thanks too to scottt, don't have a Mac.. so..

I did it via iTunes, cuttng a mp3 to 30 seconds or under. Then converting to acc, and then renaming. fiddly but it worked...

ofiaich

Yeah on Windows its a bit fiddly but it works. Just remember to uncheck the start/end time of the original tracks so that when you play them back on PC/iPhone/iPodTouch they play the full track.

PS maybe we should have a thread here to contribute uploading ringtones for those of us to share. There are a plenty for the various phones.

Also welcome to the Joy of iPhone. I wish I got the 32GB as I'm now downloading and loading more movies and iTunes University videos (Stanford has some great free series done in 2008 on iPhone development). GET a SCREEN PROTECTOR! Youll be glad you did and get a case that suits your needs. Even Masseur can get a very thin protective case for his iPhone that doesn't add bulk and hardly any weight. Oddly enough I don't miss using themes since the cases kind of do that themselves on the outside of the phone.

on p34 on this thread, thank you all for helping me look at choices for new headphones.
I'm seriously considering ...
Bose headsets (with Mic)

or
Klipsh

Since these Apple in the ear premiums have a case looking like a futuristic tampon.

Oh wait (EDIT):

Just saw the "Ultimate Ears Metro.fi 220vi" and the "Ultimate Ears SuperFi 5vi" headphones. the latter has a mic & button. But I hope it gives the same functionality as the stock iPhone 3GS headphones.

so I guess I should take a chance and just upgrade!!

Look on your PC for the OS pre loaded or search for the one online for free download (same yours shipped with). the majority of those having issues are coming from those that upgraded to the 3.1 firmware. Mine came BNIB from Apple store with 3.1 and have had no issues. Battery life seems to be getting better since I fully drained it playing music the other night.

nice post...! really good!

Thanks for that!! But aren't iPhone ringtones only 30 seconds or less?

iTunes shows mine as 3.0.1 so I wonder whether to upgrade ...

I use skull candy as sold by themarques !

Sorry about that. To clarify, in iTunes remember to uncheck the start & end times for the original music track (mp3, aac, etc) not the ringtone. This way if you playback in iTunes on the PC/Mac or in the iPod app on the iPhone it'll play the full track not the ringtone segment when you're in an iPod playlist. This is seperate from the copied track you've set as the ringtone and on the iPhone will not affect the ringtone. Does this make better sense and less confusion?

Hi everyone!

do you all use Voice Control?

I have switched it to English and I am getting some crazy results. Oh! I speak BBC English so maybe that's why..

I said 'Play...Queen' and the reply from the iPhone was 'Call Gordon Brown, multiple numbers'.... ( something like that. )

I am worried to try because on one occasion, I said 'play..' and it started to dial my friends phone and I didn't even say a name...

Please tell me your experiences of Voice Control!!

and ringtones!! Thanks to acronym here for his great work!!

I have just noticed a crack above the camera lens... Not happy at all... As they will replace with 3.1 Software, which is not good....

Not happy about this... This is my 2nd one now...

My white one cracked about 6 weeks ago took to apple store in Manchester and got swapped straightaway with a 3.0 one, by now though i reckon they'll be 3.1 like you say

This is my 2nd 1...

First 1 cracked about 6 weeks time and 2nd has been 3 weeks now...

Not happy about this... do like the phone... but can't be dealing with this... Its worse this time round...

you need to then get a bigger case, or stronger case. But I agreewe need to be more careful with these iPhones than normal phones. Careful with choice of slip on cases as I've read cause scrathes and may lead to weakening thee iPhone body shell till it cracks. AT least they replace it under warranty no questions ask. It's not a superman phone but it's odd how some larger manufacturers charge ppl money to replace the body shell.

Im very careful with my phones... They tend to look as good as new... once I decide don't want them... Especially with the iPhone I have been even more carefull... Keeping it seperate... Strange thing is... I checked it in the morning it was fine but then got into work and had a call... which lasted a while (40mins) and then I looked at the phone and it had a crack above the camera lens area.

I have never used cases and don't feel a case would make a difference...

