Network operator O2's data network has experienced an outage across the UK.

Internet and multimedia message services have been disrupted for all of the firm's customers who are on monthly contracts.

O2 is not disclosing the cause of the outage but says that its engineers are aware of the cause of the problem and are working to correct it.

The network holds an exclusive contract for the Apple iPhone, which drives much of its data network traffic.

It will also be the exclusive outlet for the Palm Pre, widely touted as the next credible threat to iPhone's stranglehold on the smartphone market, which will create an additional large load of data network traffic .

O2 said that Blackberry handsets are not affected by the outage.

The BBC has received messages indicating mixed network availability in regions across the UK, with reported problems also on O2's Pay & Go tariffs while several respondents reported no problems at all.

O2 was unable to say when the problem would be fixed.

I can confirm it does not affect Blackberrys as that is how this was posted.

lol, but no... I think I can live with an occassional outage rather than going to extreme and giving up the iphone!
in any case, I still have an N5800 with a tmob sim for such emergencies

edit: btw, the data is working now

I want rid of it so I can move onto a cheaper tarrif, only been on it for 3 months though

Well perhaps a case for cancelling if they fail to provide service anytime soon. If it drags out and normal service is not resumed call them.
