmail and the native email client works. btw, which one are you using and are you at a phone store or using a friend's? I would assume once you do select a message to be downloaded it will download it to the cache on internal memory for quick retrieval. attachments are downloaded to the SD card. In the even you're checking (thereby downloading) an enormous amount of emails, i would assume there is a max cache that is allocated and oldest messages are purged for new ones instead of continually filling up the internal memory (that would be ridiculous). Then again, it's just text! and seriously, you've got plenty of memory for text emails and attachments (pics, sounds, etc) go to SD, so no worries there.

perhaps the x10 isn't for you if a hardware keyboard is that important. selecting text becomes easier once you get the hang of how the phone reacts to your finger. obviously everyone's finger is a little different so there is no perfect way, but it's something we learn with use.

and the quote thing... i don't know what you mean, but i'm guessing it's just an issue of getting used to a full finger touch interface.

ProfiMail on my current device works like this:
Downloads headers by default. Once I choose emails for download, they are downloaded to device
and I can store any attachement wherever I want.

So I can keep all my emails on device when I want...
So nothing is deleted from the device until I decide to do so,
the only limitation is device's memory. What is logical and expected.

As for quoting:
Nope, it looks like a browser problem.

I quote the long post, and to enter the text I select text field.
Device automatically navigates to the beginning.

Text is much longer than the visible part.
So I want to navigate to the end of it.
It starts to scroll the text but after a moment it starts to navigate the whole page instead.
The only way to do this is to put the device in landscape mode.
In portrait - no way.

P.S. I test my own unlocked unbranded X10 which I got from my carrier for 30 cents.
And still undecided.

@doministry - is there really any need to throw out insults? we're all trying to help you with the issues you seem to be having with the x10. i was under the impression you were considering the x10 as your upgrade and here you are with one in your hand the whole time. what exactly are you considering anyway? you have one. you spent a bit of change on it.

I'm quite sure about this.
Let me explain you how my gmail on X10 works.
I don't open gmail on browser as my iMail does a great job for me.
When I receive an e-mail it actually goes to iMail and does not go to gmail account (that's the way I have set up)
So when my iMail is not open it goes to my gmail account. so when my iMail is shut, indirectly I receive an e-mail on my X10 as it goes to gmail and when my iMail is open, I don't get e-mails on my X10.
Another thing I want to add, when I receive any e-mails on my X10 and after that when I open iMail - all the e-mails are gone from X10 as it goes directly to iMail.
This might sound little confusing but it's very simple. iMail is my main e-mail client where I can get to see all the mails like inbox/sent/draft etc.
So when the mails get transferred to iMail that means that particular e-mail is not there on gmail.com/X10. So if I want to go through that e-mail again I simply use search on gmail application on X10 and then I can go through it! But the e-mails are not stored, they are stored in iMail.
I have been doing this from last 2 years now and got 5996 e-mails in Inbox (for me each and every e-mail is very important)

So please correct me if am wrong anywhere, cause I want to know more about storing e-mails on X10.

Also I cannot attach any document through gmail application on X10 - only photos/videos or music via mediascape which is kind of really sad on google's part.

@Indiandawg

You can attach whatever file you want from the gmail app if you have a file browser installed. It should prompt you what app to use to find an attachment, just select Astro or ES or root explorer whatever you got installed.

Are you trying to say that your 6000 odd emails that your iMail client downloaded are no longer on the gmail servers and this is causing you an issue with moving over to using just the gmail client? If this is the case you may need to consider ditching those old emails, back them up to your PC if you can and use them only for reference. It'll be a long transition for you, but using gmail app is the way forward. And next time you use a pop3 email client consider unchecking the box that says "once downloaded remove mail from server", that's just information suicide. Saying that I felt sure gmail servers kept a copy of incoming mails on the server no matter what the client tells it to do. You've other options too, I'm not buffed up on iMail but there may be a function to restore mails to the server, if not, your last option is to forward them back to yourself so they're back on the gmail server and cut and run from iMail.

I steer as clear as possible from pop3 clients as it can get very confusing exactly where your mail is and you end up either losing data or duplicating everything.

Lol, what?!

I didn't have any idea I was insuling anyone!

I was seriously curious if he's laughing at my device or the fact he asked obvious question!

Didn't mean anything wrong so sorry anybody felt offended.

Yes I do consider X10 and probably will just quit it.
Outdated Android 2.1 and lack of hardware controls is not worth better browser.....

Ok I wanted to know if email client on X10 works like I like to.

I don't use Gmail, my account is empty.
I use other clients incl. Hotmail.

So, how it works on ProfiMail app which I use since UIQ and WM times, and is available on Android?

It stores locally whatever I download. If I don't want it, I just have headers.
Downloaded messages STAY on server/email client.
However when I DELETE them, they are also deleted from server.
This way my downloaded messages can be obtained by Outlook etc.
My phone is responsible for "cleaning" the inbox....

There's also option "delete from device", while leaving email on server....
Plus complete file manager with full store/attach functionality of whatever files I want.

So is it the same on native X10 email client?
Did anybody use ProfiMail here?

And again sorry Hobbs for confusion...

Never used profimail myself but I can understand what you're saying.

The native email client in android looks to me like it downloads all emails on connect, not just headers, but I'm testing it with a gmail account so it might recognise that and just act like the gmail client.

I believe on setup it will automatically search for your incoming and outgoing servers and decide whether to put you on pop3 or imap.

For gmail accounts it's defaulted to imap. Not sure what it will do for hotmail as I no longer have a hotmail account, but I think hotmail use http interfacing, they may have added pop3 servers too recently.

If you know the servers and settings you want you can press menu and set it up how you want it to be.

The default client will allow you to setup multiple accounts too.

Haven't you tried any of this already?

