Picked up my 3GS / 16G (Black), at the apple store yesterday. My last SE phone was the W810, 2years ago. Although I love SE phones. I can not break away from the iphone.. The speed of the 3GS is impressive.. I've always had my phones in cases... This phone is so beautiful, I think I'll keep it in the nude, why hide it's beauty?

Any one here has it in the nude? how many have a case?

Yeah it looks great "in the nude" untill the first time you drop it

Just thought I would addd my opinion to this discussion... take it or leave it.

I have owned SE's since the launch of the T610. T610 was my first ever SE phone.
Since then I have replaced and upgraded my handset each year with a newer SE model. Last year I had the W960i and to be honest it was that phone that put the nail in the coffin for SE phones (for me).

The W960i was slow, touchscreen was a joke and texting was backward compared to previous SE phones. I could write a massive list of problems here but I will spare you the details.

So where am I going?:

I got a 16GB iPhone 3G S on the day of launch. Within 10/20mins it felt like I had owned it for months. Everything is so intuitive and works! It doesn't hang or crash, the menues are superb and texting is a pleasure.

I know there are a lot of anti Apple people out there but honestly, if you haven't tried the iPhone go and do so. You will not be disappointed at how quick and easy this phone is to use. Yes I agree the camera is naff compared to some of the later SE models but this phone just shines in so many other areas.

Put it this way - I'm glad I made the switch and I don't think I will be going back to SE for quite some time.... no! not because I'm in an 18 month contract but because SE simply lost that edge that they had for so many years!!

@bulti48 I understand you completely... I also started with the T610, which was the T616 in the U.S.
When the iphone was launched and immediately as a SE diehard bashed it. Then one day i decided to take it for a spin.... I was hooked. I just sold my 1st generation this week, after two years. I purchased the 3GS with the exact amount that I sold my first gen with. I've been away from SE for two years now.. I contemplated going to the C905 just last week... but could not break away from the iphone.... SE has alot of work to do...

I decided to buy needs for speed underground a few days ago following much reccomendation. The first couple of days it was present on my iphone but with what seemed to be a default icon.

I removed the game and re-downloaded (for free of course as I'd already paid). It appeared with the correct NSFU icon but since then it has deleted itself several times. I can redownload again without cost but has anyone else experienced this and have a solution to stop it self deleting?

Even though i am not a huge Apple fan there are things Apple seem to get right and thats reliability. I hardly hear of any complaints from users just sometimes general signal issues or battery life but nothing major. Also in the iphone's camera favour. On a device which is all about fun and multi media and having everything with you to carry around in one device. The camera i must admit when i seen one in store the pics look great when viewing them on its screen. Cos the screen is so sharp the pics do look great and its fun viewing them on it. Its obviously not meant for serious photography its for fun use but still pretty decent and usable. And the video recording hey even Sony Ericsson cant manage VGA lately.

Can't really help except to say (unhelpfully) that hasn't happened to me on my 3G - NSFU downloaded fine first time with the right icon. I have read a few similar reports in reviews of other apps in the store though - seems like it might be a 3.0 bug rather than NSFU, so maybe 3.1 will sort it?

Have you sync'd/backed up recently?

not since getting the 3G S

3.1 won't be here 'till september apparantly so if it happens again I might just do the restore and re-sync

I think the iPhone's firmware is very high quality, generally speaking, and that's where the reliability comes from. When I first got the 3G (October last year) the only software glitch present was the occasional crash in Safari - that got fixed by one of the updates very soon after, and I've had no real complaints since then.

There's not a lot to go wrong with the hardware either when you think about it. Only one button that you use with any regularity really (my home button is definitely a bit softer than it used to be after nine months, but still has a positive feel to it). A glass screen that you'd be unlucky to scratch or harm.. the plastic back is a bit of a weak spot, but most seem to be holding up ok, and the fact that the 3G S uses the same design would suggest that Apple haven't had all that many failures to deal with.

I think 3.0 has introduced a couple of gremlins, as .0 releases tend to - I definitely think my phone gets a little warmer than it used to, for one thing - but I've no doubt they'll work those kinks out. It's definitely the least problematic phone I've owned in a very long time, probably the only smartphone I've had that could compare to it on reliability was the P910 (and UIQ was all downhill from there).

problem solved... I was re-downloading the game to the iphone and I noticed it was being deleted each time i synched, so I removed the program from itunes and redownloaded it there and then it synched to the iphone and has stayed there since

I got that too... Didnt notice any differences after the up date?

