Not relevant at all sorry, but I want to see if anyone agrees?

I just want to say that the iPhone's design is now just under 3 years old, June 2007. A 3.5" display is nothing compared to the HD2 for example. Yes, what Boinng said about the GUI being easy to use etc is true, but it shouldn't be. Apple should (and can) come up with the ultimate phone, boasting value (£30 a month ish), power (HD2 ish specs) and a good UI. This is a combination which is possible, but Apple just got greedy. They should make even a slight change to the design of the phone everytime they bring a new one out, but no, that costs too much and they might lose money . Apple, losing money, am I going mad??

Another thing is, yes, it was their first attempt at a phone, and if it wasn't for advertising, it would have been a faliare, in fact, in my honest opinion, it is. I know lots of people who have an iPhone, and if you ask them why, you get the most pathetic answers ever:
"It looks good when your on the phone"
"Its cool"
"Its good for sat nav"
All of the above might be true, but its still not a good enough reason to buy a £400 phone. And when you do ask the people if they like it, most say I would get something else at the end of my contract. Some even carry a sh!tty old nokia around with them too.
They miss out the simple stuff, such as copy and paste, and have to bring out an update to get it. Childish
Oh, and the last thing, if you ask them about the app store, well, nobody seems to know what it is, because of jailbreaking. There is not one person I know who has an iPhone (out of over 20) that do have one, who has not jailbroken their phone because "the apps are a rip off". Speaks for itself, if you spend £400 on a phone, why don't you get a £20 iTunes voucher to get you started, the reason, greedyness.

Sort it out Apple, its childish
Rant over
Cheers

Leaving aside all the thousands of free apps available in the Appstore, most of the paid apps are pence. Literally pence. £0.59p is the most popular price point for games, a real quality app might be as much as £1.79, your full-on massive productivity suite might be £2.99, £5 tops. Now I'm sorry but anyone describing those kinds of prices as a "rip off" isn't going to buy any software for any device at any price, if they can possibly help it. They're just giving themselves an incredibly weak moral argument for pirating apps, and of course it's actually the developers that end up getting ripped off by that, not Apple.

We can all start quoting anecdotes from friends with an iPhone - I have an iPhone, I know at least ten people personally with an iPhone, and only one has jailbroken - purely to unlock the phone to another network. They all buy and use apps from the appstore. If you asked them why they bought an iPhone they might say things like "it's cool", but I've a good idea that they might also talk about the games, they might also talk about the internet browsing (and net-centric apps like Facebook etc), email, and a lot of other stuff. The key thing is they all love them. That's not me making sweeping statements on their behalf, or assuming that everyone loves the iPhone - it's just a statement of fact. Everyone I know with an iPhone, loves their iPhone, and spends more time using it, and playing with it, then I've ever seen them use another phone.

The iPhone didn't have copy and paste when it launched... well, that point was put to bed a year ago when Apple updated *all* iPhones to have copy and paste, and dozen other new features beside. Should it have been there from the start? Well ideally of course it should, but software development doesn't always work that way. Just ask Microsoft - they're about to launch Windows Phone Series 7 without the exact same feature, in 2010, after supporting it in all previous forms of Windows Mobile. Go figure.

Could the screen be better, could the design have changed more, could they have done x, y, z to be more like the HD2 or [insert competitor here] - yes of course. But it's a fact that the iPhone has never competed on pure hardware specs, it's competed by being a unique package of interface and design combined with a wealth of third party apps and extendability. As an iPhone user I'd say the Appstore was probably one of the phone's most defining features, and you have to wonder if the Appstore would have grown and been supported as strongly over the last couple of years if Apple had been changing the screen resolution and doubling the processor speed every six months. There's a lot to be said for having a consistent platform, especially when you're conjuring up that application platform for developers out of thin air.

Is it all down to the advertising... no. Not a bit of it. I was using touchscreen smartphones for years before the iPhone, and none of them could hold a candle to the 3G I have now. Apple simply created something better, and everyone else is still playing catchup from where I'm sitting.

