Sorry guys haven't been following the thread. Just wondering if the Jailbreak for 3G S for windows is available now? I find my iPhone extremely boring without the jailbreak therefore I'm still using the 2nd gen iPhone since it has all the apps. I really want to jailbreak my 3g s ASAP!!

News on the 3GS jailbreak

Posted by Coxy
Right I've got a few more niggles that have cropped up!!!

Can you turn off the network lost pop up? A lot of my mates live in villages with little to no signal and they have installed signal blockers (aparently, there isn't any signal in my classroom anyway) at college so it gets rather irritating!

Also RE bluetooth. My car headunit is a BT handsfree and A2DP compatible device. It used to work in the following way (this is with recent A2DP compatible Sony Ericssons):

Turn the ignition on and the phone auto connects
If a call comes in answer it on the headunit or phone and it will come through the car speakers.
Go to BT audio as the source (on headunit) and press pause twice (so pause then play) and it will play from wherever it was last.

Now with the iPhone 3G S

Turn the ignition on and the phone auto connects
If a call comes in answer it on the headunit and nothing happens. Answer on the phone and it will come through the phones speakers. You have to tap audio something or other and select the BT device.
Go to BT audio as the source (on headunit) and press pause twice (so pause then play) and nothing happens. You have to start the ipod and play your music from the phone. NONE of the controls on the headunit work with the phone. Next, back, play, pause nothing!

As you can imagine the headunit wasn't massively cheap so it's quite irritating!!! Along with the fact that handsfree is no longer handsfree! You have to do most on the phone!

What's the battery life been like for you guys? Especially for those of you coming from a 3G... much improvement or much of a muchness?

Posted by masseur
the first few days it wasn't good, but that was probably a mixture of me using it more heavily and it being a new battery

it seems to have settled down now and is definitly giving more life than the 3G, but I wouldn't yet say the difference is significant

Posted by RyaN
Well anything is better than nothing! I guess with the increased processing power the battery needs to be that bit better than the last one.

It'd be interesting to see some comparison camera shots of the 3GS and 3G also

Phone Arena review of this phone was not so keen on it. They also said call quality was awful

Posted by masseur
here is their review for anyone who wants a read. They gave it 8.5 out of 10

Can't say I've had any call quality issues, or lost/dropped calls. I know some of their reviews are done in US and some in Europe so I wonder if this was reviewed on AT&T which is probably the most hated network in the world?

I had noticed on occassion that it is sometimes a bit quieter than I remembered the 3G to be during calls

Posted by Bonovox
Yeah i do find certain networks are better than other when it comes to call quality even in good coverage i used to find Vodafone awful.

sorry this is a bit off topic, however:

anyone managed to use the findmyiphone feature on the iphone yet? those who have the mobileme subscription will be able to use it. I am trying to figure out how to have it on my 2g iphone but does not seem to be working.

Posted by Superluminova
Yeah i have it and used it on my 2g yesterday, told someone in my work to take my phone out on lunch and that i would track him and it works great and the fact you can make it ring for two minutes and get a message on the display is brilliant.

This service should be with all phone.

Posted by Mr Miyagi
Superluminova is this set up though the iphone or through itunes? how did you set it up?

thanks

Posted by Superluminova
What you need to do is:

On the iPhone's Home screen, go to Settings, then into Mail, Contacts, and Calendars and make sure Fetch New Data is set to Push.

Then select your MobileMe account and turn on Find My iPhone.

and it test it go to me.com, sign in and click account and the Find My iPhone and have a play.

Posted by Mr Miyagi
thanks i tried it, but when i try and switch find my iphone on, it gives me a pop up message i accept it, but it takes me back to the feature being off and not on. it won't stay on the on tab for some reason :S

Posted by Mr Miyagi
got it working now. i changed my email from my .mac to my .me address.

Posted by Barachus
So the findme setting is on the phone itself?
I thought it was remote, so basically the thief can just go into settings and turn it off?

Posted by scouser_75
They can. But thats why you should password protect the phone

Posted by Barachus
Yeah I guess I should but I am to lazy to type everytine I want to use it

Now I got 2 Iphones 3GS at home 16 and 32GB. Both of them got bass distortions on bass boost setting (Kanye West, John Legend, Notoroius etc, even on some Radiohead tracks) I guess it's software fault, dunno how is it on 3G with OS 3.0 or previous one.

