Hi all

ok the time has come tonight to say goodbye to my k850. as you might see on my other threads it has came to an end in how much i could put up with the k850.

I am looking for a Candybar Nokia phone. Camera spec has to be atleast 5MP camera. I don't want a nokia that is slow either i want something that is easy to use, good to text with and good when it comes to the internet surfing etc. So someone please recommend me a Nokia phone and give me the reasons why? In the mean time I am going to look at phones myself and will come up with some that i see myself and i want your opinions. also it has to have a good battery life too. thank you

well update is that I got myself the N97 waiting for it to arrive and can't wait. Anyone know any good freeware sites for the s60 platform?

Are you looking at any smartphones or dumb phones? Otherwise i would say a Nokia 6700. has a 5 mega pixel camera with HSDPA solid build and is great classic phone for texting. Get it in black though as silver shows up finger prints alot. Camera is good. I am not sure what any others are like. Battery life is also great.

Bonovox i am looking at the 6700 too mate. it does seem like a good phone. but i am reading now reviews on the screen cracking? have you had this phone? plus does anyone know if you can switch 3g on or off on this phone?

Not heard about that no and i have not had that phone. I did have the model below it the 6303 and i had not one single problem with it plus it had a fantastic battery performance. As regards to screen cracking i think some people are just careless the phone has solid build quality. But the model below it was so reliable.
Yes you can turn 3G off

apparently the buttons on this phone are hard to press and texting is a bit slow

Posted by Bonovox
Strange cos s40 is normally fast its been out for a bit now so latest firmware might be faster. I never found the 6303 had no such problems but see if a shop will let you test one out for yourself see if you think its comfortable. What else you looked at?

Posted by Mr Miyagi
to be honest its the 6700 that i had my eye on. i think i will see if they will let me test it out in the store? they should shoudn't they? like cpw?

Posted by Bonovox
Actually they should just say to them you are going to spend silly amounts on cash on a new phone. Also i noticed blot of Nokia phone boxes don't have seals on them so they should be able to show you. If i am honest i want that phone too looks nice.
Also when you read customer reviews of phones i never go by what they say. Some people said the Nokia 6500c had cracked screen problems but when i had that model for a few months i never had that problem. Some people say they get signal problems its probably they got poor 3g coverage simple things like that. Try yourself first

N82 is still worth looking at and when compared to the 6700 you get wifi, s60 rather than series 40, larger screen (although the unit is slight larger too), xenon rather than led, video calling camera etc etc

Posted by Bonovox
Good option. Do CPWH still sell that model? Though guess you can get it cheaper online.

Thanks for replies all. Bonovox I have decided it's the 6700 for me I will ask them to let me test it first tho. I will be getting it from the o2 store. They are doing it for about £179 plus I will then send my k850 to s.e and get them
to fix it and then sell that. Fonebank are saying they can give me £36 for the k850 so atleast I can get some money for it. Masseur I did try the n82 before but I never could get on with the buttons on that phone. Thanks tho.

I have actually ended up ordering a new nokia n97 from Nokia directly plus I got a good deal. The handset is £449 sim free. However when i spoke to the Nokia sales guy over the phone. I asked if he could discount the price, he said he could possibly do that if I buy an accessory. So I bought a £9.99 case with the handset and he managed to bring the total price down to £350

So I am really happy with that, plus my mate has a N97 and had to come into work today on my day off just to have a play around with his handset again before making a final choice. I know its a lot of money but its going to be worth it I believe. I am happy though, just hope the handset comes 2moro now

Oh you lucky git i would love an n97 although with updated firmware. Hope its good for you and reliable. Have fun and enjoy

Posted by Mr Miyagi
hehe bonovox i know i am v lucky. my mate advised me to go on ebay and get it from a seller called ecell or something like that. he was doing it for £350 the handset but not sure about ebay plus it only said 1 year warranty. where when i spoke to nokia direct they said its 2 years with them so over all i am happy. i will try and write a mini review when i get the handset though

Thats a great choice! I recently got the chance to play on a mates N97, and i thoroughly enjoyed it! What a brilliant piece of kit it is, yes it has less RAM than Satio, but the rest of the device is just great, and its got a major firmware update coming its way later this month, should make it even sweeter than it already is. I would have also suggested the N97-Mini but if you're happy with N97 then go for it.

GUCCI.011 thanks my only wish now is for Nokia to fully support Mac's where I can update my software etc through a Mac. However I believe the N97 supports over the air software updates. If worse comes to worse, i will just have to get it updated at my mates house lol.

Posted by Tsepz_GP
Yep,you can update straight from the phone, for every NSU update theres an OTA one, the OTA updates are only 12mb at max, and yet give the same improvements and features as NSU update would, and those can be upto 200mb. So its better to just do OTA.

Posted by Mr Miyagi
How reliable is OTA ? Because when I had my n73 I had that option available but it never really did say new s.w was available. Even though there was. And I had to update it on da pc I had at the time? Also how long do u reccomend I charge da phone for ? Shall I charge it fully then let it drain till low battery and then charge it fully again ? Someone said do this 3 times. What is the best way to do this?

Posted by Bonovox
Will Nokia provide more ram in an update?

It is, really. I updated my N86 FOTA and it works very well.

You should have get the Satio. Know why? With Satio you'll going to get the best of both worlds. SE's multimedia+Nokia's OS. That easy, no brainer.

