Posted by ofiaich
Hi masseur!

strange because I am logged into the UK store..!!

Not sure if Lesbian Vampire Killers is a good free app for children!!

edit... reconnected to iTunes now, and sure enough, Jason Mraz has been ousted by the Lesbian Vampire Killers!!

its a 15 rating according to iTunes and its also a £10.99 purchase so I suppose its not bad for a freebie.

I'll watch it sometime soon and maybe give some feeback on whether it was worth the 1.2gb download

The Daily Mirror paper today has a section on the iphone war. It compares Orange Vodafone and O2 Tesco tariffs in one section. Tesco only one with 12 month tariff. Have no link

hello can someone plz tell me if 32GB iphone 3gs is worth it for 500 pound?

Posted by anonymuser
This is perhaps slightly off topic in the 3G S thread, but anyone with the older iPhone 3G may be interested in the "iVideoCamera" app now available in the Appstore - as the name suggests, this is a video recording app for any iPhone without an inbuilt video camera.

I bought this for 59p a few weeks ago when the quality of the app was quite poor - producing "video" of just 3fps - but an update last week has now brought this up to a slightly more respectable 10fps, and added a raft of tools for uploading and sharing video with Youtube, Facebook etc. There's also a "high resolution" 320×427 option, although this drops the recording time drastically.

This kind of hacky approach to video recording has been available I know through Cycorder to jailbroken phones for some time, but this is a seemingly well supported app that's available direct from the Appstore with no jailbreaking necessary - worth 59p I think.

Sorry for slightly off topic:

Any of you iPhonerizers giving credence to these rumours surfacing of April release for new 4G?

Posted by masseur
to fill out what the rumours are:-

dual core
oled screen
video calling
removable battery

I'd be surprised otherwise there would already be the odd leaked (if blurry) picture
these rumours seem to be based on the fact that google is pushing ahead fast with android but I'm not convinced thats enough for apple to change the game plan it has had since launch

Posted by anonymuser
Agreed with masseur - although an April release would be great for me (the very month my 3G contract is up) I can't see Apple ditching the summer timetable that's worked so well for them so far, and rushing something like this out. If 3GS sales were running out of steam then maybe, but there's been no sign of that.

Aside from that, the rumoured specs just sound incongruous - the sort of thing a fevered gadget hound might get excited about, but Apple wouldn't touch. I find it hard to believe that a dual core processor would be at all practical in terms of battery life, video calling has always been the smartest thing that previous iPhones have omitted, and Nexus One aside there's strong arguments against a OLED screens in devices like these, particularly when the current iPhone's screen has such good daylight visibility - I just can't see Apple making those kind of choices.

Posted by whentheleveebreaks
Im hoping for a new home screen with the 4.0 OS.

At a guess, the new phone will have faster processor, looks like it could have a new GPU. A slight design refresh might be nice but i dont see it changing al that much.

Posted by masseur
yes, the new GPU with full OpenGL 3.2 and OpenCL 1.0 support is a very likely new ingredient and though it hasn't been mentioned alot, I do feel that a slightly larger screen is on the cards.

Given Apple's hesitance to offer official multi tasking due to battery requirements I dount the dual core will come unless they have some miracle battery technology to unveil at the same time, but I have hopes that they will now make multi tasking officially supported as it is probably the one remaining major difference to other manufacturer offerings, and if an exchangeable battery really is on the cards then that is all the more likely IMHO.

I doubt very much about the video calling as even now I know no one who uses this and I'm sure Apple would recognise that. I do think video calling will be more accepted one day, but not for a few years yet

Posted by anonymuser
I suppose video calling is a possibility if the operators push for it, but I can't believe even they are that bothered now, it's just not something most people use whether they have access to it or not. Maybe Apple are about to add some iPhone magic to make it more palatable, but I doubt it.

i'm due another upgrade in March and I'm considering an iPhone this time. Just wondering how the calander app is. I've currently gone back to using my P1i as i like the calander app. Is the iPhones one similar/better etc ? eg. where you can edit an appointment within a series and it doesn't affect the other reoccuring ones or gives you the option to change all reoccuring appointments or just the one. Also can the starting day be changed (my working week starts on a Saturday) ? Would it be a good idea to upgrade to a 32gb 3gS or wait a while until after the summer ?