About battery... when I was playing with it like 5hrs internet(wifi) about 1h music, some videos, games, itunes etc battery needed recharging after about 16hrs. Now with music, some internet and calls (not so much) 2 days gone and still 50% battery. But yes internet drains battery v fast

Got also bug with artworks in ipod library. Some covers became black, no picture when browsing horizontally (you can see cover when vert or in itunes). Also you can't see some album covers that are comming next. When you slide library they appear suddenly, like they got no angle view, only the front one. I've found somewhere on the internet that it's itunes fault...

Just my few things I've noticed as a new apple user. I've always used SE phones and I must say I prefer SE music quality more, that just my opinion

Posted by RyaN
I've been reading around a little and there are a few people that are complaining about the sound quality of the iPod.app on the 3GS, even people going from the 3G to the 3GS said there is a reduction of quality, and it's distorted. My guess is it's, as you say, a firmware issue... If I were you submit a complaint direct to Apple. They need to know about this so it can be fixed.

Regarding the battery issues, after 16hrs of heavy use like you mention, it's normal for the battery to die! Welcome to a 3.5'' glorious touchscreen

You also have things to consider like turning wi-fi searching off when you're not in a wi-fi area... turning 3G off when you're not in a 3G area... Push and fetching data too regularly also contributes. The brightness of the screen contributes

I'm fed up now! No O2 store in the UK has stock of the 16GB model, called O2 and the phone sales OR the online store have no stock either, Apple.com states dispatched in 5 day's, and Carphone Warehouse has started to sell PAYG but only in the 32GB model cause again they have no stock of the 16GB.
So I'm a bit buggered at the mo. Will just have to wait till next Thursday now I guess and then see If I can get one? Or perhaps CPW will get them on Tuesday. Can't believe how difficult it's proving just to get an iPhone.

I just bought a 16gb iPhone on payg from an o2 shop on Falkirk, scotland so they are available. Couldn't justify the extra £100 for the 32gb. Not when I am having to sell my omnia HD and still put more money towards it. Had a 3g iPhone before and since getting rid of it I have really missed it especially the games

How is everyone that got their handset finding the screen with fingerprints??? Also who is using a screen protector

Cheers

I have a few problems with my 3g S. The Facebook and Mail apps do not appear. I've removed facebook through itunes and reinstaledl gazillion times but it just doesn't seem to appear on the iphone. It only appears in the iTunes under applications and in the iPhones settings, which suggests it does get installed on the iPhone but just doesnt seem to appear! The Mail app icon has also disappeared I dont know where its gone!

I cant do a restore through iTunes as I moved home and Dont have full broadband connection. I'm using the iPhone tethering and dont want to risk too much data usage as I've not subscribed to the tethering addon. Has anyone experienced any apps missing? Are there any other solutions than restoring?

The only way to tell externally is that the writing on the back is silver now, like the apple, not grey as before. Plus they never sold the 3G with 32gb, obviously.

Surprised there isn't a S on it somewhere, but then I suppose there was never a 3G on the 3G either..

Has anybody's White 3Gs turned pink yet ?
Quite a good trick. Shame it's a severe fault found on a batch of phones along with poor battery life. Or has everyone kept theirs indoors under a fan during the recent warm weather.

Haha, you couldn't be anymore wrong. Battery life is very good, and my White 3GS has NO marks what so ever on it after a week now, then again it's already been proven to be some cases that are causing it. You are obviously an iPhone hater posting a troll comment.

Haha it is you that is wrong.

1. I'm not an Iphone hating troll you numbnut. People like you who just type away without even thinking or even looking things up first is whats giving Esato a bad rep making members new and old turn away from what used to be a good, friendly website.

2.I actually think the Iphone is a good device which could be even better if Apple listened to users comments. I also own 4 of them.

3. Apple has issued a warning stating that users of the 3Gs should not use the phone in temperatures of 35 degrees and over due to overheatng. It has also been reported by Apple that one of the effects of the temperature causes the white Iphone to turn a pink colour.

Report below taken from MSN dated Friday 3rd July 09:-

Apple faces a potential PR disaster, following its advice to iPhone owners to not use their new 3GS smartphones at temperatures over 35 degrees.

Which means those lucky enough to live in slightly hotter climes than us Brits might need to ensure they only use their iPhones when safely in the shade!

Apple issued the latest iPhone 3GS guidelines this week telling users to only operate their phone "in a place where the temperature is between 0 and 35 degrees."

Overheating, poor battery life

The advice from Apple follows numerous reports of iPhone 3GSs overheating, with some owners of the white iPhone 3GS claiming that the casing has turned pink due to the problem.

"My iPhone 3GS back gets somewhat warm when playing a few mins of games. Is this normal?" Asks one user on Apple's online forums, with a number of other users posting about similar problems.

