Hi guys, anyone ordered themselves a 3gS? If so what's your first impressions (when you get it tomorrow). I would like to keep this different from the general discussion.
I ordered mine earlier this week and am porting my number. Today I have had a shed load of texts from o2 (and I was on virgin), but no shipping info?
This is my 1st upgrade since the 2g 2nd model came out and I have never had internet on the move before. I am quite looking forward to it arriving.

I've not bothered, I'm going to stick with 3.0 on my 3G for a while and then get the 3GS

So who has one what's the verdict was it worth it? I see mass has one but new that was coming anyway and I haven't been here! Lol

I just got mine through the post.
Was a bit pissed it doesnt come with a dock like the 2g one did, but it has a new plug, smaller then a normal electrical plug but takes a usb! Very impressive, I am surprised we haven't seen things like this before?
Posted by Boinng
The 3G didn't come with a dock either, and it too had an AC adaptor which essentially just turns your 3 pin socket into a USB port.. but apparently the 3GS version is smaller still?

well, obviously its much of a muchness being so similar to the 3G, but I can notice some speed improvements in safari for sure, and in google maps.
I love the compass. In fact even though I carry the iphone, and the 5800 with garmin in it, I still always carry a small pocket compass and so thats now one less thing in my pocket.
can't wait to get home tonight to load it up. Finally I won't have to be always trying to fit my daily video podcasts into my last 2GB of space! Unfortunately that will be a late night session as we're going to see Pet Shop Boys at the o2 first

I am just re-storing from my 2g back up now. I haven't used it yet, but I am getting a shed load of pop-ups and texts from the new sim. I saw the new 3.0 picture messaging service yesterday and that really is nice!
I half wish I splashed for the 32gb model, as I actually have a good 28gb of music, but lets be honest if I filled that I would not listen to all the music.
The restore is going pretty fast so far, done about 6gb in 20min. On the 2g originally it was very slow.
Indeed the new plug is smaller. Between 1-2cm tall.
Also worth noting the headphones have the volume up and down keys on now. Great little function along with the play and pause as when listening to music that is the no 1 reason why I have to get it out of my pocket. It also has a slidey spacer that attaches to one cord, and attach to the other cord of the headphones. I do not know the reason for this.

but its not really all about listening to all the music at the same time, its more about listening to anything you fancy from your music collection when you fancy it.. .not when you go and re-synch your choices
32gb will probably keep me going for another year!

Don't rub it in Mass - some of us are still living in 8GB for a good while yet!

Why do you always carry a compass??
I did quite often but not always, but like yourself my device (G1) has replaced that now so I always have it.
There is a skymap app available on Android which shows the stars exactly as you look at the sky with the phone, I don't know if it is available for the iPhone but worth a look to see!

The number one reason I take mine out of my pocket is to FF or RWD tracks. On
phones the volume keys double as skip keys but not in the iPhone 3G - how about on the S ?
A friend of mine taught me how to work out where North is by using the sun and a wristwatch. Never need a compass again - unless its night time I guess

@nanu, force of habbit I guess. I've always done alot of orienteering (in fact bush walking, canyoning, abseiling, climbing etc) and I just like to know, even in the city, which direction is North (or E, S or W!)
my compass was a little tiny one that can slide onto my watch strap, but my current watch strap is too wide for it

on the headphones of the iphone it has always had a button, press it once and it play/pause, press it 2 times and it skips track, and 3 times back a track. Was pretty cool, thats now been made better with a volume button too.

I am going to sound a bit retarded now.
I got the iphone at work and have my new o2 sim in it and want to connect to the internet. I have full signal and the 3g icon in the corner and data roming turned on, however for some reason I cannot get on to the internet without connecting to a wi-fi network
Do I need to activate it or something?
Posted by masseur
did you get a payg?
mine is payg but the data settings were for a contract phone and I also couldn't get a 3G connection
I had to go to settings > general >network > cellular data network and change the Cellular Data APN to payandgo.o2.co.uk. Originally it was idata.o2.co.uk
I'll be changing mine back once I've got home and synched it as I'll be putting my original contract sim in it

It's been a while since I have been able to pull you up on your spelling and grammar, but here is one fine example.
My watch strap incidentally, is too thin for it.
Posted by Luke-the-magic-man
nope I am on contract for £35 a month with unlimited etc. I thought it would be automatically set up and as I mentioned it shows the 3g logo in the corner?
Posted by masseur
er, thanks fatreg
@Luke, yeah mine showed all the correct signs that 3G was available. Took a phone call to O2 to get it sorted, suggest you do the same, 2302 from your iphone

That just makes no sense at all Oli! grammar and spelling are somewhat iffy, but pales in insignificance when compared to the sentence structure.

people often say they are fascinated by the interesting word usements that I structure
but lets not get off topic please

Thanks for the number Mas, I called them up once and the guy was totally useless so I just hung up and talked to a lovely woman who gave me some ideas.
Reset the phone, checked the settings but then did a re-set of network settings under the main menu. This fixed the issue and now I can get the internet!
Good times!