Posted by doministry
Just tried configuring one account.
Seamless and fine.

All of the body is stored so I can see everything offline.

But my X10 has serious issue!

CANNOT log into Google account.

I can enter my account from the browser with the same login/password,
but device cannot do it to use Calendar and Marketplace.

What a crap. Is there any setting in Google which I miss,
disabling this connection??!!

This happens on WiFi and with SIM card inserted/mobile data.

What a crap. Any ideas?

Posted by moogoo
@doministry - that's strange. there isn't a setting that's screwing it up. just try again later. once or twice i've had that issue and it seems like the google servers are just being wonky for some reason.

Profimail is available for android but afaik it is in beta, at least according to the site. seems like the native email client does what you want it to do except for the option of deleting on phone but leaving on server.

again, just wait awhile and try logging in again. btw, is there a reason you're against using google/gmail? i love their tools and use them regularly.

Well my phone doesn't connect since day 1, and the problem appears every day for the last few weeks (!) since I got my phone. Everything else works fine.

I don't want to use Gmail. First, I don't want to give them another info about me.
Second, I've been using different clients for over 10 years and just see no reason to add another one now.

As for native email app, it has two big lacks:
- you can't edit quoted message in reply, just delete this
- can't copy anything from email body (until you answer the mail and get txt box).

I also can't get used to these txt boxes on Android/X10 when writing.......

P.S. Guys are you able to attach documents to emails?

Ok

Since the 2.1 update I have noticed a couple of things that are really annoying.

First, every now and again, maybe once every couple of days, the Car will restart itself randomly. Sometimes it happens after a period of inactivity for the phone and sometimes whilst I am trying to do something with the phone.

Second, sometime when I have an APP running, it will self terminate and return to the menu screen. This is obviously not helpful when trying to use Google Maps as a navigation tool.

Third, whenever the update arrows show up on the top line, indicating the phone is 'SYNCHing' I believe, this never clears until I restart the phone and seems to aid in battery drain whilst it is on the display.

Anyone else noticed any of these or is my phone in need of replacement ? Any tips on eliminating these faults would be appreciated before I defect to the IPHONE 4 !!

The on screen keyboard took me a while to get used to too and the small box in landscape mode can be frustrating. I guess an in email select/copy/paste would sort out it's frustration in your case as you wouldn't then have to try and select the text within the small box.
And, yes, I can attach whatever document I want to emails using the gmail app. Not tested it in the email app, but from gmail you also need to have a file browser installed. Try Astro.

@woz2010
Sounds like you got some FW issues. A reflash of the firmware should fix it if that is the issue. I've not experienced any of your problems there. Although with the third the sync icon did appear for a very long time the first time for me as it was attempting to sync picasa albums (it may download thumbs for albums), gmail contacts, gmail mails, gmail calendar, fb contacts etc, it also has to verify your account details the first time. If that first sync was interrupted then it will just try again later. Is it possible that you've mistaken this first sync as a hang and interrupted it, thus leading to doing the same thing again on subsequent attempts?

Using the esFile Explorer I can attach whatever document I want to the gmail app or any other email account

As I get you here, arrows mean internet connection active, which never disables by itself.
It can be easily turned off in Settings.

The same when I want to establish a new account or just login to existing one.
What is not true of course because all the emails get synced to the device and browser works fine plus all the internet apps. So the connection is working fine.

I think the most common reason for Google Account connection problems is that you have the WAP connection as default connection type. Have you checked which connection is set as default? You can find it by going to Settings>Wireless & Networks>Mobile networks>Access Point Names (that's where it's on my X8 at least). I remember I had to manually set up a new APN named "Internet" as only the WAP and MMS settings were automatically set when I entered the SIM card for the first time as (at least) Gmail and Android Market don't work if WAP is selected as default connection. You can get the correct settings from your operator.

I hope this helps...

anybody know a good toggle panel widget that takes up only ONE row and can do: wifi, gps, bluetooth, vibrate/silent? in 1.6 there was a standard widget that did that, but it's gone in 2.1 and the standard widget for it now takes up 2 rows and is really ugly

I second that.

Posted by Ricky D
if I was looking for just those 4 on a single row I'd use individual toggles of the same style. There are widget packs, droidmania do some, SchreinerDev, Curve Fish look pretty cool (search 'toggle widget' in the.market) or you could use the 'Power Control' widget in combination with the side volume buttons for you vibrate/silent.

exactly what i was looking for. Thanks!

OK

Re-loaded the firmware after yesterdays post and the advice that my FW could be a little corrupt.

Then spent 2 hours setting the phone up.

Google maps still crashed out on me this morning, Market cancels itself sometimes and the phone has just restarted.

Anymore ideas or does my Phone need replacing ?

Do you know anyway how I can check how much data I've used on my X10?

Currently I'm using EDGE network and recently 3G network has been launched in India.
My main usage after 3G would be e-mails/browsing/youtube/facebook/timescape/internet radio/applications that use internet/live video streaming.
Basically I would love to use the phone to it's topmost level and I think 500mb would be very less for a month.

Reliance Mobile 3G tariff:
* Basic plan starts at Rs 100 - 100 MB usage for one month
* Other plans also available at attractive prices.
* Rs 2,100 - 21 GB - one month
* Rs 20 - 25 MB - one day (pre-paid)
* Rs 98 - 125 MB - one week
* Rs 299 - 200 MB - one month
* Rs 699 - 500 MB - one month

If you notice, there is a clear jump with the price and data usage after 699 plan. So that becomes a lot. I hope they soon come out with 10GB plan which would be nice for me.

i use 1.2gb every month.it last only because i use wifi at work.if i never used wifi at work it would be much higher.

Indiandawg i use a number from my service providers to check my data bundle balance.you can try that.