It seems to be a major issue as they had a lot of problems with the 3G version cracking too... Especially in the white... So may have to get a black 1 as a replacement (which I don't really want to do)

Cheers

GET a SCREEN PROTECTOR! Youll be glad you did

Just personal opinion, but I'd never use a screen protector on the iPhone, there really isn't any point. I've been using my 3G without one for a year now, and the screen's still good as new - because it's solid glass and simply doesn't scratch or spoil like a standard, resistive touchscreen. I religiously used a screen protector on all my previous smartphones because it was too easy to scratch their plastic-covered screens with the stylus otherwise - but on the iPhone there's no stylus, and no soft plastic layer on the screen to be scratched.

Sure, if you really worked at it you could scratch it with something hard enough - but then if it's hard and sharp enough to scratch glass, it's going to cut through your flimsy plastic screen protector to do that anyway. Keep those diamonds in another pocket and you'll be fine.

The only real danger to the iPhone's screen is impact, and the possibility of cracking the screen altogether - but again, no (usable) screen protector is going to prevent that.

The black cracks just as much its just a case you don't notice it until the cracks get severe

Well it seems like I'm gonna have to go for my 3rd 3GS... And see how I get on... If not will replace and sell... SIMPLE...

I can't be asked in running around to get the handset changed and then spend time getting it ready... Never had a phone that cracks, by normal use...

Its not good enough and they really need to sort this

Makes ya wish they had a metallic finish an the back shell or the same backing as the iPod Touch 2nd or 3rd edition devices. Then we'd be bothered only by cracks.

And that doesn't even include the app, sold separately - forget that!

I just can't imagine why anyone would buy that when £3 would buy you essentially the same thing on ebay. Ok, it wouldn't have built-in GPS, but then the iPhone does!

now THIS is the news we really want.

Curious I know this SDK will only run on Intel based Mac's, however will the first few versions of XCode run on a G5 Mac and be able to update to which version? The reason I ask is if I can purchase a used iMac G5 on the cheap which will run the SDK for iPhone 3G/3GS coding then I can save a lot of money and begin much sooner than wait for an intel macbook for a reasonable price.

Thanks.

I saw that new advert for Pizza Hut today that said "Now, order with your iPhone."

Question... Couldn't you always order with your iPhone, seeing as it is, in fact, a phone?

Well, now, there's an app for that

Posted by masseur
lol, well if there is an app for Pizza Hut UK I can't find it.

I can see from google that there is one for Pizza Hut US (though its not available via iTunes in UK), and the US Pizza Hut web site portal is customised for the iphone screen, but the UK site isn't

... so I have no idea what thats about

didn't have much to do tonight so ran the new blackra1n to jailbreak my 3.1.2 3GS

amazingly quick jailbreak!

it installed the blackra1n app which gave the option to install cydia... or something called rock or something called Icy, both which claim to be faster than Cydia and offer other features... never heard of these? does anyone who has jailbroken have a preference between these 3?

TVCatchup now works on iPhone!
This service is free (except data charges of course) and provides UK free to air channels, though the iPhone beta service is limited to about 10 at present.

Works well from the 10 minutes I've been testing

just go to http://iphone.tvcatchup.com in your iphone browser

Posted by Barachus
i still think Cydia is the best option, both icy and rock claim to use the repositories as cydia but there are still some things on cydia that u dont get in the other 2, granted they do load faster

the quality on tvcatchup is amazing, even on the 3G network

Posted by SE-Naz
I have been using Cydia... which can be slow at times, but works well... I have not tried ICY or Rocky... so can't really comment... but have heard they are not that good.

P.s. Have booked to see Apple Care on Wed for my cracked 3GS... Lets see how long this one lasts...

Good luck on the replacement. They really shouldn't take too long - unless your device was directly from provider which means it may have been locked. Correction - forgot that practice is only for screwing us in North America; I purchased directly from Apple store so mine is unlocked .

Happy Thanksgiving everyone.

Got my replacement...

Excellent stuff... it came with 3.1 on it, so was able to Jailbreak... Excellent...

When I spoke about the crack on the handset the genius advisor mentioned that Apple are aware of it and that it is due to the material they use for the back piece... but we still seem to be getting returns. He also mentioned that out of warranty they would not replace the handset due to a crack as it does not affect the operation of the handset...

One thing I have realised... Once Voda and Orange get the handset there will be a lot more returns especially as they have not sorted this cracking issue, which they are fully aware of...

Not good at all... Lets hope I get better life with this one...