Posted by Mr Miyagi
titus1 thanks for the comment, but i would rather stay completely away from s.e now. i have had enough problems and am happy with my purchase.

thanks for that rifqi thats good to know

Nothing wrong with the n97 and with its firmware upgrade it should fix alot of problems.

Really - apart from inadequate memory, flaky firmaware, self harming camera cover and clueless GPS ? Getting the Care Point lowdown on the Nokia N97 camera glass and GPS and check Nokia's own discussion forums for the howls of anguish. V20 FW whenever it turns up will hopefully sort some problems but can't fix hardware restricitions/design flaws (see N96) I think gonna see this phone deprioritised after N97 mini (the N97 done right) and New Year announcements. They've got 15% discount offers on Facebook and if Mr Miyagi was able to get such a good deal off Nokia themselves seems they want/need to shift it

Any bugs are always updated via a firmware update No mobile phone is around which is problem free. So its normal for a phone to have a bug now and again that is why the mobile makers bring out new software updates and that is why your warranty is given on the mobile to help cover any costs and fix anything free of charge warranty related:). Regarding the camera glass well if you aint taking care of your product then clearly you will have some damage on it. If the design was so bad don't you think Nokia would have immediately taken this product off the production line and did a recall? anyways I am not going to get into an argument about this.

From the experience my friend has had from this phone and his other friend has been absolutely great, and a good review on gsm arena and other forums is good enough information for me for this phone. Regarding the deal I think its a good enough deal especially since I have not seen any discount being given on any facebook site. I could have easily paid full price for this handset, if i didn't ask for a discount. So I am happy with that too. If you don't like this handset or got nothing better to say then I suggest you say nothing in this thread. Keep this thread to the topic it is already on. Thanks

Nothing personal and I sincerely hope you enjoy your new phone. I myself have a N97 at the moment.

My reply was to Bonovox's msg and was I believe right on topic you just disagree with me which is fair enough and your God given right to do. And I do think the price you got is really good where do I say other?

Enjoy

Oh ok snoflake. Thought it was in reply to my message. How long u had ur phone for

Posted by Mr Miyagi
reading more about the camera glass looks like this was for the earlier n97's and Nokia themselves have admitted the issue and are covering the camera glass replacement foc under warranty.

yup the camera cover problem occurred on the early production runs. i've had my N97 for 3 months now and not a scratch on my lens. it does help to always keep it clean though, and not just the lens but also the side that is exposed when the lens is covered since that is usually where the dirt comes from.

i'm quite happy with my N97. it's not perfect, but then no device is. i suggest the first thing you do is to install handy taskman. so long as you manage your RAM properly, then you should be ok. also, keep in mind that some widgets cause stability problems when you keep them on your homescreen. i personally leave them off the screen and therefore don't experience any freezes or things of the sort.

also, install all apps in your mass memory if possible. if you can, uninstall the pre-installed ones and reinstall them in the mass memory, as space on the C: drive is limited and very valuable. you can download most of the pre-installed stuff from the ovi store, but before you do, make sure that you configure your ovi store settings so that it installs apps in you mass memory. the only app i recall that i couldn't download again was the amazon.com widget, so if you want to keep that, then just leave it on your C: drive.

good luck and enjoy your new toy!

Thank you for your advice How would I be able to tell my N97 would be from the latest batch. I mean I have ordered it directly from Nokia. Would I be able to type in a code on the phone to find out if its a new batch one? I know the link which quoted: How to tell if your N97 has the old design: You'll know - you'll have scratches already. If your lens is clear of physical scratches then relax, you're OK. (If you look very closely then you can tell the two designs apart - one has a visible gap between slide and camera glass.)

But can I check any other way, apart from waiting to see if a scratch will appear? I aim to keep this phone in the case I ordered for it from Nokia so that should keep it protected right? Also what about the initial charge of the phone? how long should that be?

Thanks again

Miyagi

phone not arrived yet, not till Monday being delivered by UPS wish they delivered on Saturdays. Spoke to Nokia about the camera glass thingy, they said it was affected a certain network, guess he meant vodafone, but said that all batches that are being sent out now and the updated newest ones.

Posted by Bonovox
If there is a UPS depot near you take some ID see if its there and go and collect it. I did that once with City Link with a Vodafone delivery.

Posted by Mr Miyagi
Bonovox can't do that at the moment mate. need to wait to get the tracker number etc for the parcel from Nokia first, so just waiting on the email from them.

Posted by senninha
i'm not sure about how to check when your phone was made. on SE phones, the sticker under the battery indicates the week and year it was made, but i don't know if nokia does that and i'm a little lazy to check under my battery right now. but i really wouldn't worry if i were you. the defective units were those made in july and earlier i believe and i'm pretty sure nokia will be sending you a fresh unit. so long as you see a gap between the lens and the cover, you're fine.

i also forgot to mention, if you want to recover more space on your C: drive, do a hard reset. i did it on my phone and recovered an additional 15MB, although you will lose the amazon.com widget.

the reason you would want to free up space is because apps like quickoffice install on your C: drive and use up a lot of space if ever you decide to update the app to the most recent version. nokia apps like nokia messaging and ovi contacts also only install on C: and hog a lot of space, so unless you really need them, i'd stay away from them.