A number of other users have posted about battery life issues with their new iPhone 3GSs.

"My guess is there's going to be a whole lot of batteries affected because these [iPhones] are from very large production runs," Aaron Vronko of iPhone repair outfit Rapid Repair, told The Telegraph .

"If you have a problem in the design of a series of batteries, it's probably going to be spread to tens of thousands [of device], if not hundreds of thousands, and maybe more."

Taken from Guardian.co.uk:-

Apple's new iPhone 3GS gets hot during usage, according to anecdotal reports that have begun to emerge on the web in the fortnight since the device was released - which seems to have prompted the company to issue a warning against leaving it inside cars in hot weather, and noting that the phone will throw up a temperature warning if it overheats.

The iPhone 3GS has a significantly faster central processor than its predecessor: while the iPhone 3G ran at 400MHz, the 3GS's chip functions at about 600MHz. But advances in chip technology in the intervening year should mean that the 3GS chip uses less power.

Even so, a number of users have said that the phone gets significantly hotter than the 3G model that was released in 2008. Melissa Perenson, a reporter for PC World, said that she noticed that when it was plugged into the wall to recharge that it became "Very, very hot -- not just on the back, but the entire length of the front face, too. I was using a game, and then later the Web browser for reading the news about Michael Jackson, all over a Wi-Fi connection while plugged in. And in those circumstances, well...toasty doesn't even describe how surprisingly hot it got. It was too hot to even put the phone against my face."

The clue may be that the iPhone's new battery becomes excessively hot while it is charging, especially if the phone is new and the battery has not been through a number of recharges.

Apple's only concession to the questions about hot operation come in its statement on its website, which notes that the automatic temperature warning may come on if you leave the device in a car on a hot day, leave it in direct sunlight for "extended amounts of time", or use certain applications in hot conditions or direct sunlight for long periods of time, such as GPS tracking in a car on a sunny day or listening to music while in direct sunlight.

Oh....and look. A warning from Apple:-

Keeping iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS within acceptable operating temperatures
Last Modified: June 25, 2009
Article: HT2101

Summary
Learn about the operating temperatures and temperature management of iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS.

Products Affected
iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS

Operate iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS in a place where the temperature is between 0º and 35º C (32º to 95º F). Low- or high-temperature conditions might temporarily shorten battery life or cause the device to temporarily stop working properly.

Store iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS in a place where the temperature is between -20º and 45º C (-4º to 113º F). Don’t leave the device in your car, because temperatures in parked cars can exceed this range.

If the interior temperature of the device exceeds normal operating temperatures, you may experience the following as it attempts to regulate its temperature:

The device stops charging
Display dims
Weak cellular signal
Temperature warning screen appears with the message "iPhone needs to cool down before you can use it" (see image below)

This message appears when the operating temperature has become too hot. This is a safety mechanism that protects the components of your device. If this message appears, you should turn the device off, move it to a cooler environment, and allow it to cool before resuming use.

Note: When this message appears, the device may still be able to make emergency calls.

Some conditions and activities that may activate the Temperature warning message:

Leaving the device in a car on a hot day.
Leaving it in direct sunlight for extended amounts of time.
Using certain applications in hot conditions or direct sunlight for long periods of time, such as GPS tracking in a car on a sunny day or listening to music while in direct sunlight.
Safety Standards:
iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS comply with the safety standard for Safety of Information Technology Equipment, IEC 60950-1.

This safety standard has been adopted by many countries and is referred to as the following:

UL 60950-1 in the United States
CSA 60950-01 in Canada
EN60950-1 in Europe
AS/NZS 60950:1 in Australia and New Zealand.

So back to you. Could I be anymore wrong ??????.............

@rookwise,

Well your post came across as a trolling comment, and none of what you posted makes any difference, the 'warning' you posted that Apple posted has been on it's website since the launch of the 3G, they just added the 3GS onto it, they BOTH display the temperature warning and that includes the warning of leaving it in hot cars so it's nothing new.
If you want to believe media spin then go ahead, me personally learn from what I see myself and I see my lovely white 3GS without ANY faults what so ever and it has NO discolouration either, as do hundreds of thousands of other 3GS, and I see you left the bit out where an Apple store tech cleaned the marks of someone's 3GS with alcohol because the users case marked it.
Enough from me on this subject cause as I said, my phones fine, I don't believe media spin.

Posted by kreacher
This 35C limit is hilarious, can't wait to see when they launch in other countries in August

Get a black one for sure

I've always maintained that the white one would be better if the whole thing was white - front face n all.