But anyways...

Can someone please tell me how i get the photos i have taken with my iphone off of my iphone? Short of emailing them to my self i have found now way of doing it!?

Posted by masseur
when you connect your phone to your pc, if you have photos, then autoplay should show and you can choose to explore the iphone internal storage

if autoplay doesn't start then just open file explorer and click on your iphone in the portable devices section

then just drag and drop as usual

oh... and there was me thinking it wouldnt be that simple lol.

Cheers Mass dude!

Well, well, well
I have got a beautiful w995 and a w980(everyday commuting use).
That said....
I always crtized the Iphgone: too big, too expensive, NO radio, NO good camera, fragile....
BUt, I have just updated form my classic ipod to a Ipod Touch 2G and ....I ahve seen the light.I have fallen in love wiht that super screen, the video quality, the web surfing, the applications system and the touch control.I have even added some radio through wifi -it flies that wifi!
Now I do not know wether to sell my w995 and get an Iphone 3GS . Here in Sāin Movistar has the exclusivity: it is about 270 euros plus 18 months of minimum 30 euros/month. EXPENSIVE. If you want a free ine, it is from abrooad with no guarantee and to be unlocked....for about 800-700 euros. I paid +- 350e for my w995.
Iphone prices are exhorbitant and ridiculous but if I sell the SE, I cna manage to get the money.
What do you think guys?
Should I do it?
Is ti worth it or is this a momentary infatuation???? It a lot of money.
THANKS

welcome to the club (almost!)

well... you have most of the iphone in your touch, you just can't do data when away from wifi.
if thats important, then upgrade to the 3G S.

I think you'll find that you will want to do everything on the iphone rather than swapping and changing handsets depending on whether you need to make a call or check emails away from wifi etc.

Posted by ros-mari
so, you would change right?

Posted by masseur
I already did

yes! do it!

I used to be EXACTLY the same as you, slagged the iPhone off all the time, then they launched the 3GS and announced it would have Sat Nav software launched on it and I was sold, brought one, haven't looked back bye bye SE.
I am now addicted to the Apps store and run Co-Pilot Live 8 on it which works an absolute treat.
IMO, buy one! And if you don't like it after a week or two, sell it for the same as you brought it for. They hold their value well.

Posted by REO
Do it! I bashed the iphone for a very long time.... I was a diehard SE fan. Then I tried the iphone, and never looked back again. Had the 1st gen and now the 3GS .... Life is good : ) Just do it !!!

Posted by ros-mari

So, we all feel pretty the same
Tre probelm is that I sold my first balck w995 to a friend who fell in love with it 4 days later, and this silver one does not get any interest..amazing! I sell it cheap, I have not used it much, still in plastics and it is full woith music and games and It shoul fly!
The Iphone costs minimum 700 euros (double the w995) so I need to sell one before getting the ohter. And I will have to jailbreak it and do things being new to the Iphone, scares me a little.
well, you have convinced me!
When are they going to release the new Iphone ....?? Because if they did a new one after paying 700, I would kill them

why do you feel you need to jailbreak the iphone? what do you want to do that you can't do with a standard 3GS and the app store?

as for when will thex next iphone come? I wouldn't expect anything new before next June/July as that seems to be the trend now.

Posted by ros-mari
here in Sāin, only MOvistar have them, and I use another company for intensive everyday use (Orange)
So can I just "ublock it" and use it 100% without jailbreak?
I have found a NEW 16gb white one per 350 -400e. but it is 3G, worth it?

Posted by masseur
yes, I believe you still need to jailbreak if you want to unlock
I haven't done it myself on the 3GS but everyone says its simple and straightforward

the 3G (with V3 firmware) is perfectly fine if you don't want 32gb, done want a digital compass, don't want voice control, etc... (and don't want the latest! )

Posted by ros-mari
well I have found a 3gs 32gb per 600
a 3g used new one per 270
the probemis that you buy ine and in a few months they stop paying the monthky cost and you ahve a mobile the company locks by imei whe the priginal buyer stops the contrac withouht paying the full 24/18 monthws

More Bluetooth profiles; especially file transfer - a la SE phones.
More application choices, multitasking switcher application.
just a few more choices. something I'm considering moving to iPhone after I bought my wife's iPod Touch 2G 16GB.

how much thicker is the 3GS vs the iPodTouch 2G?

