20MP Camera-Phones in the Near Future!

The processors are under development and should be released in 2010. So hopefully we can see devices embedded with such chips next year.

Hopefully not. More does not mean better. It's just adding more noise to the images and will eat up more space on your memory card with 10+ MB per photo. 10 megapixels is good enough for A3 paper prints if you are using a good lense. I am using a 12 megapixel DSLR on a daily basis in addition to a good A3 printer and would never buy a new camera just to have more megapixels.

eats a lot of memory per picture taken,

I hope someone comes up with a 3MP camera phone with the sensor being the same size and technology of the 20MP one. Now that would be great quality

Why not? Just keep it coming...

Is there 16mb sd card released yet? 20mp camera phone just fine if it has big memory, and high capacity of sd card.

I don't see this happening. How often within the mainstream of digital cameras you see on the high street do you see 20 mega pixels? Answer is never. The most i seen is 14 and that's more than enough. Higher than that is only for people wishing to print huge posters or for other purposes. In such tiny lenses and sensors it will just mean noise. I don't want that many mega pixels in a phone and i hope the mega pixel race ends soon. Yes i have seen higher but only in DSLR. Even 5 mega pixels is great and can produce great pictures. Even 3 mega pixels is capable. I do not see the point. Most cameras i see on the high street don't go that high. [ This Message was edited by: Bonovox on 2009-10-13 10:04 ]

I can still remember being impressed with the K850i/W800i, with just a 2-megapixel sensor. It had good optics, which SE then ruined by using a smaller, fixed focus, sensor on many newer models - which suddenly made 2MP look bad.

Then came 3MP, and then the cheaper sensor that looked awful (sadly, SE still use this sensor on many handsets today).

At 5MP, the noise started to appear and heavy post-processing that tried to improve the photos resulted in horrid results when viewed at 100%. Okay, so reducing to fit on screen or a 6x4 postcard was fine - but, why the need for the extra pixels then?

At 8MP, SE seemed to have found a pretty decent sensor and the C905 was a good phone let down by SERIOUS hardware problems that really damaged their reputation. I've never seen photos as good with the W995 or the Aino, so have to assume they've changed the sensor again - or not got the algorithms correct for using only an LED flash.

But, the Satio, is awesome. I have to admit that the Pixon 12 is pretty amazing too, and that must be more down to the current technology than the pixels. I am sure that if a modern 3, 5 or 8MP sensor was made now, it would be much closer to its digital camera counterpart.

However, at the end of the day, the overall quality will come down to how much light the camera can capture - and that means we'll need to see bigger sensors. As the electronics get smaller, and manufacturers get more room 'left over' perhaps we'll see some real improvements - and that won't be by simply going up to 20, 30 or 40MP.

Yes well said. Although reading recent reviews of the Pixon 12 i think the photos it takes are currently in my view the best there is. But i am yet to see full proper pictures from the Satio. And with that in mind with it being a smartphone lets hope SonyEricsson have got this one right. If they don't then i think its not going to look good for them from now on. People are counting on them to finally produce a decent top end smartphone lets hope this is the one. Sorry going off topic. I have 2 dedicated digital cameras at home as well as my phone. One is a cheap knock about 50 quid Canon quite old 5 mega pixel camera. The pictures its takes are so good which goes to show you don't need for everyday use such high mega pixel count. But i guess as technology advances we are going to see more and more amazing tech built into tiny devices. Perhaps we need Q from James Bond he made them SonyEricsson phones seem more advanced than they are in reality lol

I think as the years passes by, the technology of image sensors gets better and better, lots of people assumed that more pixels = more noise, while it may hold true for some camera phones it doesn't apply to the rest. Sony have been producing CMOS phone sensors that constantly improves in sensitivity. with aino's sensor being a Sony 1/3.2" sensor compared to K750's Sony 1/4.0", one may say the latter has better image since it has bigger photosites (lesser pixel density despite smaller physical size of the sensor) but upon looking at aino's samples on Mobile-review the megapixel myth seems to be contradicted.
