Samsung Launches 12MP Amoled Cameraphone In Korea

The name probably doesn't tell you a lot, but according to Samsung, the AMOLED 12M is the world's first 12-megapixel camera-phone with built-in 3x optical zoom. There were other 12-megapixel models before including the Pixon12 and Sony Ericsson Satio, but the big deal here is the optical zoom feature. This lets you zoom in on the subject without degrading picture quality as compared with digital zoom.

Going by its 115.8 x 56.9 x 16.3mm dimensions, the handset is quite chunky and looks more like a digicam with phone functions. However it redeems itself with a generous shutter button and a mode dial for switching between the various shooting modes.

The AMOLED 12M, which ships in Korea early October, will have a 3.3-inch 800 x 480-pixel AMOLED touchscreen, 1,280 x 720-pixel video capture, touch autofocus tracking, T-DMB receiver and a pair of Xenon and LED flashes. There're also 4GB of onboard flash memory and a microSD card slot that supports up to 32GB. Unfortunately, the company doesn't have any plans to retail it outside of Korea yet.

wow!! tempting...
samsung stepping ahead..... good.

this time it's something new. like Samsung said, it's not a cameraphone but the first compact camera with phone function

It's actually the second camera with phone functions. Samsung did manufacture an 8mp camera with phone functions back in 2004 if I'm not mistaken.

If the picture quality is as good as a dedicated camera then it is special.

Small preview at gsmarena. Not impressed by photo quality! Its pre-production though, so its not the final quality I hope.
For me it's not worth waiting for this over the satio if the photo quality ain't better.

I think you're talking about the B600? Wasnt that in 2006 though? But ye it isnt the 1st Camera with phone function from SAMSUNG.

Posted by Dups!
I was mistaken, the year was 2006 and the first Samsung camera phone I was referring to was a 10mp named SCH-600.

The side view somewhat looks like the C905... imo

Its too big for a phone but ten outta ten for effort. I hardly ever bother using any zoom anyway on even my dedicated digital camera. So for me Satio will do It looks very much like one of their normal cameras in their N range. Though Samsung do make great cameras with fantastic picture quality. But for me its just way too big. What gets me though is some of these camera phones have better specs than dedicated digital cameras. Crazy.

No Wifi, No Gps and No Radio

Guess they were concentrating on the camera bit more than other features

Samsung lens is not impressive anyway, and the image quality on this phone just suck. and GSMArena people were blind when they said the image quality is excellent. I wonder how many people are going with this phone over their cheaper and better performing digicams.

They've had several models of camera phones with optical zoom before the SCH-600:

SPH-2300 (3 MP)
SCH-S250 (5 MP)
SCH-V770 (7 MP)

Or maybe YOUR the blind one. You've never used the device, yet you moan about its pic quality...what a joke.

Any more info about this phone coming to Europe?

That's a camera pretending to be a phone, not a camera-phone
I wonder when the MP race will end

Posted by Bonovox
Imo phone cameras should stop at 12mp. But i reckon they will push it to 14. I dont see many compact cameras on the market higher than 14 unless its something special like a DSLR or something. I have seen 36mp cameras but thats for real pros wanting to print big. We wont be seeing 24 or 36mp in phones no way.

Posted by mriley
theres no use for an MP count above 10, they just use it as a marketing ploy as a LOT of people think MP = quality of the image, both my brothers compact cam and my dads highbrid G10 canon are both 14.7 MP

Posted by Bonovox
My brother still uses a 5 mega pixel Sony camera he bought oh god many years ago now. It has a Sony lens on it only 5 mp and its pictures are so good. He uses a 9mp semi pro for main one but the Sony is a knock about camera. My Sony N1 8.1mp camera with touch screen has rather average quality compared to the 5mp model

Posted by mriley
yeah there are loads and loads of stories like that when people buy a higher MP camera than their current version and find out its worse
I remember reading about it in the "Megapixel Myth" website

Yes you can just see the gullible customers in the phones shops being told about how 12 mega pixel camera phone is always better just to get the sale. Whereas we know better

That picture is taken with the lens fully extended ! When not in use, the lens is flush with the body The overall cell phone size, is not much bigger then the Satio ! The lens and not the pixel count is what I am after ! The 'world' version will have a new graphic chip (1920x1080p@30fps) + all the bells and whistles of a ultra modern smart cell. I am not sure about the implementation of the new bluetooth hispeed standard. Either way, you chaps seem to know less then what I already manage to dig. It looks like Samsung want to make this THE cell for 2010

it looks like that never available to europe B600 thing,
and first pic it looks more like a digi camera then a mobile lol

Clearly not as it's only released in one country