However, WM7 does have copy and paste after all

Just an icebreaker.. iPhone tops the recent survey made by J.D. Powers and Associates for its overall customer satisfaction leaving all its competitors behind. Among the brands surveyed are Apple, HTC, Nokia, Palm, BlackBerry and Samsung. iPhone received top marks in every category except for battery life. Blackberry takes the 2nd place and Samsung as the third placer. Nice to know

the sky news app was updated today and now provides live Sky News TV (unfortunately within the new tab for the election )

I used to watch the Sky News on the Sky Mobile TV app but you have to pay £6/month for that so I cancelled after the initial 3 month trial.

for more TV, don't forget the iphone.tvcatchup.com page you can surf to on the iphone browser

Question,

I have a 3GS from England (no idea wich provider/ can't check firmware)

Is is possible for me to unlock it and use it in the Netherlands?

Cheers Maarten

Posted by masseur
it doesn't matter where your iphone comes from as any jailbreak/unlock solution works worldwide

BUT... if you have updated to the latest 3.1.3 firmware (check in Settings > General > About) then there is no currently available public solution to jailbreak and unlock though there are a couple of solutions that have been demonstrated and which maybe available soon.

If you're on a firmware earlier than 3.1.3 then google blackra1n as that will do it for you very easily

Posted by SUPERezel
Thanks for the info, but how can i check firmware if phone only accepts activation by itunes? I can't reach the settings option

Posted by masseur
ah! I see...

the only way I know is to install the iPhone SDK on a mac. Xcode can read the firmware and UDID details from an un-activated iphone

in any case, I'm sure that blackra1n only works on an already-activated iphone. Are you not able to activate it at all?

Posted by SUPERezel
Ah, thats a shame...
I only have the phone (no UK operator sim)

Posted by masseur
I've been doing a bit of googling. looks like there are methods for activating (hacktivation?) which would then enable to you to unlock.

I'll let someone else assist there as I've only worked with already activated phones

Posted by SUPERezel
thnx masseur!

Will also try some googling!

Posted by masseur
good luck with that

in the meantime... I've now seen a few apps terminating unexpectedly and the Thomson Reuters app always exits unexpectedly when I click on any story. Its the only app that I have that is currently not working at all. All others work fine with just the occasional crash

Also, iTunes cannot organise the apps in the normal way and it also cannot backup the OS4 phone due to this error:-

also, I've found that playing a video podcast now has the option to show the text that describes the podcast

Posted by Domecot
A friend who owns a 3GS asked me if Apple will demand money for the OS 4 update? Since i am not a big iPhone follower i didn't know so i am turning to you experts so what do you think?

Posted by masseur
iPhone updates are always free. you only have to pay a small fee for ipod touch updates

Opera mini 5 has now been released on iPhone (iTunes link)

Posted by tranced
Thought you'd knew this already

Posted by masseur
I heard it was coming some time back, but it was only made available on the app store today

http://my.opera.com/community/blog/opera-mini-iphone

Posted by whentheleveebreaks
DoWnloaded it today, it's fast but very very rubbish

Posted by masseur
agree.. its rubbish. I wouldn't even say its fast.
I've uninstalled it already

Posted by julias
Could i ask why its rubbish?

Posted by masseur
ok, perhaps I didn't give it enough of a go last night as I couldn't really see the point of it, so I installed it again this morning to try on the way to work.

while it worked perfectly on wifi at home last night, it wouldn't load pages on tmobile 3g. I googled this and it seems many are having the same problem and the suggestion is to change the advanced protocol setting from Socket to HTTP, then it seems to work again.

for me it loads noticeably slower than safari, especially on 3g

other than that it is fairly comparable in that you can have full screen viewing, multiple pages open at the same time, history etc.

cut, copy and paste functionality does not work in opera mini, except for the url.

its representation of many pages seems awful. compare safari's view of esato's latestposts page with that of Opera mini, and on opera mini I can pinch to make the display any smaller, or in fact bigger

Also, I loaded BBC main page (same URL) on both and I couldn't get the same page displayed despite doing it multiple times. Safari's page showed the same as IE on my PC so perhaps the Opera mini page is somehow delayed due to their "optimisation"?

so in general I'm not impressed and will stick with Safari

Posted by whentheleveebreaks
Same here. Seems to be produced very lazily, zooming is disgraceful, some websites, like my own, dont work at all, there seems to be big problems with css.