Cheers
ENJOY

TomTom 1.1 is now available in the app store

unfortunately (for the Western Europe version) its another almost 1gb download even though the maps are the same version

What's New In This Version:
Enhanced GPS technology
- Shows your location on the map with greater precision
- Follows your car more accurately while you drive

New "Navigate to contact" engine:
- Handles many more address formats including abbreviations
- Better supports US addresses

I avoid Cydia unless strictly necessary, as downloading 10minutes before leaving on holiday, Cydia crashed and took my phone with it!

Worse timing ever.

You're probably not interested in the apps available only to jailbroken phones.
I did jailbreak my phone the day it became available to 3.1/3.1.2 iPhones, to regain tethering using the MyWi app from Rock.

I've had my iPhone 3GS for 4wks or more now and with 3.1.1 been able to tether since day 1 without jailbreaking. Tethering is a restriction of provider not the 3GS. for those getting replacements, careful cUss with new hardware chipsets rumor has it Apple did something to prevent jailbreaking. We'll found out soon enough.

Wow I really love this phone! Was on subway listening with stock remote headphones and playlist. I launched DrumSequencer app music faded and the drum sounds took over. Pressed the home button drum beats faded but music didn't auto start my playlist; I thought no way, now I'd have to pull out my phone in this crowd?? Nadda! Just pressed headset button once and bingo playlist began right where I left off; bliss!

Not entirely true. It's a restriction Apple applies to all carriers who have not signed agreements with Apple! To enable tethering on a non-jailbroken phone you need a signed carrier bundle file and Apple will only release these signed files to carriers that pay for this service. So forget about putting any SIM card in your phone if you want to use it as a modem.

Hey guys

I have decided that I am going to buy the Apple Iphone 16GIG 3GS handset. I am going to buy is on pay and go and put my monthly sim card in it. I am just waiting on getting the full money I sold my N97 for then put the cash towards the Iphone. I guess this is the phone for me. I had nokia's and s.e mobile phones, and at work I have had the iphone however it is the original one I use. I guess since I know everything about it and work with it each day. It is the ideal choice for me. I mean the N97 was an alright handset but the whole user experience was not that great as I get with my work Iphone. So I know its a lot of money but its going to be worth it. I just love the way everything just work's so smoothly with the Iphone.

I will be getting this handset from the Apple store, however also thinking of getting a personal shopper experience at the Apple store when buying this handset. For those who have had that experience, how did it go. I will be looking forward to sharing my experiences with this handset, moving from the original edge handset to a fully great turbo charged 3gs handset

Posted by masseur
I got my 3gs on release day using the shopping experience. as the time is pre booked I just walzed past the waiting queues and straight to the salesman

I've not bought anything else in an Apple shop so its hard to compare with the normal experience, but its just nice to be greeted by name and the time taken to show you want you want to see while seated at a table

hello everybody!
I am loving my iphone so far (in spite of lack of multifunctions, radio not using the wifi, and having to use cydia to find a way to watch flash videos in streamline)
I already have that pink incipio case but I would like to change it.
I have been looking at this
http://ifrogz.com/products.ph[....]rap_overlay=4504|IP3GSoftTouch
http://www.iskin.com/solo/features_fit.html
http://www.more-thing.com/diamond-series-for-iphone-3g-3gs.html
any suggestions?
I do no twnat to add buldge, but protection.
Thanks!

Posted by Supa_Fly
@Ros-Mari,

Your first choice, iFrogz, avoid. That style case (2-piece) have been known (from other manufacturers) to scratch your iPhone from removal to insertion. However should you prefer it then use a full body sheild on the 3GS before using it. The others, iSkin solo and that More Diamond series ... girl you got class! I'm impressed. Both seem that it'll do fine to protect your 3GS. I'm using a similar from Speck but is a hard candyshell like with rubber on the inside to protect against impacts. my Speck comes around the front on the edges like a lip so that when I have my 3GS face down; the screen doesn't touch the table/desk. Those last two cases you mentioned look like they do the same. IF you can, see them in person to see if they'll protect better than a simple silicone. Check out MacForums.com as there is a HUGE thread with many users there stating their opinions and experiences of various cases; it might help.

Has anyone tried the new Real Racing GTi game?! ITs AMAZING!

I recommend the Switch Easy Capsule Rebel. Or Contour Showcase. I am using the Capsule Rebel and it is an awesome case. I can face it down on a table as the lip protects the the entire front. Checkout some reviews on Youtube. itsmemorpheous on youtube has some great reviews.