This message was posted from a WAP device

Posted by masseur
when you edit a repeating calendar entry and click "done" you are prompted with "save for this event only" or "save for future events" so in that way its similar to outlook and what you describe

I can't see an option to change the starting day either in the calendar or in the settings -> calendar. Monday is the start of week in mine. I've just tested and changing the start of week in outlook has no effect on the start of week within the iphone

32g 3GS is a good device. The question really is:- if you are going to buy it on contract in March will you be happy to see probably two revisiions go buy before your contract ends. If you're buying sim free/ebay/esato etc then the question is not so tough as generally iphone hold their value fairly well and you can sell and buy with minimal loss

Posted by Rookwise
I'm already on an 18 month contract and would get the phone for free with what i spend. I get early upgrades as well. My choices would be iPhone, Satio, X10. Wont have another WM phone again either so X2 is out.

iPhone on Vodafone as of tomorrow! Here's hoping for an epic day.

Posted by Bonovox
Anyone got one yet on Vodafone? Their 3G is impressively fast though i had none in my area has not changed since 3G came about.

Posted by Superluminova
@Bonovox

Get yourself one of these mate www.Vodafone.co.uk/SureSignal

I got one last autumn when i moved house and its perfect, went from poor reception to full reception in seconds. Now its only its only £50 its a total bargain, I paid £160!

Super.

Posted by mutleyboy
I would love one of those vodafone gateway things as I keep losing even 2G signal on my iphone in my house (even though other phones have full signal!) but it says you need at least 1MBPS broadband. While we are meant to get 2MBPS here doing speed tests shows that we only ever get about 250KBPS (broadband? dont make me laugh). One of the downsides of living in a rural place, but what is annoying is about 500 yards down the road I would have full 3G and much quicker broadband speeds

Posted by Bonovox
Yes indeed a good option

Posted by snoFlake
How big is the iPhone? Well Jacqui Oatley BBC5 Football commentator has been twittering about how excited she is it's coming to Voda in the UK and getting one and she has just updated that she has been queueing for an hour to get it!

This is not some geek kid and it's the fourth network launch in the UK and shows how much pent up demand there still is for it after three previous networks and it's after Christmas and the new edition is less than six months away.

Remarkable. Apple's sales figures for the last quarter could be absolutely astronomical I think (would include Orange and Tesco launch in UK and other network introductions round the world). Eventually the banwagon will slow but it's sales numbers for the week following Goggle's Nexus One seem to be 20k Nexus One, 1.6million iPhones, phew.

Surely at some point they will stumble but boy oh boy have the incumbent manufaturers done their best to roll over and die for them and it's a great product.

Vodafone sold 50,000 iPhone today.

Posted by Bonovox
Thats also including preorders not 50,000 in stores

Posted by Superluminova
11,000 pre-orders which were either dispatched for home collection or store collection today and 39,000 new sales. not bad for day one.

My little store normally does 2 connections a day, today we did 21!

The new iPhone sonds alot better to it's previous counter parts having a
removable battery will be better for it too...

is the battery rubbish terrible on the older iPhones?
I know if i leave my iPod touch on forgetting it's on the battery runs out quick but it lasts ages if
using it

Vodafone are charging heaps for the iPhone atm,
is there any rumour about them reducing it at later stage?

it's no good to me atm as im stuck on Tocco land till January next year :/

Posted by Bonovox
Not looked at the tariffs in detail but its not an option for me right now no 3G where i live on Vodafone and thats not changed since 2002 when i had a w900i on contract.