Hmm! any pics?
Posted by Topscooby
Yeah, bought a Black 16Gb one today
Its my first iphone and it will be interesting to see how i get on with it.
Bought it on payg as i just don't fancy being tied into a contract in these uncertain times
First impressions are good but only time will tell i suppose.
Posted by bavlondon2
Congrats topscooby. Post up a pic of 2 if you can.
Posted by Topscooby
Well i've had this iphone for just over a day and i love it already
I must admit to being a bit scepticle but i've just got home after a meal out down the pub, and its the first time EVER that everyone was telling me to 'put it away why don't you!' lol
The ease with which i can check my emails and go online is amazing. And guess who managed to get the Lotto results the quickest out of all of us? Yep, me
Its dark right now but i will organise some photos tomorrow and post them up here as requested.

Wow! 28GB of music and needing more space.

Picked up my 3GS today, got it on PAYG, last black 16gb in York O2!
This is my first iPhone since the first gen when I had one from the states before it was out here. Got to say I am very impressed. I haven't even used a 3G so this really was the first time I've used/played with one since the 2G. A lot of the niggles have been sorted out and the overall experience is generally nicer!
I can't believe how small the packaging is and I'm very impressed by the plug adaptor! lol
Also glad you can use any BT headset and A2DP now otherwise my car headunit would have been useless being A2DP and handsfree compatible!
Currently trying every free app going! There is some good stuff out there! I also know someone who is an app reviewer for a certain site who has lots of promo codes so I'm waiting until tuesday incase I buy anything I could get for free!
Changed my tariff the other day due to O2 changing their 18 month £35 tariff. Rang up and swapped my 600 mins 500 texts plus unlimited texts bolt on to 600 mins 1000 texts and unlimited web bolt on. Like Luke it's the first time I've had web on the go and I love it! Really good for checking news, email, forums, facebook all sorts!
Still dissapointed with the restrictions on bluetooth transfers but hey not the end of the world I suppose!
Other than that I'm a happy man! Although that may all change when my credit card bill comes!

anyone got a problem with their battery? I seem to go through mine really fast? I have been abusing the internet, but it seems to go down well fast, nothing like the 2gb one. I do have gps on and 3g mind...
Posted by whentheleveebreaks
Mine is better than the 3G battery wise.
I am so impressed with this phone, the speed for viewing website is incredible, renders pages so much faster than the 3G (which wasn't exactly slow).

i think i am getting a bit envious of you 3Gs owners

Did i read right this new iphone has an OLED display? Is it better and whats it like in sunlight?
Posted by masseur
no, that was just one of the many rumours
it has the same screen as before and it works very well in sunlight
Posted by Bonovox
Oh ok that clears that one up
Posted by masseur
I've noticed one issue in 3.0 when watching video podcasts.
Sometime the screen doesn't respond as it should to bring up the timebar and other options and so I can't advance further into the video.
If I turn to portrait it all appears but again, sometimes touching the screen works and sometimes it doesn't
If I exit the postcast app, and start again, then all is well
Posted by Luke-the-magic-man
I cant say I have had that problem. One I have had mind you is the contacts. If I am sending a text and start typing a friends name their name comes up and their name and number but it is repeated as a 2nd contact? When I go to my contacts I only have one of each contact and that only has one number in it?
Posted by masseur
I see a single contact repeated, but each repeat is a different mobile number or email address etc
Posted by Luke-the-magic-man
thats how it should be, but some reason mine shows as each contact twice?
Posted by garlic_bread
I get the Repeat for the same number.

Just received my 3g s. Personally it's not the greatest change for me, moving onto 3gs from 2g is hardly a 10% change. Where as when I upgraded my K800i to Nokia N95 8Gig It was a massive jump but unfortunately this time its nowhere even near.
The best thing about the 3g s is its packaging. It's like a small perfume box, really cool.
Posted by Bonovox
God that dont say much for the 3GS. Would you say the O2 network is not upto the speeds then?

first lol at your packaging remark... but fair play I have always been impressed by apples packaging. I think they could have made this box even smaller to be fair or put a nice dock in the box (had to order one tonight)
Anyway, I have to say the change between a nokia and se would be noticable... I think that is just a bit obvious lol. I think one can say the 3gs is a shit load faster and if you use the functions on the 3gs fully then there is a lot of potential. I like lots of the new small features like camera and picture messaging.
Posted by rule_breaker
Still not worth the money people are having to pay for it, It really isnt!
Posted by Luke-the-magic-man
for my battery issues I ran it down to 0% and am now giving it a full charge. The apple support site has mixed reviews of this method, but worth trying? Il keep you all posted on the results.
Posted by Bonovox
Seriously though you say its faster fair enough but the features on this phone are still years behind some other handsets. They only just put on MMS 3 mega pixel camera video recording and still restrictions with Bluetooth. Hardly a huge leap. Sorry.
Posted by masseur
lol, I used to understand the non believers

but now, after 2 major versions, they appear as just trollers who just don't get it, and just don't want to get it
... and actually, thats just fine as we're not here to convert the non believers, but a little actual experiential evidence tends to speak for itself that similar features can actually be better implemented
still, each to their own so its better that people who don't get it take the longer route until their final realisation of what works best

Yeah but so many times i play with the iphone in store or play with 2 of my friends who have them. I simply just dont like Apple products and the iphone just does not do it for me. Yes it has a great interface and internet but beyond that for me i find it nothing much more. So many other phones do so much more to me and better. I played with my friends iphones many times just dont like them. And i hate itunes. Anyway i shall get off this thread before i start another row lol
Posted by masseur
lol, thats not a prob... each to their own (always)... your opinion doesn't have to make a row in this topic unless that is your intention
so enjoy what you like but don't feel that you *have* to reply to each and every iphone post that you clearly have no real interest in