Not surprised it was approved, just shows how good the mobile version of Safari is in my opinion.

Posted by tranced
One million downloads

Apple said “Yes”, and iPhone users around the world said, “Yes, please”. Opera Mini was downloaded more than one million times in its first day of availability in each market. Opera Mini is currently the number one iPhone app in the 22 featured Apple App Stores on their site, as of 8 a.m. CET today.

Posted by masseur
good. maybe that will give them incentive to put more effort into making it a better app!

Posted by tranced
Oh well, maybe a new build of this version will be released soon. You don't seem to be pleased with it.

Posted by masseur
..and here is that new build. I'll try it out this morning but the change list doesn't sound like it addresses the concerns we've had here...

Posted by anonymuser
Have to say I have zero interest in Opera on the iPhone, it just seems completely irrelevant - like fitting an outboard motor on the Queen Mary. I imagine Opera will be quite pleased with all the fuss and free publicity they've gained through this release, and it doesn't surprise me that lots of people have tried it - why not, it's free - but quite why anyone would use this over Safari as their main browser is beyond me.

To be fair, I've always hated the idea of Opera mini - everything you do or see getting mangled through someone else's server - but on the iPhone it's even more of an answer to a question that nobody asked.

I thought this was funny...

It's been a while since I've posted on Esato.. Hey Masseur how are you? Is anyone contemplating on the new iphone?
well, once there is a jailbreak for it I mean..

I'm happy with my 3GS and although I don't need to be jailbroken, as I am on AT&T's network... I wouldn't have it any other way... Once I jail broke my phone, it opened a whole new world.. LOL just like Disney LOL..

Posted by masseur
hey! hows it going?

getting the new iphone is a forgone conclusion for me. I can live with jailbreaking as the app store caters for all my needs these days. I'm wondering if the Apple store will start selling them unlocked now there is no exclusivity

Mind you, I was shown the desire in the office the other day and I was fairly impressed, but I still can't imagine giving up the iphone.

Posted by REO
@Masseur.. I'm good thanks! and I'm with you on the iphone. I'll probably hang on to my 3GS and wait and see how the new iphone favors. Then, maybe, just maybe.. go for the new iphone once the devteam or Geohot creates a jailbreak for it.

But I love my 3GS so much, that I highly doubt it. Plus, I'm not certain of the pros and cons of the new iphone. selling my 3GS could mean kicking myself later, if the new iphone has more cons then pros... LOL...

it'll be worth upgrading to the new OS 4 when its officially released as that will give some good benefits even before upgrading the hardware.

I'm running the OS4 beta and things like the multi tasking and folders do look good, though the battery life on my 3GS has degraded dramatically so I hope they sort that out before release. The new iphone allegedly has a bigger battery.

I have felt a thousand regrets since selling my 3GS. Even more after buying two Nokias for the money since these turned out to be real turds.

Now I am only waiting for the iPhone HD (as tnkgrl called it). If it's too expensive then I will get the 3GS again.

After several hundred charges (and/or being in high temperatures, which lithium ion batteries don't like), all rechargeable batteries basically get severely reduced battery life, requiring replacement of the battery. A bigger battery won't stop this problem. It's the nature of the chemistry that causes this.

No rechargeable battery lasts forever. The chemistry degrades the more it's charged (and heat kills it), eventually resulting in severely reduced battery life.

It's unfortunate that Apple require you to send it back to them for replacement (unless you want to do it yourself), but of course this is a money exercise for them, hoping that most of their customers don't notice (and they don't; most people think rechargeable batteries last forever).

lol, thanks, I'm aware of all that ... but this was an overnight change in battery life immediately upon updating to OS4 beta. I'm not the only one who noticed it as there's a whole topic in the developer forums about it too

Oh I see. So it's that bad, eh.
Maybe with time they will have the code optimised.