Thanks.

Posted by masseur
yeah yeah... lol

I know what the general reasons are for jailbreaking, I was just curious what ros-mari's specific reasons were, and it seems it was only for unlocking purposes

Posted by ros-mari
exactly!

odd how that video showed "how" he chose to delete the email. I thought opening the email then clicking the Trash icon at the bottom menu also deletes?

Well what happens, using either method, if you fully power off the device. Then powering on and trying the Spotlight search!?

Don't be surprised that this is Mac SO X in the works as it archives data for fast retrieval should something be deleted and needed to be retrieved. however this shouldn't happen and throws ALL those iPhone toting businesses as complete FOOLS for choosing iPhone as a secure platform that hasn't been tried and tested in scenarious such as this!

I almost was able to upgrade from Rogers today, their new HUP policy of no smartphone upgrades for ANYONE, in 2yrs sucks the big one. I cannot WAIT to jump ship to Telus/Bell when their HSPA launches.

Funny how many of the members who's forum contributions I most valued have now gravitated to the iPhone sections and have mostly bought iPhones now (even thos that were very vociferous in it's condemnation) leaving behind the ill considered yappings of the fanboi's in the SE forums. That if anything speaks more about the culture shift Apple have wrought in my opinion and how tough it's going to be for others to push back.

I never bashed it, or hated it... I just didn't think it was for me and I thought it was a fad
I originally got the 2g a couple of years ago with the idea of keeping it for a month, just so I had experienced it. I even had a couple of people lined up ready to take it off my hands after that.

infact it has hardly left my hand since, and now I've started writing a couple of apps for it too!
if they sell well on the app store, expect to see me posting from somewhere exotic

Well, I'm getting offers to byu a 3G iphone,m used and new (used 400e) new (360e) 16gb.
But it is th 3G,
everybody says the mnusic quality is far better inthe 3gsm...I can cope with speed, the camera thing worries me more(2 meg no autofocus is ridiculous!),,,,but what anout the sound??is it true through headphones????

I find new 3GS 32gb per 680 euros!!!!!
the 16gb I want could be aboyt 580e!
I do not know what to do...my w995 cannot find a buyer! And I was planning to buy some speakers for home. Suggestions, I want small size, good sound, not too low or too loud.
THANKS

It's easy to forget that the iPhone has actually changed considerably during the couple of years it's existed, which partly explains some of the changing attitudes towards it. I "bashed" the original iPhone mostly because it was being touted as a powerful smartphone, and challenger to Windows Mobile and Symbian etc, when in reality it was a completely closed OS - essentially a featurephone, only without even Java support to enliven it. It's hard to believe now that for the first year of its existence, there was literally no official way to install any form of additional app or software - it had the features and functions that Apple announced early in 2007, and that was that, unless you risked jailbreaking (and it was a while before even that was possible, or particularly easy to do).

It was the announcement of the Appstore early last year that changed everything. That's the point where the iPhone matured, when it combined that nice UI and glossiness with some proper smartphone smarts. I've no regrets over passing on the original iPhone, but I'm still very glad I picked up the 3G last year.

Ros-mari, spend a little more and buy the 3GS, itīs worth the price

Sounds like something taken from The Invasion.
I agree with you. An iPod with a phone was my standard argument against the iPhone - until I tried it myself. Now a proud owner of an 3GS 32 GB

Maybe we should convince laffen to add an iPhone avatar...?

The first two incarnations were not worth touching with a 50ft bargepole, the 3G S is well worth a look though, as is a 3G with the new FW on

so trueeeeeeeeee
well, it seems nobody wants my w995, so I'll keep it for holidays with a need of a camera .
And I'll start saving for an iphone....3gs
maybe I'll get the possibility of a future new Iphone 4 / 3GSX...

The 3G was the best smartphone on the market when it came out, and is second only to the 3G S now, IMHO. It's just gotten better with age.

Just wondering if anyone has used a dual sim with either the 3G or 3G S. I have just bought a 3G and hoping to get rid of the work phone. Don't suppose there is one that allows either sim to take calls, receive messages and just chose which one to make calls from?

I know I am asking about the 3G but I am guessing this will be getting more exposure and most people will have an idea anyway.

Thanks