Posted by masseur
for anyone who uses the tweakersoft aroundme app, they released an update a day or two back that includes augmented reality

its actually a little flakey as the app exits frequently when using the new feature, but when it works it does work well

here's some pubs near me

Lol,You had a W900 in 2002? thats an '05-'06 phone lol.
Crazy how the iPhone is just selling even in the beginning of January when people are broke they are still queuing to get it. My mum is loving her new White 16GB iPhone3GS, works well as her iPod/weekend phone, its definetly faster than my dad's iPhone3G 8gb which also works as a weekend phone/ipod, both of them prefer their BlackBerrys for everyday use. Weirdly enough i see generaly in the coporate world the whole BB and iPhone combo is growing fast, when job shadowing at a Auditing firm i noticed a lot of people with either a E71 and iPhone/iPod Touch or BB and iPhone/iPod Touch lol, guess not all accountants are boring.
MissUK
Toccos are bad for you cant you trade it for a 3G 8gb iPhone? Although i must say both 3G and 3GS have awful batt life compared to BBs and NOKIA 5800xm/N97.

Posted by Miss UK
haha Tocco Ultra II's also have lousey batterys Gucci im on
my 2nd battery and ive not had it one year yet, it's not worth alot if I sell it
£100 in theory, I was shocked to findout that 3 months after I had it

it's a nice phone but theres a few things im not remotley happy about tbh,
screen rotation cannot be turned of on the web so if your in bed it's well
akward to check weather or something quick..

I think i'll wait for the next iPhone anyway,
all these silly idiots who are now trapped for 24mths with the 3GS will be kicking
themselves when the next one comes along

ive got the iPod touch in the meantime
it's more or less the same thing minus the phone

Posted by Supa_Fly
MissUK, You got some solid points. When you start to enter text within a page (like on forums) you cannot rotate, really annoying. Posting within ares like on a thread was really guess work with the low screen-real-estate; that drove me insane.

plus I didn't enjoy how much I wanted peace & quite around my kids for me to use the great music apps (something for composing that makes the iPhone/iPod Touch stand out), and never got around to it. I hated spending $40/wk on ... GAMING! Can you believe it ... Eliminate Pro is ADDICTING! Beware guys of that game ... beware!

Even with the 3GS everybody complained how quite I was on the phone using wired headphones - broke my heart really. Battery life wasn't too bad but I did have to charge every nite if I knew I was going to use it during the day. Apple's battery life ratings are skewed for music/video playback with the phone radio OFF. I faired well vs many others though.

The core PIM is what really killed it for me ... personal and especially going back to work. Displaying was ok ... but data entry was slow, not too great (very limited), and using Note programs, Calendar apps, Task Apps, etc became VERY annoying and convoluted. What the hell was Apple thinking ... I don't even think the ancient Newton was this limited in the core PIM. This forced me to move on ... and I'm glad I did ... for my uses. I think I may own a 3rd G iPod Touch in a few months but I'm not craving it as much as I initially thought 1mth ago.

Oh yeah Masseur, changing start of week date is in the Settings> General (or somewhere there I think).

Although this wasn't for me I eventually googled it and there is no direct way to choose the day the week starts

instead you have to go to Settings > General > International > Regional format and pick a country.
United Kingdom sets the start of week to Monday while United States sets it to Sunday

of course, changing this setting affects other things too

bit weird if you ask me

Does the iPhone support A2DP and bluetooth file transfer yet ?

Posted by anonymuser
A2DP yes, file transfer no (and no guarantee it ever will).

Posted by AbuBasim
It supports A2DP but only play/pause and not forward/backward.

File transfer is possible over WiFi using a PC/Mac (even if either machine doesn't have built-in wifi; has router connected). Also iphone_2_iphone wifi transfer is possible using free apps.

I take it I'd need to set up a wireless network though. Not a straight connection to my netbook ?

Posted by Supa_Fly
If you're netbook has WiFi ... then you can just use the app and it'll generate the iPhone's own wifi address. Then you just type this into IE/FF/Safari Browser.

Vodafone claim to have already sold 100,000 iphones. I just picked up the new Argos catalogue,I wonder how long it will be before the iphone is sold there