I traded my 3G for a 3GS last week - strange timing I know, what with the HD on its way, but I knew the resale value of my old non-multitasking 3G would drop like a stone as soon as OS4 and the new iPhone hit. As it was, ebaying the old phone made me more than enough to afford a 3GS on the best value 18mth contract available, so I'm happy.

Anyway, on the subject of batteries - I can honestly say my 18mth old 3G's battery was performing exactly the same as it did when I first got it, and I've no doubt it would (and for its new owner, will) carry on for a good few years yet. I've always felt the "non-removable battery" issue was a complete non-issue, and the trusty 3G proved just that.

My 3GS handset which was replaced starting having battery problems within 1 month... and when I took it to them they said we wont replace the battery and gave me another refurbished handset... So it is a hassle...

Posted by masseur
I replaced ny 3G last year due to dust in the screen, not long before the 3GS came out.

The replacement I got was in perfect condition which couldn't be said about the one I gave them (apart from the dust).

I'm thinking about making some reason to do that again this year as I'll be selling my 3GS as soon as I get the new version

So you got an (effectively) new phone rather than just a replacement battery - how is that a hassle? To tell you the truth Apple quality control is proving very poor - I exchanged my first 3GS because of a yellow gradient on the screen, and now I'm noticing an uneven backlight at the top edge of the replacement's screen, so I'm getting this one swapped tomorrow as well. These aren't refurbs either!

It's a bit annoying having to swap for a second time, but at least with itunes backup/restore nothing's really lost. That's one of my favourite things about the iphone actually.

Posted by SE-Naz
I have had to swap 4 iPhones....

1 Crack
2 Crack
3 Button
4 Battery

All within 5 month period...

And for the backup... It still takes time to restore... depending on how much you have on your phone... It use to take me around 2HRS to set up... On top of the 1HR journey and 30MINS in the Store and the money for travel... So yes it is a hassle...

Posted by anonymuser
Like I say, the quality control's not there and that's a shame. But still, the backup/restore works better with the iPhone than any other phone I've had - true, it's a bit of a hassle, but better than having to just wipe and start all over again from scratch.

My 3G developed a small crack above the silent switch after just over a year - out of warranty but maybe I'd have been able to get it changed still if I made enough fuss - but I couldn't really be bothered, it was barely noticeable and the phone was perfect in every other way. I'll keep swapping my 3GS until I get a perfect one though, and I hope all this returns data is getting back to somebody at Apple who can tighten things up. I bought a Macbook Pro last year and the first one of those came through with a factory-installed dent in the aluminium - not good enough!

I had a 3GS for about four months and the only complaint I had was that the chrome detail around the phone was easily scratched. Don't use the phone if you haven't shaved as beard stubble is hard enough to make marks in the chrome.

Posted by SE-Naz
You are one of the lucky ones...

As when I went in to get my phone sorted... I was told that the cracking is a known issue which they will not be dealing with so if it happens we will replace during warranty period only... This is not good... as they know they have an issue but there not going to sort it out at the production level...

Who said APPLE are better? There not, they have many issues just like other manufacturers...

No kidding?
I hate chrome accents (or any kind of thin coatings, actually - especially gloss). They always wear away or mark easily.

I am very impatiently waiting for the new iPhone.

WWDC is June 7th so about a month for it to be announced.

Posted by REO
How many of you carry your iphone in your pocket and do you have problems with dust underneath the screen?

I'd love to carry mine in my pocket. I do, once in a blue moon (but I'm afraid), I've heard stories of dust getting underneath the screen. Is this even true? if not, then I would definitely toss my leather holster.

Please advise or share stories. Thanks!

Posted by masseur
I've never used a case with any of my iphones. If I'm wearing a business shirt then the iphone sits in the shirt pocket otherwise its in my trouser pockets.

My 3G a year ago did get dust in the screen but Apple happily replaced it for that reason.

My 3GS, which I've had since the day it came out, has zero dust
